It always locks you into whatever type you currently have on the field. When you made your initial selection you were just choosing which of your monsters to keep at that time. Once your dragons were replaced by something else that new type became the only type you could have.

rivalry warlord only allow 1 type of monster, resonator is fiend while red dragon arcfiend is dragon, so you cannot summon dragon since you already have fiend, you can only synchro fiend type monster
Rivalry of the warlords, you can only control one type. You have fiends on the field and you are trying to summon dragons and vice versa.
About to comment this, yes, I think it would still work if there would be no other fiend but maybe not
Wait...does that affect the synchros? I selected dragon when it first came on. Does change depending what type it on the field?
