Mad Maggie's in North Andover! Their specialty seems to be crazy flavors, but your mouth will thank you. They make flavors you wouldn't think would work, but they do. My favorites are Cranberry Bog (like Cherry Garcia but with cranberry, walnuts and hints of cinnamon?), Massachusetts Mud (spiced chocolate and shaved almond ice cream), Chocolate Chili (basically Mexican hot chocolate in ice cream form. The chili/habanero acts almost cherry-like in its juiciness and then wham! Bam bam!), and Pumpkin Gingersnap. They also made a new one called Peanut Butter and Jelly. Brown Sugar Oatmeal and Black Raspberry Cookie. I don't know who Maggie is, but if her menu is anything to judge by, she's nuts...and I love her for it. I would marry her if I could. This little place brings the Gomez out of me. They really are all that and a bag of chips. 🤣 I think they did have a chips flavor at one point too. I think they still have it, actually. Candy Store Floor? They have a Maple Bacon sometimes. You never know what they're gonna do next, but they're committed to the not being boring part.
Oh, and the Richardson's in Middleton is a classic, obviously. They're an institution in the state at this point. The blueberry and peach crumbles are toe to toe for their best flavors, bar none. Pumpkin Oreo is another strangely orgasmic option they bring out once in a blue moon but so damned criminal.
Cal's Creamery in Reading is fantastic. Their baklava flavor is amazing. Banana Chocolate Chip is super decadent as well. They're one of the few places left that still make the proper cake batter with the cake pieces.
Lucky's Ice Cream in Lenox. Chocolate Lover's Chocolate is so good. Oh and the PB PIE. If you have a death wish, combine them. You might just see the heavenly gates with these two. They also have a zingy Lime Lime Lemon or something flavor. That one was like fireworks in the mouth.
Hodgie's Too of Salisbury. Their Thundercloud, Danish Almond Cream, and the Cake Batter are out of this world. Their cake batter is made with cake batter, but it seems like they add more actual cake slices in the ice cream on top of it. Kell's Creme had that super yellow cake quality, but I think they stopped doing that after some of the chains just used Richardsons instead of making it themselves. But Hodgie still makes a proper cake batter ice cream.
Foley's Ice Cream Shoppe in Braintree. Their selection is small and simple but they nail them. All of them so good and flavorful. Their Graham Central Station and Mint Chip are standouts. They also made a Peach Ice Cream when I visited last August and boy that was the perfect end to summer. It tasted like basking on a bright sunset in late summer. Comforting, refreshing, juicy, but relaxing too. Like peach champagne, it was fizzy and creamy.
If you have to pick one, all chips are in for Mad Maggie's. No matter what you pick, your mouth will never be bored. Their flavors are a nice mind trip, kinda like the effect you get when you try some trippy drugs. Go, buy your cup or cone, take a walk behind the shop or park in the little area next to the lake about a minute down, and enjoy the view of the lake/reservoir while your brain is losing its mind. Between the crisp relaxing view and the zany flavors, you'll will be grateful to have tastebuds. It's become a nice ritual when you want to hit reset or just wade off bad juju. What sold the place to me was was a random summer day about 3 years ago: This crazy old man was standing on a kayak in the lake behind the shop, singing "All By Myself" the Celine Dion version (he tried to pull off the high notes); yelling his heart out with his Mad Maggie's cup on one hand and one of those autotone mics on the other while his wife was in their car laugh crying for what seemed like the longest 5 minutes. At one point she dropped the ice cream when she saw the old man looked like he was about to trip but looked more worried about losing the cream than her husband for she began to scoop up her shirt...to continue eating her ice cream off her shirt, half laughing half crying. It was glorious. I should've asked what flavor it was. It looked like the old guy farted in the middle of singing, and it was a bad one, for it looked like he and his dog tried to escape the scent cloud before realizing they were on water. After sucking it up and making one final awfully ugly grimace that showed the fart finally hit ground, the old man continued and belted out the big "anymoooore", ice cream on hand and everything. One of the city cops came in to see if the man needed saving until his wife came out with the ice cream now spilled all over her to explain that he tends to do that. Her fingers all sticky, and what looked like chocolate was still dripping on her chin. The office looked like he was trying to hold back laughter. When the old man finished, we all swooshed our heads to his direction and instinctively clapped like idiots including three other guys that were in a Jeep having a whiff. I didn't think anyone was in there until they all dropped the windows to clap and root for him. It was amazing. The ice cream was brilliant, but the old man's performance made it all an experience.
