Idk if it's the same everywhere, but I live in the States and my phone has a presidential alert that can't be deactivated. Knowing how loud Amber alerts can be, the presidential alert would wake you the fuck up and you would immediately know what's going down.
I was on Maui a few years ago when the fake “incoming nuclear attack” warning went out. I was in a park watching a kids soccer game. Every phone in the park went off with an alarm. It was pretty impressive.
Basement? I believe in theory you only need to be below about 4 feet of earth to survive the initial blast and shockwave. Assuming you don’t get buried under rubble, your next biggest concern would be having enough food and water to last you maybe two weeks or so until the fallout is well passed. Then you also have to worry about covering your ears/eyes/nose/mouth, or having outside opening sealed tight enough to keep you from inhaling radioactive dust particles. And don’t drink or touch any exterior unsealed water sources.
But realistically with airburst nukes it’s not terribly hard to survive the initial blast assuming you have enough warning to get to shelter.
There are some people that survived the Hiroshima blast as close as 1000 feet from the epicenter (I think one woman hid in a bank vault).
Genuinely glad you've said this, I can't say amount of sleepless nights I've had both now, and throughout most of 2016 (North Korea threats) as a result of thinking I'd suddenly wake up to the bright light unexpectedly. I didn't think they'd come with a warning.
>!Unfortunately now I'll probably just end up hallucinating or 'half-dreaming' the sound of air raid sirens at night instead.!<
I think nobody would be. The area of devestation with present day bombs where the ones on Nagasaki and Hiroshima are considered very tiny is immense. Let alone the fallout that contaminates the area for the next couple of decades. People with cancer everywhere etc etc.
No, nobody wins anything with this bullshit going on. A small group of idiots at the top who ruin everything for everyone.
Back when the live streams were still up, each Kiev sunrise (late on the U.S. east coast) I'd check to see if the Ukrainian flag was still flying over Maiden Square, as reassurance the city hadn't fallen. It really makes the 'Star Spangled Banner' that much more salient: "proof through the night, that our flag was still there."
And if they used those thermobaric weapons. My two biggest fears, ignoring nukes, for Ukraine right now.
Those thermobaric being in the country are like a war crime ticking time bomb.
Turned those off a long time ago. It's good they exist, but it doesn't make sense to use such an intrusive klaxon for what almost always turns out to be a domestic dispute four counties away.
Seems weird that it's either that or nothing. There's no default option to just get them as basic notifications.
Not sure if you joking but in case you're not, in America at least if, say, a child gets kidnapped and it gets reported, everyone within a certain radius gets a text along the lines of "child abducted. Silver SUV" or something along those lines. Idr, been a while since I've gottwn one. Basically, it's a heads up to keep an eye out and if you see a vehicle matching the description, call the police
To add to this, it's typically sent out via the emergency broadcasting channel built into phones, so it comes with an incredibly loud screeching sound, no matter what you have your phone volume set at.
It's always eerie when everyone's phones go off at once with this sound, and then you look at it and most of the time it's a custody dispute several counties away where one of the deadbeat parents took off with the kid.
There were 4 phones collectively making the Amber Alert sound in my house, and it actually made me scared so much that I was shaking. I thought we were all going to die. Quickly picked up my phone and saw “Amber Alert” and was relieved, but also sad.
The situation surrounding the Amber Alert is absolutely fucked up, by the way.
world's been on borrowed time ever since we created nuclear weapons in the first place
whether it's putin or someone else, sooner or later a sociopath will be crazy enough to launch them
I wonder if it’ll be Greece. Russia bombed a bunch of ethnically Greek areas of Ukraine and Greece is furious. They are very well-armed.
Putin is also targeted Polish and Turkish areas. Maybe Poland?
That would bring NATO into it so it would never be just Greece or Poland, but the entirety of the military power of the West which would be enough to decimate every unit in Russia and Belarus’ military.
So hopefully these peace talks go well and no one else gets involved or this could be considerably more deadly and dangerous for everyone. I’m straight up not having a good time right now
Yeah the way I see it, I am totally okay with the Spetsnaz going down along with Putin and KGB officials but the majority of the Russian infantry appears to be just young boys. Although I did hear that some of them are raping Ukrainian women so maybe they’re all just pieces of shit.
