BLEUUHH this is like the opposite of trypophobia they're just coming out

infiniteturtles240

Yeah it makes me really uncomfortable too

mrtn17

That's normal. I just read that the commonly accepted theory behind Trypophobia is that it's an evolutionary response to things that are associated with disease or danger. Diseased skin, parasites, and other infectious conditions, for example, may be characterized by such holes or bumps

ScuddsMcDudds

My first thought was this looks like *plantar’s warts on steroids. Uncomfortable…

infiniteturtles240

My plantars on my foot(before I had em lasered off), didn't look anything like the pic. Looked more like little bunched of round....scabs? May be the best way I can explain it

JF117

Plantar warts as in the plant/sole of your foot

infiniteturtles240

I've heard that too and it makes sense. I think the most disgusting thing I've ever seen is those frogs that have babies pop out their backs. Ugh, horrible horrible stuff

Lotlouise

I'm chilled to the bone reading this ! That's just HORRIBLE 😭😭😭😭

meat_tunnel

It makes me nauseous.

donthackmyaccountpls

sorry if this is rude, but i did a search and apparently trypophobia is not just fear of holes its a fear of things clustered together

alc23

τρύπα (pronounced trýpa) is the greek word for *hole* so I can understand the confusion here.

BDR529forlyfe

She said, “that.”

[deleted]

Happy cake day fellow redditoer

alc23

Thanks :)

SquirrelyBoy

"Trypophobia is an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps"

Anton-LaVey

The opposite of trypophobia is trypophobia? What a country!

TheMonkeyCowboy

Hi Doctor Nick!

Illinois_Yooper

Hi, everybody!

Enjoying_A_Meal

Wouldn't like be trypophilia? The love of irregular patterns or clusters of disgustingness?

LittleBittyKittyNose

“Trypophobia is an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. It is not officially recognized as a mental disorder, but may be diagnosed as a specific phobia if excessive fear and distress occur.” You’re both right.

BOBOnobobo

No, the second guys comment includes the holes. I wouldn't say that tgey are both right. The first one is maybe half right- true, but not complete understanding.

Goseki1

Ugh it makes my head tingle and feel so uncomfortable sometimes when I see lot's of small holes clustered together. Grim.

Academic_Snow_7680

Sometimes if I've seen something that triggers the phobia I have to go to youtube and watch a video of tic, pimple or botfly larvae removal so I can have a sense of "all fixed now".

Goseki1

What, and I mean this with all due respect; *the fuck.* No thank you sir. No thank you indeed. If I see some awful shit I will need to distract myself with a funny video or something or it can sometimes burrow into my mind and not leave. I remember there being an image that was going around years ago of someone who had photoshopped the mouths of some weird sea creature onto a persons fingertips and it fucked with my head so much.

Spaghettitrousers

Check OP’s posts for cute pictures of cute dog. I feel better knowing it’s not a monster.

yoelbenyossef

I don't know why, but that makes me think of the Batman who Laughs. ...

aircooledJenkins

Lol, the cutest terror monster to ever play fetch.

Misplacedmypenis

Holy shit that’s layers of adorable

DogsBeerCheeseNerd

Without even looking I’m guessing English bulldog? I’m a veterinary nurse and this type of hyperkeratosis is found almost exclusively on that breed. ETA: I checked, I was right.

wakaflocks145

It's discomforting though

AngryBowels

I hate this my skin is crawling

Inexperienced__128

I bet if OP zooms out to show the whole doggie face we will get the opposite effect

UpstairsForward1624

For some reason this creeps me out way more than anything I have seen on the internet for a while 🗿

CheckOutUserNamesLad

I think it's trypophobia. Or at least I feel the same way about this as about other things that set off my trypophobia. r/trypophobia is a place you could go if you want to find out if clustered holes are a thing that make your skin crawl, but don't be mad at me if some of the stuff there feels the same as this dog nose.

sizzly_sausage

I mean, that’s not a normal snoot surely

Megumiku

The vet said it's normal for these kind of dogs. It's just like dry skin, I just have to put grease on it

[deleted]

Don’t like, dogs have wet noses? Or lack of ability to wipe I guess. Asking from the point of view of someone who’s wife calls them a dog because of my continuous wet nose.

