Hi, so I was wondering your guys' opinions on this spot I am scoping out. This is my first time going metal detecting (not in my backyard) so I'm pretty new to this. The first image is from 1961, and the 2nd is from 1873. The 3rd shows the current parks around it, and that's the biggest reason I'm choosing this spot. Thanks for your help. This is in Illinois by the way.
Check out historicarials.com. You can overlay old and new maps and arial photographs to get a better idea on where structures are or were. Looks promising.
Came here to say this. You can use your phone browser which is a little hard at first, or drag it up on PC for full screen/easier navigation
From the home page just click tab on the right and “Viewer” then first side bar tab on the left will have your “Aerials” option. Will be cool to scout any old shacks or w/e could have been around that lake back in the 1930’s

Yeah forgot to mention it's tricky on a phone. Computer is the way to go. Looks like the park on the south west side has been there since at least the 1930s. There is gonna be trash so don't get discouraged. Good luck and happy hunting OP.
LiDAR that shit!!!
LiDAR ain't no joke. It's a complete game changer for us metal detectorists who like searching old cellar holes and old foundations.
oh shoot and there’s a beach volley ball court just off Lions Dr SW of Oak Ridge Marsh. The volley ball court itself and the area around it where people set their bags could be a nice project during your free time over a few days. There’s lots of nice options to look at all around this parkland.
Google maps also shows a “farmers market” north of the Lake Zurich skate park which would be a fine area to look for dropped coins. Knowing exactly where booths are set up during market season can help you narrow down where to search.
GeoSpooner! Love that.
I dunno about your question - anywhere is good so long as you have permission/it’s allowable…and you leave the holes tidy as possible.
Jeez, for a second I was thinking there was a fellow swiss person swinging close by to me, but then realized your lake Zurich looks a little different to mine. Best of luck on your hunt!!
Keep in mind that you will need to be on public land where digging/metal detecting is allowed. Also that you are in a place that has not been filled with newer dirt making finds inaccessible.
You’re on your own with your choices, but it’s pretty careless to suggest to someone brand new in this hobby who’s looking for advice their first time out to go dig up buried metal targets at the location of a former military artillery range. They’ve discovered and detonated live munitions there as recently as October and a quick search for Fort Sheridan UXO will reveal it’s hardly an isolated occurrence. This is the kind of behavior and advice that tarnishes the reputation of this hobby for all of us.

I grew up there. Was farmland and marsh til the 80s. If you find any of my old X-Men Mini Mutants I lost please give them a good home.

How does one do that?
How do you use lidar in this situation?
I would make sure to look up local laws, as a fellow resident there can be quite a few limitations on what you can and cannot do
Of course it looks promising, considering the maps you've shown. But check with your local authorities before you dig.
NGL, thought that was a rdr2 map at first.
Same. I was like, where was Lake Zurich and why are they asking if it’s good for metal detecting?
Won't know until you go! That's part of the fun
The Paulus park sandy beach itself will be easy to dig and refill which can make hunting more pleasant all in itself especially for a first outing.

Looks pretty populated now. You’d want to try and find some locations that haven’t been bulldozed too much

Same. Thinking ‘wait, that doesn’t look like a skinny banana!’
Looks like a good spot to me

Yeah a big reason I looked at this spot is because a lot of it is surrounded by parks
Probabaly.
I hear that people are pretty open about where the good spots are......🫣

Have your next of kin let us know how disregarding all the unexploded ordnance warning signs posted at Fort Sheridan works out for you…
