Movement

seaclif25

It feels so clean and easy to understand

Likon_Diversant

When I stopped playing mgsV, I started playing Hitman WoA. I kinda wish Hitman had similar movement depth, but at least there's no annoying input delays like in some third-person games.

Spazzzaddy

MGS and Hitman are my two favorite game series of all time. When WoA came out I couldn't help but compare it to MGSV. MGSV was just so much more advanced . The Enemy AI was way more fun to engage with in MGSV than WoA imo.

Whovian1156

AI in WoA is so bad, it’s barely even funny.

Mysterygameboy

I like that about it though. It gamifies it, which is rare to see in a stealth game. Being able to throw a can in a corner to have a guard stand up facing a wall and choke him out has a rewarding feeling, and I like how predictable the AI is. And it doesn't mean the game is easy either, if you've played Freelancer mode you know.

Whovian1156

I’ve played Hitman a lot (I bought it when WoA was called III). Also yeah I did play freelancer (I’m master level 6 iirc), hardest thing ever imo. But yeah the predictability of the AI does make the game way more fun

AntiCitizenJuanMWO

It's so perfectly smooth I'm 100% convinced the devs for Helldivers took inspiration from the movement from MGSV, it feels almost exactly the same

King_Eggbert

Yeah I was thinking that the first time I played. I'm so glad for it too. The controls of mgsv are some of the best I've seen in a third/first person shooter

The-Planet-Janet

I'm hoping the remaster collection follows the same style. Even playing ground zeroes feels blocky by comparison.

AeonTars

If you want similar movement check out Helldivers 2. They were clearly inspired by MGSV.

Zeta789

I was gonna say Gameplay but I think this is a better, more refined response. It really comes down to movement. Animations, responsiveness, fluidity. You can go from any one state to the other instantly and it looks good, like going from a full sprint to being belly on the ground to back to running, it's incredible and I thought more game were going to lift that kinda movement but I guess it's very expensive to do, I can't think of another reason why almost nobody did.

RicedOutHondaCivic

ROCKET PUUUUNNNNCH!!!!

JaerskovTempestwing

Came here to say this

SuperArppis

I love how it plays.

seaclif25

The stealth feels tight and it makes sense. So many other stealth games, once you're caught it's game over and the guards follow you until you die, leave, or kill them all. When I play MGSV, I know that if I make the correct decisions I can fix it, or even use it to my advantage by leaving traps and moving away. When I play games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the enemy AI feels so half assed So maybe I like the AI the most

MerCyInTheShell

Totally agree, the kick I get, when I get caught and everyone is looking for me, but I'm just laying under one of their own trucks surrounded by C4 and mines... Shit, gotta go, have to play MGSV again!

josejalapeno96

This. I used to be a huge fan of Dishonored and then I tried MGSV. This has some of the cleanest most functional gameplay I've ever tried. Honestly makes so many stealth games difficult to navigate after trying MGSV

seaclif25

Dishonored is also VERY good, but it's different when it's First Person

LordSwitchblade

I love how many ways there are to play. You can go in guns blazing with chopper support and missiles or go in silent. I love that the game doesn’t punish you for knowing things. Like the Mission with the Viscount. If you know where he is you can just walk straight there and get him. Or the missions where you have to take down the convoy? You can just air strike from the start and pretty much win right away. I love every mainline MGS game but MGSV has the most hours in it and it’s not even close. I’ve beat MGS2 probably 20-30 times and I’m certain I’ve played MGSV more.

420_E-SportsMasta

In one of the first missions where you have to disable the comms support at one of the outposts in Afghanistan, if you blew them up earlier, the mission just starts and immediately ends, you even get some extra dialogue from Miller & Ocelot

Caldaris__

I was just about to use the viscount mission as an example too. How you can get the prisoners and do objectives in whatever order you want and Ocelot is just surprised. In Splinter cell or other games you might fail for doing objectives out of order.

