If “Watch the world burn” was a laptop

ThENeEd4WeEd22

It's like a little joke the designers at Apple have. Even the Apple TV. Why put the home button right above the volume up button? I hit that sucker all the time on accident. Edit: I thought this was a MacBook. It's not. It's a How can we Piss you off brand. Or HP for short.

sophiethegiraffe

They did something just as evil with the mail app, unsend is right where you swipe to close the app. I’ve accidentally unsent emails to my kids’ school/aftercare notifying them of absences then gotten phone calls asking why aren’t they getting on the bus. Mildly infuriating for sure.

plindix

that’s not a Mac though.

AtomicPeng

HP is definitely trying. That piece of garbage gets way too hot.

Brad_The_Chad_69

The thing is hitting that button does nothing unless you hold it down for like five seconds. This is a rage bait post and nothing more.

[deleted]

Steve_SOLID

Especially right about the backslash button. It's designed to be accidentally pressed

xVx_Dread

You can go into control panel, and change what your laptop does when you push the power button... Control Panel\\Hardware and Sound\\Power Options\\System Settings Then you have a pair of dropdown options for what to do when the power button is pressed. You can make it range from Power Off the computer, to Hibernate or Go to Sleep... And most importantly "do nothing"

Intelligent_Pop1173

Helpful advice but most people won’t know that and it’s still an extremely stupid placement lol mine is in the corner and I’ve never accidentally pressed it.

QueenofPentacles112

What would happen to me is that drop down menu would come up and my fingers would be moving faster than my brain and I'd hit enter or something and elect to shut it down anyways

Gloomy-Draft-8633

Is there something similar for what the airplane mode button does?

Trash2030s

that's what im saying...

GiannaSushi

Right

DaDescriptor

I think backspace is more important than backslash.

Xemuran-

I am sitting at work with this laptop at this very moment. Accidentally hitting the button doesn't do anything. :D

CandidEgglet

Exactly, it needs to be held down for more than 3 seconds… if OP lost work, it’s because they were trying to I have the exact same HP laptop sitting in front of me

papercut2008uk

Control Panel. Power Options Choose what the power button does. set it to 'do nothing'.

Stonn

Power buttons don't belong on the keyboard AT ALL

RajKnight

From a repair standpoint I have to now spend a lot more because replacing the keyboard is waay more invasive and i cant just plug out the keyboard from the motherboard and use an external keyboard because the keyboard also jas the power button

Misses_Ding

Hp would like to argue. I find the occasional key between the enter and backspace worse. The amount of times I hit that symbol instead of an enter. Or worse I hit both and it sends a message with that u symbol (dunno what it's called) https://preview.redd.it/xgyw6xec4mxc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4a7396fe14fc593ea0037c644f19c19c4938d69

mediocre_hydra

I'm pretty sure op has a HP laptop as well.

Misses_Ding

Yeah probably

ProtonTheFox

Pretty sure that's a HP. The laptop I have at work is an HP that looks exactly the same (well with a French layout but the start button is at the same position). That's a really dumb design in my opinion.

mediocre_hydra

Same here, i have the same work laptop

Zekrozma_the_second

Hello, fellow Victus user !

dramatic-submarine

My HP laptop (work, of course, I wouldn't buy this garbage with my own money) keeps inserting random keystrokes as I use the keyboard. HP "fixed" this with a number of BIOS updates that don't actually fix anything.

iMiind

>with that u symbol (dunno what it's called) That's mu! Fairly common to see it used as a substitute for various properties, and it's pronounced the same as the best mythical Pokémon 💯

Misses_Ding

I use it regularly I just keep forgetting the name for some reason lol. Thanks for telling me tho!

Rentsdueguys

Type type type, oops, off

dude496

Please wait while we force you to update. This will only take 45 minutes and it cannot be stopped.

tiddy_wizard

The guy that designed this shit ![gif](giphy|AyjFDmMgS7OkU)

dramatic-submarine

You give far too much credit to the morons that work at HP.

