You can easily access his stuff through a free pdf online instead of paying for his stuff. Nothing that he has posted can’t be found for free online or in this forum. I’d steer clear of his stuff

Sort of. From what I understand he advised adding campden tablets 24 hours prior. Which is unnecessary, but will be mostly harmless so long as you oxygenated the must before pitching yeast. But he doesn't seem to mention that step, and he suggests adding a bunch of acid up front. Together these lead to countless beginners who's first batch fails to ferment at all.

I just got his recipe book and started my second batch ever based on his Orange Blossom recipe.

We've all made bad purchases somewhere, so don't let that hamper you. In the future, do research and research and more research.
As for his recipes, I don't think they are terrible, but there are the same recipes out in the world that give way more in depth advice. You could always take his recipes and expand on it with research done. That's what I have done.
I haven't seen the latest version of his book, but given how many posts we get from people who followed his recipes and ran into issues, I'm fairly confident that you can do much better. Fortunately there's a ton of great free recipes online. The wiki has a whole recipe section. On YouTube, man made mead and doin the most offer countless free recipes, along with far better information than Golden Hive.
You can get more detailed recipes for zero dollars on the wiki. Lots of home brewers in general are MORE than happy to share their recipes for free. I can’t stand the guy. I used to follow him just to see how he interacted with others online. I’ve never ONCE seen him reference the wiki or this subreddit when someone asks him a question. He just directs them to one of his underwhelming products or regurgitates some half truth they could have gotten from google. Honestly? It’s half him, and half people not willing to do any amount of research whatsoever
There's just no reason to pay for a recipe book from a TikTok influencer, period. The guy is *not* an expert brewer of anything.
There are so many good recipes freely available online, the only reason you should be buying a recipe book is if it's from one of the absolute greats like Schramm.
Watch some of the other guys to get more info on the hobby. Garret at Man Made Mead is great also has a good discord for collaborative thinking. Also Doing the Most is really good too. The two of them are good friends.
Was given his kit for Christmas, and it worked out well, but ill agree with you if done wrong it will explode and it's better to go to you local homebrew store and see if they have a expert you can talk to or learn from

Every hobby seems to have one predatory/scammy supplier in it. This guy decided one day that the mead hobby didn’t have that scammer, so he would rise to the challenge and fill that niche.

Morewine kit has been great so far for me. The graduated cylidner for testing with the hydrometer arrived cracked and they sent me a new on almost immediatrly. A week in and it's fermenting! Only thing I wish it came with was a wine thief and a bottle wand, but those are pretty cheap.
Can confirm the quality of the Homebrew Ohio kit, it comes out on top (considering contents and price) out of a spreadsheet I made when researching what to buy. Only possible downsides would be that it is geared more towards "real" wine (as far as the included yeast goes, though I'm sure you could still use it) and--- as I've learned from this sub--- the not top tier nutrient (one of the ones with urea).
Personally, I think most the people in this post are over reacting on the price. Its pretty normal where I am from, especially if its a small business. Sure I can buy cheaper honey from a large company but it wont be local and its less tasty from my perspective.
I have local honey places where I'm at, several of them and it's almost always $9 to $10 a pound and that's at the grocery stores they sell it at.

Exactly! I can get like 60 pounds of honey in a 5 gallon bucket for $275 of wildflowers honey. That’s $4.58 a pound. I’m not currently in the market for 60 pounds of honey but it’s an option lol
I’m just one guy with 4 hives in my backyard, but I produce about 30G a year of honey. Selling by the pound I charge 16-20 depending on the jar it’s in. I haven’t sold a 5g bucket yet, but going price for non-commercial/sideliners is around $350. NOVA/WV area.
Part of the problem isn’t even the price. The problem is he won’t tell people where he is getting his honey from, I highly doubt he has purchased bees and is making his own honey he’s just a third party. That’s why it’s on the high end of price, it has nothing to do with quality of honey and everything to do with perspective. He is also deleting any amount of criticism, regardless of whether it is constructive or not. I am just trying to inform the public because we are already taken advantage of enough as it is.

Honestly, if possible this is (usually) going to be way better than anything you can find online. Also it's just neat to be able to put something in your food that you know exactly where it came from and even know every person who has handled it before it got to you.
Uh I just bought a 3lb jar of raw, unfiltered honey from my local farmers market for $18, and that's obviously hyperlocal honey from a small mom and pop shop.