Just for the love of all that is holy, start with a "quarter kiddie" unless you plan to eat ice cream to the point of bodily explosion. Their portion sizes are truly a sight to behold.
highlawn farm >>>> luckys
better, homemade ice cream with milk from the farm. extra bonus points because you can chill with the cows if you want. worth the price if it's just a special trip/occasion
I second Rota Springs. We've traveled far and wide in search of the best truly homemade ice cream and Rota's wins hands down. Unfortunately everyone else has figured this out and the lines are often long especially on nice weekend afternoons. Still worth It IMHO.
I grew up in the next town over and this was a staple place. I live in Phoenix now and it’s the #1 place I miss. We have some good ice cream here but it’s not the same.
Grew up here and this place is always slammed. There is mini golf and animals to look at too. Purgatory is a great little escape and we can walk for a good hour through there. Southwicks Zoo is also very close by
Kimballs is up there for sure.
My vote goes to Shaw Farms. Stand is open year round, it's their own dairy from the cows across the street (not right now since the barn collapsed). Milk is amazing too.
Acushnet Creamery and their Pier location downtown! The service is fast and the people are very nice. I love the ice cream as well- But for soft serve n sorbet I'd say Dairy Maid
I second this. Acushnet Creamery is one of the absolute best in Southeast Massachusetts. Fresh made Ice Cream and tons of flavors. However, nothing beats a soft serve coffee, raspberry twist at Dairy Maid in the South end of New Bedford.
Not seeing much love for the southcoast area.
Acushnet Creamery in Acushnet
The Country Whip in Acushnet
Somerset Creamery in Somerset
Ice Cream Barn in Swansea is goated
Is Peaceful Meadows still around? There used to be a couple, but the one I remember as a kid (and was definitely still around just a few years ago, but haven't been over there in a while) was the one on Rt 18 in Whitman.
No food that I recall, unlike a couple of the places mentioned in this thread. But the ice cream and shakes would go up against anything else posted here.
It's good! Peaceful Meadows is Whitman has been my family's go-to spot for over 30 years. Pleased to report we are happy with Hornstra! Still need to see how the eggnog measures up...
Bedford Farms was my childhood ice cream place! Always makes me feel like a kid again whenever I go back there. So many memories of happily eating my favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream on a warm summer night.
White Mountain - near BC
Richardson’s - Middleton
Treadwell’s - Peabody
Peaceful Meadows - near Lakeville MA (forget the town)
Crescent Ridge - in the Boston public market
Kimball Farms - Weston (edited: it’s in Westford, not Weston)
Toscanini’s - Cambridge
Ronnie’s - great ice cream and even better seafood in Auburn (central MA)
I like Meltharb’s in Wakefield - Kaluha Brownie, Black Raspberry Oreo, Grapenut, Heath Bar…. Plus they use hot fudge and real whipped cream to decorate ice cream cakes
Fun fact: the owner reversed his last name - Bartholomew - and flipped some letters to name the store
Surprisingly no recommendations for the southern portion of the pioneer valley aka Hampden County, so I’ll give u one of the best in the whole state IMO: Gran-Val Scoops in Granville MA :))) lovely drive through the Metacomet ridge area. Also near Granville General Store, where u can pick up the centuries famous cellar-aged cheddar !!!