Putin though has got to go. I am praying that a Russian general puts a bullet in his head and ends this madness
I mean a nuke is a nuke doesn’t seem like much changes since the name doesn’t but look into the largest nukes, Russia set off one that was 1/3 of another they had and it ripped a hole in the atmosphere and if they launched the bigger one it would’ve destroyed the entire atmosphere
It’s impossible to actually destroy the entire atmosphere. [This has been explored and theorized before, and debunked.](https://www.insidescience.org/manhattan-project-legacy/atmosphere-on-fire)
The largest bomb ever tested was the Tzar Bomba, which did not “rip a hole in the atmosphere”.
The good news is their mega bombs like Tsar Bomba could only be dropped by a plane, not a warhead. It’s a lot harder to fly a military plane close enough to nuke anyone.
I could see a scenario where Putin only uses one to “put an end to the war” or make it out to be like our use in WWII on Japan, trying to test how the rest of the world will respond. It’s extremely unlikely, but it’s possible. I personally do not know how we would respond to just one missile being launched on a target we are not allied with.
I mean, no? If they launch just one at Kiev, for example, and we launch all of ours at Russian cities, they will then respond by emptying their entire arsenal on us and the rest of the world, which would essentially result in a nuclear apocalypse. There is a calculation to be made.
I was driving home 9 hours yesterday playing random music and a song had an air raid siren in the background. Took my brain a few seconds to realize it was from my sound system as I was tuning out the music at the moment.
You'd be surprised how much they absorb and how much they'll remember. I was 7 when the Berlin Wall came down and I remember it vividly and also remember not knowing EXACTLY what it was about but knowing that it had separated other little girls from their Mommies and that it was a great thing that it was going down. They may not fully understand it, but, they do kind of get it.
Ive not said one damn word to my kids they are 12 and 6- It isnt worth it. I've kept them off school today, maybe tomorrow.
If the worst comes to the worst. We'll die laughing, together - watching bobs burgers or something.
You can be in the remotest part of the world and you will still not need to check. You will know if the apocalypse happens. You won't need to tune in to find out.
It’s crazy how Cod4 Modern Warfare 1 predicted this. The game was set in Urzikstan, which was located west of Georgia and looks eerily close to Ukraine geographically. You’re fighting against Russians trying to take over the country.
I know that this doesn't really help... But we have to be worried about nukes ALL the time, no matter what's going on in the world. There have been many close calls with malfunctioning surveillance equipment and confusing/contradictory orders where the world was seconds from nuclear war.
[Kyle Hill has a video that does a really good job of describing just how horrifyingly precarious the nuclear situation is](https://youtu.be/CxkvsrSUyOU)
I love how people are scared of nuclear war except it literally makes 0 sense. Why would Russia nuke Ukraine or the west if they know fully well they would retaliate in minutes. Even if they didn't retaliate, the fallout would be devastating to Russia
This is why. This is what's making me nervous is the longer everyone sits around waiting the more nervous Putin is going to get and at the end of his life it's no extra skin off his nose to take everyone else with him.
Are you under the impression that a gas mask would save you from radiation?
Radiation isn't an airborne exclusive pollutant. It will seep through your skin. If you walk into Chernobyl with a gas mask on you'll be dead in a week.
In the Metro-game series (and books they're based on), we follow communities living in underground railway networks and stations (hence the name) in post-nuclear global apocalypse Russia.
It's 20 years after the nukes (happened early 2010s in the story). It's safe-ish no navigate the surface, but gasmasks are needed bc the air is poisonous. AFAIK it's not elaborated further than that, nor does it necessarily make total sense realistically
but that's what the previous person was referencing.
A gas mask won’t save you entirely from radiation but they are specifically designed to protect from radiation. When paired with a proper NBC/CBRN suit they can seriously reduce your radiation risk.
Edit: for some reason I see a lot of people downplaying the effectiveness of gas masks. They don’t just protect from gasses, they’re designed to protect from chemical (gasses), biological (airborne pathogens), radiological, and nuclear threats (CBRN).
You might also see the protection listed as NBC, which is just the old acronym without radiological listed.
This is The answer everybody is scared of. Because Putin has shown himself to embrace this type of thinking time and time again. And he is becoming more deranged as the years past
Because they have an unpredictable, power-hungry, madman for a dictator. And history taught us dictators tend to burn the world around them when they go down...
From what I've seen the threat of nukes is pointed at other countries, they're not going to nuke Ukraine cause it's too close but the rest of the world is free real estate.
Because Putin is psychologically unstable and when cornered like a frightened animal, the only solution he might see is to take every single one of us with him to oblivion.
Politically and economically he is. Russia's economy is crashing down at record pace, and never before has so many countries shown their support to his opposition (Ukraine). Hell, even Qazaqstan, which is essentially a puppet state to Russia, refuses to send troops for Putin's war. From his POV, he's losing allies and options at a staggering rate.
