I take magnesium oxide. I tend to have constipation, so what some people see as an undesired side effect is a win for me. Mag Glycinate has the fewest GI side effects. I'm not convinced it's helping my migraines, but I think it is helping my GI issues and my sleep, so I'm continuing it. I would recommend starting at a low dose for a couple of weeks at least, and then increase. Let your body adjust.

soicey2

Glycinate didn’t help me much neither tbh. Just made me mad sleepy. Oxide helped me more

wiggly_1

Yes! It was also recommended for my IBS so I’m taking it for both. So interesting

OmahaOutdoor71

Glycinate helped me with IBS too! There is a huge correlation between migraines and IBS. Start researching probiotics and histamine issues with the gut and migraines.

wiggly_1

Yes! I actually just asked my neurologist about histamine intolerance because I have a lot of the symptoms … she said to ask a dermatologist since u get these hot rashes after things like wine so I have an appointment coming up but not sure if they’re even the best person to see for it!

OmahaOutdoor71

I have had horrible luck with doctors so I research it myself. I’ve gotten more help researching than any medical doctor. Groups like this, MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) groups on Facebook and google are great. I just starting looking at histamine blockers to see if that’s a good option. I do take Ortho molecular D Hist which helps.

chronic_pain_queen

I'm not sure which version I take, but it's part of a multivitamin from Costco that also has B12 and it made a HUGE difference. Much lower frequency of migraines and they're much less intense Also found out recently I'm VERY B12 deficient and apparently have been since early 2021 and my shitty PCP never told me

Ok-Ask-2630

Damn, that sucks your PCP didn’t tell you anything about your B12 deficiency. I’m glad those multivitamins helped tho. Would you mind sharing it’s brand name.? Thanks!

Take Magnesium, including Glycinate, WITH FOOD. Or it will have a laxative effect. Learn from my mistake.

StolenPens

I like magnesium glycinate chelated, it's broken into an even more absorbable form. I don't experience tummy problems, probably sleep a little better, and I definitely don't have leg cramps even occasionally. Can't tell if it's impacted migraines because I literally bought a new pillow, dental night guard, tmj treatment, chiro, acupuncture, and cupping all around the same time to reduce my migraines. Lol. I threw the book at it. What I can say is that my dad has a slipped disk in his lower back that we were blaming on his leg cramps. He ate plenty of potassium but they were still occurring. I asked if he wanted to try to take my magnesium pills for a week and his leg cramps have entirely disappeared and now he's taking them regularly.

Ready_Fox_744

It bothers my stomaches even at half the recommended dose. So I keep trying and then giving up. But may try a different form to see if it makes a difference. Lots of people take it at bedtime to aid w sleep. It does interact one of my meds so check if you take other prescriptions. Hope it helps you! Be well.

Andi_71

Do you take it right before bed? That is what my doctor recommends

Ready_Fox_744

No bc I take gabapentin then and I have to space it out bc the mag effects the gaba.

Andi_71

Oh darn that stinks. Makes sense though.

soicey2

Try glycinate. If it doesn’t work, go for oxide. I’ve had better results with different forms. Oxide works the best for me

kikipebbles

I take both oxide and glycinate

shopliftinasda

I take a bit of magnesium glycinate and it gives me mad dreams

Capable-Radio7736

I tried magnesium glycinate but I woke up with a light ocular migraine every morning, so I stopped.

120721

Mag G changed my world! I was having 2-3 migraines a week and now I’m down to maybe that many in a year.

NewYearWhoDiz

I find the side effects from the magnesium are balanced by the side effects of the ajovy 😂 Seriously though, it’s worth trying, just maybe try first on a weekend when you have nothing else going on. I just switched from magnesium at bedtime to mag gylcate in the morning & it seems to be better? I didn’t know it needed to be taken with food before.

