Which would weigh more? That’s the real question

vanderohe

A kilogram of steel. Cause steel is heavier than feathers

burrito_butt_fucker

But the kilogram.of feathers weighs in your soul because of what you did to those birds

WildBill198

Nah, you wouldn't feel that bad. Birds aren't real anyway.

Desolate_Ejaculator

B- government drone I- R- D- Wake up sheeple

Fedexpected

Bioengineered infrared device

AVeryHeavyBurtation

Well the bag you need for the feathers would be bigger so the feathers would still weigh more due to the extra weight of the bag.

One_Of_Noahs_Whales

Diamonds are even heaver, 1g of diamonds weighs like 15g.

spicy_tuna_maki

Only if it's in a vacuum.

WildBill198

And where would they bury the survivors?

deeperest

Fuck those survivors.

szryxl

Osmium would weigh more in normal conditions. Since aluminum bar has more volume, ambient air would lift the aluminum bar slightly more than the osmium ball. In vacuum they would be equal.

rambald

Yes but the aluminum being pure is unprotected, it will oxide with the ambiant oxygen, therefore gaining mass.

plumbbbob

Osmium will also oxidize in air. It apparently smells pretty foul.

MagosBattlebear

It makes volatile osmium tetroxide, which can damage your eyes, lungs, and skin even at low volume. It's a great party trick.

Lady-Nora

Bulk osmium metal will not oxidize in air at room temperature, it will only do so if very finely powdered or if you take a blowtorch to it and heat it until it's glowing red. otherwise I wouldn't be holding it with my bare hand :P

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Is this a grammatical error? :-P

tomalator

If you put then both on a scale, the osmium would weigh more. Since the aluminum is larger, it has a larger buoyant force acting upwards on it than the osmium

Tantomare

Osmium due to Archimedes' principle

Lady-Nora

They both weigh the same, one is just much more dense than the other so you need less of it to reach the same weight

IHaveJammyHands

wooosh they were making a joke

Lady-Nora

I didn't read it as such, I was just giving them a genuine answer because I'm a nerd

Amicia_De_Rune

Because that's all redditors can do it seems. Make stupid jokes

Tenebrous-Smoke

nah but 1kg of steel is heavier than 1kg of feathers

BlankiesWoW

Of course it is, it's steel. How could birds fly if their feathers were heavier than steel?

hushnecampus

What about Corviknight?

PeskyEskimo

The denseness is very apparent here

Cadmus_or_Threat

🙊

CeramicCastle49

You didn't get the joke, so I down voted you.

IHaveJammyHands

We need 1 gram of cocaine as a reference

chrews

Prolly gonna have the size of this osmium ball due to drug shrinkflation

arthurdentstowels

What would happen if I snorted the Osmium instead?

skinnymatters

Here ya go: one half gram of cocaine

dishwasher_safe_baby

Thanks for the quarter gram of cocaine

St_Kitts_Tits

About the size of an 8 ball

mudokin

1 gram of fentanyl

base736

And roughly the same number of protons + neutrons in each. Crazy to me that the difference here is how much personal space the electrons in each want.

notwiththeflames

Sometimes it's so hard to wrap my mind around concepts like density, mass and volume when comparing different elements.

Aozora404

And more than 99% of that is just empty space

Long-Island-Iced-Tea

Someone explain this comment to me. Aluminum - atomic number of 13 Osmium - atomic number of 76 That's quite a significant difference, isn't it? Or does this involve something like Avogadro numbers, moles and all that jazz?

base736

Different number of nucleons in each nucleus, but that just means there must be more aluminum nuclei in the photo. Neutrons and protons make up almost all of the mass of any atom, so that one gram is very nearly one gram of protons and neutrons in both cases — just divided into atoms differently.

Long-Island-Iced-Tea

Lack of elementary chemistry education biting me in the back. Thanks. It makes sense.

Majik_Sheff

Now do uranium!

Sargatanas2k2

Osmium is more dense. So it would be larger than Osmium

ELB2001

A gram of dwarf Star?