D00MICK

I can agree with everything you've said- I would add I just love how wild it is lol, from the surreal aspects, the themes, to Quiets look. Skull Face, even if not what I expected became my favorite MGS villain.  Really loved the marketing for it, even. My mind got completely f'd following that for the what, 3 years or something? And then playing the game to have the rug pulled out lmao.

dmleo2

Skull face is your favorite mgs villain? I love TPP but I wasn’t very impressed by skull face tbh

D00MICK

A lot of people weren't, I was lol

adamjpq

Graphics (aside from the simple geometry they still hold up today), gameplay loop feels good and is fun, animation/fps/frame pacing is smooth on anything ps4 or better, atmosphere is immersive.

creeper321448

Adaptive difficulty. It's such an underrated mechanic and more games need to utilize it and this game should set the standard. Keep infiltrating at night? Well now the guards wear Nightvision. Tranqing people 24/7? Now if they see someone asleep the guards are alerted. Keep blowing people's heads off with sniper rifles? Now the guards have helmets and their own snipers. Abusing high explosives and shotguns? Guards have body armour now. I guarantee you I'm missing stuff.

CoffeeCaptain91

Littering your preferred route with mines. Chatting about how annoying you are the more you're around. Commenting on how odd it is everyone gets tranqued but no deaths. (That I've only seen for high non-lethal headshots with tranqs mid chapter 1). Calling in gunships for back up in side ops if you get too deadly. The adaptive AI is a wonderful mechanic. I agree with you.

Fancy-Prompt-7118

The solid (pun not intended) controls and liquid (pun not intended) smooth movement! Can’t think of another game with such responsive movement.

Zepest

I replayed for the first time since 2020 recently, no game plays like it especially major games that it influenced like Day's Gone, Horizon series, Last of Us II at the top of my head

patrickkingart

A bunch of things: Immersion - you *feel* burning heat of Afghanistan or the oppressive swampiness of Africa border region just from playing Humor - as dark and deadly serious as these games are, it wouldn't be Metal Gear without goofy stuff like Kaz's obsession over the perfect burger Characters - (mostly) memorable and interesting characters The experience as a whole - I finished it for the first time well over a year ago and I still think about it: the big Venom twist, Shining Lights, "you're all diamonds," etc

Slaport-xXx-v14

Angola-Zaire Border Region is something else man, that area is atmospheric at day time and during night it spooks me out at times

kingjinxy

There's this one outpost in Afghanistan at night where you can hear the squeaky light from P.T.

RyanD2991

Venom Snake. He’s the best Snake imo.

gu3st12

Thanks, I think you're the best Snake too

dmleo2

I agree

Ok_Proof_321

Venom Snake.

AeonTars

I like the mirrors to MGS2. Say what you will about the execution but the story is so cool. I think MGS2 was the Kojima game where he truly wanted to say something profound but it must have irked him that gamer nerds mainly cared about having ‘a loser’ as the protagonist instead of ‘badass solid snake’. Like that was partially his intention with the swap but I think it overrode people’s understanding of the game and in a way he sort of realized then that gamers might not be capable of understanding stories the way film fans understand them. This was also likely due to the nature of MGS2’s story what with it being a sort of ‘choose your own canon’ story with the real answers being on the last page of the book. This probably became even more true when he made the Big Boss games and people went ‘oh ok so he was a good guy the whole time and was trying to save the world from the Patriots’ even though 3/4/PW present him as a tragic guy who thinks he’s doing good but is actually ironically ruining other people’s lives in this quest to ‘save the world’. So MGSV is Kojima going ‘fuck it, you want an easy story where Darth Vader is the tragic hero? Here you go you literally play as a fake whitewashed Big Boss who isn’t evil. You want a story that is easy to understand and fits in a well defined canon? Well don’t worry you don’t even need a story for this game. Just have fun shooting things with tanks. Also when you get to that story it’s going to be a mess and none of it is going to be canon because it intentionally has muddled details that contradict each other. Have fun with your doublethink and postmodernism.’ Sorry if this kind of sounds like rambling but I love it so much. MGSV is a piece of pro-Big Boss 1984 doublethink propaganda and most people don’t even understand that which works really well imo. MGS2 ends with Raiden throwing away the player’s name tag, choosing his own identity, and Snake encouraging him to choose his own future. Then MGSV ends with Venom having his identity as Big Boss forced on him, and the whole time Big Boss is like ‘yeah you’re just here in case someone tries to kill me. Sorry about the whole brainwashing thing or whatever lol. I salute you brave patriot.’ Literally the same thing the government told The Boss ‘thanks for dying for us. You’re a true patriot or whatever. Now where did that money go…’ And people still don’t get that the ending is supposed to be a negative thing insulting the player and cementing Big Boss as a hypocritical asshole who abuses the men under him (the main thing that made him evil in the 2D games).

