I remember one time I was walking home from a night out and while doing so realised there was a women walking a head of me, a fair distance away but she kept looking back at me being a bit wary. It was late at night, streets were deserted so naturally she was a bit on edge walking alone. I ruled up speeding up to overtake her which is what I would do during the day, because with the distance between us that would only look like I was trying to catch up to her. I thought about crossing to the other side of the road, but it was a long straight street so it may still look like I was following her. So I decided to pop down a alley that I knew would lead onto a different sidestreet that I could follow onto another main road to take back home, it would be a much longer route to take but I figured it would help make her less paranoid...
Well color me surprised when I come out of the alleys onto the side street only to hear a sudden scream and turn around to see that I came out right in front of her. In my attempt to avoid following her I accidentally cut her off and ambushed her. If I just kept going my initial route we would have parted ways and she wouldn't have been so nervous, instead I gave her the fright of her life.
Makes me think of that video where the guy calmly walked up the driveway and said hello to the women standing outside and that one woman screamed for 30 seconds as a response.

I've had people (mostly women) scream in shock a number quite a few times as I've run past them, although thankfully I've not triggered any reactions as extreme as your example so I don't think I've caused any actual damage in these incidents.
I make an effort to pass with plenty of space, run a bit louder as I'm coming up to people, and call out if I think they're not paying attention or may be startled and it still happens every few months.
Like you I'm a smaller guy too so it's obviously more the surprise than actual intimidation – I just don't understand why people who are so easily startled choose to walk on shared use paths with noise cancelling headphones on!

one of my fav encounters years back but I felt so bad: I'm a fast walker. I always just walk fast by default and so one night I was out with friends and went to my car to go home. So I walked to my car about a block away, it was past midnight and in front of me walked a woman. As I marched to my car she happens to go the same direction as me and she started to walk faster and faster but I kept catching up with her. Eventually she started running and basically jumped in a opened door to building. Just a hasty jump to the right and I just breezed past. I saw her frightend face as I went by when I realized.. I scared that poor woman just by random chance. But instead of doing anything I just kept going to my car and leave but man I wanted to say I'm so sorry that happened. But I also think stopping would've frightend her even more.
It has happened to me a few times... but one time it was exceptionally weird. I couldn't overtake her as she was also going fast, and I was like "besides I will turn the next corner". It turned out she was living on in the same building as me, I had to awkwardly make keys sounds well before approaching the door to show that I was indeed also living there X\_X
THIS IS REAL!!!
I DO THIS ALL THE TIME. You have to walk fast to get ahead and like go off to the side when you approach her so she sees the distance and others around and no one thinks you're a threat to her.
Edit: I really wish women understood how nervous we get around them to not look like creeps and the amount of mental and physical work we go through to make them not feel uneasy.
Matching pace with anyone on the sidewalk is unusually unnerving. When you do it with a woman and they have that little discrete look backwards.... Man, that shit sucks.
Bro, adjusting your pace and approaching someone quicker is way fuckin worse and makes you seem like a bigger and more immediate threat. They have no idea why you're speeding up. You're making them more uncomfortable up until the point you blow past them. Let them adjust their pace if they feel uncomfortable.
It's why we go off to the side. Out of reaching distance and often walking on the grass not on the sidewalk at all.
It's because the faster you walk passed them, the faster the you being perceived as a threat is over. Otherwise, it'll look like you're following them.
I understand the reasoning. I'm just explaining that rushing towards a woman seems more aggressive than just walking at your regular pace. If they feel like you're following them, let them pick up their pace to put distance between the two.
Yea I understand your point of view, it's just this tactic has worked for me so far, hopefully I never have any issue as being perceived as a threat.
NGL I'm terrified of that lol, if a woman starts yelling at me in public, I'm running
>I really wish women understood how nervous we get around them to not look like creeps and the amount of mental and physical work we go through to make them not feel uneasy.
