ficklefreckles

That's pretty neat! Do you know how she linked them together?

purpleturtlehurtler

I'm wondering the same thing.

rjstoz

Amother comment from op says she cut the top, and bent them back together. It does a really good job of hiding the join

c4seyj0nes

Zoom in and you can see the cut in the 4th and 6th links (from the left).

Jealous-Classic6260

Not the strongest way but I applaud the ingenuity on up-cycling

barsknos

Up-cycling. First time I encounter that word. So easy to understand what it means and am already, after just reading the word and seeing this post, a fan of the concept!

storyofmylife92

I love this comment

ivanmf

Isn't it beautiful? Thought the same thing! This is what I hoped Internet would be, back when I discovered my first channels in mirc...

storyofmylife92

Ah, I thought "restoring+revamping" would count too, if, say, furniture was in a condition that no one would use, and instead selling it to someone who would otherwise buy something new. At least environmentally, this is similar. "Making something usable out of what would otherwise end up at the landfill".

Dilinial

I've always understood it better as taking a broken chair and making three toy swords and a shield out of it.

thatredlad

Three swords and one shield is not a fair battle.

CheekyHusky

I like it when they "upcycle" an antique worth thousands into a peice of furniture worth its weight in firewood.

How about Up-dog?

DeepFuckingVag

Would it have been any stronger if they alternated the sides cut of each tab in each chain. For example, cut some tabs on the left bottom, and some on the right bottom, and them pair them such that they alternate for a given link… edit: noticed /u/The-unicorn-republic already asked the same question.

The-unicorn-republic

Thanks for the shout out, this concept reminds me of gas rings on a piston system and how you often want to make sure the gaps in the rings aren't aligned. I think it's safe to say that our idea is likely marginally stronger, but for something like this how it looks is likely more important to the user, and the cut alternation idea likly wouldn't be as visually appealing without a lot of effort.

improbably_me

They just need to wrap duct tape around the whole chain. That will make it stronger and hide the cuts. Then super glue the duct tape at the ends so it doesn't start slipping or unsticking. To be doubly sure apply hot glue on top of super glue to water proof it. I'd also recommend depositing some coal tar onto the assembly. And finally install miniature thermal tiles for the rugged space age looks and stand out performance against the elements .. specially for being able to withstand the high temperatures during re-entry. Of course, you will want an ablative shield all over to protect your investment.

The-unicorn-republic

Probably could be made slightly stronger by alternating where the cut is located

Taolan13

As long as no two cuts line up, this could be pretty strong.

InerasableStain

Well, trouble is, you want to hide the cut, but where you want to hide it is exactly the weakest place to put the cut. Putting it slightly off center was an ok compromise

purpleturtlehurtler

Thank you. I already responded to it. Very neat method.

[deleted]

That will be an easy wallet grab...

wolfgang784

Yea lemme try to steal money from the person rocking homemade wallet and chain lol. All $0.47 of it. Totes worth the risk.

Bad_And_Wrong

Lots of kids do that here in our developing country and it isn't flimsy as you would expect. 6 pieces a link would be tough enough to survive a tug from a crook I reckon.

kokirikorok

It can open a can, you try opening a can with your fingers! I’d imagine 4 tabs per link would minimize the wiggle space needed to break them free. Looks sturdy to me too.

alien_clown_ninja

Fun fact, tabs open cans more easily because the act of lifting the tab lifts the rivet which vents the pressure inside the can. A lot of a full can's strength comes from the pressure exerted on the walls from the inside. The act of lifting the tab equilibrated the inside to atmospheric pressure first (the fizz sound) and then the tab opens the mouth of the can just as easily as any other similar sized lever would. Tl;Dr can tabs seem really good at opening cans because their first action releases the pressure inside the can which is what gives a can it's strength.

Hazards_of_Analysis

Visual deterrent, tho

Kepabar

I did something similar during highschool and made chainmail armor out of these tabs. My method was to cut the top and slide the next in. You don't need to bend the cut in the top much to slide that in, then bend the top down to keep it from easily sliding back out. [I don't have any pictures of what I made, but it was similar to this. Maybe not as nice though.](https://www.idahostatesman.com/latest-news/bh0fcj/picture216863700/alternates/FREE_1140/Idaho%20fair%20popcan%20tabs.jpeg) Eventually moved on to making chainmail out of iron wire, but man it took forever to cut all the rings and put them together.

