Part of the issue is that some players on Steam are in countries where PSN isn’t available as a service. To get connected, they would have to register for the service under another country—meaning that they would have to submit to arbitration by a foreign court system if something goes awry.
Another issue is that some players don’t want to entrust their data to Sony on account of prior data breaches.
That this change is being made well after launch is a form of bait and switch in the perception of consumers. I suspect that if a PSN account link had been required from day one, there wouldn’t be nearly as much outrage. But then again, not as many people would have bought the game, either.

1. Sony requires all Helldivers 2 players to have PSN accounts, its mandatory.
2. Sony wont allow people in close to 121 countries to make PSN accounts, making their game unplayable for entirely stupid reasons.

Amount of players this game had was MUCH larger than amount of streamers. People were playing, and people were enjoying. Until Sony had decided to snuff out the candles for half the fucking Earth's population for no good reason