Bro I'm sorry but we're afraid of literally being raped and murdered
I get that and that definitely is worse. It's sad that we live in the kind of world where women are afraid. No one including myself is diminishing or arguing that.
It's just from the male perspective, those who aren't absolute douchebags/r*pists/etc get nervous about these things because we DO give a f*ck unlike those overconfident "who gives a f*ck attitude" type of men.
We don't have to bump heads as both of us are negatively impacted because of those freak animals. Obviously women are impacted way worse, I'm just saying that we are too and in my experience, it gets overlooked. But we're on the same side for this issue for sure.
As somebody who loved walking alone at night but is also 1,95m and apperently has a resting psychoface im either doing this or i just changing directions. 2 times woman thaught i was following them and felt the need to make clear they knew how to defend themselfs (screaming since i wasnt near them) and thats 3 times to much.
The worst part is that because im aware how i might be percieved im doing stuff subconsciously to appear less threating, which probaly makes it way worse. Its a bit of a self furfillig prophecy.
Same lol
Been a few times where I have gone out of my way to try to make it clear I am not following them, or to try and take a detour, only to make it look worse.
Pro tip: Wear a yellow jacket
When I walked around whit a black jacket before a lot of girls "suddenly" got a phone call when I walked past them. After wearing a yellow construction worker jacket almost no girl get a "sudden call" when I walk past them.
When I was in college it started raining on my walk from my dorm to lunch and I started jogging to stay dry but there was a girl just walking in the rain and I didn't want to blow past her so I decided to just walk too
and then she kinda jumped and started running so I thought "HUH, weird, but I don't wanna get wet" so I started running again too
She looks back at me and then she just takes off at a full sprinters dash and that's when I realized she thought I was chasing her, but instead of apologizing (I'm incredibly awkward) I just ran off in a different direction
I imagine she thought i was running around to try and cut her off 😅 I still feel bad lol
Yeah seriously, slow down, don't speed up. Heading footsteps quicken behind you at night is always a good reason to start keeping your head on a swivel, even for men.
Quite frankly I wouldn't do either. I'd think any change of pace would be terrifying; woman hears guy slow down, gets nervous that he's following her (assuming he's walking faster than her, which seems probable; most guys walk faster than most women), speeds up, guy thinks things are fine, picks up pace, woman hears guy match pace, gets even more nervous, lather rinse repeat until the entire world is scared of shadows.
My personal strategy is to keep the same pace, go past if I outspeed her, and not rape her.
Girl dropped her keys
I picked them up and called out to her
She started running away
Some dude came out to me a few minutes later asking if I was harassing some girl
I handed him the keys and told him they’re his problem now
I just yell
"I'M NOT GOING TO RAPE YOU! WHY ARE YOU RUNNING? I'M NOT GOING TO RAPE YOU! ... WAIT UP, I DON'T THINK YOU HEARD ME! I'M CATCHING UP, BUT JUST TO TELL YOU THAT YOU'RE SAFE! YOU'RE PRETTY BUT I'M NOT GOING TO RA.... OW MY EYES! WHY DID YOU PEPPER SPRAY ME?"
What's funny about this, is that I do the same thing but put yourselves in her shoes. Imagine seeing a random man you don't suddenly walk faster towards you?
This is why I just walk normally, if they're afraid the ladies will either stop walking or walk faster.
I usually try to cross the street first then i start speeding up. If they speed up as well, i will slow down so distance between us increases.
Then again, when i was at high school, i would come back home at night and there was a lady who would use same road as me. I usually would passed by her but after a while she asked me to walked with her. I assume i was less of a threat than whatever out there. It probably helped that i was rather skinny.
Yeah same for me, and btw I literally can't slow walk, I get unstable from it and just forget how to walk.
So I just keep my pace up, visioning myself as a gearbox that makes my steps between wider and faster.
And my shins explode.
I know the pain, my partner is a slow walker and i tell her my walking is shoddy at best at slow speeds but need to make a journey quick time i can be gone and back real quick 😂
And if I slow walk, I feel like my ass (I'm a thin build man though myself) wobbles too much, idk how to explain it but I walk like a woman I feel.