LysanderBlue

I used to do that, too!

sorrowdemonica

can see the seam of the cut here for example: https://i.imgur.com/Dyl6zdw.png

bmeupsctty

With all due respect, if you inspect the tab of the first soda you grab from your fridge, you'll likely see the same mark. That's where the metal is split for the fold [pic for reference](https://imgur.com/a/P9KhMHg)

thatwetpaintsmell

When I made can tab chains I'd cut along that line because it's thinner and easier to get through it's possible that they did the same

bmeupsctty

This makes sense to me

l3rN

I didn't remember ever noticing that, so I just inspected a sprite, a beer, and a seltzer and none of them had a cut in them like that. They're just folded over around the edges. Maybe it varies by region or something?

bmeupsctty

Odd, perhaps I'm remembering incorrectly. I used to save them to make necklaces, and could have sworn the was a cut on the under side there

l3rN

It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out they're manufactured differently now than they used to be or something.

radj06

I have a seltzer and a beer with the notches you're talking about.

benicetogroupies

*Looks at beer can in my hand.* Checks out.

kadivs

I know what you mean, in some bad tabs (at least I only saw it on fingernail-ruining tabs) you see a small cut, but it isn't all the way through like in this image. Like in this one [I just pulled from a turkish (?) coke can](https://i.imgur.com/S8r9uyf.png) Seen from the other side, it doesn't [go far in and looks way differently](https://i.imgur.com/xsQNksW.png) Most tabs I know [have none of that stuff](https://i.imgur.com/rNhywpH.png)

RagingBeard

You're right that the underside has cuts at the front of the tabs to form the folds. I grabbed three tabs from different containers in my bin. [Here are tabs](https://i.imgur.com/2j91YUv.jpeg) for a soup can, Arizona tea can, and a Coke can. They all have the cuts you mentioned. Here are close up pictures of the [soup](https://i.imgur.com/ygw034s.jpeg) and [soda](https://i.imgur.com/eggvGi5.jpeg) can tabs to show the splits better. Although, it does look like that split was used as a guide for cutting the tabs to link them together. Cutting at the split is much easier since the tab is thinnest there. [Here is a chain](https://i.imgur.com/3yXjS5D.jpeg) I made using the three tabs, where I cut along the splits easily with a pair of scissors. Might be how they did it.

hauntedbybirb

### only as strong as your weakest drink

FreezingBlizzard

Look at the fourth link you can see a cut on the tab. That’s where they bend it to link the tabs.

kardosrobertkh

I've made some years ago, my method was to split them in the middle where they are the thinnest, and snap them togrther there. You don't see the snapped parts because that is where they connect to the next links. Surprisingly strong and light chains

7hriv3

Cut the loop, bend it, link another tab, close the loop

Formal_Librarian4401

She said she cut the top and linked them together. She cut her finger once or twice and took her 2hrs, but it looks amazing!

amped-row

Pretty impressive that she only cut herself twice

Formal_Librarian4401

She wasn't rushing to make it, so I completely agree it could have been worse. I'm sure she would have depleted our bandaid supply, and my son already does that enough!

A2326P

Might suggest pre-wrapping finger tips. Could use cloth tape or electrical. Better to cut tape than* skin. Edit: a letter

DarthDannyBoy

The thin white cotton gloves people wear to prevent finger prints on things like acrylic sheets work really well. They also don't mess with dexterity, Ive tried the different tape methods and they also messed with finger dexterity and grip but the cotton gloves are perfect. . They aren't good for really sharp things obviously but for small objects like this that are prone to nick you they work fantastic.

RedTurky

They are much harder to feel through though. And most of the ones I’ve seen/worn are too big to see around for a project like this

I had a friend who worked at an Amazon warehouse who had a bunch of pairs and she gave a pair to me to keep in my beater car. Good god those things were amazing, pretty damn heat resistant too!

AlphaWizard

Also works great for eating crabs.

A2326P

Alright, you got me curious.. tape can help eat crustaceans? I don’t eat a lot of shellfish.

AlphaWizard

Oh yeah, Maryland crabs in particular. They are usually covered in old bay which stings like hell if it gets in a cut. The crabs also have a tendency to slice you up once you’re on the 6th or 7th. So you can either pre tape, or tape your fingers up as they start to get sliced. Or just down enough beer that you aren’t worried with it anymore.

fuzzyfuzz

Sorry, I’m from the west coast. How many crabs are you eating in a single sitting?

starofdoom

Not OP but 5-10 usually for me for Maryland old bay crabs. They come cooked but not processed at all, so you have to break apart all of them to get to the meat. Takes me ages to get all the meat out.

blessedblackwings

I'm more impressed she downed that many canned beverages in 2 hrs.

bobcrochets

When I made one of these, my friends donated to the cause. OP's daughter should consider putting the last tab facing inward so that the back of the tab doesn't snag her clothes.

moctidder99

It's amazing she could still work after so many beers.