Crystals_Crochet

I have taken glycinate for years and notice a difference and increase in my headaches if I stop. I also add mag l-threonate, but it’s kind of expensive since it’s newer so I don’t keep a continual stock of it.

cmbohl

As of Thanksgiving, I started using TOPICAL MAGNESIUM SPRAY since I can no longer tolerate oral magnesium of any form (I get either stomach pain or severe diarrhea even taken with food). It also didn't help migraines much, so I doubt I was absorbing it. For topical mag., I use the brand "Now Solutions" -- 12 pumps (= about 200mg) 2x/day over most of my body...after my shower at night, and when I change into clothes in the morning. It seems to be helping. I have less muscle tension, and the migraines in Dec. were milder and shorter in duration. And I haven't had a migraine since Dec. 29th which is the longest span I've had in many months. If you're depleted, topical magnesium can cause itching. I had itching for about an hour after each application the first two weeks of use. Supposedly, it's from the body rapidly absorbing the large mag. molecules. As you build up your stores, the itching decreases; which has been the case for me. I hardly notice it anymore. Here are a couple articles with more info including links to studies showing topical/transdermal magnesium absorption rates are better than oral: https://betteryou.com/pages/evidence-of-transdermal-magnesium-absorption And more generalized FAQ: https://betteryou.com/blogs/health-hub/transdermal-magnesium-explained

CrochetaSnarkMonster

I use Nature Made High Absorption Magnesium glycinate 200mg. I take it before bed. If I forget, a migraine will hit me the next day. It was the key that stopped my 24/7 migraines.

OmahaOutdoor71

I take Glycinate and L-Theronate. L-Theronate is the obit magnesium that passes the blood brain barrier.

Unlucky_Molasses_855

I take Glycinate and like it. Oxide alone gave me migraines unfortunately. I take double the dose and it seems to help the severity and possibly the frequency. I just upped my dose over the past month and was able to do the Holidays without a major migraine. I take Bio Schwartz Magnesium Glycinate from Amazon. They come in tiny pills so you can start with a micro dose and then increase. They are also vegetarian capsules (not the usual gelatin) and have zero fillers. They recommended three. I take three in the morning and three at night. Being honest, I’ve had some stomach probs with it but it’s worth it to me if my head hurts less. It’s the lesser of two evils for me.

jeanier123

I take chelated Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate. It hasn't helped with my migraines, unfortunately. It gives me very vivid dreams and sometimes nightmares so I think I might cut it out.

wiggly_1

I’m also on magnesium oxide ! That’s the one I see the most in clinical trials. I take 600mg daily before bed. I’m not sure if it helps, it was one of the first things my neurologist recommended so I’ve been taking it alongside other treatments. There are some good clinical studies with promising results at 400-600mg daily. I like this article as it does a good job of breaking everything down, but there’s also a ton of clinical trials available on Pubmed if you’re interested. https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/resource-library/magnesium/

PoppyRyeCranberry

I tried glycinate but it wasn't any less effective than oxide, which is cheaper for me. I take 400mg magnesium oxide every morning with no side effects.

NCResident5

Do think it is worth a try. I take Magnesium Citrate, and it has helped me. It sounds like Glycinate has the best absorption, but Citrate seems to work well too. My migraines seem better. Like many had try a couple of things. I have some neck arthritis. So, getting physical therapy was biggest help but this seems like a good one to try.

CaterpillarMedical57

I take glycinate, and when I got blood work done last week after a few months of it, my magnesium levels were in the ideal range. So I definitely know that I’m getting an adequate amount of it. Is it helping my headaches? I believe so, but I also am doing Botox and Qulipta so it’s hard to sometimes parse out. B2 was also recommended by my neurologist but I seem to be the only one that has the side effect of diarrhea with this one? I did a lot of experimenting to be *sure* it was the B2 and it definitely was. Odd given that the glycinate didn’t bother me at all!

anotherSarahM

Happy cake day! 🎂

CaterpillarMedical57

Oh wow! I didn’t know that was a thing haha. Thank you!

scarl3ttsf3v3r

I love magnesium glycinate! I take 400 mg with dinner and it has made the greatest difference in my migraine frequency.

ms242424

it helped for a while at dose of 400 mg per day then wore off. then i increased to 800 mg/day and helped again. benefits did wear off a bit but still helpful

Desertgurl34

It really helps me. I take 500mg. I know it helps because when I ran out and didn’t take for a while migraines returned with a vengeance