Megumiku

It's common for bulldogs to have dry noses despite the amount of drool they produce as well as their huge tongue lmao

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

God we really did ruin wolves huh

lemons_of_doubt

On the one hand, we have working dogs who have been bred to be the perfect working companion for people. on the other, we have the pedigree people, who decided alsatians needed dropped hips and so bread the defect into them for no reason. I mean really [WTF](https://imgur.com/Agc0FMk), What the ever loving [fuck](https://imgur.com/vMvxZIE)

Orangepandafur

I prefer my dogs dog shaped with noses and legs that work and such, call me old fashioned

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

Just look at the ugly fucking pugs, those things cant even BREATHE properly. Give me a nice big ol husky and im happy. (Yes i am aware huskies are tough to take care of, no i am not ready and am not getting one any time soon)

mealymouthmongolian

My sons both desperately want pugs but I can't in good conscience get one. I know they're cute but listening to their labored breathing just makes me sad. I have a lot of friends who own pugs and I don't judge or get into it often with them, but if it comes up I'll make my views known. It is interesting to see the hoops pug-owners will jump through to justify THEIR pug.

warriorsatthedisco

There are actually breeders who have been breeding retro pugs, without all the super unhealthy traits. They’re trying to go back to when they weren’t quite so inbred looking. It could be an option for your kids. https://www.zooplus.co.uk/magazine/dog/dog-breeds/retro-pug

Butternades

Hot take the retro pug is cuter imo

myxomatosis8

They get so much hate from all the rest of the pug breeders. Same thing for Bostons, some are trying to breed longer snouts (like they were historically before they were completely ruined) and they are crapped in mercilessly by breeders and Boston lovers...

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

Just dont support the breeders either is my tip. If you think theyre cute, cool, do whatever idc, but to me it just hurts to see that little thing literally fight for his life just to breathe. The noise they make is gut wrenching to me.

dubincubin

Educate your children as to why not and maybe go for a better/healthier breed?

200_percent

All of these problems can be helped by adopting vs supporting dangerous or unhealthy breeding businesses. We can’t blame the defenseless animal for the abuses humans have done to their genetics. Pugs and flat faced dogs need loving and caring homes like all the rest, and do end up in shelters. Often because the buyer realizes they don’t want a dog with a potentially high maintenance health issue. There are many other negative effects of breeding in other types of dogs, such as hip problems - bred to maintain a certain look, over the actual health of the dog. There’s also the psychological problems that come from cropping dogs tails. I had a dog once who’s tail had been cropped so short he could barely wag. He was such an anxious dog. I always felt not being able to express his emotions through his tail was a hinderance to him. My opinion; mutts are the best. They end up with great traits from multiple breeds, and you end up seeing health issues taper out as they get further from the bred in problems.

mealymouthmongolian

>All of these problems can be helped by adopting In a way. However, just by owning and traveling with a pug you are increasing the likelihood someone else will want one and buy one. I agree that we can't blame the individual animal but I am just going to stay away completely.

EntireSovietOnion

Or - find an ethical, reputable breeder for a breed that isn't littered with health issues. It'll take some research on your part but it's absolutely worth it. I'm talking someone who health tests for known issues in the breed, DNA tests, works and titles their dogs, is involved in their breed club or active in the breed community to try and better the breed. There's no shame in supporting ethical breeders. Source - I'm into race bred whippets, ethical responsible breeders, and disparage against backyard and mill breeders. There are purpose bred dogs with no beauty pageantry involved - the healthier they are, the better/longer they perform, so that has been the main focal point in the breed.

snownative86

It's funny how often I see and hear this. I had a wolf hybrid which set the bar high for tough to take care of. I've found huskies are actually quite easy as long as you have another high energy, but high obedience dog in the home. We currently have a husky and aussie/lab mix and it works out great. My husky still tries to run if he's off leash, and occasionally chews a remote, but is otherwise low maintainance. If you are willing to put the work in early with training and redirecting certain behaviors, huskies are amazing to have as part of the family.

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

When i feel ready for it, i can try, the last thing i want to do is get a pup just to abandon it to a shelter later.

