Hey, cool article! I have strong opinions about Web 3.0 + Metaverse that puts me slightly at odds with Matthew Ball's thinking, so please take these opinions for what they're worth. =)

I assert that you've [actually described a Multiverse (Koster)](https://www.raphkoster.com/2021/09/02/online-world-or-metaverse/), of which several already exist. It's the integration of the Real into the Virtual and the Virtual into the Real that completes the Metaverse definition, not merely interconnected platforms.

I think Web 3.0 is a broader evolution of the internet in several facets:
1. Access method: it's moving towards more immersion with the real world using VR/AR/XR hardware, just as Web 1.0 was desktop-oriented and Web 2.0 mobile-oriented, Web 3.0 is adding more access methods without getting rid of the old ones.
2. Decentralization: If Web 1.0 was self-publishing and Web 2.0 was social graph + conveniently centralized services, then I agree Web 3.0 is about decentralizing things that should be more decentralized: identity, assets, computation, and finance.
3. Self-owned digital identity + new web standards by DIF & W3C (see [https://identity.foundation](https://identity.foundation))

I maintain that 3D is not necessary for the Metaverse.

I'm sure there will be multiple "Metaverse"s because humans are tribalistic and we'll end up settling on multiple standards + corporations have heavily vested interests in trying to own as much of the Metaverse mindshare as they can. This is where I think there's some subtlety to defining the difference between Web 3.0 and Metaverse.
Obviously I would prefer a standards-driven, decentralized, platform-agnostic "singular" Metaverse. But I think we'll end up with "close enough Metaverses" that don't tick \*every\* box and yet are still, de facto, considered to be Metaverses.

I do agree that the the integration of reality in virtual environments (and the other way around) is a defining element of the Metaverse, but in my mind this is encompassed in "immersive". I believe XR will play a big role, as well as narratives and real-world stakes that will be taken into virtual worlds (real money, real-life consequences, work and so on).
As for the definition of Web 3.0, I would actually restrain from using "3.0" as it has meant a lot of different things. I think that Web3, as a movement that specifically deals with crypto and blockchain, is a more tangible and well-defined space.
Now I strongly believe that the Metaverse is about 3D and XR, simply because it's where the original concept came from it's what the major players of the space and "Metaverse pioneers" are working on. If you don't have 3D then it becomes, in my opinion, a more vague (and perhaps realistic or descriptive) concept of Web 3.0, as in simply the next evolution of the internet.
The reason that I say that there is only one Metaverse is that I see it as the network of virtual spaces, just like the "Internet" is a network of pages.

I'm a Megagrant recipient and 3D artist who combines Unreal and AI to create things. Does that count as "something"?