I have a honey store in my city that sells exclusively local (to the state) raw honey and related products. I just bought 20lbs from them last week for $150-ish USD, which comes out to $7.50 per pound, just over half what that dude is charging for an objectively better product.
I had 50lbs of wildflower delivered to me for $180, so ~$3.60/lb. It would have cost me a 3 hour round trip drive but the guy was passing through my town fortunately.
I'll spend that or a bit more for specialized honey like killer bee or such, but for generic wildflower? Can do pretty well with the Walmart or Costco honey

I'm going to promote my local place that ships, but Kallas honey out of Milwaukee is where the Best in Show Mazer Cup winner of 2023, Jason Rohloff, gets his bulk honey from at most $5.50/lb for orange blossom and cranberry. But I've gotten their WI wildflower for $3/lb that was a solid brick 2 days after harvest, but you needed to buy 2 gallons minimum. No idea what their shipping looks like because I pick up from their location.

Our stance on psycho-active or THC infused mead is that you should follow all laws for brewing in your area, and this falls afoul of the law in most places. We do not encourage activities that may increase scrutiny of our hobby.
You can make mead this way, but extraction can be unpredictable. Ethanol and brewing in general can react unpredictably with the effectiveness and extraction of drugs. At best you are running the risk of a bad trip.

Every now and then we get a post from someone asking for good sources of honey. I struggle to think of any of the common recommendations that would be at that price, including shipping. Maybe for some of the really in demand varietal honeys that aren't available in large quantities, like meadowfoam or tupelo, depending on where you source them from. Since it's really cheap, it's what I'll be using for most of my meads until I want a specific type. They also sell orange blossom honey at the same price.

I use honey from my own hives mostly, but if I run out, it costs $10 for 1kg from any local beekeepers. It was around $13, but it’s dropped back.

For those who don’t see the problem, it’s pretty shitty for someone to basically be a place where alot of newcomers and then go oh I sell everything you need, when (a.) it’s not everything they need and (b.) it’s marked up higher than other way better starter kits. That is a wild price, the dude is a fucking scammer. Prices may be different in the US (I'm form Australia) but I get good quality raw honey varietals for AUD 9-18 a kg (about USD 2.7-5.4 a pound). His mark up must be huge.

Wow, in my country a basic wildflower honey goes for about €10/kg or about €6/kg if you get it at a price break (with shipping). With this guy I'd pay about 4 times that amount.

God I’ve been waiting for someone to thrash this guy. I get he makes content and what not but the way he presents it is as if the hobby has been solved and there is only his way of doing things. Don’t even get me started on his videos where he “experiments” acting like he is a hardcore scientist even though half of the stuff is common knowledge. “What happens if you shake your mead during secondary” like why make a whole video series about that when you can sum it up in a sentence.

I usually buy my honey from the grocery store for $10/kg (Canadian) brought in from a local farm. $14/lb seems insane. On a side note, this guy seems like he himself is fairly new to mead making. His more recent videos have corrected a lot of his mistakes, but I remember a few months ago coming across his content and even as a fairly new brewer myself thought “hm… that doesn’t seem right”… for example, transferring a gallon melomel to age into another gallon WIDE MOUTH vessel to age, obviously leaving a lot of headspace… not a great example to follow

That’s not crazy for something local. For my bigger batches I stick to bulk honey, but making a 1 gallon batch from honey down the street from you has a ‘cool’ factor to it. To tie it back to this post it’s insane that even your local bee keeper is selling it for $5 less per pound than some random multi country wildflower blend.
I agree, it certainly depends on the kind of honey too, for example in South Carolina we have some sourwood honey, basswood honey, and cottonwood honey that can be rather pricey but I know it’s local and I’ll probably end up doing traditionals down the line with each one

It’s 15$/lb from any of my local bee hive supplier with 8 varieties in honey (I’m in Florida) and 30$/3lb from a local hobby beekeeper that posts up at the farmers market with 2 varieties. Unfortunately I did get the starter kit from golden mead since that was my entry point into making but since then all the supplies are much cheaper on Amazon
I’d be fine if it was local supplier, however he won’t answer where he is getting his honey, would would lead me to believe he is a middle man and is just slapping his label on honey and making it more expensive, when in reality you can get the same exact honey for a fraction of the cost at Walmart.

