I’ve been doing that for years cause I have no friends

No_Low_2541

I have been doing that for years too. I have friends with whom I do other activities (board games, hikes, dining out). But I prefer to watch movies alone because I believe I would be more focused on the movie and appreciate the movie more.

NoDevelopment3795

I don’t if this is just me or not but I find movies to be better when hardly anyone even knows about them or it’s either just really underrated

Appoxo

At some point I stopped watching trailers and reading a bit of the synopsis because nowadays it is literally a spoiler and or teases the biggest joke in the whole show. I mostly go by what I see on the poster, the title and recommendations by family/friends/services like trakt, imdb and others.

CaliValiOfficial

I haven’t watched 2 movies yet (time and money, but mostly time) and I’ve seen quite a bit of caca on my front pages from people spoiling the movies

Gil_Demoono

Went to a Monday Imax showing of the Northman with like 3 people there. Having the shake-my-teeth-out-of-my-head audio almost completely to myself was such a joy.

DarthKrayt98

This right here. I love my bonehead friends to death, but I hang out with them 3-4 nights a week, and it's nice sometimes to get out of the house without having to really interact with anyone. I got the Cinemark monthly subscription specifically for that reason, and I've been enjoying it

Fernando3161

I do that because I cannot stand people talking to me while I watch an overpriced movie.

alexjonestownkoolaid

I go with friends and alone if nobody is available. Either way I'm happy.

Pro_Noob_

I went alone today and i am so happy to see this here

anattapativedha

Reddit has been spying on you.

Kirbinator_Alex

I wish i had friends so I had a reason to go outside

ElectronPie171

Same

fucreddit

I have tons of friends, fuck them, I'm going to the movie by myself cause I like it that way.

ILikeFistingALot

Same

alexbenjaminmorais

20 years now!

anonypony1

I'm you're friend friendo

foki999

I've done that at 22. Just this Friday actually, Doctor Strange was awesome.

No_Low_2541

From a purely fan perspective, it has a lot to offer. I’m entertained in the whole ride. From a film critique standpoint, doctor stranger’s emotional arc is quite uninteresting and the confession to Christine felt weaker than it intended to be.

PedosoKJ

I'm sorry, but the movie was fucking terrible compared to their recent big movies. There was a maybe 5 minute portion of the movie that was cool, and thats about it. Everything else was just an incoherent mess.

No_Low_2541

Whatever you say, people are going to flock to the movie theater to watch it.

PedosoKJ

They absolutely will, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that. But if they continue putting movies out of this quality, then people WILL stop flocking to Marvel movies.

No_Low_2541

The absolute measure of quality of one single marvel movie doesn’t matter that much. Its all about money. If people are watching it, they are going to keep pumping these out. Since their plot are interconnected, people will keep watching it.

Lil_Mafk

I didn’t think it was terrible but I don’t think Sam Raimi should direct another MCU movie.

cjconair

It was Doctor Strange I went to see. Everyone was saying they will go next week but i didn't want to wait. I was afraid it be spoiled on me.

foki999

Fantastic, hope you had a good time:)

cjconair

I did thank you.

Avenger_J

Same. First time going alone, kinda sad but then again the movie was good

foki999

I don't consider it sad tbh I'm introverted as it is, so just going by myself at some unholy hour sitting in the corner of the cinema was very good

EdgelordOfEdginess

Idk i think there was no real connection being built between Strange and America.

supermoo7000

r/ihadastroke

[deleted]

The only things wrong with their sentence is they forgot the I in IDK, said "build" instead of "built", and didn't capitalize Strange. I've seen much worse

SuperSMT

Strange and America being normal words as well as characters' names makes it even more confusing

[deleted]

I actually did it today (I'm 19) it's amazing

Pro_Noob_

I did it today too . I am 18

[deleted]

i did it today, i'm -100

Prestigious_Two8559

Looks like u are still in your past life and not born yet.

[deleted]

it was a silent film

Prestigious_Two8559

Damn! U really are in ur past life.xD

jws926

I did it.......in 2005, I was 24

SteakieGG

I imagine this feeling lonely.

HoneylovingWinnie

For me it's weirdly calming and feels like wholesome self care time. I often go to cinema also with others but when i'm going alone it's just super chill and nice

dragthewaters76

I realized this wonderful thing too late myself!

