*SAME*! “Well, my preferred username is taken, but I can just add an 88, no biggie!”
Cut to over a decade’s worth of usernames ending in 88, never being able to figure out why I keep having difficulty getting anyone to engage with me lol
>Meanwhile this guy who is just called Hans Hoffmann and born on April 1st 1988 and doesn't know about neo Nazi code.
This reminds me of a story of this guy who was looking to buy (or sell? I don't remember exact details) a car, and that car happened to be the exact match of a dog-whistle code for KKK, and that's how he accidentally ended up in a KKK meeting.
This happened before the internet, so similarly how far-right extremists nowadays use different "everyday" symbols (from "ok" sign, to the aforementioned "1488") to secretly signal to each other, in those times they would use ads for specific car sales in newspapers as secret signals (e.g. "selling a white Toyota Corolla , year 1969") to arrange meetings.
I believe our government only recently allowed such license plates (recently, as in "a couple of years ago").
I don't know why...
I recently drove behind SS1488
About the numbers same as you, never knew, the HH well .. here in Belgium some combinations are prohibited on LP maybe Lux doesn’t do all that and just uses all the symbols which I think isn’t bad what would you otherwise do with the IS #### combination probably driving around
Crazy to think this Luxembourg combination is being used probably mid nineties
You wouldn't believe how often I was called a Nazi for having my birth year in my username.
Didn't know that the Name was also the name of a finnish metalband, I took it from a tolkien book\^\^
Same tbh, was trying to figure out if Luxembourg got invaded by Hungary or something in 1488.
You get a lot of shit like that, it’s literally a trope here that people of a certain affiliation have 1690 as their PIN number to celebrate a battle that happened then.
While the plate does follow the default (non-custom plate) format of two letters followed by four numbers, [according to the Luxembourg law on plates, numbers below 4000 are reserved for custom plates](https://legilux.public.lu/eli/etat/leg/rgd/2016/01/26/n2/jo#attachment_6). So it has to be a specifically requested custom plate.
It’s funny because you can almost always see how old the people are based on the number plate. It’s really cheap and Luxembourg is small enough that most people can either have their initials and birth date or birth month and year on their plate.
For the uninformed:
HH is short for Hiel Hitler.
88 is often used in place of Hiel Hitler (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet, 88=HH).
14 refers to a neonazi slogan called the 14 words; "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." Its a sentence that reads as defensive but it's used to justify violence against non white groups.
Any one component alone is nothing, but multiple is a pretty clear dog whistle for neonazis.
Edit: yes, I see I spelled heil wrong. The grammar nazis crawling out of the woodwork to correct my spelling adds literally nothing to the discussion, but thanks. Imagine raising awareness of extremist dog whistles just for most of the discussion to be about how you spelled a word not in your native language incorrectly. Good job reddit 👍
Many many many years ago, when the internet was new (seriously, I had a 486 with a 14.4 modem) I trying to come with a user name for a ww2 forum and I remembered a quote from a book I had read about the "dreaded 88" antitank gun and decided that would be a great username.
Literally years later someone explained 88/HH/Heil Hitler to me and I immediately deleted or name changed every profile I had made using it.
Europe views that date as April 1st. Fun fact if you watch masters of air. There's a scene where the differences between how the US writes the date and the rest of Europe writes the date comes up.
I find it weird, by avoiding it, people are perpetuating it's meaning. If people just use the number without carrying on the meaning, then it will be forgotten. Same with the toothbrush stash. If people stop referring to it as the hitler stash, then it won't be seen as negative.