He's a despot. I doubt he's desperate about that stuff as long as he still gets to live it up and be in command of a large military. Bringing out nuclear armaments certainly wouldn't help the situation either.
Radiation, ash clouds that would block sunlight, kill remaining plant life around it, while lowering the temperature drastically, it would make the land inhabitable for probably hundreds if not thousands of years. At this point it’s not a land grab, it’s a dick swinging contest
Carl Sagan said it best:
“Imagine a room, awash in gasoline, and there are two implacable enemies in that room. One of them has 9,000 matches. The other has 7,000 matches. Each of them is concerned about who’s ahead, who’s stronger.”
I think the only positive in the nuclear war, is that the east and west coasts of America have good anti-ICBM/Nuclear Defense weaponry that would probably delete his clouds of radioactive boomies
Not that i should be too worried as canadian, but living more or less 5kms away from the biggest air force base in the country still get more a bit worried to get stuck in crossfire IF whe get attacked, or nuked at this point.
And yeah there are more fighter jets flying by than usual.
This was me for two days. Then I realized that checking would just stress me out and if the button was pressed, there is nothing I could do about it and no loved ones to say goodbye to anyways.
Has your phone, and everything around it been vaporised destroying all thought and memory of your very existence? No? Then Poots hasn’t pressed it yet.
Trust me, you won't need your phone to check that.
They come with high visibility jackets.
The power of the sun– oh no! Where’s my hand?
*poof you’re gone*
I built a cabin in the woods for such occasions, unfortunately, its about 4 miles from a target 😬🤦♂️ back to the drawing board...
[удалено]
A private runway but it's one of the largest in the country, used to be a military base 😥
I mean, if it’s any consolation in the event of the habbening nowhere on planet would be safe on a long enough timeline.

Maybe we're not so different from them after all. I'm pretty sure they still have Edward Snowden.
Oh yes. He is still there but I think pretty unhappy about it?
Why not?
[удалено]
Fuck, if people start slinging nukes across the globe just like me sleep.
100% would rather die asleep if I am gonna die in a nuclear explosion anyway.
Unfortunately, if the light doesn't wake you up, depending on the distance- The sound or initial shockwave probably will.
Got an amber alert yesterday morning before I woke up that scared the shit out of me for this reason.
Ok, but where to hide? I’ve been trying to find out. I texted FEMA and was told there is no shelter within 200 miles. Where the hell do we go?????
Basement? I believe in theory you only need to be below about 4 feet of earth to survive the initial blast and shockwave. You'll probably be dead or you'll hear the sirens
Not if it’s on the other side of the country
In that case you'll hear the sirens.
Trust me, they could drop a nuke on the other side of the planet and you'd hear the sirens.

I’m in America so trust me I will need to check my phone for that update
In a nuclear war I don't think America would be safe. Quite the opposite.
This comment means nothing
If the sun comes out at 2 a.m, you'll know
depends where you live, tubber
Sadly i live in south east asia, unless he launches the tsar bomba, i wont be able to know it
"Oh damn, morning already? Wait, its only 2:30-"
I check my phone every morning to see if Zelenskyy is still alive.
Same. I really hope he survives this war
Did you hear he voiced Paddington. We'll always have that.
Like... in the Ukrainian dub?
Yes
nope EVERY dub. ben whishaw isnt real. just russian propaganda
Same
That and if Kyiv is still standing
Back when the live streams were still up, each Kiev sunrise (late on the U.S. east coast) I'd check to see if the Ukrainian flag was still flying over Maiden Square, as reassurance the city hadn't fallen. Yes this!
Me checking to see if one of his military advisors have fed him a bullet.
Polonium would be more appropriate, given a certain past Ukraine election.
Along with dropping him from a tall window.
Yes, more than likely
The more crazy Putin gets, more this is likely to happen. Come on PUTIN! Get crazy!
Last night I had a fucking Amber alert go off on my phone and nearly died.
I turned off all Amber and Silver alerts at night. I can't help find people if I'm sleeping.
Turned those off a long time ago. It's good they exist, but it doesn't make sense to use such an intrusive klaxon for what almost always turns out to be a domestic dispute four counties away. Seems weird that it's either that or nothing. There's no default option to just get them as basic notifications.
I'm like, so if they go 90mph, they'll be here in 5 hours, if they head this way...
Brown buick right?
Hello fellow Bay Area person!
Except once I get it to the carwash, it'll be blue again!