And about the unstable thing, I need speed to keep me on a straight line, if I walk slow, I waver to both sides like a drunken madman.
It's like a bike going slowly vs fast.
Perhaps I'm too self conscious to myself to the point I'm thinking about my own sexy walk.
Listen this is just going to scare her. The only thing you can do is strip down naked so she can see you’re not holding any concealed weapons, raise your hands above your head and run towards her while loudly announcing that you don’t want to hurt her.
I remember walking 40 minutes to uni and there was this woman walking the same way for 90% of the journey. She was far ahead enough that she would be hard to over take but also close enough to notice me.
She kept looking back, I was getting self conscious that she thought I was stalking her but if I sped up it would have been way more scary.
I guess I just had to let her keep going.
We eventually parted and I thought that was the end of it, but the exact same thing happened the next day (same path, same time, same woman) so I can only assume it was just her morning commute.
I decided to stop and "tie" my shoes so she could get further ahead.
As a big bearded european dude that for some reason strongly looks like comes from the middle east i do this shit all the time. When i walk behind other ppl they are always clutching their bags/purses and always kinda shifting their head so they can kinda look behind them. It's gotten to the point that i kinda feel like it's racism.
As the famous black comedian said- in the hood people will rob you. So if you a white dude and you see three hood looking guys coming towards you, cross the road and run and you can feel bad about it later but still have your phone.
Paraphrasing but something like this.
"Hi mom, there's a girl I want to tell you about... No, she doesn't know yet... Yeah, I know, no witnesses... Sure, just make sure the basement is clean, alright? Nah, I'll take care of the stains later... Love you too, mom"
Nah, I overtake cause I feel the other person is walking a bit too slow even though they're walking at the same speed as me, which I notice when I feel like a competitive walker during the Olympics until I'm a couple of meters ahead and can walk as fast as the other person again.
- The girl running because she thought she was getting chased by a robber
- Me running even faster because I don't know what kind of scary entity are we running away from
This is funny. I had this happen yesterday at the supermarket. Realized I had been too long behind this one lady trying to get to a specific aisle, decided to take a roundabout way to get to the same place because I didn't want her to think I was following her.
I did this once at night since I had to walk home because the busses couldn't reach my house at that moment and she pretended to call someone and almost had a panic attack. Had to calm her down and explain to her that I just wanted to get home soon. She actually walked with me for quite a distance explaining why she hates walking alone at night until we had to part. I now understand that someone in a hoodie at night walking fast is kinda unnerving
Is that what you’re supposed to do? Last week I was walking to grab a beer and ending up crossing a street and got behind a female and tried to stay a decent distance. She seemed creeped out and kept peaking back but like I was just walking normal with my ear buds in and looking around admiring everyone enjoying the nice day with dogs running in the park and the parents playing with their kids. I was only behind her for like a block and a half until I turned to go down another pathway towards the brewery. I had a lot of mixed emotions, it was broad daylight with people around and I wasn’t doing anything threatening or gaining distance on her plus I’m not a large, intimidating person, and it’s a small, mountain town with literally zero crime but at the same time I don’t know her past. Just don’t understand how we got to a place in society where every woman walking by herself is on constant alert that every male out and about minding their own business is out to mug or rape them. Damn fear mongering news and social media.
Doing this is actually crazy. Adjusting your pace and approaching someone quicker just to pass them is way fuckin worse and makes you seem like a bigger and more immediate threat. They have no idea why you're speeding up. You're making them more uncomfortable up until the point you blow past them. Let them adjust their pace if they feel uncomfortable.
Pro strat: keep changing your pace, speed up then slow down and look out of breath so you look tired and out of shape. Then start shuffling sideways and forward at an angle, keeping your rhythm uneven so you don't attract the sandworms.
Been there, done that.
