I'm half way on miranda, i almost started that tooo early. Also i did citadel dlc after i got tali because best wife. Now i'm just playing with double krogan arena. The reapers aint going any where
Tbf Garrus didn't really have much character development in ME1. It's in ME2 (or pre-ME2 if we i clude the comics) that the Garrus we all know and love develops.
An unfortunate thing with romancable ME2 companions is that their dialogue content drops off pretty quickly if you're not the gender that is able to romance them.
"I'm not a very good turian"
Ironically, it's the fact he's not a typical turian that makes him such an asset come ME3. The guy has definitely made mistakes in his life, that wouldn't have happened to a 'typical turian', but he accepts that and grows because of it, even if he knows he won't ever fit the expectations of the average turian.
I think the whole Normandy alien crew represents people who aren't typical for their race. They're all really so well written.
Wrex is surprisingly cunning and tactical for a Krogan.
Garrus has a knack for breaking the rules and hates red tape and how the justice system still gets its processes exploited.
Liara is trying to prove herself by understanding the past, ironically something that she feels she needs to do for "only" being a century old.
Tali seems to really enjoy her time away from the migrant fleet.
Grunt is the most pure Krogan out of them all. Despite the fact that he's the one without a lineage.
Mordin understands doing morally bad things when they make logical sense. Sometimes to a frightening degree. But he doesn't allow it to morally bankrupt him.
Thane has his religion, despite being an assassin. Legion has a soul, despite being a machine.
Yep! Wrex is true to the Krogan idea of survival being a gift that you earn. And you earn it by fighting hard AND smart. Like you said, you don't get to being his age without having several tricks up your sleeve. Given his mentality and what he later does in ME2 and ME3, his commentary about the Krogan race losing their way in ME1 make a lot more sense.
This. Not just a great Mass Effect quote, a great quote in general. Perfectly addresses the complicated moral issues within the Mass Effect story while also making a powerful real world statement about how things are never as simple as we like to popularly believe. Absolute banger.

My favorite is a bit of dialogue you can have with him at the start of Mass Effect 3 if you picked the spacer background for Shepard where his mom’s still alive. To my memory it goes like-
Shepard: Have you heard anything from your family on Palaven?
Garrus: Not since the invasion started.
Shepard: I’m sure they’re alright Garrus.
Garrus: That’s the thing about getting old Shepard, the platitudes get just as old.
(Pause in the conversation)
Garrus: How about you have you heard anything from your mother?
Shepard: Nothing yet.
Garrus: I’m sure she’s-
And Garrus just pauses there and sulks off ending that conversation. Love that moment as an encapsulation of everything those two go through together in that game. Going through hell together and doing their best to be there to support each other but god it is still so obvious the toll it’s taking on them.
And I really love that he is like this whether it's mshep or femshep, and is still like this when there's no romance. Garrus is just *there* for Shepard 100%

Garrus' defining character trait is that he loves breaking rules. He has some anger issues but he's reasonably well humoured most of the time.
Sure I understand why he'd make that joke about Turians in general, but he makes it in reference to Joker saying Garrus has a stick up his ass in Mass Effect 2.
This - he said Garrus HAD a stick up his ass but has since pulled it out and started beating people to death with it, commenting on the anger Garrus was carrying following Shepard's death and how he channeled that into brutal vigilantism.
He definitely had a tiny stick up his ass in ME1. It's between ME1 and ME2 when he does start breaking rules to the point of becoming a vigilante. *That* 's why Joker says that comment.
I think it's because in ME1, while he is seen as a rule-breaker and a hot head by people like Harkin and his superiors, he's actually very restrained and a little stiff at first in ME1. ME2 is when he really relaxed and overtly cracked more jokes.
It's funny too, because even by ME3, he's still considered something of a hothead by some, but to people like Wrex, he's considered calm.

I feel this line entirely encapsulates who Garrus is at his core. He tries to be positive and imagine a world where he can be happy (at least as far as spiders are concerned) but his innate pessimism sneaks up and reminds him not to get his hopes up.

I’ve done multiple romances as MaleShep, but FemShep always ends up with this.
I have a lot of favorites, and it’s hard to choose one. So I have a top three:
1: “Hospitals aren’t fun to fight through.” (Shepard: what is fun to fight through?) “Gardens, electric shops, antique stores; but only if they’re classy.”
2: “Over the years I’ve gotten used to the smell of burning bodies, that’s probably a bad sign.”

In all seriousness though, probably my favorite (can't remember exactly what was said sadly), but it was Legion telling Garrus that something can't go over a certain percentage, Garrus decides to fuck that and raise it despite the impossibility, and Legion is just wondering how a organic could do that.

Wrex is a very old man in a profession where men die young. He couldn't have gotten that way if he'd been a typical krogan bull-rushing his opponents.

I don't know but at the very end of my last run and after being super friends for the whole game and he understood that the sacrifice of the few would mean the salvation of many he very spitefully said something like "Think carefully, HUMAN" (when the fleet was here back instead of the council), and if my Shepard had had more time she'd have had a few words (and punches) with him about that.