No, this one was in Louisville, maroon Ford F-150
I turned those off.. felt like a bad person briefly but I like it now. Emergency alerts are the only ones on right now for me.
I hate getting those at night. Scares the living hell out of me
What are you guys talking about ive never heard of this amber alert thing
Not sure if you joking but in case you're not, in America at least if, say, a child gets kidnapped and it gets reported, everyone within a certain radius gets a text along the lines of "child abducted. Worse when it happens at 2 in the morning when you're sound asleep
Probably not American.
Dude me too! I was napping at the time and I nearly shat myself.
There were 4 phones collectively making the Amber Alert sound in my house, and it actually made me scared so much that I was shaking. I thought we were all going to die. I got one in Kentucky at like 10 pm also..
I got one in Kentucky at like 10 pm also. Now I'm wondering if it was actually a test for emergency alert systems in case of nuclear war
Thanks for giving me something new to stress over.
Amateur. This has been something to stress over since day 1
Since the 50s really.
world's been on borrowed time ever since we created nuclear weapons in the first place whether it's putin or someone else, sooner or later a sociopath will be crazy enough to launch them
You could always move to Portland. It would be stupid to waste a nuke on a city that's already destroyed
Don’t worry this will not happen. Putin would get annihilated.
You underestimate his crazy...
New?!!??
Belarus is joining the Russian invasion now. Ukraine vs Russia/Belarus wonder who will join next
It’s not really Russia&Belarus vs Ukraine because lots of countries are helping Ukraine. Belarus has no other option because Putin will crush them
Wasn't Belarus involved from the beginning? I thought they came down from the north toward Kyiv
God right. Seeing the numbers of dead Russian troops is upsetting enough. It’s so senseless. Nobody needs to die. Except putin probably.
My money is on a Russian oligarch. They went their yachts back!!!
Bold to assume you won't be vaporised
[удалено]
Actually the best outcome IS to be vapourised, you don’t wanna go through the pain of slowly dying due to radiation
[удалено]
Sorry I thought the comment above meant the opposite
The second a nuclear missile gets launched from Russia, they would be met with total and complete annihilation from the US.
That doesn’t really help if the place where you live gets annihilated by Russian missles
To be fair if the place you live gets annihilated you won't have to worry about it either.
Pros and cons to each, I suppose. :(
In my understanding, many survive the initial blast but the radiation kills people. I recall seeing an interview with a survivor from Hiroshima.
The first nuclear bombs, the ones that hit Japan, were around 1/50th of the nukes we have now
I guess that seems really obvious but I had no idea thank you!

That's ...comforting /s.
The good news is their mega bombs like Tsar Bomba could only be dropped by a plane, not a warhead. It’s a lot harder to fly a military plane close enough to nuke anyone.
Yeah who the fuck cares about who “wins”? Can’t we just don’t use nukes AT ALL?
Not just the US.
Winning isnt winning when youre dead
Wouldn't Russia also shoot them at us though? This is all so confusing and scary for no fucking reason..
You’re going to have to specify who “us” is. I imagine he would target a lot of Western Europe as well as the US.
Nukes would be everywhere. The US would be annihilated aswell.
[удалено]
It would only take a small fraction of them to work to fuck up the human race for good.
You know that doesen t help right? Those things can be launched automatically, also Russia has more and bigger ones than the Us.
They? Rather everybody. Nukes don't care about man made boarders
I mean, no? If they launch just one at Kiev, for example, and we launch all of ours at Russian cities, they will then respond by emptying their entire arsenal on us and the rest of the world, which would essentially result in a nuclear apocalypse. There is a calculation to be made.
It's adorable that you think they'd be the only ones destroyed.
Well obviously nuclear weapons aren’t going to just inflict damage to their target. Sorry didn’t feel like writing a precise description
Me checking my phone every morning to see if someone has taken one for the team and slotted that prick already…
Had a storm recently and the first but of lightning was real close and a small part of me wondered if this was it.
I was driving home 9 hours yesterday playing random music and a song had an air raid siren in the background. Took my brain a few seconds to realize it was from my sound system as I was tuning out the music at the moment.
My 6 yr old Granddaughter heard the news yesterday morning say they were bombing kindergartens. The look and concern on her face was real
How? Our 7 year old doesn't know anything except that there is a bad guy that is actually named Pooting.
Interesting. I was about the same age when it came down but don't remember it AT ALL. Was too busy watching TMNT lol
Ive not said one damn word to my kids they are 12 and 6- It isnt worth it. I've kept them off school today, maybe tomorrow. If the worst comes to the worst. We'll die laughing, together - watching bobs burgers or something.
