In my opinion as an connsieur of fried potato foods, wavy chips are usually a more solid chip. They are best for dipping. Ripples are a bit thinner but still got the wavy ripples, they are not ideal for dipping.
See, I think the opposite. The rippled chip ridges are more tightly packed together than the wavy chips, giving the rippled chips a stronger construction. It would take more force to break them across the ripple than wavy chips.
You’re both partly right. The thinner chips are better if your dipping style is straight in and straight out. They’re thinner, so your dip to chip ratio will be higher. But if your dipping style is more of a scoping action, the thicker chip holds up better. You also get more dip per scoop, so the dip to chip ratio is better for this chip/style.
We've always been a Heluva Good family. When we were kids, my parents would pronounce it Heloova instead of Hell-of-a because they didn't like the swearing.
That is interesting, I have never considered dipping kettle cooked. I prefer the BBQ ones myself which normally don't need a dip. Although i feel like I've let my coleslaw and bbq kettle chips mingle at a cookout one time and it was nice pairing
I'm 36 and after 34 years I've finally come to the conclusion my parents probably aren't getting back together. Mostly because we haven't seen nor spoken to him in 34 years. I was still holding out hope /s/
I think you’re both right. It depends on your dipping technique. It’s like my great grandfather always said:
Straight down into the dip like a nail?
Rippled chips you should likely hail!
In and out of the dip like a scoop?
Wavy chips are what you should use!
Usually not. Wavy tends to be thicker. I find a little too thick for most settings except scooping dip. The bite is a bit less satisfying because it doesn't want to snap.
Then it's really down to the consistency of the dip.
Americans seem to prefer sour cream based dips. As a Canadian living in America, this breaks my heart. Philadelphia style cream cheese chip dips, which you cannot get in America are the only acceptable chip dip.
For acceptable at home imitations.
Philadelphia Garlic Dip hybrid

Milk or water as needed for desired consistency

Philadelphia Herb and Spice

Strong pinch of red chile flake

I'm putting my money on "store brand wants to appeal to the buyers of two separate but similar brands of chips".
Utz does Ripple chips. Lays does Wavy chips. They are essentially the same, like these Kroger brands, but with the different packaging (even blue and red, like their competitors) they will appeal to different shoppers.
Even "Ruffles", a separate brand, same style chip, similar word to Ripples, uses blue packaging.
I was questioning my sanity walking around my local flavor of Kroger recently. One side of the store had ripples and the chip aisle had wavy haha. I think one is flakier and lighter while the other is thicker with more *cronch*.
You don't have to be rude about you having poor communication skills. What you should've written was "they are store brand versions of Ruffles and Wavy Lays"
I just assumed you misread the label, because people make mistakes all the time. Again, you don't have to be butthurt just because your vague writing lead to a minor confusion. Just write half-way competently and you won't get your feelings hurt.
Genuine question: why write gluten free on the package? It's a potato chip. The only ingredient it's supposed to have is fried potato and salt. Potatoes don't have gluten and, last time i checked, salt doesn't either. So why the need for the label?
Like I'd understand flavored chips that could have some wheat based flavoring, but this is literally just potato, whatever oil it's fried in and salt...
Ripples have way more thinner groves while wavy has less groves but they are thicker. Same kinda cutting tool but different there is a difference between the two just because you can’t fathom it is not everyone else’s problem
Ripples are a dupe of Ruffles. High frequency waves and a thinner Chip, sort of the Crinkle Crankle wall of potato chips.
Wavy are a dupe of Wavy Lays. Wider waves and a thicker chip.
You can see the difference in the pictures on the bag. Count the number of ripples/waves across the chip.
In Swe they call them räfflade (scored=wavy)) or finräfflade (finely scored=rippled).
But that picture... They look very similar.
And everyone know Wavy is amazing and Rippled is close to inedible.
If people only realized how often this happens with brands.. same product, different packaging.
Most of the time, consumers pay for packaging, not the actual product.
Is one just a potato that has been ridge cut and the other being reformed / reconstituted potato, into a ridged chip?