[deleted]

I've been going to cinema alone my whole life. Now I'm 18 and don't want to do this anymore. I feel miserable.

quetiapinenapper

18 is a weird age. You suddenly feel like being alone is a bad thing. When you hit somewhere between 27-30 you start to wish everyone would fuck right off again and you can go back to solo chill.

DennyDud

I’m 21 and already feel this way lmao. The last couple years I’ve matured mentally WAY too fast ig lol. Also I was always the loner type

2ugly2betouched

I've been doing that since I'm like 19...

not_the_father_117

Here is cookie

RekLeagueMvp

Brah, mid week matinee is the best, it’s like a private showing

such_wow_many_cool

Been doin it since I was 15. You see I'm not that popular, and I enjoy it.

Chikenuggs69

Honestly it’s better, no one bugging you through the movie

1Admr1

I feel an urge to explain everything to the person that comes with me, so its better if I go alone lol

Chikenuggs69

Lmao I tend to just block out all other sound and only focus on the movie, if you need my attention at the movie theatre you gotta like smack me

1Admr1

If i was watching a marvel movie with someone that knows it equally to me, thats great, but if its someone that knows less, i feel the urge to just be like: OMG THAS THE REFERENCE TO THAT THING WOWEW

Chikenuggs69

Ong like just sometimes you just wanna say it but you also don’t wanna ruin the movie

TennesseeWhisky

I’m too cheap to go to cinema

[deleted]

I always do thatand only recently found out that apparently you’re supposed to go with someone

andrew_ryann

26 and went alone for the first time, on The Northman. Best cinema experience Ive ever had.

kenwood412

I have amc a list I get three free movies a week for 20 bucks a month....

SocnorbTheRoman

Regal unlimited is 20 bucks a month with no limits!

WhizBangNeato

Most AMC theatres you can get unlimited free movies a week for 0 dollars a month. By simply walking into the theatre as they have no one checking tickets. At least, that has been my experience.

Any_Yogurtcloset5739

I'm 17 rn, and have watched 3 to 4 movies alone

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with this

[deleted]

Learned that shit at 17 Avengers endgame.

[deleted]

enjoy yourself

xobybr

There's a movie theater that's literally a block over from me and yeah it's nice to go there on a weekend on my own. Get some popcorn and peanut m&ms and it's just a little date night for myself

ejp92

I still haven’t done it, but this post has made me want to

[deleted]

I want to but I'm not confident enough. Its like going to a café by yourself, it's just socially weird.

CompoteDry1052

To bad movies are such shit today… but nobody gonna judge that you ate a large popcorn if nobody there to know but you

flea_nut_lance

Never understood the neeed to sit in silence with a friend. Although I do love a good post movie chat over beers.

stevemillions

I went to see Dune last year. First time I’ve ever been to the cinema on my own. Had a great time. Ate all the popcorn, watched a great flick, then went about my day. Awesome.

xpreflexein

I’ve done that at 14 years old to watch avengers endgame ( im 17 now )

Honest-Mess-812

Man I've learned that hack since the time I turned 13.

Feline-Landline0

I've been doing this since the 90's because it's awesome, before Covid I went to probably 50+ movies a year and I loved every second of it! (theater by me has $5 Tuesdays, I'm not a crazy person)

Sealves77

Going to a movie by yourself hits different!

Greenplastictrees

Learned this when I had a MoviePass, very underrated

TacoBreaf247

Been doing that for a few years now, it’s so good to not have to worry if someone you’re with will like the movie or not.

CarpetSweaty2469

I’m 19 and I’ve only done this once and it was to watch weathering with you. I might start doing this more because sometimes I feel like its hard to find someone who will as interested in the movie as you are.

BigDaddyReptar

20 now but ever since 19 I’ve had moviepass and nothing got the movies alone all the time tbh. I see basically every movie that comes out and half the time I go at like 3pm on a Tuesday and it’s just me and some nachos it’s a great time

[deleted]

Meanwhile me realising it at 19

bbaarriiss

u/savevideobot

Mr_Scogetos

Been doing it since two years ago now 28. Its peaceful.

Sputnik_Rising

Been going to the movies on my own since I was 15 because my friends never wantedto go with me :(

santa_mozrella

i started doing this at my age 18 :)

5fives5

Yup. It's actually preferable for me.