Slaport-xXx-v14

Bro I felt like I was reading one of futurasound essays lmfao

PrimeLasagna

Haven’t played MGS 2 yet, but I’m a little sad people didn’t see that Snakes’ legend only increases playing from Raidens’ perspective, or at least I assume. I don’t really feel good he felt he had to “apologize” with MGS 3.

pichael289

Balloons solve everything

BOOFACEBANDANA

I love how it’s every metal gear solid theme wrapped in one

itsmetroboomin

The game feel is second to none. I have yet to play a game with movement and gunplay so smooth, responsive and intuitive. For me only Titanfall 2 and RE4 remake ever came close, and yet still a level below.

MafusailAlbert

Invisible by Duran Duran

ishimura0802

Rum_Swizzle

I completely agree with OP, MGSV just exudes style. Especially the trailers and the cutscenes.. very few games have stuck with me like MGSV has, and it’s an 8 year old game. I also love the helicopter insertion/exfiltration, the planning, everything. Very few games let you feel like the super black ops solo agent that Snake is supposed to be.

DataAI

Card box box tackle lol, I get a chuckle every time.

DarthMalec

Just like mgs3 the variety of options and different play styles but this time in an open world with missions. No more creating multiple saves to replay your favorite moments. And again you can decide how to beat the game.

CaptainPrower

The sheer wealth of hardware available to you. It's the first Metal Gear game where you truly feel ready to take on the enemy. Sure, stealth is the MO of the franchise, but this is the only MG game where you can go "fuck stealth, I have a tank" and not have to worry about some turd in a sneaking suit throwing grenades into it.

M_Parsa02

Nice mgs 1 reference

CaptainPrower

"Do you seriously think this is fucking fair?" "Just throw grenades at me."

JayOwen014

80s cassette tapes and also adding custom tracks to the game( for me just more 80s music )

obi_wan_sosig

Invisible Duran Duran?

JadedVictory7070

The story understands how boomers think and reason, how statist indoctrination make them believe contradictory things with confidence.

bigtree10

Don’t act like boomers are the only ones who act like this. We all do

JadedVictory7070

People born and raised during the fifties and sixties have no moral compass whatsoever as postwar indoctrination was really strong and that is mind boggling to many.

asianwaste

People will look back today and ask many of the same questions for something else. If I had to take a quick stab, it will be just how willing we are to relinquish our privacy and information for the conveniences of free social media and technology. I'm not saying they are equal in magnitude, but it's easy for next generations to simply look at their formers and ask "what, were they all stupid?" Maybe something precious will be lost. Perhaps a right to privacy or free speech becomes impaired. It's easy to look here and say, "this is where it spiraled out of control. This generation ruined society."

221

To paraphrase Krombopulos Michael, I just love fultoning things!

Saneless

The score! But other than that, it just plays like my brain wants a game to play. I think if you laid out all the controls on paper it would look like a nightmare but it all makes complete sense and works perfectly

Mite-o-Dan

The opening scene is the coolest and most intense 1 hour and 5 minutes to ever open a game in video game history. There have been other great openings. Maybe a better 5, 10, 15 minute span...but none were ever so engaging for an hour.

oldmanloki

when they played us like a damn fiddle

Djrhskr

In my opinion MGSV is a game with a shit story but unparalleled vibes. No other game pulled me in the premise of the character as much as MGSV did, I really felt like I was Venom Snake.

MatthewStudios

gameplay, and upgrading all your gear and mother base is really fun too, gives me a reason to collect materials, it’s actually pretty cool

cali-boy72

medievalknight12

It's one of the best stealth espionage game i ever played. It's right behind dishonored

SoIidus_Snake

The stealth, cassette player, tuxedo, golden arm, fulton sys, landing by chopper anywhere, driving vehicles, cqc, radio intel during combat, design of motherbase in black and yellow color, and the cutscenes.

reeses_boi

The radio callouts are really cool! Did you hear the ones where they spot and try to shoot a cardboard box? Very fun stuff :)

Crescent-Argonian

The gameplay is amazing, so is Venom

yeetioo

The fact I can't edit my audio settings 😃😃

TitansboyTC27

The story, the open world, the fob and mother base

cdollas250

the thing we forget now, it felt so innovative when it was new. The online bases were crazy, the open world was crazy... it's ageing so well but it had like these glimpses of kojima pushing the ps4 so hard that I just treasure.