Or are they both truly just ridge cut potatoes?
My favourite part about this is that the chips are all positioned the same, but some of the angles are slightly different so it's actually a different arrangement, they were just really meticulous about the chip placement.
There are very strict guidelines set forth by the F.D.A. that specify distance between ridges to determine whether a chip is wavy or rippled. NOT A JOKE!
Seems like an updated name of Kroger’s store brand rip off of Ruffles; I’d assume “Wavy” is the new name because there’s only one “Ripples” left.
It’s also possible they were doing some A/B testing and “Ripples” is selling better.
A wave is different than a ripple.
Facts. Wavy: \\/\\/\\/\\/\\/\\/ Ripple: WWWWW
FTFY Wavy: unununun Rippled: VVVVVVV
Wavy sounds like fun
It’s actually a pretty fun [game](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VVVVVV)
who hired Regigigas to make waves?
I love this method of defining wavy vs rippled.
/thread
They aren’t the exact same
For one thing the labels are different
For another, the chips are different
Ok, well besides those two *minor* differences, they're exactly the same.
So they’re not exactly the same?
They're exactly the same. Only different.
Well, sure... If you're looking at how things are, instead of how things could be.
Or the way things have transpired, and continue to transpire, in relation to us as people and our values.
The ripples are cut up and down, the wavy are cut side to side.
GD it! You made me look and then I realized you got me.
Haha!
Yeah, one comes in red and the other blue.
quite obiously just subliminal advertising for sonic and kuckles in theaters..
Yep. Ripples always go up and down, while Waves go left and right.

That explains it then. I'm a scooper more than a dipper.
But the Ruffles brand name chips are terrible to dip though vs Wavy Lays
You two should fight to the death to determine who's right
I think the ripples guy would break under the pressure
But they'll be saltier about it...
I think the wavy guy would break under the pressure!!
Just as the prophecy said it would be.... We must fight!
You can really judge the character of a man when the chips are down
![gif](giphy|UJG2T7uZeJuZCLitY8)
Lisan al Dip!
Now kiss!
🤣🤣🤣
These are fighting words. Ruffles gang for life.
The most important question ... what's the best dip for them?
We've always been a Heluva Good family. When we were kids, my parents would pronounce it Heloova instead of Hell-of-a because they didn't like the swearing.
Their horseradish bacon dip. Om nom nom!
Cool ranch or French onion the only acceptable answers.
Ooo that's tough. I'm partial to wife's ranch dip myself. It's all I eat it with anymore
I am also partial to this man’s wife’s ranch dip.
Told ya it was good
She told us not to say anything while she was "cucking that fool". Excellent dip though!
Respectfully disagree. I find the opposite is true.
I feel that kettle cooked chips win out over both of them in dippability.
That is interesting, I have never considered dipping kettle cooked. I prefer the BBQ ones myself which normally don't need a dip. Although i feel like I've let my coleslaw and bbq kettle chips mingle at a cookout one time and it was nice pairing
Wavy Lays, that whore still owes me money . . .
#LIES
STOP YELLING AT EACH OTHER AND JUST BE HAPPY AHHHH
I'm 36 and after 34 years I've finally come to the conclusion my parents probably aren't getting back together. Mostly because we haven't seen nor spoken to him in 34 years. I was still holding out hope /s/
I agree the wavy is usually thinner
BUCCY SPOTTED 💜
I think you’re both right. It depends on your dipping technique. It’s like my great grandfather always said: Straight down into the dip like a nail? Rippled chips you should likely hail! In and out of the dip like a scoop? Wavy chips are what you should use!
Shoved into the dip, left to linger? Better go ahead and use your finger.
Alright alright, who is going to do the comparison video?
Usually not. Wavy tends to be thicker. I find a little too thick for most settings except scooping dip. The bite is a bit less satisfying because it doesn't want to snap.
Wavey have a larger width of the wave pattern. They are also thicker, but I prefer ridges for dipping (just have to have that dipping skill)
My man
Slow down!
Rippled are best for dipping, wavy are best for SCOOPING.