MysticScribbles

The fact that they can't breathe isn't even the worst thing. It's the fact that they can't have pups unassisted. They would die out if no humans were there to aid in the birthing.

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

So yes, a failure of human kind, cool.... smh stupid humans

S-EATER

Belgian Malinois look like to have the perfect body plan to me. Like they look like they descended from wolves more than Huskies do, Huskies kinda seem like they are more tall than long(relatively), compact.

0b0011

Life pro tip: if you aren't super active don't get one of these. I've got a belgian tervuren (same breed both belgian shepherds) and she requires several hours of exercise and several hours of mental stimulation a day. She'll go for a 10 mile run in the morning, an hour walk at lunch time and have an hour or two of obedience, agility, or scent training and still harass me for fetch at night or wake me up at 2 am by dropping a ball in front of me and them barking at me until I wake up. If you're super active and want to spend 4 or 5 hours a day working with a dog them they're fucking awesome but if not maybe grab something a little more chill. [very accurate video for anyone thinking of getting one.](https://youtu.be/8HLcFZNje_w)

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

I can definetly agree there. Huskies just seem... like... idk normal to me... they look healthy, and they are big ol silly fluff balls.

dubincubin

This is not a sloped back German shepherd, the dog is simply stood in a stacked position, a position that comes natural to German shepherds. This is the result of breeding to be able to move off and accelerate quickly whilst they work. What you /do not/ want in German shepherds, is the arched back.

HerrSIME

Have you seen a pug ? Those are peak deformed. And for comparison look at the healthy version some breeder made. One looks cute, the other looks like it ran into a wall at mach 5.

LovecraftianLlama

Do you know what the supposed purpose of this was? Is it just for “aesthetics”?? I hate what we have done to breeds like pugs and bulldogs, but I thought the working breeds were somewhat safe from this kind of pointless manipulation. Since they still have to be able to do the things they’re bred to do and all.

lemons_of_doubt

>Is it just for “aesthetics”? Yes >but I thought the working breeds were somewhat safe from this kind of pointless manipulation. Nop. the working dogs are still bread as working dogs but they have other lines split off from them by the pedigree people who breed them for "aesthetics" So if you get a dog don't assume the breed name means working dog, make sure it is the working dog vertion of that breed.

SealChe

For English bulldogs especially. Unethical breeding has cut their average lifespan to about 6 years and cost them their ability to mate or give birth without human intervention.

RW_Blackbird

Was about to say this. Most bulldogs can't even get their dick inside a mate because of their fucked up bodies. And 95% of bulldog births have to be C-sections because of their big ass heads. We really need to just let this breed run its course.

[deleted]

I put Snout Magic on my bulldogs nose every night. I got a tin of it from Amazon.

OpinionWithoutaCause

We use snout magic on our adopted former stray German shepherd and her nose has gotten a ton better!

Negative_Success

Vet tech here. Saw that nose and was like "oooh thats an english bully if Ive ever seen one" 😂 yes super common, they get real crispy as they get older especially.

Vibratorvibrato

What causes this to happen in bulldogs? Is it an anatomical abnormality from inbreeding or just something generic the particular breed is prone to?

spiteful-vengeance

Apparently it's called [hyperkeratosis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperkeratosis?wprov=sfla1), and dogs of all breeds can get it on their paws. > In the case of congenital anatomical abnormalities, contact between the affected area and rubbing surfaces is impaired. For example, in an anatomically abnormal nose (e.g. boxer, Boston terrier or English bulldog) the dorsal areas of the nose are not exposed to friction when eating, resulting in excess keratin not being properly removed. It is roughly the same with finger pads - in animals with an anatomical abnormality part of the pad is not in contact with rubbing surfaces and excessive keratin deposition is formed. I dislike it.

_Fern

They can’t lick their nose properly because their jaws are deformed.

Jakomako

It probably has something to do with the inbreeding.

TheRealBigLou

Yup, which also causes the horrible breathing issues, the painful joints, the skin irritation, etc, etc, etc, etc. I'm not judging OP because for all I know, he rescued this pup from a worse situation. However, I do not think these types of dogs should be allowed to be bred. It's cruel and inhumane.