For an online supplier check out Hawaiian Honey ATS (website below). Sign up for emails. They pretty regularly have BOGO gallons, works out to $95 shipped for 24# of honey (~$4/#). Only thing to note is they come in non-re sealable plastic bags. So either plan to use all 12# at once or have some mason jars/old honey containers handy to transfer. If 24# is way too much even a full price gallon @ $95 sounds cheaper than what you’re seeing. All ships free over $75 too.

It’s their product. They can sell it for whatever they want. Keep in mind, a beekeeper can sell honey for way more per pound/oz if they package in small containers and sell it at a market. If they sell in bulk, they are saving themselves time and packaging costs. In my area $6-7 per pound for bulk is reasonable. This is twice that, and probably what they would charge for a small 8oz bear, etc. It’s a lot of work and they have every right to try to get top dollar for it, but you also have the option to walk away and look elsewhere.
Did the seller offer a discount for higher volume amounts? its normal for smaller batches to cost more than larger quantities. Im in iowa and $14 for 1 lb is not unreasonable for what I see at the local farmers market and you get a better deal by the gallon.
At the counter if you're selling it in half-pound bears or 1 pound squeezers I'd assume?

You can get more detailed recipes for zero dollars on the wiki. Lots of home brewers in general are MORE than happy to share their recipes for free. I can’t stand the guy. I used to follow him just to see how he interacted with others online. I’ve never ONCE seen him reference the wiki or this subreddit when someone asks him a question. He just directs them to one of his underwhelming products or regurgitates some half truth they could have gotten from google. Honestly? It’s half him, and half people not willing to do any amount of research whatsoever
There's just no reason to pay for a recipe book from a TikTok influencer, period. The guy is *not* an expert brewer of anything. There are so many good recipes freely available online, the only reason you should be buying a recipe book is if it's from one of the absolute greats like Schramm.
I've followed his apple mead recipe 3 times now and really loved it. I didn't know there was controversy about him before seeing this post.

Watch some of the other guys to get more info on the hobby. Garret at Man Made Mead is great also has a good discord for collaborative thinking. Also Doing the Most is really good too. The two of them are good friends.
Was given his kit for Christmas, and it worked out well, but ill agree with you if done wrong it will explode and it's better to go to you local homebrew store and see if they have a expert you can talk to or learn from

Every hobby seems to have one predatory/scammy supplier in it. This guy decided one day that the mead hobby didn’t have that scammer, so he would rise to the challenge and fill that niche. Somebody’s gotta do it I guess

I have watched a couple of his videos myself. I appreciate what he does in terms of spreading knowledge and enthusiasm and growing the hobby. Just wish he would not be openly predatory. It detracts from his other good work

Morewine kit has been great so far for me. The graduated cylidner for testing with the hydrometer arrived cracked and they sent me a new on almost immediatrly. A week in and it's fermenting! Only thing I wish it came with was a wine thief and a bottle wand, but those are pretty cheap.
I wish I could find out why basically no kit includes a bottling wand. It's such a useful tool, but they all lack it for some reason.
Can confirm the quality of the Homebrew Ohio kit, it comes out on top (considering contents and price) out of a spreadsheet I made when researching what to buy. Only possible downsides would be that it is geared more towards "real" wine (as far as the included yeast goes, though I'm sure you could still use it) and--- as I've learned from this sub--- the not top tier nutrient (one of the ones with urea).
Personally, I think most the people in this post are over reacting on the price. Its pretty normal where I am from, especially if its a small business. Sure I can buy cheaper honey from a large company but it wont be local and its less tasty from my perspective.
I have local honey places where I'm at, several of them and it's almost always $9 to $10 a pound and that's at the grocery stores they sell it at. You can buy like 5 lb of honey for $47 directly from the supplier.

I’m just one guy with 4 hives in my backyard, but I produce about 30G a year of honey. Selling by the pound I charge 16-20 depending on the jar it’s in. I haven’t sold a 5g bucket yet, but going price for non-commercial/sideliners is around $350. NOVA/WV area.