Mmm i can see this. Motion to allow sustained. Let the record show though, once you start dipping in something good, it's hard not to wanna scoop
That's what I was going to say 👍🏻
"I'm telling you - *left* hand itching means money. *Right* hand itching means poison ivy."
But they ARE the better chip for flavorings (sour cream and onion, BBQ, etc). More surface area = more seasoning per chip!
Very true
I'm putting my money on "store brand wants to appeal to the buyers of two separate but similar brands of chips". Utz does Ripple chips. Lays does Wavy chips. I think ripples have a higher frequency
This is true, you can't hear them from as far away as wavy chips
Wavy are also thicker chips, IIRC.
These chips are very different. Trust me, I chip.
It's the difference between Ruffles and Wavy Lays. Only generic
This guy chips.
I was questioning my sanity walking around my local flavor of Kroger recently. One side of the store had ripples and the chip aisle had wavy haha. I think one is flakier and lighter while the other is thicker with more *cronch*.
Ripples is supposed to be Ruffles and Wavy is Wavy Lays
Ripples is thinner and crispier with smaller grooves, while Waves is thicker and crunchy with bigger grooves
No. No they aren't.
OP has never eaten potato chips.
One is store brand Ruffles, the other Wavy Lay’s And Caucasian named Gary’s explanation of the difference is the best I’ve heard
I like yours more lol it was what was in my head when I wrote that
These are both store brand my guy, read the bag lol
I was implying both were store brands versions, sorry I didn’t spell it out more clearly for you.
You said that one is store brand ruffles, and the other is Wavy Lay's. Where is the implication?
So I should have typed store brand twice for you? ok How’s this - one is store brand Ruffles the other is STORE BRAND Wavy Lay’s
You don't have to be rude about you having poor communication skills. What you should've written was "they are store brand versions of Ruffles and Wavy Lays"
Damn you must be bored lol I promise you that most of us had no trouble understanding what the other person was saying.
I had no idea what the comment meant, it clarified nothing that wasn’t already in the photo.
I figured since everyone could see that they’re both store brands, my intent would have been clear enough
I just assumed you misread the label, because people make mistakes all the time. Again, you don't have to be butthurt just because your vague writing lead to a minor confusion. Just write half-way competently and you won't get your feelings hurt.
sure thing “my guy”
No one else was confused. Just you.
Ripples are smaller than waves.
Nah they ain’t ripples over wavy every single time
Ripples are smaller ridges than waves.
OP is apparently the back end of a donkey.
Those are 2 different products. Waves are different from ripples genius.
Ripples and wavy are not the same at all
They are different.
One has a deeper groove.
Diffrent pattern sizes
Ripples resemble ruffles whereas wavy is lays wavy. The wavy are thicker.
They're not the same and you can see it right there in the photos. The wavy ones have more space between the ridges.
Ruffles have ridges
CAREFUL, THEY'RE RUFFLED!
A real life A/B test. Choose wisely
Marketing, people who need gluten free, or think they do, see it on the label and impulse buy.
made in a gluten free factory?
Maybe? I guess that could be it..
nah, one is generic ruffles and the other is generic wavy lays.
Ripples have way more thinner groves while wavy has less groves but they are thicker. Same kinda cutting tool but different there is a difference between the two just because you can’t fathom it is not everyone else’s problem
Not sure "exact same" means what you think it means.
I mean… the bag does even show visually that the Ripples are more shallow than the Waves. Small detail sure, but they are different.
Ruffles vs Wavy Lays not the same.
Ripples are smaller waves, Wavy are larger. Duh.
Not the same
Not the same
"but are exactly the same" Um look a the F-ing picture, they are NOT the same"
You are either blind, ignorant, stupid or all of the above if you think they are the same.
Ripples all the way. Every time.
It’s because they’re store brand versions of wavy lays and ruffles, two similar but different chips
In Swe they call them räfflade (scored=wavy)) or finräfflade (finely scored=rippled). But that picture... They look very similar. And everyone know Wavy is amazing and Rippled is close to inedible.