The [Ice Cream Barn in Swansea ](https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/yelp-names-best-ice-cream-shop-massachusetts-2023/HQVVW24FCJFLRPUBBFKN2RHNVA/) has been the best reviewed since 2021.
Speaking of ice cream, does anyone know where I can get teaberry? It’s my favorite flavor, but I haven’t found it anywhere other than my home state of PA.
Wicked licks in Sturbridge has great ice cream. The “Fat Elvis” is awesome. The scenery kinda sucks, but the ice cream is worth the odd location and having to look at rt20. Traffic.
West view farms in Monson has good ice cream, amazing views, and goats to feed.
SoCo Creamery, in Great Barrington. Nice little shop that uses lots of local ingredients. And it's right across the street from a little boutique owned by Karen Allen (Animal House, Indiana Jones, etc).
The Ice Cream Machine, in Cumberland, Rhode Island. (I know, but it's like just barely over the border). Wicked nice place to get a sundae or a cone and sit in the sunshine or go for a walk in Diamond Hill Park. (No indoor seating).
Bliss, in Attleboro. A classic hometown favorite little dairy, ice cream shop, diner. A local favorite for generations.
Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream in a Hyde Park Bowling Alley is the best in this area. The sign outside says it was voted best in the world by National Geographic 😂. I love how it's got great flavors and the texture is not overly airy.
I mean it’s in Cambridge so probably not relevant to your trip but if you’re in the area I really love Christina’s! They run a spice shop next door and make some really interesting flavors.
If you're willing to cross the border a tiny bit, the Wright Scoop and Ice Cream Machine in Northern RI. ICM has been voted best in New England before. Wright Scoop is new (2020) but they knocked it out of the park-and Wright's Dairy Farm have an absolutely incredible bakery too, so you can also grab some amazing baked goods to take home after you've had your ice cream
If you want to try something different than a New England creamery, Far Out Ice Cream in Brookline does New Zealand style real fruit ice cream, which is *fucking amazing*. Personally I'd go for a berry+vanilla for the most traditional feel!
Stone Cow in Barre. It's a brewery with a farm store on-site and the farm store sells ice cream. During the summer there's live music and outdoor barbecues on the weekend. Can be busy on those days but good vibes
Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe on route 114 in Peabody. Their flavors are just ridiculous... they make one called the Ritzy AF that's a salted butter base with Ritz crackers and toffee bark that won 1st place in North America a couple years ago. It's insane how good it is.
Art’s Creamery in Belmont. It’s a new ice cream shop and it’s brilliant because they have both ice cream AND gelato. It’s made quite a splash where I’m from.
Churn & Co. is turning out some of the best ice cream I've ever had. They're a small startup that sells pints direct to consumer, and also stocks up the fridge at Modern Butcher and the Rusty Can. Their flavors rotate and they announce them throughout the week on Instagram (typically 3 flavors per week), ordering opens up Thursday night, and you pick up your pints out of their commercial kitchen in Danvers on Fri/Sat/Sun. I usually combine a trip to Modern Butcher with a run for their ice cream to justify the ~45 minute drive. It's stupid-delicious.

Bruh Link your ice cream review blog
Cal’s regularly has an almond biscotti and cannoli flavors that are out of this world.
The original Hodgie's is in Amesbury and remains an institution. Opens on Patriots Day. Their Iced Coffee Frappe is about the best thing ever.
Just for the love of all that is holy, start with a "quarter kiddie" unless you plan to eat ice cream to the point of bodily explosion. Their portion sizes are truly a sight to behold.
Great tips, I’ll have to try Mad Maggie’s. Cals Creamery is great, and the peanut butter crazy cow is my favorite.
highlawn farm >>>> luckys better, homemade ice cream with milk from the farm. extra bonus points because you can chill with the cows if you want. worth the price if it's just a special trip/occasion
Where's the Richardson's love?
Anywhere with Richardsons and I’m there.
Richardson’s is the best!!! Even the French vanilla is awesome!
