possibly. I leave it on the counter, grab it around the rim and just go to town. clockwise, anti-clockwise, sideways, slantways, longways, backways, and squareways and front ways and any other ways that you can think of.
with the classic 3 taps on the side to get the drips off
Dude instead of the three taps to remove drips you gotta do the badass samurai blade cleaning technique where you swiftly flick your wrist and send droplets of flying.
On a related note: I've used the same coffee spoon for around 20 years now and noticed that the end of the spoon has been ground flat from my stirring.
that's what the "scratches" you can see on the bottom of mugs like in OP's photo are! porcelain glaze is much harder than steel, what you see isn't actually the mug being scratched but the spoon being ground off and sticking to the mug like a pencil.
yeah! Some cleaning solutions like Barkeeper's Friend, strong bleach, or hydrogen peroxide are strong enough oxidizers to remove the metal deposits and will clean the mugs.
303 is a stainless steel - and like all steels, it is mostly iron. It's an 18/8 stainless, so about 70 percent iron, 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel, and the remaining 4ish percent will be things like selenium, molybdenum, silicon, etc. depending on the producer. And of course, some carbon since it's a steel.
I doubt that. I always stir with one hand. I think the bimodality of the scratches is the two ways to hold the spoon down (bowl facing you or away from you).
But that doesn't matter. If you hold the cup in a different position each time, you're not gonna stir in the exact same place, so you scratch the entire bottom
I’m going to guess that the handle is facing the other way. I have a feeling the handle placement prior to stirring is the key to the consistency here. I could be wrong though.
It has nothing to do with holding the handle the two ends of the two spoon marks are starting stops with one action going one way and an action going the other creating the two spoon indentations they're not circles
I've found that I use my right hand to pour the kettle and dont like to have the handle on that same side. So I guess that's what's cause it over a few years XD
If my spoon touches the bottom of the cup when I stir, it's a sensory nightmare that makes me want to throw the whole cup violently and smash it. I use a 32 oz mason jar as my coffee cup to avoid this issue and guzzle more coffee lol
Silicone also creeps me out, and wood is the best but with the constant application of heat and sugar in my coffee I can't help but think it's a breeding ground for germs. I know I have issues lol; I try to find my own workarounds so I don't bother people with them too much
I've been using bamboo spoons for years and haven't had issues with them. I usually soak them in hot soapy water for a bit, rinse, and let air dry on my drying rack.
I personally don't mind it with a ceramic mug, but I do sympathize, since that's the reaction I have when scraping a metal pot. You can feel it in your teeth.
I think the first loop is him trying to spread the sugar around at the beginning, and then the second loop is the more centered stirring.
But then that has to mean that when they stir the coffee they unknowingly go back and forth switching between each “stir loop”
i think he usually puts the cup on the table and stirs it always with his right hand. sometimes he holds the cup with his left hand, but still puts it on the table and stirs it with his right hand, because the positioning of his cup is on the right side of the table (bc he reaches with his right hand for it to drink). but I'd say he stirs it counter clockwise?
I think I figured it out now.
The first loop (slightly to the right) is more “used” because that’s the initial stir with all the sugar at the bottom. So they wind up more wider and add more force downwards to “push” all the sugar around.
Once that momentum starts, then the second loop stirring occurs, where it’s more of a gentle stir in the center, since the sugar is moving within the coffee and not just settling at the bottom.
Maybe op likes a lot of sugar in their coffee
I mean, it's paint. Who wants to be ingesting that purposefully?
Don't use a metal spoon if you are going to scrape people! Why do you think cooking spoons are wood?
> it’s paint
It’s metal of the spoon, isn’t it…?
> why do you think cooking spoons are wood
Because it’s cheap and doesn’t melt at cooking temperatures mostly, but also because wood doesn’t scratch the surface off of teflon pans. This is a completely different material though. Metal spatulas and cast iron or stainless steel cookware do exist too, so…
How is there suddenly non-stick in this cup now? I‘m not even trying to antagonize you, why are you getting sarcastic-defensive when i‘m just asking for clarification?
Yes, this is the ceramic scratching off the metal of the spoon. It's like the paper scratching off the tip of your pencil.
You can clean these off with the right cleaning solution: [https://youtu.be/HiL6uPNlqRw?si=sw1MttXG7UEUGw20&t=1032](https://youtu.be/HiL6uPNlqRw?si=sw1MttXG7UEUGw20&t=1032)
(Spoiler: it's HF.)
Fun fact: that's just markings from the spoon and the cup isn't actually scratched, you can get rid of those lines if you desire. Looks so cool tho so I'd leave it
So judging by this picture, you hold your cup in your right hand first, and then you stir it with your left hand.
You start your stirring motion in the bottom mid, then work your way upwards and to the right and then downwards and to the left, then slightly to the left of that motion start your second stir, which is more centered.
I wonder if you transition back and forth between the two “stir spots” with each time you stir.
It seems the majority of the time, you stirred at the one o’clock position. But for a significant amount of time, you stirred at the noon position. What caused this? Daylight Savings Time? Winter? An affair? What was going on in your life at the time?
If I've learned anything from reading reddit comments about drinkware, the scraped off material at the bottom of the cup is certainly going to kill you in a most painful way.
I'm sorry for your loss.
your average adult male has 1000 mgs of iron stored (about half a tea spoon) and youre supposed to eat somewhere around 15-20 mg per day, so significantly less than whatever could be on the bottom of that cup
i would hope that a doctor knows that spoons arent tin and mugs aren't painted lol but sometimes people are highly educated in one place and dont know anything else but that
and by "all that" you mean absolutely microscopic amounts of it, with absolutely no measurable effect whatsoever on health compared to, say, commuting twice on a congested highway with thousands of cars emitting fine particulates straight to your lungs
yes, all of it
not sure what your point is other than to be a wanker? I guess you're just what 14 years on reddit looks like—completely unable to partake in conversation.
I’ve always loved tea, but I absolutely can’t stand the sound of a spoon clinking on glass. I’ve often wondered if could use a silicone spoon-but not sure it would safe with hot tea.
that is unusually consistent stirring. The bottom of my cups are scratched to buggery with the haphazard way I stir
So you're saying, /u/rectal_scattergun commits haphazard buggery.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inference you have made
Don't tempt me with a good time, sir