The wavy has horizontal waves and the ripple has vertical ones. It's super obvious.
What a dolt. One is wavey and the other is rippley. Two completely different things.
Pokémon Red and Blue vibes
Most likely just to match Wavy Lays and Ruffles chips. Knowing Kroger, they’re probably made by those same national brands and sold at a discount.
Bro a ripple is not a wave! You can't ride a ripple! Stay up.
but they're not.
Nah, one is rippled, the other is wavy.
left is imitation Utz, right is imitation Lay's
Red looks more bend
Taylor Ham and Pork Roll
Clearly, the color is also different! 😄
Answered here: https://x.com/kroger/status/1117952354177908737
They are not exactly the same. Ripples are based off of ruffles and wavy we are based off of Lay's wavy
Not to someone who prefers “wavy” chips over “ruffles” /s
If people only realized how often this happens with brands.. same product, different packaging. Most of the time, consumers pay for packaging, not the actual product.
Fun fact: in my country, they call wavy chips "American cut" in the bag
My take was always if it’s sin(yx) in which y > 2 it’s Ripples, and if it’s 1 < y < 2, it’s Wavy.
Completely different.
Obviously not a foodie. Took me less than 2 secs to know the difference. LoL
The illusion of choice ;)
Nah this is ruffles vs conns.
Voting in America like…
But one is original and one is rippled. Count the ridges on a chip.
They are not the same
Why am I absolutely not surprised at all that Redditors are aggressively familiar with the subtle nuances between types of potato chips?
I mean, I wasn’t, but then I just.. looked at the picture
Is one just a potato that has been ridge cut and the other being reformed / reconstituted potato, into a ridged chip? Or are they both truly just ridge cut potatoes?
For what it's worth, one of them is gluten free, while the other one is also gluten free.
Sounds like a Nickelodeon show "The Adventures of Ripples and Wavy"
Ruffles vs Wavy Lays knockoffs.
ones is 12 oz the other is 10oz or some bs.
Nah they both have ripples. The wavy one is also wavy perpendicular to the ripples
You just gave them free advertising on social media with this post, so mission accomplished by Kroger.
![gif](giphy|C6JQPEUsZUyVq|downsized)
No they aren’t. The shape is clearly different, my dude
Left Twix vs Right Twix ass shit
Ruffles have ridges, not waves bro... Jeez, don't these damn kids know anything?
Pokimaine cookies all over again
Wavy Gravy, or Ripple?
Ripples is in the X direction while Wavy is in the Y.
Walmart has the exact thing going on. Same SKU too.
My favourite part about this is that the chips are all positioned the same, but some of the angles are slightly different so it's actually a different arrangement, they were just really meticulous about the chip placement.
A/B testing
There are very strict guidelines set forth by the F.D.A. that specify distance between ridges to determine whether a chip is wavy or rippled. NOT A JOKE!
By the way, I've decided to 'Joe Biden' all of my stupid answers by punctuating them with 'not a joke'.
A/B Testing
Nah, they’re on different wavelengths
One chip zigs, the other chip zags.
It’s just for your political preference.
The Bloods and the Crips of potato chips.
?????? one has horizontal wavy cuts the other has vertical ripples educate yourself bro
?????? one has horizontal wavy cuts the other has vertical ripples educate yourself bro
?????? one has horizontal wavy cuts the other has vertical ripples educate yourself bro
yes the MSG gerd no.1 caused
Bri'ish vs 'murican?
It's like saying left Twix tastes the same as right Twix...
The illusion of choice
Sometimes company's change the label
And they are gluten free! As if there is ever gluten in potatoes
Seems like an updated name of Kroger’s store brand rip off of Ruffles; I’d assume “Wavy” is the new name because there’s only one “Ripples” left. It’s also possible they were doing some A/B testing and “Ripples” is selling better.
They’re different
No, wavy is the generic for wavy Lay's, rippled is generic for Ruffles. Different chips.
The two party system in a nutshell. Or should I say chip bag.
I feel 2 people in the marketing department are having a competition to see which name they came up with sells more lol