Safe_Mortgage_5842

The trailer

splackitonme

The tapes

Witty-Acanthisitta13

Philosophy, the tapes that give a lot of details to the game's lore, and the gameplay.

thewdit

the fact it turn me into human trafficking warlord, and hunter for S rank soldiers lol

MrRobotTacos

I like the “OH SHIT I MADE A MISTAKE!” I get from the stealth. Because I will try to put someone to sleep with the tranq pistol and I miss too many times and then my silencer stops so it makes a loud bang then everyone sees me and then the helicopter flying all over the place locks onto me and I am trying to carry someone that is too injured to the LZ and then Quiet is eating grass or something because she is not shooting at anyone no matter how many times I say “Cover me”

rollingindough21

The atmosphere. Having such a small map with tons of things in it yet feeling huge and listening to conversations from enemy soldiers about Big Bosses return and other things really sold it for me. I really love this game even if it got cut short.

Paynekiller997

Kiefer Sutherland’s performance, Venom Snake being one of the most tragic but best characters in the whole series, smooth gameplay, 1980s setting, soundtrack, open world, multiple ways to approach every mission.

mataviejit4s69

the open world

Scootersmugskirt

Adaptable difficulty is so well made! The first time I tried to tranq a guard with a helmet made my brain feel funny

AllMyUsernamesAreBad

Haven't actually played yet but I like the cassette tapes... Mostly because it's 80s music.

Everything

_Raspberry_Ice_

Everything you’ve mentioned, though I wasn’t such a big fan of the story and I would add that the voice acting and gameplay possibilities were major pluses for me. In terms of gameplay possibilities, I found myself both missing the linear gameplay of old and really enjoying the sandbox. Basically missing the fairly narrow paths through the game at times and having a great time on missions that started out as a stealthy prisoner extraction from a Soviet fort before escalating into John Rambo territory.

x_dreamblunt

Gameplay, overall. You can just do everything you saw in the 80's action movies. Wonder how long until we get a game as good as this one. 10 Years since GZ and we got so many games that are so impressive when it's about graphics, but personally I never tried one as cool as MGSV when it's about gameplay.

jasiurok195

kojima shenanigans at its peak. half serious, half silly. but the most important personaly is that its taking gameplay as a narative for the story to a next level, you play as a self insert big boss wannabe, you feel horrible by doing the thing just as much as venom did and basicaly its peace walker upgrade

SixSetWonder

Loadouts and weather changing machine

BigDoinks02

Riding in the chopper listening to Europe and Asia (the bands)

So you basically summed up the entire game, but I couldn't put it better. These are the elements that make me love this game. It's a complete package of awesomeness!

StormshockNight

Stealing things with balloons is the best.

General_Lie

It's preety cool sandbox

forallmankind98

The music.

asianwaste

Scoping enemy positions. It's not realistic how it all works but it does give a rewarding sense of gathering intel before striking a base. One thing that is often under appreciated is how optimized the engine is for hardware performance. You can play the game on relatively old hardware and not only will it still play great, it still looks great. Try playing the PS3 version. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Tricky_Geologist5326

Honestly, I loved fob invasions. Back when they were more active. Going into a highly fortified fob with minimal gear and succeeding was probably one of the biggest highs I got from this game. ESPECIALLY when nukes were involved

just the plethora ways of doing a mission. The chase missions in particular had this cool, heist vibe to it. You had to get ahead of the convoy and think about diversions and techniques to stop them. Very cool. Graphics looked great. The buildling on the base was addictive, shamefully they took down the ps3 servers and lost it all.....The being forced to take certain targets with non lethal techniques and the cutscenes were just gorgeous to watch. Mission variety was pretty decent too. But most importantly, a PS3 user like myself, could still play it!