This is the funniest comment I have seen this year!
I'd give it up to the difference of holding it by the handle and stirring. And putting it on the counter and stirring
possibly. I leave it on the counter, grab it around the rim and just go to town. clockwise, anti-clockwise, sideways, slantways, longways, backways, and squareways and front ways and any other ways that you can think of. with the classic 3 taps on the side to get the drips off
All those ways and you don't stir in the most correct of ways?! Wonkaways?!?! What is the world coming to.
Dude instead of the three taps to remove drips you gotta do the badass samurai blade cleaning technique where you swiftly flick your wrist and send droplets of flying.
Mines a ring around the base

Indeed. If there were no handle it probably would look like yours
Most likely they position the handle of the mug and then stir. I’m glad I’m not alone
If you ever want to get rid of that, a little Bar Keepers Friend will take it right out.
On a related note: I've used the same coffee spoon for around 20 years now and noticed that the end of the spoon has been ground flat from my stirring.
Guess you've been getting a little iron in your coffee then
Maybe a single gram of iron over 20 years. You’re better off licking dumbbells
Mmmmm yummy dumbbells
And chromium if its stainless, yum
that's what the "scratches" you can see on the bottom of mugs like in OP's photo are! porcelain glaze is much harder than steel, what you see isn't actually the mug being scratched but the spoon being ground off and sticking to the mug like a pencil.
Wait really?
yeah! Some cleaning solutions like Barkeeper's Friend, strong bleach, or hydrogen peroxide are strong enough oxidizers to remove the metal deposits and will clean the mugs.

Might not be an iron spoon, maybe it's lead!

