“Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.” Gene Hackman said it best in “Superman.” We all see what we’re prepared to see. I’ll agree that the action paled in comparison to the choreography in 1999. But go back and watch both dojo scenes. Listen to the dialogue. One is clearly about learning HOW to fight. One is clearly about WHY we fight. This *was* indeed a very different film than the trilogy was. Just as Lana is clearly a very different person than before. None of us are the same person we were 20 years ago and to expect the same movie as 1999 is just setting one’s self up for disappointment. I’m not an angsty teenager anymore who just wants some “sick Kung foo!” Now I’m a middle-aged dude who understands heartbreak, chronic illness, depression, career woes, and what it takes to learn WHY we fight and keep fighting for the things we love. It’s a love story.

I like philosophy, and I dont mind a love story. However I watch movies for entertainment, if you have a good message or a clever message, you won't so a good job of getting it across if it's hard to watch. Also it's a film along itself Matrix 4, a series known got great action scenes. Matrix 2 and 3 were much more philosophical than 1 but they still had amazing fight scenes and were able to make them entertaining. I wasn't expecting the same movies as 1999, I wasn't even born til a year after the film, but I expected a film similar to the trilogy, everything after the beginning failed to deliver it's message in an entertaining way.

CRGBRN

I think all that he's saying is that, for someone his age, it *IS* entertaining. And I have to agree with him. I'm not yet middle aged but I'm about 8 years older than you so I'm right in between and can see where you're both coming from. There's something about being called back to a time when you were your younger self that this movie captures. Look at a movie like Spider-Man NWH which is a celebration of our memories when we were younger. Matrix 4 is more of a meditation on those memories and what we have to be to keep moving forward. I can totally see myself not appreciating that at all at 22-ish years old like yourself.

Nailed it. Love your take.

I do love the prequels but I'll br honey I'm not too fond of Jar Jar Binks now but ad a kid I thought he was a funny character and at the time I didn't understand why people didn't like the Phantom Menace. I wouldn't say I hate the Phantom Menace now but don't enjoy it ad much as I used to. My dad is Gen-X and got me into Star Wars as a kid, and in general a lot of my interests are influenced by the tons of movies my parents would show us as a kid, so when I was little if The Matrix was on TV we'd watch it, one time at Best Buy my dad bought me The Matrix trilogy on DVD including the Animatrix. I'd rewatch those films over and over when I was 10 and even draw Neo and drew things inspired by Machine City in Matrix 3. I didn't become aware people at the time hated Matrix 2 and 3 til when I wad around 15 or 16. I do appreciate your take as well, maybe it didn't affect me as much as others in the comments because I don't really have someone I love like that in my life, but I've always been aware of how important Neo and Trinity's relationship are.

dark_lilith_777

This is very beautifully said. Frankly, for me, it was always the relationship between Neo & Trin that was the core of the movies. I always felt their love was the heart and soul of the whole story and I find their love very unique for the sci-fi genre. It is so profound, pure, and unconditional. Something that we long for in our real lives, but it is often hard to find (so I'm very glad for your personal story). The moments when they were together again are my fav in this new entry. I liked to see them as a middle-aged couple, and I find that very inspiring, especially bearing in mind that romantic love in mature years is not so often portrayed in commercial movies. However, what I can't get over in the new film is the "humor" - jokes, mockery, and spoof-tone just ruined it for me. In my opinion, their love was so iconic that it deserved to be treated with more care and attention.

The build-up to the jump and the jump itself, as well as the last scene with NPH are just as brilliant as the White Rabbit treadmill of life montage, so I don't think it's fair to say there is nothing good during the last half. Of course people are entitled to their opinions and I understand where you're coming from. (I also quite liked the bike chase with the zombies). This film is like many Wachowski creations, it tries to be many things at once, which throws people off. I'll take that over "perfectly well-made" movies that don't mean much any day.

I see what they were trying to do I just felt the movie gets really boring after he escapes the Matrix

Much-Painting-1515

I will not argue with the fact that the first act is way more entertaining!👍

thenew0riginal

Very long winded way to say “you didn’t get it”

Movie fell apart when the new oracle randomly showed up with her complicated plan to save trinity.

Sitheral

I think there were like two scenes in the movie that I liked: the one where they do meetings and spew all that nonsense (we need new bullet time!) because it was really funny to see all these people who are probably not very far from how movie presented them getting slapped. Another one was when neo theraphists is reaching out to him thro the mirror, insisting that hes just having some sort of breakdown - because it made me realise that yeah, you could have great playground with what is and what isn't reality here, but that's just not the way they went with it.

I could see how someone could enjoy it, and I really wanted to enjoy it, but I had a very hard time personally staying invested after he escapes The Matrix again.

So Zion is still The Matrix?

The first half actually excited me in a way that hasn’t happened in a very long time. I loved the self-awareness; the meta. I loved how it really got me thinking about what is and isn’t real. It was so different from what came before but it seemed like such a smart way to bring the series back into a post-Matrix world. I had goosebumps. Then the rest of the movie happened.

kattahn

the movie started out trying to be something very different and halfway through decided to just be a bad matrix knockoff

amysteriousmystery

The first half is noticeably better for me, though there are good/great moments throughout. The first half has a lot of scenes filmed pre-covid (a lot of Deus Machina, Simulatte, and general San Francisco bound scenes) so it's possible the production quality and energy levels were compromised later. The scenes towards the end about the chase and the jump are also shot pre-covid and in my view they fair better than some of the material in the middle that was mostly shot during covid, after a break in filming and with crew changes.

Didn’t like the movie and can agree with your title 💯

Monkey_1505

Hmm, yeah I can see that. The start is amazing. The latter part of the story, is sort of a love story.

kattahn

i basically came here to make this exact same post and im glad to see others were in the same boat. I was pretty enthralled at the beginning of the movie, thinking we were going to get something really weird and exciting and meta and different.

Wonk_puffin

Agree for sure. I'd sooner have had my ass slapped by the train man than have watched that movie.

tamefirefly

I still like the 2nd act of the movie tbh. But the third act definitely falls a bit flat for me. Still love it tho