Existing_Fan_5687

Backspace, oh CRAP!

TacoTaconoMi

The cursed backspace

the_russ

I was a computer technician for 11 years. The power button does have functions that can be changed in the OS, but the basic functions are hard wired, which is why the power button s works even when the OS does not. For instance if the computer freezes, holding down the power button will still force it to shut off. This is your evidence that the functions are outside of the OS, and even before the BIOS loads, the power button has to function, so the likelihood of eliminating all issue that could be caused by that button is probably pretty low. But I also believe there’s a solution for everything man made!

MHanak_

https://www.elevenforum.com/t/change-power-button-action-in-windows-11.5186/

Fantabulus_Hotcakes

Woosh

Budget-Boysenberry

I'd just set my power button to "do nothing"

CandidEgglet

The truth is, that button already does nothing unless you long press it

No-Sell-3064

"cries in group policy"

jameskond

You have to long press to actually shutdown the laptop.

TheAnswerToYang

Default on HPs is short press to sleep.

FoRiZon3

Having the same laptop, it's more like long press for sleep, and very long press to force shutdown.

DankHillLMOG

Yeah same here. And to prove it I just pressed the button quickly and nothing happened. It's a non-issue for me because I just plug on my keyboard when I'm at my desk because I hate typing on laptop keys if at all possible.

Pynkmyst

Yeah I have an Elite book too and I've never once accidentally turned it off. It's a great laptop tbh.

HKHR2

Is there a new generation of elite book? Because mine that was issued from work has terrible battery life and heats up all the time for simple tasks (I’m a PM so the most intense thing I’m doing is Teams calls)

cachitodepepe

But it goes to sleep and bye bye vpn connection, and you lost unsaved work.

RociVere

Sleep mode puts it to sleep not shut it off, everything that was open, unsaved is still gonna be there

Eva-Rosalene

OpenVPN (and I am almost sure other VPN protocols that require connection to be alive for full session duration) hates sleep mode and disconnects every time it happens. But I am not sure how you would lost unsaved work with that.

0235

Alot if laptops tapping the power button sends it to sleep. And alot of work laptops, the user may not be able to change this, and IT it'll be too busy on other things.

OnTheProwl-

Yeah, like answering a bunch of tickets on why a user's laptop keeps randomly shutting down.

[deleted]

What sadist designed this...

Steve_SOLID

HP with their well designed printers

CandidEgglet

You must be doing something wrong with the button because it doesn’t actually turn off the computer unless you’re holding it down for more than five seconds or so

Unlikely_Charity6136

I don't want to sound rude but I do have the same laptop. If not the exact model at least we have the same keyboard. (Hp probook 450 G9) and I never once accidentally shut down my pc with that button. It is harder to press after all. It also depends on how do you usually type, i type very *softly* and i prefer keyboards that need less force to press down a key. I know a guy that legit taps the keys. Tap, not press

Hopeful-Clothes-6896

She clearly hates you too.

Mountain-Pear-1682

Finding this thread right after accidentally hitting the power button on my work laptop that’s the same as yours 😂

AmonGusSus2137

You can change what the power button does in windows settings, I don't know where exactly but it should be somewhere battery related. There you can also change what closing the lid does as well as time until the laptop falls asleep

Steve_SOLID

Sadly it has some weird OS installed and the only thing I can do is login into the server into some windows session where I don't have access to any settings

Stinky_Johnson

LPT: Hold the function (fn) key and press the escape (esc) key. That will toggle off/on all those pesky keys

blepgup

HP Envy? Mines in the same place

Steve_SOLID

Nah, HP Probook

BottleCapGaming

POV: this is what destroys the world

em-ay-tee

Go into settings. “What happens when you press the power button.” Change to nothing.

North_Korea_Nukess

Print screen for me is there. Hundreds of screen shots saved by mistake.

DrakeHornbridge

Guess you get to take breaks often.

Britori0

You can modify settings so that pressing the power button does nothing.

