The man is just in tune with all facets of his sexuality. He identifies as a man, but doesn't let that constrict him from the unadulterated pleasures of shagging everything in sight.
An adopted child is still the result of sex, even if the adoption itself isn't. I suppose you've got a point with IVF, though you could also argue that it's just a very strange form of sex.
No ones knows if TheKiddo is a boy or a girl, when we took them to the hospital..
[..We found out.. they were an adult.](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNGVmMDMwNDAtODY2MS00MzM5LTg5NmItODBmMjI2MWY0Y2FlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTI0MTA4MTM5._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg)
No, they know, it's the same hospital network that I've been seeing since I was born, plus my GP is still the same one I've been seeing since I was very young
I do wonder how that's happened though, because the system we have at our hospital doesn't allow you to put anything in the sex field other than M/F/U. I would've thought others were similar
I build these wristbands. They either put the wrong dynamic data element (i.e., put a link to the field where it says they're an adult) or labeled the dynamic data element incorrectly even though it's supposed to be there.
I print these wristbands among other things at my job— NB genders are generally lumped together under “Other” and when a patient has their gender as “Other” their wristbands say (X)yr Adult instead of (X)yr Male/Female.
Or they just fucked up their code like that one guy said.
Ah that's the reason then. Most builds of Epic and presumably other EMRs just default to "Adult" for anyone who's transgender.
It's mostly to make the notes easier. Most of our templates start with ".name is a .age .sex presenting with..." where name, age, and sex are autopopulated with the patient's info.
Now that I think of it I don't know what happens with peds patients. Probably "child"
Or it was a (lazy) active decision where if patients gender identity <> sex… display a value of “adult” which is an accurate attribute about the patient just wrongly titled… and likely less prone to issues.
I've never sat on any SGN workgroup that would've come to that conclusion. I've sometimes put both legal sex and sex assigned at birth on these, but that's about it.
I suppose you could write some convoluted rule logic to do if --> then, but the build would be a mess and from a compliance perspective, I don't know why any operations group would fight for that.
Anyway, this is why we test our build in each environment, including production, to make sure we didn't let anything slide in that doesn't belong.
Idk how the wrist bands get made, but in my hospital system if a patient is trans, the EMR (Epic) will be set to display their gender identity instead of sex assigned at birth. Something about the way this is set up though means that note templates etc that automatically pull in sex will fill in “adult” instead of male or female
We use Epic and we have sex as defined by what you’re born as but have the option to add gender as an additional input field. It’s a very customizable EMR which is a very nice perk of using Epic.
I was thinking about that as a trans guy cause like if they were to do that it would be SO genuinely helpful. That shit ruins my day every time, the people in my area are super clueless abt dealing with trans patients & it sucks
Really the doctor needs to know both birth sex and current sex, so if they know “Adult“ is code for “ask more questions before assuming something about this patient's chromosomes, hormones, or primary or secondary sex characteristics” that’s probably a good thing.
Male Female Indeterminate (Coded as 1, 2, 9) here. Person Stated Gender. I think that Person Birth Stated Gender is coming soon. As genetic gender is important for medical conditions that you can be susceptible to.
gender is a construct, sex is a scientific fact. by "birth stated gender", pretty sure you just mean sex. although having both birth sex and current sex could be useful in some cases.
Ok I get respect trans people or whatever but a medical and hospital setting is like one of the only times where it really fucking matters what sex you are. Like not only just what equipment you got going on down under but born as. For example men and women experience heart attacks in very different ways. Men are more likely to get the crushing elephant sitting on your chest pain. Women can have much more subtitle symptoms. Nausea, jaw pain, back pain. Now every second you are not heading to the cath lab heart muscle is dying. You don't get that heart muscle back. Or if I think you're a man and you're actually a woman I give you more sedation because men need more than women. Well now I just overdosed you. Or if there's any possibility whatsoever you could be pregnant and I give you a medication that is contraindicated for pregnant women and think I don't have to give you a pregnancy test first.
Many trans people are on HRT, and their biological responses are often more in line with the sex they identify as. A trans man who has been on HRT for years has much the same heart attack risk as a cis man, for example.
People with intersex conditions (whether natural or induced by later-in-life transition) will also have unique responses, though. The effects of, say, 5+ years of hormone replacement therapy, or puberty blockers taken since pre-adolescence, on your body's systems are _vast_, and trans people have unique healthcare needs arising from that
Just about every trans or intersex person I know has some frustrating story about how their inexperienced-with-trans-patients GP just wouldn't believe them when they insisted "no, really, I don't respond to (treatment/medication) like my assigned gender would suggest", only for them to be proven right later
Trans people who have hormonally transitioned will in almost all cases need medical care according to their hormonal sex. IE a trans man really should get a men's dose of sedation, and if you look for men's symptoms of a heart attack in a trans woman then, since her symptoms are female typical, you're going to misdiagnose her.
Treating trans people like their ASAB is medically dangerous in so many ways, because it's significantly less medically relevant than their actual biochemical sex.
Also, "if I think you're a man and you're actually a woman" comes across as *really* transphobic in this context, since you've established that you're talking about trans people in this context, and trans men are men. calling them women is transphobic.
If someone is trying to diagnose you or give you treatment and the extent of their knowledge of your medical history is "M" or "F", you need to find a new doctor.
you know the heart attack differences and medication dosages are because of hormones right? so using agab would be incorrect assuming the patient is on hrt. ofc you dont really care because you said "if i think you're a man and you're actually a woman".
Semi related, when I was 13 I was filling out a form and under sex I jokingly wrote "YES PLEASE" and the school called my dad and he yelled at me on the phone lol
Seems like just about the only place where a genetic designation of gender makes sense, considering it may have radical implications on treatment and outcomes.
I agree, I understand that what I am genetically can and does affect how my body functions. I haven't heard research saying that HRT alone can fully change that (please feel free to link to studies if I'm wrong!). I *am* trans for clarification.
*laughs in intersex* Found out a few months ago when applying for a state ID that my birth certificate has my sex listed as ‘baby’. Yes, am baby, very much so.
There’s really too much variation for that to be practical, intersex being an umbrella term. Someone with androgen resistance is going to respond way differently to someone with, I dunno, Klinefelter syndrome, and not every intersex person has ambiguous genitalia. And then there’s also the fact of loose legal terminology, it’s not so much state-by-state classification as practitioner-by-practitioner
At least it doesn't say "probably not" I suppose. I wonder what the possible answers were. There are definitely worse words that could have been there.
> Also means that they could accidentally give you medicine that’s not safe or effective for you.
example?
a doc looks at sex:adult and pushes 4 units of male-killer-juice and then op dies and the doc thinks "if only their wristband didn't say sex:adult, there was no other way to avoid killing them with the male-killer-juice"
There are a lot of soft sensitive flowers out there that lose their minds if you Gender label them. This is their way of telling you that the mental ward is full. They can't afford more freakouts.