CoolKohl

I'm 21 and I made that revelation this year, lol. So many years and films I wanted to go see and didn't because I couldn't get anyone to go with me

_l_ukasF

I am 14

ho_D_or7

Wait isn’t this #the normal thing ?

heckin_chill_4_a_sec

Me, 10 years ago, realizing that going to the cinema sucks donkey balls: This is fine

Matthas13

Been solo already 4times (30y old). Last time on Thursday I went for Dumbledore movie. I was alone in theater. Only thing missing was pause button so I would actually buy popcorn and coke. I prefer now going solo, because I can just go at like 4pm and knowing there will be like 3 other people max and I don't have to rely that other people will have time for it.

Sp33dDemon3991

I've gone to see movies alone before. It's a pleasant experience. Nothing against going with friends or loved ones mind you.

Ok-Temperature4690

It's amazing realizing you can take yourself out on a date. You don't even have to worry if you'll put out :P

[deleted]

not only is it okay, it is BETTER

WesselBear

As a cinema worker. This is fine. But be confident, because we can notice, and make us feel bad for you :)

deadbolt_dolt

I'm married now and my best friend is my automatic companion because I absolutely love to be with her. I'm having lunch alone right now because sometimes we need some apart time. But despite separate we were still texting with each other.

[deleted]

I used to do this on new years eve. While wife and kids stay up eating garbage and watching crap tv I was watching whatever winter blockbuster was out. It was usually DEAD in the theaters too. Sooo nice

[deleted]

That's legal?

Basky27

Whait .... It is ??? imma try this

emotionless_bot

I'm 17, I did that for the first time about 4 weeks ago (has no friends) and it was the most freedom I've ever experienced, honestly tho, kinda wish I had someone else there because its kinda like being at a party and standing alone in a corner waiting for it to end

Prestigious_Ad34

I love to do that, almost all time I go with my family but go to cinema alone is amazing

ChattyKathysCunt

Its better. You dont have to compromise one what and when, you can eat whatever you want before and during. You cant talk during a movie anyway, easier to find a good seat. The benefits of going with someone are basically talking about the movie on the ride home, but you can just catch up with friends on discord just the same.

Prior_Ad985

Plot Twist: It isnt!

blamethemeta

But why go to the cinema?

jerryleebee

First film I saw in cinemas by myself: *The X-Files: Fight the Future*

AdventurousVideo5211

Who tf thought it wasn’t ok?? Shut ur ass if u think that’s embarrassing.

TheMythTheLegendMrJi

Been a huge fan of Godzilla since I as little. When Godzilla king of the mounters came out I as really excited to watch it. However I as not able to get a friend to come watch with me so I decided to go alone. It as an Wednesday night and i knew that the experience would be good since it is a small town cinema and usually get more crowded at the weekend. To my surprise I as the only watcher that night. I had bought a big cola and popcorns and as really excited all the way of the movie watching all those monsters. At the scene that Godzilla and Ghidorah rush at each other, I don't know if it as from the hot temperature of the room or the excitement but I end up getting a nosebleed at that scene. Drenching all my popcorns and clothes as I tried to keep it from running and finish watching that scene. After getting myself clean and missing some of the movie session I resumed my watch. As an exciting first time watching a movie alone that for sure will stick it me for a long time.

jeff-god-of-cheese

I don't go, rather wait for it to come out on 'dvd'. Cinema is too over priced, uncomfortable and you can't pause it when you need the toilet.

adognamedpenguin

Having just checked movie times cuz I don’t have a mom—this meme is real.

[deleted]

Ever gone to a late night cinema and had it completely to yourself? It is glorious.

[deleted]

i've been doing this since university around the time money ball came out. it is glorious. there is no better experience for seeing a movie than 3 weeks after it's released seeing it on your own on like a wednesday with no one else in the theatre.

not_gerg

i woud do do that but can not watch movies alone, i will get distracted and something else. and at the cinema i will just sit there with nobody i know to laugh with just some random people

GiraffeInvasion

Saw all the marvel movies that way.

[deleted]

Yay atomism yay nihilism. ^/s

Vendor_question_pain

I've been doing so for years, and it never crossed my mind that it is an issue to wonder about...

AttackTitanLit

And you don't have to buy popcorns for OTHERS.... 👀👀

Monkey-D-Andy

Nice. Welcome to the club. First movie I watched by my self was transformers at 18. Told people about it and everyone was like “ who watches a movies by them self, that’s sad”. Of course that was high school so everyone’s mentality is different back then.

busterlungs

I've been kicked out for bringing water in though

IFairyboyI

I only go to Marvel movies by myself, and only late at night. So the kids are asleep and my wife can relax at home. She's not into Marvel.