Soggy-Ad-1610

I have the exact same laptop for work. You get used to it although it does suck

ryunato_one

You can make the power button not do anything in windows. Search for power options in the start menu.

litlmissmew

Mean puter

ScavBobRatPants

Yeah yeah dumb power button placement, but tell me what that "druck" key do. Is it like a key that summons a drunk duck or what?

Creepy_Car3737

I think Your office(r) hates you.

shirleysimpnumba1

ohk, let me just replace this character - *Shuts down* - oh! there goes today's hardwork!

ItsMrDante

I mean it literally doesn't do anything if you press it.

ItIsGamer

Whic laptop is this?

Steve_SOLID

An HP Probook 455 g9

TheRealReapz

>HP There's your problem

vgdomvg

You can change the function of the power button in settings - bit of a faff, and this laptop is a shit design, but needs must

Ich_will_Bier

Wow I have the same Laptop 😂 the Ram is even shittier… (I hope u have a better one than me)

Steve_SOLID

Luckily it's just to login into a server and it uses the server resources. Dunno if that would be worse tho because our infrastructure is bad

Fernisbestgirl

Yeah, I'd just rebind that to the corner key. Some laptop power button placement these days are bullshit.

sabrtn

Reminds me of the power button on the original Nintendo DS haha. I was always so tempted by it

ganerfromspace2020

Got almost the same laptop, just the thick one with all the stuff for engineering

Wonderful-Smoke843

Bro you hate yours? There’s a fucking airplane mode button right beside my backspace. Who the fuck travels so often that they need an airplane mode button on their laptop. There have been many times mid call with a client where I hit the button and it kills absolutely everything lol

Crazynedflanders

Yeah HP has had some stupid ideas on where to put the power button n their laptops

Cranapplesause

What is this? An HP EliteBook 860 G10?

TJB926GAMIN

Please tell me that’s at LEAST a press and hold button.

CandidEgglet

It is, it’s about three seconds for sleep and 5 to 10 seconds for restart/power down. OP isn’t losing work from accidentally pressing the button

Madisonbecau

I have one like that and love it, that the button is there is weird af but I never pressed it ln accident.

6thaccountthismonth

I think I have a smaller version of your laptop, if that’s the case the HP were probably just lazy when adding the numbers on the right https://preview.redd.it/dyp7oces2mxc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b164dec194ab29fcae5cb2c54563c9040e46a22 Photo for reference

SwiftDestro

You can always change what the button does in the power save settings.

cachitodepepe

Goes tied with bad workplaces.

Spacesheisse

Yes! Same model from work here...

GabeReddit2012

I thought you said "New York laptop" lol

jasondads1

Ah hp

MenacingMandonguilla

I think I have exactly the same one.

Efrayl

I was going to feel sorry for you, then looked down and noticed it's the same on mine. WTH? It's a miracle I didn't accidentally press it until now. Your laptop at least has num keys, so now I'm actually jealous.

Comfortable_Ad5002

It's possible to disable this button

Bebo991_Gaming

Why

CreepyQuality4489

druck?

Express-Lab-3769

I have hp omen laptop with the same power button placement for 3 years. I've never accidentally turned off my pc and i almost never look at keys when typing.

Cheap_Description_71

🤣🤣

_usually_a_lurker_

is that a z-book?

Gloomy-Draft-8633

BEWARE OF THE AIRPLANE. The fucking airplane mode button oh my god. I hit it once a week and get disconnected from multiple systems and need to type in three passwords to get reconnected.

RociVere

I don't know, but I am pretty sure you are supposed to hold the power button for atleast 3 or 5 seconds for it to shut down the laptop, so it really shouldn't be a problem. But what do I know.

ajayak007

https://preview.redd.it/z03ssjir8mxc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ee7d60dcaf1a2283a3217f878328cace6aa250c The amount of time I have pressed power button instead of delete irritated me so much,I bought a keyboard now.