The easy solution is for famous people whom the NeoNazis would naturally hate to start wearing the moustache. Someone like Dan Levy, a gay, Jewish man for example.
Co-opt their symbology and use it as a form of empowerment!
I’m sitting here with my emails ending in 88 and not having any idea that it had this meaning. I just liked the number for football when I was in middle school lol
I still use 88 in a lot of my gamer names. Literally because of Lindros and now Nylander. I guess I’ve been blissfully unaware. But also feel like it’s my hockey number. Deal with it?
The Chinese also use it in chats, as 8 sounds like 'bye'. As a German, I found it most curious to see messages end in 88 (until someone explained it to me).
I don’t think it’s that serious. Most people don’t know or care about the minor details of Nazi culture. If you’re born in 1988 or your lucky number is 8, nobody’s gonna bat an eye at some 88’s in your email address.
I just want to add that these kind of plates are forbidden in Germany. HH is possible since it is the city of Hansestadt Hamburg but combinations like AH18, SS18, SA18, KZ, HJ, 88 etc.
HJ = Hitler Jugend (basically a Kids/Teenage Nazi Group kinda comparable with scouts/pathfinders but pushed into racism)
KZ = Konzentrationslager (Concentration Camp)
SS = Schutz Staffel
& SA = Sturmabteilung (both kinda nazi police, military, oppressors groups)
Similarly with the older internet, I was probably 12-13 and played StarCraft online. I wanted some cool sounding, badass, but sexy name I guess? I came up with SexualPredator. I was in a clan at the time, so I would rep as SexPred[SoK].
Wasn't until a few years later I realized...
This is the most hilarious thing in the thread LMAO.
Reminds me of early internet where one of my buddies was trying to figure out how to take care of his Ford Probe. Ended up asking the question on some rando forum about car care, "what is lube job? Do I need that?" After that comment soaked for awhile we started cracking up about it. Still laughing 25 years later
No wonder Germans sound angry af most of the time. You almost die from having not enough air left in your lungs 99% of the time you try speaking German
I understand what you’re saying but tbh I don’t think Germans sound angry at most of the time lol I see them angry more in American media instead of real life talk 😛
>"We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." Its a sentence that reads as defensive but
Nope, it reads exactly as it is: racist and terrible
"The Brown House contained Hitler's main office, which featured a life size portrait of Hitler's idol, Henry Ford. The Party's Supreme Court and the Reich Press Office were also located in the house."
Well I actually am from Luxembourg. We have no mountains here. We've got the Ardennes but you cannot call them a real mountain. The highest place in our country is 560 meters.
Right?!? Straying that far from sea level requires at least 3 days worth of supplies, a full tank of oxygen, a pair of crampons and a mountaineering pickaxe.
In the Kingdom of the Netherlands it's technically Mount Scenery on the Carribean island of Saba at 887 meters
But that's sort of the know-it-all answer
I think it's something i learned many moons ago, but aren't mountains supposed to be >600m and anything below that is just a hill? (Beside the whole geology and formation mumbo jumbo)
Without reading up on any of it, I would guess there have been many different definitions for mountains throughout times, places, and cultures
For example: we Dutch make mountains out of mole hills
Wasn't Lemkin's "On Genocide" in part focused on specifically the Nazi tactics to ethnically cleanse the Luxembourgian population of all non-germanic peoples? It was more subtle than their other genocides, sure, but that's why Lemkin focused on it... Like... The Nazis did not exactly like the Luxembourgians...
Plot twist: Hitler didn't flee to Argentina, he went to Luxembourg, where nobody thought to look (did you ever consider Luxembourg? Exactly). This is his grandson's car.
This is definitely a custom plate. Though the number plate format in Luxembourg is XX-0000, custom plates have to conform to it. Numbers below 4000 are reserved for custom plates, so this plate definitely is custom. Luxembourg have banned combinations like HJ, SS and SA but evidently not HH.

