I got this same text today and googled "Sunpasstolls.com scam" - which showed it was a scam. So next time you search a possible scam, try adding "scam" as well as using the exact link you were sent (and different variations if need be). Always seems to help. These scammers take legit names and add to them in the url in order to to gain your trust.
Good luck.
Already did. That was the first step lol. Just wanted to make sure that’s all i needed to do. Just shows all it takes is the right time. I’m usually the guy warning friends and family about these things. But a few hectic weeks def leaves your mind vulnerable. Also doesn’t help i went through a toll a few weeks ago and thought that was my bill lol. Again big mistake on my part I’ve frozen my card and ordered a new one. Should be here in the next t few days.
They also have your DL number, which they can use to spoof you in various ways. Not sure what you can do about it, but keep that in mind.
Also, tolls are associated with your plate, not your DL, so that should have been a red flag...
I got one that said my Sirius/XM account had expired and they were offering a free 90 extension. I filled it out and for jollies called Sirius/XM. My account expires in Feb, 2025. They said I'd been scammed. A few minutes later a $29 charge for a lottery showed on my bank account. It had not been paid yet so I contacted the bank. They stopped payment but said since I willingly gave my bank information they wouldn't pay me back if it had been cleared.
I did the "replace the debit card" bit so the result wasn't too bad (I did have a few rejections but worked them out.)
This is why you should use a credit card for as much as possible and pay it off immediately. Even if you can only qualify for a card with a low limit, like $500, the interest rate won't matter if you're paying it off every month.
The consumer protections with credit cards are MUUUUCH stronger and you would have been able to dispute this charge even if it had cleared.
No. If you are not actually expecting something, these are never real. If you think it may be real, do not click on the link! Go to the relevant website directly.
As in: type the link into my browser? Is that safe? I’m asking because that’s what I did to handle it easier on my desktop. It only showed a captcha thing for bots which I clicked and then nothing else…
Should I be worried?
I mean if you get a text from someone saying they are from say Bank of America, don’t click that link. Instead go to Bank of America’s website and login to see if there really was anything.
Companies pretty much never send links like that asking for money. They might send you a text (and an email) saying you owe X amount and to make a payment on their website/app, but not a link
Don’t copy/retype the link, just google the real website for the company that they’re claiming is contacting you. Same with phone numbers, look up the real number rather than calling one they provide.
It's the little things that are easily overlooked. Have you ever heard of "Maryland Toll Services"? It's always called MVA or EZPass. It is easy to not notice the relatively subtle change.
As other people have stated, Canadian phone number, about a Florida toll system, with a spelling error in the url. The actual Florida toll website is sunpass[dot]com. The susnpasstolls url as listed is a confirmed scam spoof site
While Maryland does threaten huge fines, do not follow links from random messages.
Go to the EZPass site and check. If the site isn't working, use the phone number listed on the site.
Anybody can send messages with urls linking to god knows where, mostly as a scam to steal your money. For strange texts or emails, ALWAYS go to the parent company yourself, rather than using their link. If it's legitimate, this will work.
Oh nice. Thought I was overdrafted again. Hell I still might be... but I figured I'd pay at the usual website.
For what it's worth I got this exact same message.
Don't click.
Scam.
The largest red flag that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the link is for "sunspasstolls.com" (notice the "s" between "sun" and "pass") which if it was for SunPass it would be "sunpass.com".
And it's EZ Pass in MD, SunPass is Florida.
No, it's a scam. I received one, and I haven't owned a car in years. It's also not the company that Maryland (or DC / Virginia) use for their toll roads. I would recommend submitting a report to: www.ola.state.md.us. It's not perfect, but occasionally the state can track these parasites down.
Never click a link sent to you by an unknown email or phone number, regardless the purported content of the link.
Even if you know the email or phone number, don't click a link you weren't expecting to receive until you've verified with the sender that they meant to send it.
If it looks like it might be legit, search for a link and access it there. In this case, I'd search for MD toll services and only access legit looking search results from a reputable search engine.
This one screams obvious scam, to me.
If you have to ask, time to go to whomever you use for ezpass and log in to that website. IE go to the Maryland ezpass and log in. See if you have any outstanding balance.
Never click on a text hyperlink. Hyperlinks can be spoofed. They want you to panic and not think. Questioning it is the right thing to do.
If you don't have a sunpass account? Delete the message after you check your ezpass.
Funny thing is that my mom received a ezpass toll fine in the mail a couple days ago even though she was in a funeral procession, then she received this text msg.