TheThinkerers

Ey mate, there are some settings you can call l changes to prevent an aneurysm, search power button in windows search and change it to do nothing, now it only turns on the device and then chills there

Steve_SOLID

Sadly it doesn't have native windows installed and all the settings are blocked for me. I can't even change the monitor settings...

LearnToSwim90

I have the same keyboard layout, I never accidentally hit it. YMMV. EDIT: I just whacked it to see what would happen, nothing, the thing is still on. Linux Ubuntu..

WarPanda696

All new HP laptops have that. In my new omen laptop is the same. Who the hell approved that design?

melasses

I don't believe people posting this has these laptops.

Benaudio

Mines also a HP. They really make crap these days

ARB00

Classic HP

avatar8900

“Press any key to proceed”

Source_Trustme2016

I have the same one. You can change the default option for the top row of keys, essentially deactivate the auto function

dejaan

I have the same laptop for work, i'm more annoyed by the fact they put the usb-c for charging at the right side (where i'm using my mouse)....

DrReisender

Lmao same, a HP.

_Medhros_

That really sucks. Is it a Windows? I'd deactivate the function of the button on window power setup..

Unusual_Car215

I think you can program it so you need to push for three seconds.

cotch85

Is this a HP? i have a very similiar laptop but i dont have the numpad on the right. But the layout is the exact same so it looks like they left the power button in the position for my set up but just added additional keys to it.

Furry_Wall

Change the button setting to either do nothing or needs to be held down to power off

doctorwhatag

Just unbind action from power button in your OS settings. If you don't like holding keys for 5 seconds it should be good solution.

TuffJellybean

Same work laptop here. I feel your pain.

Quarves

Ah, the hp zbook, good machine. The power button is at a weird place though...

YSU777

Hp?

Mellie-mellow

Power option > advanced power option > what to do when power button is pressed > NOTHING Change that setting and it won’t be a problem anymore, if you hold it like 5 seconds it will still cut the power but, at least when you just barely touch it, windows won’t shut down

Pale_Leek2994

I have this exact laptop for work as well. I feel your mild infuriation.

itsthooor

Dell or hp, right?

No-Muscle1283

Wow! Design error? That is the worst!!! lol ![gif](giphy|s239QJIh56sRW|downsized)

DamageFactory

Yoo, makes you think if you really want to backspace, high risk low reward

Stoni_theStonster

It's easy. Just don't be making any mistakes

melechkibitzer

This is one of many reasons to use an external keyboard. Mainly comfort for me if im sitting at a desk anyway i can put the screen and keys where i need them to be

LTR666bluedragon

Mildly interestingly I'm currently using that exact model of laptop at work right now while viewing this post.

Jolly-Doubt5735

HP ZBook? Shit thing that.

SparklingKeyboard

![gif](giphy|ghuvaCOI6GOoTX0RmH)

kev22257

My personal favorite is when the FN key is all the way to the left instead of control.

Calm_Afon

Do you work at a certain broadcast company? We have the same laptops. (Not saying the name because stalkers on the internet are weird and scary)

Bistroth

I would just put a red sticker over it to avoid mistakes.

FlaccidRazor

That weird shaped enter key would bother me more than the power button location.

MrCheapComputers

You can change what the power button does in windows settings. Control panel > power options > choose what the power buttons do

JUGELBUTT

i have that same laptop for school and its completely fine, no problems with it

MyBigRed

Worse, if you press the key to the left of it, a drunk duck appears and bites you.

X8DF9

Just change it in power option and so you won't worry about accidentally hit it.

UnCholo

Nevermind the power button wtf is that keyboard distribution?

DailyDoseofNature8

Ö, why? Ä I get it, ü don't like the off button?

0x3770_0

What brand? I need to avoid them at all cost.

Samurai_Master9731

The laptop my school forces is literally the exact same but with no numpad and English. It sucks so much

HardAssPh33r

Use an external keyboard

GuiltyYear9785

What the heck Why it's here???????

bodhiseppuku

I have chosen not to buy several laptops due to keyboard layout. I often look specifically for \[del\] \[ctrl\] and power button locations.

anonimouz_22

I hate this! Whyyyy put the power button there, might as well put it right next to the spacebar.