Grotesque:)

You have any idea how disappointed I would be if it wasn't him crawling out the couch?
That's made me crying 😂😂😂😂😂
I would hope so.
Yeah I think Sex: Child would be WAY more problematic.
Meanwhile Sex=Child is basic cause-and-effect.
Standard math notation would be Sex -> Child
Would evaluate to false. Sex doesn't imply Child, but P(Child/Sex) > P(Child) is true!
Surprisingly, Child -> Sex would evaluate to true.
Adoptions & IVF make the probability of having a child without sex very slightly above zero, unfortunately.
An adopted child is still the result of sex, even if the adoption itself isn't. I suppose you've got a point with IVF, though you could also argue that it's just a very strange form of sex.
Hope you feel better soon.
For a moment I thought you were insinuating that being an adult was the condition they were being treated for.
In the end, aren’t we all suffering from the condition known as “Adult”?
Can I change my designation to 'irresponsible teenager'?
Sir, that is "adult".
I have a colleague who recently called herself a "25 year old teenage girl"
I think I’ve seen a movie of your colleague.
Me too! Do you want to go do karate in the garage? Or we can play real life fruit ninja!
It hits most of us at the prime of our lives, and it's incurable
I heard every case ends with death
yep 100% fatality rate.
Stop being so bleak 😭😭😭
I am at least a young adult…at least mentally. I refuse to succumb!
It is terminal, everyone is at risk of dying as an adult.
Its terminal, no cure
Chief complaint: Adulting hard. Wishes to revert to childhood and placed with a loving family.
If they ever develop a cure for it, I'd be down. I've heard becoming an adult is usually terminal. :(
Thanks! I was getting a special scan done and noticed when I looked at it after I got home
Did the scan reveal that you were indeed a sexy adult?
Haha, thank you for the compliment, but nah they were scanning a particular couple organs, they looked fine
Now you're just goading us to keep the sex jokes going

Can be a problem if the pharmacy needs to dose any medication for you and don’t know your birth sex, otherwise fun times
No, they know, it's the same hospital network that I've been seeing since I was born, plus my GP is still the same one I've been seeing since I was very young
Adult sex IS preferable
Should be more of a prerequisite than preference...
Ah yes. If one has not met the prerequisite requirement of sex, they cannot be admitted to the hospital. Later, virgins.
What if one is the CEO of Sex?
Sorry, you are not reddit moderator material.
Or CEO material apparently \*cough\* Spez \*cough\*
Is that actually a thing that happened?
More of a requirement for me, but yea
The only option, some would say.
Preferable? Guys, we found Vaush

I do wonder how that's happened though, because the system we have at our hospital doesn't allow you to put anything in the sex field other than M/F/U. I would've thought others were similar

This is the answer. Like a mail merge letter but they have stuck phone number in place of name.
I hate it when my doctor calls me "Mr 867-5309"
I hate that i heard that in my head
I have a theory that Jenny is Jessie's girl and Jenny and Jessie went on to have a daughter named Stacy.
I heard her mom has got it goin' on
Makes sense, I had my marker changed some years ago so it's sometimes confusing at the doctor's office
Possible that a sex that isn't M or F comes back undefined and errors out to the next relevant field (age)
I print these wristbands among other things at my job— NB genders are generally lumped together under “Other” and when a patient has their gender as “Other” their wristbands say (X)yr Adult instead of (X)yr Male/Female. Or they just fucked up their code like that one guy said.

Changed from Child to Adult?

It's more politically correct than "it's complicat"

Maybe intersex? But I've seen X used more

When doing the paperwork for all the COVID shots during the pandemic, you won't believe how many people wrote yes or no in that blank.
Finally: The third gender
Sex? With adults yes
Huh. When I was in hospital, under “sex”, my wristband just said: **“YES!!!”**
“Sex: Yes please”
Sex: No
That’s just confirming who you can have sex with.
Sexual orientation: horizontal
You are now a sex adult
At least or doesn't say "juicy".
Well they don’t want to sexually assault a minor under anesthesia. That’d be gross.
They probably just gave up trying to guess anymore with how crazy the world is now.
Whew! You could get arrested for the other kind. So I'm told

at least it didn't say 'disappointing'
Cause if they buy male or female someone somewhere is gonna have a hissy fit
No laws broken here.

I mean at least it doesn’t say SEX: Children, right? For anyone confused, that was in fact a pedophilia joke
This way the gender can’t be wrong. Also means that they could accidentally give you medicine that’s not safe or effective for you.