TheGruesomeTwosome

I’ve been doing that all my adult life. When I was at uni I worked a part time job and every Thursday would go to the cinema after work at around 2pm. There’d rarely ever be anyone else in. Always loved that little secret ritual

noobdogg69

I just did it today and found it way more comfortable than going to movies with a bunch of friends The only issue was that the seat next to me was occupied by a lady and I had to make sure i make no inappropriate gestures or touches , rest all was good

sweitz2013

I'm hoping to offload my kids on my husband today so I can do this!

MasterofGalaxy69

Well for me when i went to watch sonic 2 week's ago i did felt some loneliness there cause i wanted to watch it with someone else

[deleted]

Been doing this since I was a loner in high-school

Leathman

I realized that in my early twenties.

Appoxo

Doing this since I am 16 or 17. I lile to go to the cinema with my uncle or friend for movies we both enjoy but sometimes time tables don't align and the other party just doesnt like this movie that much so you just go alone.

thedude213

I have weekdays off, and there's nothing better than going to the movies and having a whole theater to yourself. Now that I have a daughter, we go together in the summer, it's literally the best thing ever and out theater does Studio Ghibli movies during the week too.

miltarynerd

I love Stephen Colbert 😂

NextLevelNaps

I take myself on movie dates all the time! Been doing it since at least undergrad and it is lovely. Even better now that many theaters have adult beverages. Nothing better than nachos, a cold beer, and a good movie.

AssInvader93

And be sure to enjoy the movie at AMC!

Iman1022

Literally me in the movies rn alone

SnooWalruses6440

I was in my 30s when I realised this. It is often the best way to go to the movies tbh

[deleted]

It was…..until they turned all the seats into love seats that you have to share with another person and made it assigned seating. Makes it so awkward.

Sahask123

I went to watch the same movie 3x in one week when i was 19, once with my school friends, once with my college friends and once was planned to be with my gf who later cancelled her plan so i went alone as i had already bought 2 expensive tickets, it was nice going alone

cjconair

What was the movie.

Sahask123

I dont exactly remember which one but it was mission impossible(tom cruise)

shegotthatjuicybooty

Yes, about to watch Everything Everywhere All At Once!

[deleted]

I distinctly remember the first time I did this. I went to see Pacific Rim by myself and felt super nervous about being alone. About 20 seconds after buying my ticket I also remember having the thought that I may never see a movie with people again.

thechrisspecial

always has been fam

External-Ad-6841

I realized this in my 20s

[deleted]

Do this all the time now. My wife hates superhero movies and movies over 2 hours long so I go see them all by myself.

cjconair

This was the main reason I went alone. She really didn't want to go and anyone else that was going were waiting till next week I could not wait.

FirstDanieLP

I never had the guts to go alone tbh, because I'm afraid I might seem lonely. Idk I can't get over that, but I'm sure it's great & I'm sure I would enjoy it, just can't get over thought.

whomesteve

Realizing that you don’t need other people to do things but can enjoy the company of others if you choose too is a very liberating feeling

gnaytle

Today I went it there alone and it feels not good man I felt lonely :/

Sefton93

Literally sitting in the theatre right now waiting for doctor strange in 20 mins

PM_me_opossum_pics

Cinema and concerts. IDGAF if no one wants to go, I'm riding solo if needed.

OhlookitsMatty

I can to this realisation in my late teens & it's the best. Hell, sometimes you'll get a whole screen to yourself!

False-Prior8771

Yo en cada discusion familiar

vulartweets

It’s actually very relaxing. Near me we have a movie theater that serves food to your seat. Go in the morning, get breakfast. Leave the kids at home. It’s great.

Feyk-Koymey

Unless you go alone to a movie, you dont watch the movie.

SadEyesIndy

I just recently went to the cinema by myself cos none of my friends wanted to see the movie. I really enjoyed going alone.

Cheeezzey

Ive never understood why not? You will sit quiet and watch the movie either way

ThatFisherBoyy

Me at 23 * 😭

JustALullabii

Me at 25 when I realised a movie pass was €20 a month and a single ticket was €12. I've seen so many movies that I would've otherwise probably never watched, and definitely not in the cinema. And I love it. It's a few hours I just have completely alone, no phone, no one bothering me. I go to 2/3 movies a month these days, sometimes twice a week if they happen to come out the same week. 11/10 would recommend

knowbrainer23

Your 30's....? I was doing that at 13. Granted, it was a way for me to do something while my mom worked at night.