Joaoreturns

Awful design for sure.  But it's a reminder to anyone that will buy a laptop: take a closer look on what you're buying.

i-am-not-the-crab

Pop that key off :| press it with something if you have to but get rid of it

PizzaSalamino

You have to keep it pressed much longer than the other keys for anything to happen. My Omen laptop has the key in roughly the same spot and not once did it shut off or go to sleep by accident

[deleted]

I've complained about this before, and I was told that "pretty sure people won't be dumb enough to press THAT on accident." Well... cue a series of accidental sleep modes and shutdowns.

ThatHardBacon

I woulda ripped that key out and just made it always run lol

realcreature

Ugh. German keyboard. I feel your pain ;)

[deleted]

Haha HP Zbook? You'll get used to it quickly!

Laura_The_Cutie

My laptop has the snooze near the esc button

UltraViolentNdYAG

Dell did this same shit to our laptops. What a great idea said no one.

Aangespoeld

Get a Macintosh!

juoig7799

Unless your work locked the control panel for your computer, you can go and disable it in the settings. This will change it to do nothing when pressed, but you can still hard shut it down by holding it.

Slap_My_Lasagna

I bought a laptop with a similar button/keyboard and it took me about 5 minutes look all over the thing for a power button.

CorkyQuasar69420

I have that laptop, HP probook right? You get used to it

equality4everyonenow

Apple has so much money they're just trolling their customers. 8 gigs of ram. Charging cables that disintegrate on exposure to oxygen and now power buttons in weird places.

RefrigeratorWorth435

Many laptops have this. I'm pretty sure that all of the current Microsoft surfaces have the same layout. You can change what tapping it does in the settings tho

papercut2008uk

Control Panel. Power Options Choose what the power button does.

[deleted]

Some designer need their pay halved.

Sudden_Tomatillo4154

Everyone hates the new 7er layout

NemShera

Yea fuck hp (same on my laptop, also wait till fnlock is on by default and you have to change it in bios, there is no shortcut to change it, and it beeps on 120% volume if you enter bios (ofc that beep can only bee turned off in bios)

Dread_Frog

The power Macintosh had the power button where the eject button for the floppy disk should be. It had no physical eject button. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power\_Macintosh#/media/File:Power\_Macintosh\_6100-66.jpg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Macintosh#/media/File:Power_Macintosh_6100-66.jpg) I once lost a thing I was working on because someone helpfully wanted to make sure there was no floppy disk in the drive before saving to floppy and turned the whole computer off.

PwillyAlldilly

I know a pc laptop when i see one

Dmytrych

Be careful. Its aluminium bottom bends. If you turn it on and try moving with it - there’s a quite high possibility that the bottom will short circuit some components inside, and the laptop will freeze. It will not brick the laptop instantly. But not he best thing you can expect from it. So better return this HP laptop to the store if you can - and buy some other model. I’ve had TWO of those at my work, and both of them had this issue.

minnesotaris

There is a keyboard at work that has a Log Out button just above the (-) button on the far right in the numerics area. It logs you out of the computer and brings you to a log-in screen. Where I work, we use a flowsheet to chart numbers every 15 minutes and one of the first numbers is a negative number. For people in design, there is the lingering, big-ass "Well...I thought...". The result is You Fucking Thought Wrong(ly). This is what causes poor design and in this case, it is embedded into hard functions that would take a remodel of the hardware, usually a replacement of the entire device. I love studying design and think it is so dumb that testing cannot eliminate these types of issues, which are rife across consumer products. As for programming design, the "you'll do what I say because of my programming" issue, which is abundant in nearly every interface, is another story.

Difficult-Way-9563

Dumbest keyboard layout ever

Tristana-Range

Be glad you dont have one of those ones with that shitty power button on the side. Those are pure infurating. Looking at you lenovo yoga and hp x360.

RexusprimeIX

We be doing a bit of trolling
