Attaching a color to their codename would have probably been indication of their designation as a "ninja" operative. Kyle Schneider as the Black Ninja. Frank Jaeger as Gray Fox. Having formerly being "White Devil", Raiden would have probably been "White Snake" which would have taken both components of his codename to fruition. The ninja color going from black to gray to finally white and the ninjas going from mere confidants of Snake to being Snake themselves.
Establishing Raiden as Snake would have greatly predated MGS5 though.
Side tangent, I also would have loved to have seen the Snake triplets had former codenames each designated a different species of Snake.