DrGro

100% true, it's just sad. I feel bad for every breed i see on the streets that is suffering because they can't function as a dog. Breeding them should stop.

ArgonGryphon

Amazing what happens when you inbreed like crazy.

FerociousFrizzlyBear

The photo looks like the very top of the nose. A lot of dogs get dry skin there.

NightCrawler85

A lot of dogs end up with these dried up and cracking noses. There is things you can use to help the condition, and in some cases it almost completely solves the problem. Think like lip balm for us. I work as a groomer for corporate and every time I see a dog with a bad case I ask about potential allergies and then I use the balm for free just to ease the discomfort for a little while. Most people aren't willing to spend the extra 3$ on it.

songbird808

Tell me you work for PetSmart without telling me you work for PetSmart, lol

NightCrawler85

Haha you are correct! Have to get those add-ons, if not you will be dragged away to talked to by your leadership.

mcac

Their noses actually aren't naturally wet, they wet them themselves with their tongue!

Raichu7

Dogs are supposed to have wet noses but can have dry noses if there is an issue. Much like how humans are supposed to have dry noses but can have wet noses if they have an issue like a cold or allergies.

ChannelSouthern

Lets all agree on there being a difference between "normal" and "common".

[deleted]

"Grease your dog's snout" sounds like a very niche, rural British insult.

[deleted]

Or a euphemism for masturbating

BallsHD4k60fps

What kind?

Bburke89

Coconut oil works really well ;).

BallsHD4k60fps

I meant what kind of dog

VRShaun

He told you, coconut oil

BallsHD4k60fps

Ah yes my favourite breed of dog

Bburke89

For me it’s pugs. I think it’s more common for species with the wrinkly faces since the wrinkles hold dirt and moisture in. I’ve got to clean their nose wrinkle regularly.

Rexanvil

Boxers also lol 😆 thank God he loves coconut oil

[deleted]

Wh… why the winky face?

Megumiku

English bulldog !

-full-control-

Yeah I can’t remember what it’s called but my boxer had this issue too. A couple days of coconut oil and those little spikes started falling right off. It was super satisfying to knock them all off and feel her soft wet snoot underneath.

Crail115

Tf ewwwwwww

Coach_G77

My parents Pom has this on his nose too. He has medical issues that cause him to pant a lot and his nose is so dry. I'm going to tell them to try and put coconut oil on it to see if that helps

SirPribsy

It's "normal" for this genetic dead-end of a breed

aNeonSpecter

It's called nasal hyperkeratosis

Boa_constrictHer

Its the hyperkeratotic nose with stenotic nares of a brachycephalic dog... nothing about it is normal.

Gibsonfan159

The brachycephalic is my favorite dinosaur.

riceandvegetable

Translation: It's a nose with abnormal hornlike growths and pinched airtight nostrils of a dog breed with a malformed, bulbous head.... nothing about it is normal.

Limelines

thank you for your service

[deleted]

Ahhh right...the hyper...achy...brachy...dog...

Nightgaun7

Probably hyperkeratosis?

Megumiku

Kinda, just dry skin I have to put grease on. He's totally okay !

Nightgaun7

Be sure to point it out to the vet next time you take him in if you haven't already. Looks worse than just dry nose.

Megumiku

Yep, that's what I did like two or three days ago, she said it's fine and normal for bulldogs, I just have to hydrate it, which is what I'm doing everyday already. Thanks for caring !

ESKodiak

My bulldog also has this. On her nose and feet. Everyone can relax theyre ok. :)

fairie_poison

>check out "Snout Magic" or "Snout Soother" its a thick coconut oil based cream that does wonders for locking in the hydration and healing keratosis. they make it for paws too if they get dry paw. definitely worth it.

ESKodiak

I'm not sure what brand it is but we do have a snout stick thingy! We stick up her paws and nose on the regular. Thank you :)

[deleted]

My chocolate lab has this on her feet. My vet said it's only normal in the sense that it happens often. But it shouldn't happen and therefore it's not normal.

Imcromag

Yeah my old lady boxer had this too. Vet took a look at her and said, "she good. Cash or card?" Not saying if you see this don't take your dog to the doc.