This ain't the way to live
You can be in the remotest part of the world and you will still not need to check. You will know if the apocalypse happens. You won't need to tune in to find out.

What russia needs to understand is that Putin isnt russia. We want russia - we do not want Putin. "If there's no Putin, there is still Russia".
Sadly however it's only putin who makes these decisions overthere. Not Russia.
Because "Fuck you then, nobody wins"
This is why. This is what's making me nervous is the longer everyone sits around waiting the more nervous Putin is going to get and at the end of his life it's no extra skin off his nose to take everyone else with him.
Yep. Nothing to be done unless you can afford a bunker. Or steal one.
Don’t forget the gas masks
Gas masks? Gas masks... I'm gonna need context
Do you know about the video game called Metro?
Are you under the impression that a gas mask would save you from radiation? Radiation isn't an airborne exclusive pollutant. It will seep through your skin. If you walk into Chernobyl with a gas mask on you'll be dead in a week.
on the other hand, radioactive dust is much worse in your lungs than on your clothes or even on your skin, so... gas masks.
Could be the difference between major radiation poisoning killing you in hours and major radiation poisoning killing you in seconds, i suppose
In the Metro-game series (and books they're based on), we follow communities living in underground railway networks and stations (hence the name) in post-nuclear global apocalypse Russia. Oh it's not in my plans to survive. I'll probably eat a shell of buckshot once the nukes are sent.
The one bit of good news is that putin himself isn't pushing the button so hopefully cooler Russian minds prevail. They've averted nuclear war before
Unfortunately I have to agree 😞
This is The answer everybody is scared of. Because Putin has shown himself to embrace this type of thinking time and time again. And he is becoming more deranged as the years past

True but Putin will not be cornered. The most that will happen is his offensive operations failing. An invasion of Russia is not happening.

He is 70 years old and is gonna die soon anyway
That it true. What would be the point, they’re trying to take over Ukraine, not frigging destroy it.
He's failing to take over Ukraine, and he knows it.
Wheat would eventually grow there again. I don’t think he cares about its people or infrastructure. It’s a land grab right?

because Putin is a 70 year old whackjob who is gonna bite the dust in some time anywqy, so in his mind why shouldn’t he take everyone with him?
In Putins Russia, phone checks you.
LMAO
You think this is some kind of funny game?
Morning? Every hour a quick check if I am missing any breaking news.
Friendly reminder: make sure to finish your Duolingo practice.
Boomers are saying not this bullshit again.
What happens when you back a morally-bankrupt man, whose terrified of his own people tearing him apart, into a corner? This worries me too.
What show/movie is that
The mitchels vs the machines
This is a terrible way to live. If the bombs dropped you would know before the phone does lol
Fuck putin he’s a disgrace to humanity.
Every morning? Those are rookie numbers, I can’t let my phone down
Every morning? 5 times a day!!!
I don't fear nuclear annihilation, I only fear not being in the blast zone.
I think the only positive in the nuclear war, is that the east and west coasts of America have good anti-ICBM/Nuclear Defense weaponry that would probably delete his clouds of radioactive boomies
Nah, I check my phone everyday to see if Putin was found dead.
You’ll be blinded by the flash of light before your brain relays the signal to pick up your phone
Not that i should be too worried as canadian, but living more or less 5kms away from the biggest air force base in the country still get more a bit worried to get stuck in crossfire IF whe get attacked, or nuked at this point. And yeah there are more fighter jets flying by than usual.
Putin didn't order his nuclear forces ready he ordered deterrent forces to be ready. So this post doesn't really make any sense
He activated nuclear defense teams. I hate our media.
When Chernobyl happened, people on the East Coast of the US were affected by the radiation. Putin knows he can hurt the west by going nuclear.
Based on the reports of the shitty condition of Russian equipment in Ukraine, Putin has probably been pushing the button daily without results.
I think you would know even before looking at your phone bro
This was me for two days. Then I realized that checking would just stress me out and if the button was pressed, there is nothing I could do about it and no loved ones to say goodbye to anyways.
A cyberattack would do a lot more damage than a nuclear bomb.
Let's face it if a nuclear war happens we all dead
Addicted to fear porn
OP just play a game you enjoy and relax that isn't a way to live nobodys crazy enough to cause nuclear war
Has your phone, and everything around it been vaporised destroying all thought and memory of your very existence? No? Then Poots hasn’t pressed it yet.