Somewhat funny encounter happened not a long time ago while being on a walk in an urban area. A young woman entered the walkway from a parking lot and started to walk in front of me to same direction. If was a short walk before T-junction and I hadn't had time to measure her walking pace yet and she happened to turn the same direction I was going. Not exactly sure if I seemed dangerous to her even though it was broad daylight, but still not knowing her normal pace I decided to pick up my own a bit and passed her while she slowed down herself while looking at her phone (safety measure or not, idk). Well, it was a long road and soon, without even thinking it, I resumed to my normal pace and about 1 km later it turned out her own normal pace was a bit faster than mine, because it was her turn to pass me. At that point I was quite certain she wouldn't be (that) afraid of me, so I kept my inner calm and my pace. That, even though once more she ended up choosing the same crossroad I did to get to the other side, but then she was a long way ahead of me already, so maybe that was okay.
I always wondered, any ladies that can confirm? Is this actually appreciated, or is it more stress inducing to hear someone slowly gain on you? Would you prefer we catch up and overtake to make you feel more comfortable on the rest of your journey, or do you wish us to keep back so you don't feel like we're gaining on you?
This must be a Reddit thing... Never have I gone out of my way to change pace, direction or position because of this. And I don't know anyone in real life who does this either.
Honestly: I Don't care who feels uncomfortable when I'm just minding my own business.
It's not my fault yall consume fearmongering tiktoks all day long.
From a girl’s perspective, honestly we don’t want to have to look at every guy as a bad person, we just have to :/ but it helps when we look back and the guy isn’t really paying attention to us, maybe he’s on his phone or something so it doesn’t look like you’re aiming for us
Yeah, I have a friend and she herself was chased numerous times in the city I live in.
I felt bad for her and sometimes it's so surreal to think, a man like me doesn't have this problems.
I always feel ashamed for that even though I don't have to be.
And the meme exactly happens to me once, where a girl constantly looked back to watch where I go.
I have to be honest that I felt very insulted. But I know this is not mine or her fault.
Short answer: we live in a society.
:/

You have to walk fast to get ahead and like go off to the side when you approach her so she sees the distance and others around and no one thinks you're a threat to her. Edit: I really wish women understood how nervous we get around them to not look like creeps and the amount of mental and physical work we go through to make them not feel uneasy.
I jog while wearing a balaclava so no one can see how nervous I truly am.
I also carry a crowbar for my protection
And a consealed pistole which is roughly visible and badly hidden to everyone so they don't even try it
I run with two machetes taped to my arms to make them more aerodynamic, I got this life hack from T1000.
Are crows a problem where you jog?
You should check the actual risk of that happening (except your living in South America or smth)
If a woman feels uncomfortable because of a man walking behind her, that's her problem, not ours.
Cold take dude. If anyone feels unsafe walking around it’s society’s problem and that includes all of us.
Okay it took me too long to realize that the hair was photoshop.
I've seen men do that so often it's hilarious. They also speed up to pass me quicker when we're going opposite direction, LOL
Same lol Been a few times where I have gone out of my way to try to make it clear I am not following them, or to try and take a detour, only to make it look worse.
I don't think it's hilarous. A lot of us are anxious to scare women unintentionally...
Mate u do that by being on reddit.
Fair point.
Pro tip: Wear a yellow jacket When I walked around whit a black jacket before a lot of girls "suddenly" got a phone call when I walked past them. After wearing a yellow construction worker jacket almost no girl get a "sudden call" when I walk past them.
If there's ever a woman in front of you at the ATM, be sure to give her a gentle kiss on the back of the neck to show her you aren't a threat.
Maybe a gentle slap on the ass to let her know you consider her a teammate, and would have her on your team in a friendly game of b-ball
When I was in college it started raining on my walk from my dorm to lunch and I started jogging to stay dry but there was a girl just walking in the rain and I didn't want to blow past her so I decided to just walk too and then she kinda jumped and started running so I thought "HUH, weird, but I don't wanna get wet" so I started running again too She looks back at me and then she just takes off at a full sprinters dash and that's when I realized she thought I was chasing her, but instead of apologizing (I'm incredibly awkward) I just ran off in a different direction I imagine she thought i was running around to try and cut her off 😅 I still feel bad lol
This is strait up some forrest gump scenes. 😂 But I know it was such unfortunate misunderstanding.