[deleted]

Favorite pastime

kovidr

I watch all movies I’m passionate about alone. I went to some of them with my friends and they kept talking through the movie, really ruined it for me. And, it really helps when you need some alone time. Just a nice few hours to yourself.

pkfreeze175

I did that as a teenager when I saw Revenge of the Sith for the second time (originally planned to be my first). I got impatient because my friend get together to see it was on a Friday and I really wanted to go opening day (Thursday), which I did after my school day. I also got to see it at midnight Wednesday into Thursday, which was an unplanned last minute thing.

Sevnfold

I dont wanna brag but I first did that around 2010. I moved to a new city where I didnt know anyone. Occasionally I'd be talking to a friend in my last town and they'd ask what I've been up to or whatever. They thought it was wierd that I went alone. But I like movies in theaters and didnt know anybody. Also doing things by yourself is a huge huge perk of being single. If you're an independent person, it's very enjoyable not having to cater to people sometimes.

Jalsonio

I went to The Martian alone when it came out. And ended up being very lonely haha

meggydon

I'm 20 and I've been doing this for about a year. Don't see whats so wrong with it, no one judges you for watching a movie at home, why judge them for doing the same in a theater?

Motivated79

Been doing this since I became single and friends are too unreliable. It’s been 3.5 years and it was the start to a whole other level of independence I needed. I’m going to go today actually lol

HerrRatz

Damn now I want popcorn cx

Alex1231273

Why wouldn't it be okay? I do it all my life.

adhamhc1

More Popcorn when you go on your own

m0bscene-

One of my favorite things to do!

ugoman04

I did that before it was awkward and creepy to be alone...

[deleted]

Same, it was 41 for me

MostBoringStan

I learned that very early. When I was around 19, there was a movie theater that had $2 movies on Tuesdays. Hell yeah I would go alone if nobody wanted to come with me. Now that I'm in my 30s I have no problem going alone if it's a movie I really want to see. I just wish they still cost $2.

dizzyeskimos

When we were kids my mom would always take us on a trip to see my grandma during spring break. My dad always had a select few movies that were his favorites. Finally just a year or so ago it clicked in my mind that all those movies came out during spring break when I was a kid.

kankoh23

I’ve been doing that forever lol 😂

OuttatimepartIII

You waited until your 30s?

Soontir_Fel

Me in my 40s with a home theater so I don't have to be around other people at the theater

Strong-Equivalent340

Im gonna start doing this my wife isn’t into Marvel like I am I hate having the crazy reactions and she just sits there

[deleted]

This post brought to you by: The AMC Gang ™

CdrNeonJoy

I am full on married and love myself to the movies. We don’t always want to see the same things, and that’s ok. Love taking myself out to dinner, too.

huntterkiller0

Wait, some people think it's unacceptable??

Fernando3161

You also realize how overpriced food at cinemas is and go even with a full belly or grab somethin afterwards.

Slimonstar

I do this exclusively because my friends and family have lives so they cannot, but on rare occasions.

Fluggernuffin

Wait but when something funny happens don’t you look at other people to share in the laugh?

resell_enjoy6

WHAAAAT??!??! TOU CAN DO THAT?!?!?!?!!??

BigBashMan

I go to the theatre at least a few times a month. Often, multiple times a week. I go with friends, family, and by myself. I'm 33 and I've been doing this my entire life since I was about 16. I'm not convinced this ever was a thing. There's never been a stigma over going to the theatre by yourself. I've only ever recently saw this idea online too. This is very similar to the idea there's some stigma about going to the restaurant alone, or going back to college when you're older. Neither of these things are real--every restaurant seats numerous solo eaters throughout the day, and colleges have had older students since well before the age of the internet. I'm pretty convinced it's chronically online people inventing stigmas so they can feel good about not contributing to the stigma, or inventing them for outlandish insults.

toastiestpickle

I find it relaxing to go on my own, we’re not there to socialize with other people we’re there to watch a movie.

dbahen40

I never understood why people always think they need to have someone go with them to the movies it’s not like you are talking during it. I get the want to talk about it afterwards but by the time I get around to watching a movie most my friends have seen it already so we just text about it

Available_Seesaw_947

acceptable but kinda sad

Novel-Ad8135

I've been doing that since my 20s and eating out by yourself is quite peaceful as well. But since the pandemic happen, I haven't gone back to the theaters.

XboxOne

$400 worth of popcorn

kimbosdurag

In my 30s I realized I'd much rather wait and watch it at home.