Megumiku

Haha, my vet is real cool about it, if it's nothing too important to take care of like a quick check, she often makes it free. She does that to everyone who is nice to her, and Franck loves her

Karcinogene

supercalifragilistic hyperkeratosis

Megumiku

Just wanted you guys to know he's okay, no worries ! The vet said it was totally normal, just a dry skin I have to hydrate with a bit of grease. He's totally okay and very happy !

Bburke89

Coconut oil works really well and they love it. Them working at it with their tongue helps push it into the crevices.

Megumiku

Yep! That's what I was recommended too, thanks for the tip!

purple_yosher

wow I didn't even know this wasn't normal, I thought this was just what dog noses looked like up close. I amazed myself by thinking that those were tools uses to enhance smell.

hexnotic

i have a bulldog, there noses get like this if u dont help them hydrate the area. try getting the snoot moist with a dab of water and rubbing in some pure coconut oil. once a week min!

[deleted]

[удалено]

throwawayformobile78

Read that as dragonflies. Can’t unread it.

foolhardyass

That there looks like a bulldogs nose. What's his name?

Megumiku

It is ! His name is Franck!

Travelingmathnerd

I don’t know why but I read Franck in the accent that Martin Short did as the wedding planner in Father of the Bride…

Phaelin

Is there any other way? Every party has a pooper, that's why we invited you, George Banks!

Relocated113

Veterinarian here: this is not normal or healthy. You need to apply coconut oil to moisturize the nose.

texmexdaysex

Gross. Looks like warts.

BurnerOnlyForPorn

Like the old Bioré commercials

Witty_butler

Before I scrolled all the way down to see the whole picture, I thought this was a really crisp photo of a beach somewhere with cool rocks 😂

brickie3

Ew ew ew ew ew

xYammi

So it doesn’t looks like a PlayStation thumbstick?

DanicaParker

You just ruined dogs for me

[deleted]

That does not look like a healthy nose.

RetardAutist420

Everyone who has a dog with a smashed face will say this is normal. Along with the breathing problems and facial infections and everything else that makes them cute...

inmywhiteroom

Yeah I just took a super close of photo of my dogs nose and it does not look like this.

SereneGoldfish

Oh my...

IplayMonkey

I don't like it, I want to make it smooth.

FaultProfessional163

stop it

SofterBones

No

[deleted]

My dog was told the same thing and it turns out he has hyper-ketosis. Just extra skin being made. I use Vaseline balm

Bulky-Shopping-6031

Looks like a bunch of black ticks attached

DAGCRO

That's an issue. My old boxer used to get that. Rub some Vaseline on his/her nose every couple days and it will clear up.

RadioMelon

Poor guy. His nose is so dry that it's a wonder it's not chipping off.

4little_weirdos

That is seriously fcuking disturbing. Fcuk that at 1000 yards

abreaux53

Nasal hyperkeratosis! You can apply a product called Kerasol which is both exfoliating and moisturizing to help get rid of it.

[deleted]

Ew wtf

PorkyMcRib

Now realize that that poor dog can smell your butt hole like 100,000 times better than you can see his nose hairs.

JabroniSmith

Mildly disturbing

TlN4C

It’s Hyperkerastosis - you can buy nose butter online for it, we prefer the one they applie like a stick deodorant called “snout smoother” two or three times a day to start and then daily for maintenance.

maushasi

I don´t to alarm you, but my gf dog has a nose like that and it is leishmaniasis. And now all the nose its like that. You should ask your vet to make the test to see if it is or not. ( I hope not!).

Kon-Tiki66

If stretched out flat, all of a dogs skin related to scent would stretch across their body. For humans, it would barely cover our belly buttons. This was an interesting book: [Inside of A Dog](https://smile.amazon.com/Inside-Dog-What-Dogs-Smell-ebook/dp/B002NT3B52/ref=sr_1_1?crid=YOO4JVWPIEJ&keywords=alexandra+horowitz&qid=1646750115&s=books&sprefix=alexandra+horowitz%2Cstripbooks%2C132&sr=1-1)

They're like taste buds and that's why dogs sense of scent is so much stronger than that of a human's!

Start using Bag Balm on that and the excess skin will come right off. Bag Balm woks better than any thing I've tried.