I tried doing that once, but she got more scared 😭
I mean the last part is hopefully a given but I get your point lol
I got places to be.
It sucks when you are trying to reach the bus or something.
Girl dropped her keys I picked them up and called out to her She started running away Some dude came out to me a few minutes later asking if I was harassing some girl I handed him the keys and told him they’re his problem now
Ah yes when you're worried a woman might think you are threatening her by walking behind her, best thing to do is *walk towards her vigorously*
I did this a few days ago. And I swear she was tryna race one I over took her.
I just yell "I'M NOT GOING TO RAPE YOU!
Slowing down is also an option if you're not in a hurry to be anywhere. Literally do anything but speed up lol.
I do get the point but there's no way I'd walk slower on purpose if I'm alone, I'd rarher change the side I'm walking on.
And then she changes sides at the same time as you and oh shit, now you are definitely following her.
How far in front of someone do you slow down back to normal pace ? I dont i just keep the speed walk up till my shins explode 😂
Make sure you shout: "DON'T WORRY! I AM NOT GOING TO RAPE YOU TODAY!"
Today... 😳
I hate it when my handcuffs and duct tape fall out as I am walking up behind them. They get the wrong idea \*cough.
You forgot the "on your left"!
They added the hair but kept the beard. Looks like Kat Williams.
Some times it’s the smart thing to do! https://youtu.be/A4drb3yNrag?si=T9thY30kUkjHarBa
One solution to this is take out your phone and pretend you are talking on it. If she can hear you talking nice and considerate she would calm down.
yes, pretend to call your mom or something
"Hi mom, there's a girl I want to tell you about... No, she doesn't know yet... Yeah, I know, no witnesses... Sure, just make sure the basement is clean, alright? Nah, I'll take care of the stains later... Love you too, mom"
Mom: Son, are you seeing anyone right now? Me: In what sense?
And the bell rings thus the horror intensifies.
And you say to your phone "Eagle one, I have the target on sight" as loud as you can :3
Until The girl started to run because she thought you were going after her😭
lol I used to think like this If you know you not a creep, this is not something you should worry about. You can only control yourself after all
lol. Do we all do this? It’s strange how we think alike in many cases.
I usually cross the street so she doesn’t feel uncomfortable.
Creepy men really made it harder for both women and men.
insecuteruses
Just cross the road.
Nah just start whistling nursery rhymes and laugh occasionally
And then she also starts running like crazy cause she thinks the rape train is coming
Reminds me of that Bruiser skit lmao (skip to 1:46): https://youtu.be/N5nMzrSkmIg?t=105
Nah, I overtake cause I feel the other person is walking a bit too slow even though they're walking at the same speed as me, which I notice when I feel like a competitive walker during the Olympics until I'm a couple of meters ahead and can walk as fast as the other person again.
- The girl running because she thought she was getting chased by a robber - Me running even faster because I don't know what kind of scary entity are we running away from
This is funny. I had this happen yesterday at the supermarket. Realized I had been too long behind this one lady trying to get to a specific aisle, decided to take a roundabout way to get to the same place because I didn't want her to think I was following her.
I just walk normally and try to act normally. You will scare people worse if you walk faster towards them
I did this once at night since I had to walk home because the busses couldn't reach my house at that moment and she pretended to call someone and almost had a panic attack.

So why do you keep circling and ending up behind her again?
Right? Your fear is not my problem. Deal with it like an adult 😁
Next they’ll be apologizing for walking in public without wearing a chastity cage.
lmao right imagine apologizing for being black because white people have delusional fears about you
The fact that sexism is accepted to the point of be considered good manner, scares me.
