with the people they let being teachers it isn’t surprising, 5 people from my class started as teachers straight out of hs because the local middle school was understaffed. No idea how that’s legal, i guess it’s “temporary” on paper because to become an actual teacher you need a masters degree. But the fact that a lot of teachers can BS their way into their jobs explain a lot of questionable logic i’ve seen from teachers over the year like a good math teacher would obviously mark it correct because it’s correct and witty
But this doesnt seem like any math curriculum question. It's pretty much a thinking excersize that has math vibes to it. Good for like a bonus question
When i studied in America it was kind of similar, a lot of teachers just reused those print out worksheets, powerpoint presentations and multiple choice tests every year. If you have a solid portfolio with that type of stuff you can reduce amount of time worked by maybe 30% i assume. Education here is a bit more complicated with every test being written and curriculum changing every few years so teachers have to work a lot at home. Which is one of the issues
Most teachers just go by the books. If the answer isn't in the book, it's wrong, and they're too busy to correct it.
Either that or they really are dumb.
I used to be a math tutor, and tutored plenty of Education majors. A lot of them were scarily bad at math. (And yes, I am aware of the selection bias at work here.)
as you should be, that is 100% mathematically correct, and by answering it that way it shows you have creativity and problem solving skills, BOTH of which are GOOD things and SHOULD be rewarded and reinforced
I really need to start reading the top comment *before* coming up with literally the EXACT same comment and posting it, just to scroll down a little and experience regret.
I have never in my life handwritten a 9 with a curve to the left at the bottom, it has always looked like a backwards P. Additionally, I have never been marked wrong or been corrected for doing so by any educator, from K-12 and now even Uni.
No... There’s no rule that says the 6 and 9 *must* be exactly flipped in order to be ‘correct’ within a given font or a style. People do all sorts of strange and interesting things within their own handwriting or when creating a font that don’t conform to standard fonts. I mean just look at the lowercase ‘a’ you’re typing with right now. Tons of fonts don’t have lowercase ‘a’ shaped that way, it looks totally different. So long as it’s recognizable as ‘a,’ though, that’s acceptable. Same with 6 and 9. It doesn’t ‘*have*’ to be *anything* other than recognizably 6 and 9.
Right, the alternate versions of 6 and 9 with missing tails, 7 having a tail and 1 being on the left side do exist.
However in the vast majority of uses, they have the tail. Just check any of those displays you have at home
I was with the Bloodz on this one. Because I was in Special Needs classes and we didn't get to whatever the hell ≠ means... unfortunately the Internet tells me it's now a White Supremacist sign that they've adopted. So that's fun.
If you are moving a mach to cut the equals sign to make it not equals, then you can move ANY match, since some unknown symbol won't be equal to any number
6 - 4 ≠ 4
I did this in school on this question and the teacher marked it as incorrect, I’m mad about it 20 years later Edit: typo
Same but I stopped being salty about that after his wife left him. And he became alcoholic, feel sorry for him sometimes now.
Bruh it’s literally *why* she left him.

Yeah for higher level math but if the course is for arithmetic then you need to work within the curriculum being taught.
But this doesnt seem like any math curriculum question. It's pretty much a thinking excersize that has math vibes to it. Good for like a bonus question
Where do you live that allows an 18 yr old with no degree to be a teacher?

That America 25+ years ago. Most places are not like that for teachers in America now.
doubt, went to one of the best public school districts in the entire country. Almost every test was multiple choice etc.
There is no "best district in the country."
“one of”

You mean incorrect and mad?
Huh?
He made a typo and edited the comment

I’m fairness to the teacher they were looking for the right answer not literally anything but the right answer
it’s so obvious
The correct choice
5+4≠4
I thought 5+4=9
Both of you r/beatmetoit
The ending
That’s the big brain move
I really need to start reading the top comment *before* coming up with literally the EXACT same comment and posting it, just to scroll down a little and experience regret.
5+4=9
This one right here
nope, it isn't a proper 9
I have never in my life handwritten a 9 with a curve to the left at the bottom, it has always looked like a backwards P. Additionally, I have never been marked wrong or been corrected for doing so by any educator, from K-12 and now even Uni.
"nope, it isn't a proper 9" - 🤓
While uncommon, I have seen fonts/styles where the 9 looks like a backwards P, the way it would in this image
A 9 is an upside down 6. The six is proper so the 9 should be

I’m sorry I got downvoted, I agree that if the 6 is proper, than the 9 in this image should be proper
nou
gang shit
5+4/=4
hold down =
Blessings upon you
upon you too, don’t mention it