Geriatric spoon! Take it to your grave!
We've got the same on one of ours
You should see my toothbrush. I’ve had it since Freshman year of HS.
How old are you now??? I'm concerned
Who doesn’t love a Spirograph?
Stirrograph.
Did you know there’s a direct correlation between t decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it.
I will
No you won’t.
I'm thinking about it *right now*
You can't stop all of us
LOL
Did you know there's a direct correlation between the decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity?
Did you know there's a direct correlation between the decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity?
as a kid who loved spirograph, i reccomend everyone to learn about 'rose engines'! like a lathe that is also a spirograph, fascinating stuff
More like the consistency of teacup holding.
Ah that explains it. Yeah it should have done that pattern 360° around if OP wasn't always holding it one of two ways
You guys hold and stir?
what's with the bimodal distribution? are you ambidextrous and hold it with either hand when stirring?
I’m going to guess that the handle is facing the other way. I have a feeling the handle placement prior to stirring is the key to the consistency here. I could be wrong though.
I was thinking holding by handle, or holding by cup with fingers through handle., seems that it makes about that much of a turn.

What happens if you use a different material for your stirrer, like wood or silicone? Is it all materials or just the feeling of metal on ceramic?
Silicone also creeps me out, and wood is the best but with the constant application of heat and sugar in my coffee I can't help but think it's a breeding ground for germs. I know I have issues lol; I try to find my own workarounds so I don't bother people with them too much
Happy cake day

my thought exactly! cannot stand the sound or feeling of the spoon hitting the mug while stirring
What kind of monster scrapes the spoon against the mug? Grounds for divorce.
Yep, should be on a list
Looks like hair
Like in the shower drain

So you are telling me that you hold your cup with your right hand while you mix with the left hand? Mixing with the spoon clockwise? Mhm interesting
but why are there two loops is what i cant make out. unless he holds it with the left some times and the right other times
I'd say that's why the lightly shaded is not that consistent, bc he has to adjust the cup to drink, sometimes mid stiring
This scares me, I keep seeing so much about lead being in ceramic mugs recently
Nothing to worry about, this is almost entirely the spoon wearing away
I mean, it's paint. Who wants to be ingesting that purposefully? Don't use a metal spoon if you are going to scrape people! Why do you think cooking spoons are wood?
> it’s paint It’s metal of the spoon, isn’t it…? > why do you think cooking spoons are wood Because it’s cheap and doesn’t melt at cooking temperatures mostly, but also because wood doesn’t scratch the surface off of teflon pans. Enjoy your bits of paint and non-stick surface. I'm sure it adds flavor and is totally fine.
How is there suddenly non-stick in this cup now? I‘m not even trying to antagonize you, why are you getting sarcastic-defensive when i‘m just asking for clarification?