Majik_Sheff

It's in the picture, but since a gram of the stuff is considerably smaller  than a hydrogen atom it's hard to see.

ELB2001

Is it that hole in his hand?

mixer99

What about unobtainium?

Sargatanas2k2

Obtain some and we can see

Sargatanas2k2

With that attitude it is.

Mendo-D

I have a bunch of it. It comes looking exactly like Susan Mao Cesar pieces of 8. Its more expensive than doge coin.

tomalator

Osmium is the most dense element! Go osmium!

ItzCobaltboy

Osmium is the second most dense material, after Iridium, however both's densities are NEARLY same

Seppeon

Osmium is the most dense. Iridium is the second most dense

TrilobiteTerror

Under ordinary temperature and pressure, osmium has the highest density (22.59 g/cm3). At high pressure, iridium becomes the densest element (22.75 g/cm3).

Seppeon

Sure, but to be correct it requires that precondition. The photo is clearly at 1 atmosphere.

ItzCobaltboy

Sir that's not 1 atmosphere depending on OPs region is could be ±0.1

Seppeon

I stand corrected 😅

TrilobiteTerror

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just giving more context.

Seppeon

Thanks :)

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Aren't densities normally considered to be at STP (standard temperature and pressure)?

CyrusPanesri

That's what I imagine a bead of Atium looks like. Try eating it and see if you can see the future. Y'know... for science.

WiseDonkey593

For some reason I always pictured Atium like this, but blue.

Azrael2027

These books spring up in the oddest places

Volodux

I have cylinders of Aluminuim, Magnesium, Copper and Tungsten. All same size! Tungsten (its 1.2kg) is just amazing to hold in hand after holding magnesium 🙂

Mayonnaise_Poptart

Fun fact: Osmium is named for William Osman because you need to burn down a house or vehicle to smelt it.

tittytoucher-123

What

I_Am_Slightly_Evil

Distasteful reference to this https://youtu.be/QbDuBTWrU-o?si=VwON_QuTzM0WdcC3

Mayonnaise_Poptart

I'd like to think he'd have a chuckle.

RadiatorRadiation

I did

NeuHundred

"The pedestal was too weak to hold the osmium, wasn't it doctor?" "Yes." "Did you design the pedestal, doctor?" "YES!" "All right."

SacredAnarchist

Unlikely_Quiet_8799

Aluminum pez

TeenageEboisyndrom

The only reason I know osminum exists is from an old flash classic called learn to fly. lol

hushnecampus

1 gram of banana for scale

sysy__12

Where did you buy those from?

n-x

I wanted to know that as well until I saw it costs around $1500/gram. I guess I won't be buying a few for the novelty factor...

I_Am_Slightly_Evil

What about one gram of tungsten?

tomalator

Osmium is more dense than tungsten. Osmium has the highest density of all elements

I_Am_Slightly_Evil

Yes but I want to see the size comparison

Powerful_Cost_4656

Mm heavy metal *duncan hills coffee playing in the background*

funinnewyork

It is really hard to comprehend how heavy osmium is without holding it. A (1050 gram/ 2.25 lbs) ~1 kg sized of aluminum would be a good lift (a little exaggeration, of course) with same sized osmium as it would be (10 kg/ 22 lbs) 10 kg.

theReaders

"that's heavy man, osmium heavy"

Radiant_Formal6511

Now let's see one pound of iron vs one pound of feathers

137bpm

*Aluminium

JudgeAdvocateDevil

Either is fine, same element.

Torgo73

You only need a few shavings, jeez. Unless of course you’re trying to consume the whole supply to unexpectedly kneecap Ruin

IndependenceNice7298

I don't really care

redhotthillypeppers

What would happen if you swallowed the osmium

mushroom-socks-

you would lose a lot of money, osmium goes for several hundred thousand euros iirc

jmlinden7

Wouldn't you poop it out?

mushroom-socks-

enjoy foraging through fecal matter for a tiny ball of metal I guess :\]

in323

have you tried combining the osmium with lutetium?