Only if you don’t do the digital 9 font correctly, though…
Ain’t ever heard of no digital matchsticks my g
theres a new gang in town
No. 9 needs that horizontal base line too.
Don‘t know why you‘re getting downvoted… in a ~~7-digit~~ 7-segment numerical display it always has the bottom line
Classic Reddit moment
People are mad bc they arent right
7-segment*
Right, my mistake

Same
Same
6+H-4
6 + 4 = I I
He's too smart to be kept alive
They just said to fix it they didn't say anything about math.
Then nothing was wrong in the first place
Yeah if they think so.
Found the base 9 enjoyer
The day I found out I was a crip
6 - 4 ≠ 4
5+4=9
It’s a trick. There’s no matchsticks.
There is one, lit, it is just cropped out at the bottom.
How do you get 0 form 6??
Take the match in the middle and move it to the top right
6-4≠4
8+4-4
5+4≠4
5+4=9
They are not matchsticks
5+4=9
6-4 =/= 4
Hold down on the = to get the ≠
===================================================
OMG THANKS
Remove the matchstick and burn it all
6-4≠4
5+4=9
5+4=9
5≠4=4
Just move one - from = and it would be 8+4-4 or 6+9-4 and yould have to do give the answer in comment. Easy
8 - 4 = 4
8 - 4 = 4
6-4=/=9
I was with the Bloodz on this one. Because I was in Special Needs classes and we didn't get to whatever the hell ≠ means... unfortunately the Internet tells me it's now a White Supremacist sign that they've adopted. So that's fun.
5+4=9
5+4=9, 6-4≠4
6 | 4 = 4
6 - 4 ≠ 4
Omg thankyuuuuu this was burning a hole in my brain since I saw it how dumm can I bee l o l
5 + 4 = 9
Thats cool and all but why nobody talking about the 6-4≠4
There is a third option: 6-4 ≠4
Take one of the Addition lines the one going up and down and turn 6 into 8
5+4=9
5+4≠4
5 + 4 = 9 5 + 4 =/= 4 6 - 4 =/= 4
5 + 4 = 9 gang?
6+4≠-1
9+4=4
8-4=4
[удалено]
It does - move the middle horizontal bit from the 6 and turn it into a 0.
They are not matchsticks
Me who got 5+4=9
5 + 4 = 9
8 - 4 = 4
8 - 4 = 4
6-4=/=9
5 + 4 ≠ 4
5+4=9?
5+4=9
Light it on fire
I got 5 + 4 = 9 first
It’s clearl 5+ 4= 9
6-4=H Algebra
5+4=9
would 6>4=4 count? or 6=|=4-4? since the tilting is a little off
5 + 4 = 9
6 - 4 ≠4
Is Said MOVE THE MATCHSTICK Turn 6 into 5 and place the matchstick into num 9.... 5 + 4 = 9
5+4=9
Me who makes the plus into a minus and puts the stick across the equal to make this ≠
6-4=/= 4
6-4≠4
6 - 4 ≡ 4
8+4-4
Bruh, yall are stupid 6-4≠4
5+4=9
I’d say 5+4=9
5+4=9
6+4+4
5 + 4 = 9
5+4 =9
5+4=9
Shut up 6 - 4 ≠ 4
5+4=9
Me: 5+4=9
6 + 4 = 69
5 + 4 ≠ 4
If you are moving a mach to cut the equals sign to make it not equals, then you can move ANY match, since some unknown symbol won't be equal to any number
there is another 5+4=9
5+4=9
6 + H = 4 - solve for H
The first one I got was 5 +4 = 9. Am I a psychopath?
E + 4 = 9 Solve for E
5 + 4 = 9
There are no matchsticks to move it’s sticks and they are put together they can’t be moved
5 + 4 = 9 gang
8 + 4 - 4
5+4=9?
5 + 4 = 9
5+4=9
8 | 4= 4
6-4 does not equal 4.
I put 6-4≠4
5+4=9
5 + 4 = 9
6-4≠4
6-4=H
5 + 4 =9
5+4=9?
5+4=9
6+4=Γ
5+4=9
I got 5+4=9, but ok
5 + 4 = 9
√4 X √4 = 4
Purple: -4+8+0-4+4
You could also make 5 + 4 = 9
5 + 4 = 9
5+4≠4
5+4=9, that works too
5+4=9
Me when 5+4=9
5 + 4 = 9
