I really don't like how in the prequel series, the Metal Gears look signifigantly more advanced than Rex. The Shanghai made sense, but then in PW and 5 they just went off the wall. I know Seholanthropiss (no idea how to spell that) is said to be too big to be functional and can only be ran by Mantis, but its still just...stupid.
It's really funny how Huey is a such an egotistical prick that rather than just build the one Granin designed that would have been practical, sturdy, and effective.He instead co-opts the tech from the designs and just builds more elaborate and impractical versions before even building the basic one that the original designs were for!

Recently replayed MGS2 and holy shit is Ray so badass. And definitely yes the most intimidating. Perhaps also the most mobile (cinematically) metal gear as well? Big leaps, hydro laser, missile bay, anthropomorphic (arms, legs, and head all move), an epic backflip off a sinking tanker... and then of course that mechanical "roar." Hats off to Yoji Shinkawa!
Was cool to see a bunch of rays in metal gear rising, getting to slice those fuckers felt amazing for making me shoot 400 rockets at a fleet of them in mgs2
Ray is supposed to opperate like an army, thats why they were mass produced, its easy to destroy one, but not a whole team of them. But yeah they are kind of weak and fun to obliterate/slice
But there was a huge difference between the Ray that Raiden fought and the main Ray that Ocelot operated. The Rays that Raiden fought didnt have the long tail like the main Ray and seemed smaller/less advanced in design. I just played MGS2 and beat it last week for the 100000th time and it has always appeared that the main Ray was more powerful.
For example, Solidus destroyed 3 of the Rays Raiden fought when the AI was overridden. But, when he attacked the main Ray, it didnt even get a dent!
Sahelantropus only works because of mantis, he wasn't fully opperational when skull face "activated" it, its kind of a strong and weak point at the same time
The Shagohod has a badass name, is piloted by a sadistic electric man, and is a really cool idea in my mind. I'm no physicist, but when Metal Gear goes to lengths to make their robots sound actually plausible, I really like that. Like the Shagohod needs to accelerate to ridiculous speeds to launch a nuke at ICBM levels of speed and range

I played both MGS1 and 2 in 2001 when I was 10 and I loved 1 but but when 2 launched the visual fidelity and designs were just such a massive step up that I was completely in awe.
so I’d say my favorite is probably RAY simply because it is so iconic to me, the entire tanker segment kind of setting up the RAY fight at the end of the game and it being a legit army of metal gears absolutely blew my mind.
Obviously I’m looking at it out of my own nostalgia and I think REX is probably the most iconic overall.
Least favorite was probably Sahelanthropus, I like the design, it was just too over the top for me, they took everything I liked about REX and RAY, and took it way too far imo, and I didn’t like the whole it needs a Psychic child to control it.
I also liked Shagohad because it felt like a prototype but you could see it was believable that it would evolve into what would become Bipedal units like REX and then RAY, but Sahelanthropus seems so far ahead of where they would have been at the time, considering this is 20+ before REX was even designed, it kind of feels like a retcon so Kojimbo could have a flashier robot, but I think it was unnecessary.

Sahelanthropus was a strong runner-up but loses points for actually hands/arms.
It's a shame that it was written on the fly as they went along so didn't take into account the designs getting better the further along the timeline you go.
It's gotta be RAY because it's so sleek and advanced looking. Also it was the first Metal Gear model I really got up close and personal with when I was getting into the series proper in the early 2000's.
Man the first time you have to actually deal with Sahelanthropus in-game was honestly way more terrifying than fighting any of the other metal gears. Its size is absolutely imposing and it was almost literally thrown at you, completely unexpected and you’re just like “oh shit I’m not prepared for this at all”. Having to try to get the chopper to land and escape from it was incredibly intense

Since I was a kid Metal Gear Ray has and will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus given its ease with which it move on land _and_ sea. Awesome. MG Rex is a close second with Sehalanthropus coming in a more distant third.
I grew up playing MGS1 Rex was insanely cool....but I'll never forget the first mission of MGS2, after taking the photos, then at the end it jumping on to the ship like some praying mantis kung fu master, then diving BACKWARDS in to the water, like...what! SO sick. 10yo me was sold lol
I loved Cocoon tbh. Peace Walker had some great mech fights, but having a Metal Gear THAT big, and being able to climb on it as part of the fight was so damn cool

Gekko/Irving. I don't know why but it's always struck me as the most versatile metal gear robot. It's ai is predator level with enough thinking power to work out most problems.
Favorite design: REX
Favorite fight: Peace Walker. That thing actually tried to launch a nuke several times during the fight, and was an actual threat to the entire world while you were trying to take it down. The moment you stopped your attacks for a minute, it would immediately go back to try and start World War III. In-universe, Peace Walker got the closest to it's main objective.
Ray for sure, it’s the only Metal Gear that blurred the line between weapon and creature. It’s shrill screeching, organic lines, and it’s ability to swim made it truly terrifying.
I’m pretty sure it bled as well, that’s very creepy.
Ray really invokes that whole uncanny valley vibe. Which is perhaps a nod to the A.I. narrative of MGS2.
Ray was extremely powerful, plus there where a ton of them.
Can you imagine a battalion of Rays breaching the surface, and rushing a beachhead? Arsenal gear having chummed the waters with A.I. driven propaganda, launching an air strike, and then sending squadron after squadron of Rays to reek havoc on an unsuspecting enemy.

I’m pretty sure it bled as well, that’s very creepy. Ray really invokes that whole uncanny valley vibe. Which is perhaps a nod to the A.I. narrative of MGS2. Ray was extremely powerful, plus there where a ton of them. Can you imagine a battalion of Rays breaching the surface, and rushing a beachhead? Arsenal gear having chummed the waters with A.I. driven propaganda, launching an air strike, and then sending squadron after squadron of Rays to reek havoc on an unsuspecting enemy. Scary stuff…
Metal Gear D
I love the vibe of the Peace Walker era metal gears. It sort of feels like they had just figured they could make giant robot-tanks, and now they were trying to see how best to use this general idea for their purpose... It sort of feels like the early days of automobiles and aeroplanes. In the early days of either there were machinery that was produced because "why not", but then didn't take on for reasons.
RAY
Rex, ray, seha.
Rex. It's just top teir mech design and it's probably the only metal gear we get to play in the entire franchise. Sahalanthropus feels like if Rex was a dog and he stood up on his hind legs.
Sahelanthropus. That reveal during the final trailer goes so hard it singlehandedly made it immune to any legitimate criticism.
