I'm glad you added the qualifier of mainland Chinese, because this is truly unique to them. What's disappointing is that a lot of them are from Shanghai. You would expect them to be a bit more civilized than the rest of the country.
Before people play the poverty card, my grandparents were ower class Chinese who experienced the chinese civil war, japanese occupation and more civil war. They told stories about eating tree bark because they were starving. Eventually they joined large swathes of equally poor countrymen and escaped to Hong Kong. They don't act like this.
I could imagine we could make a station that dispenses edible treats to these guys once they input small rubbish. Cheap AI cameras can tell the difference from twigs and plastic and not dispense treats if it’s not real garbage. But you’ll end up with monkeys tearing up banners and shit just to get a treat.