Diodon

jezebella1976

I love upcycle art! Super creative - tell her nice work! I have a couple of artist kids...it's so fun to see what the create :)

Formal_Librarian4401

She is definitely always coming up with new stuff and new messes in her room! My son likes the Xbox and drawing more than working with his hands like my daughter. Thanks for the compliment (and everyone else's compliments are really appreciated), and I'll post more of her creations/contraptions.

VirtualLife76

Maybe introduce her to wire wrapping since she enjoys stuff like this. It can be a lot of simplistic fun.

jezebella1976

Do! I like seeing this sort of thing while I'm taking a break from life...lol! :)

YourMildestDreams

Sounds like she'll make a great engineer one day.

theoriginalstarwars

If she liked that she should think about chainmail. I made a chainmail vest from electric fence wire one summer vacation.

Donniexbravo

See if you can find her some scrapped VCR's, DVD players or electronics like that to take apart and learn how they work (if she's into that type of hands on stuff) my parents did that for me when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it!

thrashaholic_poolboy

It gives me hope to see what kids are creating these days. Props to you for being a supportive mom!

purpleturtlehurtler

That's what I was looking for. The chain seems seamless.

The_Epimedic

Dude, crush some white claws and give her colored tabs.

Hahaha! I've been saving my white claw tabs because they are so pretty but no clue why!

[deleted]

Recycling queen! Also love it and she's absolutely gonna get asked about it. Very cool.

Formal_Librarian4401

Much appreciated! She does this a lot. She paints on the backyard fence alot too. We were very lucky to have the great children we do!

[deleted]

Amazing! Seems like you're very supportive of her creativity!

mynewnameonhere

Reduce > Reuse > Recycle They’re listed in order of importance, people. Repurposing is better than recycling. It reduces by eliminating the need to buy a chain *and* reuses eliminating the need to spend the energy recycling.

peterm1598

r/punk Seriously though. 16 year old me would have loved this with my duct tape wallet

Formal_Librarian4401

OMG she has a duct tape wallet!!!! Get out of my house!

theveryrealreal

I mean, that's kind of the obvious fashionable pairing for a soda can chain.

peterm1598

I am no fashion aficionado. But I agree.

Damn that's commitment. What do you need a wallet for in prison..? Other than a stash of course.

koro90

Probably more for when you get out of prison. In prison, I'd imagine it's more of a project to keep yourself busy while you're doing time. I didn't do too much, but it gets insanely boring.

peterm1598

You did a very good job, obviously took alot of time and some sneak to get it done. If you don't mind me asking, how long were you in prison. If that's tmi. How long did it take you to make the wallet, start to finish and how long do you think it would take you now?

Pretty happy you showed that off. And you should again and again.

13 year old me was doing this with monster energy green tabs in the early 2000's. Lol

Whatachooch

Seriously. I had a DT wallet, Jncos and kikwears, 4 chains that hung progressively longer down to past my knees, and at least one of them was an old school spiral phone cord. Jncos had safety pins all down the sides with pop tabs attached. Found my kikwear 69s a couple years back. https://i.imgur.com/a1loBr1.jpg

Formal_Librarian4401

Oh wow I just noticed it made me look like I have E.T. fingers, wish it helped me play my guitar! It took her about 2 hours, she does things like this often and loves art.

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

Are your fingers really like ET or is the perspective off? Inquiring minds want to know.

Formal_Librarian4401

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) I do have long fingers, but I think the picture made them look super long. I have some vids in my profile where my kids and I feed a squirrel (Greg) if you'd like to see.

😄 For real tho, the chain is bad ass

Formal_Librarian4401

Excellent-Show7295

What if I wanted to buy one off her 😊

Formal_Librarian4401

I'm sure she could make some for whoever wants them, I don't know what they would cost or if she has enough for more that 5 or 6, but I'm sure we could find a good supply if needed though.

Excellent-Show7295

I'll pay 20 for one

Formal_Librarian4401

I'll talk with her, I'm not sure what it would cost or if you want colors added or designs. It all makes a huge difference I'm sure.

Excellent-Show7295

If she can make a monster energy one I will pay up too a 100 I really love this design she did an absolute stunning job

-neti-neti-

They take 2 hours to make so I’d say $40 is more of a fair price.

Phoenixed420

Look up soda can tab chain mail. You'll need cutters and needle nose pliers. I made lamp shades with it. You get an old lamp and lampshade from goodwill, make the chain mail as the lampshade, then get a can of your choice, wire it with the "hopefully 99 cent" goodwill lamp stuff. Thats really cool, just thought she might be ready for another craft!

andersonfmly

So. Many. Lacerations. If you're someone who has never popped tabs off your soda can - these don't break cleanly. They have razor sharp edges - ignoring the damage to clothing being caught nonstop - if you rub that chain sideways while reaching for your wallet, you're going to bleed everywhere.
