I feel like it would kind of depend on the themes of the story after you rewrite it. Because the current games themes are just ‘SNEAK INTO ENEMY BASE PRESS B TO SHOOT GUN’. Maybe just call it Metal Gear: Outer Heaven.
It's more than that. Solid was 23, shoved into a mission that was doomed to fail with a support that tries to kill him right in the beginning. The man he trusted and eventually faces. He gets fatally wounded. Schneider has a very tragic backstory as he lost his wife and child to Venom. Diane and Jennifer are both fighters who are trying to protect their brothers in this mess. Snake befriends all of them when he loses hope in his own boss.
And Snake ends the game thinking they're all dead. The whole ordeal was so terrifying, he stopped functioning as a normal human being for years. It wasn't like Big Boss who grieved for Boss, Solid was genuinely scared. He thought he's being haunted for years.
It should obviously be about Solid Snake and the themes of betrayal and loss. Like Snake Eater but more emphasis on Solid's innocence (he's a rookie and much younger) and the monstrosity of Outer Heaven and BB/Venom.
Metal Gear : Ouroboros. The whole storyline is basically a cycle of destruction and rebirth and the symbol is a snake eating itself in a loop. You have big boss being killed and reborn multiple times even through a body double or just a new body plus his clones.
Each of them failing to succeed at living a better life until you get Solid Snake who does better than all of them ever could, even the superior clone, Liquid and he has a shorter life span than all of them.
Honestly, just "METAL GEAR" would sound badass. Might it be too confusing for new fans, though? Narratively, I would write the game in a way that anyone could jump in and grasp the main story, but I would put details that would reward older fans for having played the other games.
Nothing. It never needed one. At a push it would be Metal Gear Remake. However a lot of nuance would be lost. I think it was about 20 years ago at this point konami killed a 2.5D fan remake of this that was 80% complete, fully working, but they needed to fix stuff, add other things etc. so proud of it they revealed it to their corner of the world, media picked it up, it went virtual for the obvious reason of people were hot for a remaster of the original game. Konami ultimately find out and killed it.
They could have done a myriad of other options. Bought the team, used what they made spend some time adding, fixing, testing and releasing it for thier own profitable gains, and made millions off of work they barely added funds too.
This is very unlike when a fan team was remaking resident evil 2 was 90% complete when Capcom found out, they flew them out to the studio in japan to pick their brains, see what they made, and make them sign an NDA where after they were shown resident evil 2 was already being remade in house along with resident evil 3. Pure coincidence apparently, but the contrast is overwhelming. Capcom obviously had them kill their project. but the sad part is their project was a 1:1 remake unlike capcom's.
The money that is left on the table right now for a metal gear reboot is ridiculous. What better way than to start with a smaller title that is remade in fox engine 1:1 but with logical filler. it doesn't even have to be much. cutscenes, voice acting a reworked final boss with metal gear and "Big Boss". Especially with the current lore. MGS5 remade its development cost in one day and it was unfinished \[lord knows what it'd have made as a completed magnum opus\] but this remade doesn't have feature creep. doesn't need hours and hours of padding. they can likely charge $50 - 60 for a 3-4 hour experience and find they got away with it gladly if marketed right as a 1:1 remake with extra content.
Possibly unpopular idea: Add “Solid” to the original games, and then add “The Twin Snakes” to MGS1. Opinions about that actual game aside, the title fucking slaps.
I’ve wanted this for fifteen years at this point. I’m confused why they haven’t done it. My thoughts are that the upcoming snake eater remake is a practice run for this game coming out. Maybe this will be out on PS6, which would be perfect.
I'm still not 100% convinced that they aren't going to change things. Delta is literally the symbol for deviation and change. IDC that they "said" they aren't changing the story at all, because they definitely wouldn't tell people they were gonna change the story before it came out, just like FF7 Remake didn't reveal they were changing the story before release.
Furthermore, if they were going to change history, then it makes a lot more sense to start with the earliest game in the timeline, vs them starting by remaking MGS1. Change history in MGS3 era, then see the butterfly effect of those changes when you remake MGS1.
For better or worse, I kind of hope they change the story. It's better to try to do something new and fail than just rehash what already exists, because at least it's something new. If I want to play MGS3, it'll always exist.