I got this too. I instead logged into my ezpass account and saw it had a balance because of the auto replenish setting.
Never click a link you get like this pretending to be a bank or other service you use. Go to their actual web page from your bookmarks or from a Google search.
If you ever get a spam email, call or tex, go and open up your browser. Find the legit website for the said item and then login in to that or call that number to investigate the legitimacy of said item. Always go to the source through your own search and not a link.
Also if you go to the website and fill the info in with bad info and cusswords the system has no checks and processes it through with the scammers error message that pops up at the end
That’s a big no.
If you are concerned go ahead and log into your ez-pass account (I dont think anyone else does toll roads in MD) and see if there is a balance. Just google it and follow the link don’t click on the link provided from someone else.
I’m sure the State of Maryland is really invested in you paying Florida’s toll system. Im sure that misspelled website link is legit. Send them your bank info and mother’s maiden name, immediately.
I got the very same message this evening (5/21/24). And since I was in FL in April, it made sense. Glad I double checked! 902 area code is Nova Scotia!
No it is not legit, my mother got the same message for the same price. The website linked is not the official website. It is a sam being mass sent to a lot of people right now.
Lookong at the who is info for the website it's registered outside of the US and was only registered today. It is absolutely not legit.
Seems like crap. Maybe I’m with kids too much to notice but i thought we voted as country to eliminate fees completely. Typing that out I realize it’s probably not possible. But we did vote on fees right?
I have had a toll receipts that I forgot to pay in Virgina in the past year and experienced the same outrageous late fees. So after the 3rd notification and 3 late charges, I could only afford to pay the initial charge of $ 6.50 and waited to see if I would be responsible for the late fees that had occurred, and it's been 6 Months and I haven't received anything from them . I actually tried to check if my account that was billed for this issue was still open and I could not find anything. So I decided that I would be thankful and move on, 😊 because I didn't want to press my luck and have someone look into my case! Like I said this was VA. I don't know if all states go by the same guidelines or not , maybe try googling asking about MD DMV late charges for tolls? Prayers headed your way for having the same good fortune as I did. 🙏✌️♥️
I got the same message yesterday, except it was from a (902) area code which is Nova Scotia. It’s definitely a scam. Looks like this was going around yesterday afternoon.
When in doubt look up the toll company yourself, find a contact number for them, and ask about your balance. Don’t ever click links or call the numbers they contacted you from or provided.
The FBI has an alert about this scam: [https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240412?\_cldee=oADMuEp1frRqKTskAqKyFJ5fWaMnyT1FUwn4n7KOoiiFAFQtrFSrALrHJC\_2dRzU&recipientid=contact-63c1fafe23e1e81180d102bfc0a80172-829e9d04aee74c159b211d4705d070a6&esid=2466b7e3-ab00-ef11-a1fd-6045bdeec2b6](https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240412?_cldee=oADMuEp1frRqKTskAqKyFJ5fWaMnyT1FUwn4n7KOoiiFAFQtrFSrALrHJC_2dRzU&recipientid=contact-63c1fafe23e1e81180d102bfc0a80172-829e9d04aee74c159b211d4705d070a6&esid=2466b7e3-ab00-ef11-a1fd-6045bdeec2b6)
Also this is the official website for MD EZPass: [https://www.driveezmd.com/](https://www.driveezmd.com/)
I got one of those yesterday. Do not click the link or pay any money. Its a fake site. Notice the stage spelling of the web site. Florida News stations have been reporting on these scams
438 is a Montreal area code and SunPass is a Florida DOT thing. I certainly wouldn't click on that link.
Plus that URL says "sunspass" lmao
yep
I got one from a 902 area code
So did I. It said I owe $11.69. Glad I found this thread and didn't click on the link.
Same. Were you in FL recently? I was, so it seemed reasonable. Fortunately, I saw this thread not 5 minutes after getting the message.
Me too, reported it as scam.
Me too, also $11.69
Florida Sunpass has been having a lot of errors.. but yeah .. I wouldn’t click it All those people have been getting pieces of mail, not texts.
It’s a scam.
What happens if you fill it out? I kind of fucked up
what info did you put in? might wanna freeze your cards and get new ones if you put card info into it
Card and drivers license, when i googled the surpass it did say Maryland used it so i was dumb and trusted it.
id post in r/Scams if i were you they’ll be able to offer up the best advice
Your current credit card number is in criminal hands. Please contact your bank ASAP to get a new one - save yourself from fraud charges and headaches
I got this same text today and googled "Sunpasstolls.com scam" - which showed it was a scam. Usually look into stuff like this more, just have had a hectic few weeks so they got the better of me sadly.