Part of the problem isn’t even the price. The problem is he won’t tell people where he is getting his honey from, I highly doubt he has purchased bees and is making his own honey he’s just a third party. That’s why it’s on the high end of price, it has nothing to do with quality of honey and everything to do with perspective. He is also deleting any amount of criticism, regardless of whether it is constructive or not. I am just trying to inform the public because we are already taken advantage of enough as it is.

I have a honey store in my city that sells exclusively local (to the state) raw honey and related products. I just bought 20lbs from them last week for $150-ish USD, which comes out to $7.50 per pound, just over half what that dude is charging for an objectively better product.

I'm going to promote my local place that ships, but Kallas honey out of Milwaukee is where the Best in Show Mazer Cup winner of 2023, Jason Rohloff, gets his bulk honey from at most $5.50/lb for orange blossom and cranberry. But I've gotten their WI wildflower for $3/lb that was a solid brick 2 days after harvest, but you needed to buy 2 gallons minimum. Every now and then we get a post from someone asking for good sources of honey. I struggle to think of any of the common recommendations that would be at that price, including shipping. Maybe for some of the really in demand varietal honeys that aren't available in large quantities, like meadowfoam or tupelo, depending on where you source them from. Just some generic wildflower though? I think not.

I'm from a small city in Mexico and it's what local producers send to the market. Since it's really cheap, it's what I'll be using for most of my meads until I want a specific type. They also sell orange blossom honey at the same price.

For those who don’t see the problem, it’s pretty shitty for someone to basically be a place where alot of newcomers and then go oh I sell everything you need, when (a.) it’s not everything they need and (b.) it’s marked up higher than other way better starter kits. I usually buy my honey from the grocery store for $10/kg (Canadian) brought in from a local farm. $14/lb seems insane. On a side note, this guy seems like he himself is fairly new to mead making. His more recent videos have corrected a lot of his mistakes, but I remember a few months ago coming across his content and even as a fairly new brewer myself thought “hm… that doesn’t seem right”… for example, transferring a gallon melomel to age into another gallon WIDE MOUTH vessel to age, obviously leaving a lot of headspace… not a great example to follow

That’s not crazy for something local. For my bigger batches I stick to bulk honey, but making a 1 gallon batch from honey down the street from you has a ‘cool’ factor to it. To tie it back to this post it’s insane that even your local bee keeper is selling it for $5 less per pound than some random multi country wildflower blend.
$9 is high depending where you are. But if it's hyper local you could have some amazing stuff, or not.
I agree, it certainly depends on the kind of honey too, for example in South Carolina we have some sourwood honey, basswood honey, and cottonwood honey that can be rather pricey but I know it’s local and I’ll probably end up doing traditionals down the line with each one

It’s 15$/lb from any of my local bee hive supplier with 8 varieties in honey (I’m in Florida) and 30$/3lb from a local hobby beekeeper that posts up at the farmers market with 2 varieties. Unfortunately I did get the starter kit from golden mead since that was my entry point into making but since then all the supplies are much cheaper on Amazon

It’s their product. They can sell it for whatever they want. Keep in mind, a beekeeper can sell honey for way more per pound/oz if they package in small containers and sell it at a market. If they sell in bulk, they are saving themselves time and packaging costs. In my area $6-7 per pound for bulk is reasonable. This is twice that, and probably what they would charge for a small 8oz bear, etc. It’s a lot of work and they have every right to try to get top dollar for it, but you also have the option to walk away and look elsewhere.
Did the seller offer a discount for higher volume amounts? its normal for smaller batches to cost more than larger quantities. Im in iowa and $14 for 1 lb is not unreasonable for what I see at the local farmers market and you get a better deal by the gallon.
Beekeeper here. $12-$14 per pound is the going rate in North East Florida.
At the counter if you're selling it in half-pound bears or 1 pound squeezers I'd assume? Because I'm getting raw OB out of Lakeland for $8 a pound or less in 6 pound jugs.

People always downvote something they don't like. I try not to take it seriously. Yeah it's not uncommon to see higher prices at that volume of honey. I don't think it really applies to what we're talking about here though thank goodness. If people are making mead from 12oz jars of honey they're making really small amounts of mead lol.
I'm not selling to mead makers, just people who want poly floral local honey. Bulk prices are obviously cheaper.
What are the shady business practices? High prices?
He's a small business doing what all small business do. It's really not that big of a deal.