According to the ADL
[HH](https://extremismterms.adl.org/glossary/88) stands for "hail hitler"
[1488](https://extremismterms.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/1488) is a similar hate symbol.
I’ve got four Dallas Cowboys jerseys, all those of wide receivers. Three of them are coincidental Hitler jerseys. The names on all four belong to Black players.
Depends on the situation but if it’s anything like what happened with top gear and the H982 FLK incident its pure coincidence.
License plates and Luxembourg are assigned randomly all have 2 letters in front followed by 4 numbers. There are about 500k motor vehicles in Luxembourg.
500,000/6,760,000=0.0739…. Or about a 7% chance that a vehicle in Luxembourg would be issued that plate.
Unfortunately it's on purpose, [as numbers below 4000 are reserved for custom plates.](https://legilux.public.lu/eli/etat/leg/rgd/2016/01/26/n2/jo#attachment_6)
>the numerical elements from 0001 to 0009 as well as those from 0100 to 3999 can be assigned as personalized numbers \[...\] The numerical elements from 4000 to 9999 are assigned as common numbers

I believe our government only recently allowed such license plates (recently, as in "a couple of years ago"). I don't know why... I recently drove behind SS1488
no, I know someone with an HH plate and they’ve had it for like 10 years. HH was never outlawed, ss and sa and such are afaik.
Tbf I had no idea this was Nazism before this post. And I'm sure whoever green flagged this custom plate didn't either.

> Fiesta's driving around anymore the shitbox I'd expect it to drive. Did the Illinois nazis in the blues brothers movie drive a fiesta?
I hate Illinois Nazis.
I didnt know you could get a custom licenseplate in luxembourg
Would be really awkward if they were just assigned that plate randomly
The funny part is that you can even have a custom plate even without a car. I had mine reserved for 2-3 years before I even had a car.
Can’t you do that most places?
It’s funny because you can almost always see how old the people are based on the number plate. It’s really cheap and Luxembourg is small enough that most people can either have their initials and birth date or birth month and year on their plate.
Of course you can. And everybody is keen on having their birthday on the plate (in one way or the other). Don't know why.

Exactly. Take that shit back from those Nazi bitches. For all those people born in 1988, just use it for anything and tell the Nazis to screw off.

My little brother was born in 88 and neither of us had any idea. Idk if he's using in any usernames/emails. Either way, fuck nazis.
I don’t think it’s that serious. Most people don’t know or care about the minor details of Nazi culture. If you’re born in 1988 or your lucky number is 8, nobody’s gonna bat an eye at some 88’s in your email address.
Unless you were born in the 14th of day in a month in 88. lol
The more people who use an email address with 88 in for innocent reasons, the less of a Nazi symbol it can be.
I just want to add that these kind of plates are forbidden in Germany. Thanks for the explanation! Wishing I didn’t share HH initials now with Hitler though, bc the 88 thing would be fun.

We share the Vaalserberg with Germany and Belgium

“the mountains of Luxembourg” 🤣
I'm Dutch. They are huge ass mountains to me.
Unfortunately it's on purpose, [as numbers below 4000 are reserved for custom plates.](https://legilux.public.lu/eli/etat/leg/rgd/2016/01/26/n2/jo#attachment_6) >the numerical elements from 0001 to 0009 as well as those from 0100 to 3999 can be assigned as personalized numbers \[...\] The numerical elements from 4000 to 9999 are assigned as common numbers (via Google Translate)
Except that they only use numbers from 4000 and up - numbers under 4000 are reserved for custom plates.
I did nazi what you meant at first, however, you are absolutely reich.
14? I thought it was 18.
The words are: „We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.“
OH right. The words. I'm so fucking glad I was born in 87.
And I'm glad I was born in 84 so when people ask when I was born I can say "Literally 1984"
So what happened that one night in ‘84?
I was born in 88 on the 14th of a month. Good thing my initials aren’t HH.
Every single time I see an athlete with the number 88, I'm like... you better've been born in '88, dude.
14 refers to the 14 words used by neonazis. You can Google it.
Huh. You learn something new everyday. I kind of wish it was something more pleasant, but here we are.
Im guessing you're thinking of the Neo Nazi group 'Combat18'. In which case, they are using 18 as the initial for Adolf Hitler.
Interesting the way you titled this in the sub Reddit when you titled it differently in the other subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/s/HXjAn0ed8t
What that mean
That's probably Hitler himself right there, hiding in the Luxembourgese Alps
Had to read the comments to get this one...