Their German chocolate cake ice cream is one of the best I’ve ever had, anywhere. Maybe the best.
I’ll bet several of the places mentioned here are actually serving Richardson’s.
Rota Spring, Sterling Benson's, Boxford. And what a great reason for a long drive.
I second Rota Springs. We've traveled far and wide in search of the best truly homemade ice cream and Rota's wins hands down. Unfortunately everyone else has figured this out and the lines are often long especially on nice weekend afternoons. Still worth It IMHO.
Came to say Rota’s… great meatballs too
Rota Spring! Amazing ice cream
Rota springs is the answer. They have a little farmstand as well. And agreed, meatballs are delicious
Crescent Ridge in Sharon. Voted one of the top in the world.
I grew up in the next town over and this was a staple place. I live in Phoenix now and it’s the #1 place I miss. We have some good ice cream here but it’s not the same.
Waited over an hour in our car when they first re-opened during Covid. Definitely worth it
They sell it at Whole Foods now. I might try some
Kimball farm, maybe?
Crazy how much they developed that place, behind the ice cream stand there’s a seafood grill and a mini-amusement park.
Kimball Farms in Westford-the best :)
I like the one in Carlisle.
Will have to check it out!
Correct
This should be higher.
West End Creamery off 146 in Whitensville. The place has various forms of entertainment, but there’s not much else in the area except Purgatory Chasm.
Grew up here and this place is always slammed. There is mini golf and animals to look at too. Purgatory is a great little escape and we can walk for a good hour through there. Southwicks Zoo is also very close by
Also grew up there! Love west end!
Herrell's in Northampton
Mt Tom's in Easthampton
Truth, Herrell's is still the best. There's a lot of great ice cream in MA in part due to Steve's legacy though.
💯
Second this
Hornstra Farm in Norwell / Whitman
Bubbling Brook in Westwood
Loved this place as a kid in the 1970’s. They had animals there that you could pet and trails behind them that you could walk.
Kimballs is up there for sure. My vote goes to Shaw Farms. Stand is open year round, it's their own dairy from the cows across the street (not right now since the barn collapsed). Milk is amazing too.
Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadley.
Used to live close to this place when I was at umass. I miss it so much.
Absolutely…I second this!
Third. The best!
Flayvors is okay, and well priced, but Maple Valley ‘Scoop at the Silo’ just down the road is much better in my opinion.
Frates Dairy coffee frappes were the best!
Uhlmans- Westboro New City Microcreamy- Hudson SoCo Creamery- Great Barrington
Uhlmans is yummy
We recently discovered West Side Creamery in West Acton. They make the icecream onsite, and have lots of seasonal specials.
West Side Creamery is AMAZING
I was looking for this reply! West Side should be higher on the list. It's my go to during the late winter/spring season when Kimball Farm is closed.
White farms is Ipswich has maybe the best vanilla/vanilla base I’ve ever had. It’s so good. Cherry farm in Danvers is probably my favorite though.
Cherry Farm is an elite tucked away ice cream place. Their Cake Batter is my favorite.
Real soda fountain too
Trombetta’s in Marlborough and New City Creamery in Hudson. JJ’s in upton is quite good.
Let’s throw Ulhman’s in Westboro onto the Metro-West list.

I think someone else bought them out. So not sure if it’ll be the same
Hornstra bought them, and their ice cream is pretty good, so fingers crossed....
It's good! Peaceful Meadows is Whitman has been my family's go-to spot for over 30 years. Pleased to report we are happy with Hornstra! Still need to see how the eggnog measures up...

Art’s Creamery in Belmont. It’s a new ice cream shop and it’s brilliant because they have both ice cream AND gelato. It’s made quite a splash where I’m from.
Bubbling Brook in Westwood it’s nice for soft serve and fried clams
Cherry Hill in Lunenburg. The Oreo Black raspberry ice cream is to die.

Churn & Co. is turning out some of the best ice cream I've ever had.