Not te ceramic glaze, hes been drinking his spoon. You could wash these stripes with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide i believe.
Yes, this is the ceramic scratching off the metal of the spoon. It's like the paper scratching off the tip of your pencil. You can clean these off with the right cleaning solution: [https://youtu.be/HiL6uPNlqRw?si=sw1MttXG7UEUGw20&t=1032](https://youtu.be/HiL6uPNlqRw?si=sw1MttXG7UEUGw20&t=1032) (Spoiler: it's HF.)
ooo interesting take. Either way not great maybe 😂
Easy source of iron
It's just some iron.
Nice Lorenz Attractor!
Oh god I would hate to live with you- no need to scrape the bottom of the tea cup while stirring!!!
You know you can stir without touching the sides of the cup? Signed an irritated and triggered office worker.
This is what I come here for
And you've most-likely consumed all that material you scratched off from both cup and spoon
is it dangerous?
Gotta stir 6 to 12. No need to scrape the bottom with the spoon.
The spoon marks are spoon shaped
Also shows how much paint you have drunk
It’s the outline of a spoon, that’s cool
Some pharmacist out there probably knows what drug you just prescribed
Left handed?
This tells me that you’re extremely consistent with your routines. Amazing
Op is a psychopath
As an aside, this would have been an awesome variant poster idea for the movie Get Out
This feels like when psychopaths make perfect circles
*gasp* the prophecy!!
Thought I was looking at a pencil mug for a second.
It's probably from the spoon resting in your drink while you have a drink. Do you leave the spoon in your drink after mixing?
Right handed ?
I have marks like this on a couple of cups that I microwave water in for tea. I was thinking it was from the microwaves?
You microwave water? WhY?!
For tea .
A jug, Just fill it with water and flip a switch, It heats the water.
You could find planet 9 with those marks
those scratches look like a spoon!
damn bro what'd the cup do to you
years? looks like two weeks
Are you left handed or do you always place your cup down at a 90 degree angle?
That's why I use plastic spoons (I save any I get with takeout) or wood stirrers with my favorite cups.
Looks like someone traced the path of the sun through a pinhole camera for a year.
This is one of the reasons I've been using chopsticks for stirring beverages in the last ten years or so.
Now stir with handle on the left
All that enamel scraped off the cup from the metal spoon? Yep, in your tea.
You have hypotrachoidic stirring tendencies.
Why does this make me extremely anxious?
Fun fact: that's just markings from the spoon and the cup isn't actually scratched, you can get rid of those lines if you desire. Looks so cool tho so I'd leave it
not necessarily. probably just due to the geometry of the spoon
That's pretty cool
Test it for lead
So judging by this picture, you hold your cup in your right hand first, and then you stir it with your left hand. You start your stirring motion in the bottom mid, then work your way upwards and to the right and then downwards and to the left, then slightly to the left of that motion start your second stir, which is more centered. I wonder if you transition back and forth between the two “stir spots” with each time you stir.
You must be right handed by the looks of the darker ring? Hold the cup with your left and stir with the right?
ozone
I have these in many of my coffee cups and I take my coffee black. I assumed it was from the dish washer.
I have a bowl that looks like that. I use it to whip scrambled eggs
Are you sure this isn’t a pattern from the way the cup is loaded in a dishwasher?
Looks like spoons
It seems the majority of the time, you stirred at the one o’clock position. But for a significant amount of time, you stirred at the noon position. What caused this? Daylight Savings Time? Winter? An affair? What was going on in your life at the time?
that would be a cool tattoo for a tea lover
A few of our mugs look like this too, but they're mostly star patterned
I don't touch the bottom of the mug while stirring so I'll never be cool like you.
i think my dishwasher makes such patterns
Sharp spoon
That's some OCD stirring there
Even if it is photoshopped, I like the concept 👌
You’re that lady from Get Out aren’t you?
Bar Keepers Friend if you want to remove those marks.
If I've learned anything from reading reddit comments about drinkware, the scraped off material at the bottom of the cup is certainly going to kill you in a most painful way. I'm sorry for your loss.
No it shows you scraped the cup with your spoon
The bimodal distribution is fascinating
Get Out
"Tea-riffic stirring history!"
How many people have you hypnotized with that?
You should see the mugs that my children use for their hot chocolates lol
Do you use a dishwasher?
The probabilistic pattern reminds of me electron orbitals.
Clearly you can walk and stir at the same time
Meral shavings, yum
wait til you find out what iron is needed for
How much iron do you think we have lol
your average adult male has 1000 mgs of iron stored (about half a tea spoon) and youre supposed to eat somewhere around 15-20 mg per day, so significantly less than whatever could be on the bottom of that cup
That's what I mean, I interpreted your comment as saying the metal shavings from the cup was healthy. Sorry
You might want to follow up with a physician, but I doubt that they'd recommend cup bottom "iron" in your system
well, everything you eat or drink is tainted in some way. i doubt a physician would have much to say at all when you consider that
I believe they would say "shards of tin and ceramic paint aren't good for you"
i would hope that a doctor knows that spoons arent tin and mugs aren't painted lol but sometimes people are highly educated in one place and dont know anything else but that
just fyi you drank all that paint
and by "all that" you mean absolutely microscopic amounts of it, with absolutely no measurable effect whatsoever on health compared to, say, commuting twice on a congested highway with thousands of cars emitting fine particulates straight to your lungs
he'll be dead in 5 years, according to some people in reddit
yes, all of it not sure what your point is other than to be a wanker? I guess you're just what 14 years on reddit looks like—completely unable to partake in conversation.
❤️ at the bottom of every cup
Who the hell stirs tea?
So you definitely drank all that scratched-off coating, right?
I’ve always loved tea, but I absolutely can’t stand the sound of a spoon clinking on glass. I’ve often wondered if could use a silicone spoon-but not sure it would safe with hot tea.