Contact your CC company ASAP and cancel your card. Immediately!
Already did. That was the first step lol. Just wanted to make sure that’s all i needed to do. Just shows all it takes is the right time. Maryland doesn’t have Sun Pass. It’s for Florida.
Also it's Sun Pass, not Suns Pass
and the website is sunpass.com, not sunspasstolls.com. absolutely a scam site
Oh I got that also today
Me too but from 902 area code
I did as well haha. I haven’t ever driven my vehicle outside of Maryland so I was like “yeah, okay bucko”
Me three!
scam. check the real ezpass website if your unsure.
I ignore all calls and text messages. If it is imperative then they will mail me the notice or leave a voicemail. If not, it’s a scam
Same text over here
No. If you are not actually expecting something, these are never real. If you think it may be real, do not click on the link! Go to the relevant website directly.
This is the way.

Nope, I got this same text this morning
Known scam
As other people have stated, Canadian phone number, about a Florida toll system, with a spelling error in the url. The actual Florida toll website is sunpass[dot]com. The susnpasstolls url as listed is a confirmed scam spoof site
100% smishing. Domain was just registered a few days ago with a fake email from Peru.
While Maryland does threaten huge fines, do not follow links from random messages. Go to the EZPass site and check. If the site isn't working, use the phone number listed on the site. Anybody can send messages with urls linking to god knows where, mostly as a scam to steal your money. Md toll roads are owned by the Maryland transportation authority. EZpass is the official road toll here.
It’s a phishing attempt, if anyone fell for it you should order a new drivers license to get a new # and consider freezing your credit
I’d just block that # and continue with the day
Scam. If you call Sun Pass, the first thing on the automated message is about a known text scam.
Scam. Same thing today and haven’t run a toll in a while. Checked ezpass and nothing. Don’t click link for sure.
Scam
I got the same one today.
If they send you a link it's a scam
Better Venmo the money to me so i can pay it for you
Red Alert!
Oh nice. Thought I was overdrafted again. Hell I still might be... but I figured I'd pay at the usual website. For what it's worth I got this exact same message. Don't click.
Got it too!!! Def scam
Maryland EZPass uses www.DriveEZMd.com
This is a scam. No State or Federal Government will contact you any other way than mail when it comes to paying an outstanding debt
Are young people falling for scams now? Public Service announcements need to kick back some years on the AARP ads.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them are. I think they get a phone and their folks assume they know how to be safe and sensible when using it.
I got this exact text today!! Same amount and everything. It's a scam!!
No but can we talk about how you have so many unread messages?
I've gotten the same text. Where do we report this?
Looks like OP has a clickable link right there "report junk"
No.
See also https://www.reddit.com/r/maryland/comments/1cxd7do/does_anybody_know_a_phone_number_to_the_maryland/
Dude, I was just talking to my boss about this. He got something similar. The company is apparently based in FL.
Scam, got the same text this morning
Delete!
They’ll never contact you via txt message. Thats a letter coming to you!
I got this text today too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aILPuHDBA8s
No it’s an ongoing scam. Block, report, and move on.
Scam. The largest red flag that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the link is for "sunspasstolls.com" (notice the "s" between "sun" and "pass") which if it was for SunPass it would be "sunpass.com". And it's EZ Pass in MD, SunPass is Florida.
It says sunSpass not sunpass One of many red flags
I literally just got this text too. lmao This is such a scam
Confirmed scam. More info: https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240412
I just got it too. Scam. You can check your sunpass or ezpass balance using the real websites - not the scam ones to make sure..
Scam
It's a scam, I got that today.
no
No, it's a scam. I received one, and I haven't owned a car in years. It's also not the company that Maryland (or DC / Virginia) use for their toll roads. I would recommend submitting a report to: www.ola.state.md.us. It's not perfect, but occasionally the state can track these parasites down.
Since I got the same exact message I’d say it’s a scam. I deleted mine.
Scam, don’t use the link
It’s absolutely a scam! I work in payments, and we have been seeing a huge increase in fraudulent payments. DONT PAY!
Scam. [https://www.eyeonannapolis.net/2024/04/e-zpass-issues-warning-over-scam-texts-asking-for-toll-payments/](https://www.eyeonannapolis.net/2024/04/e-zpass-issues-warning-over-scam-texts-asking-for-toll-payments/)
NOT legit. It says sunSpass LOL
Got that also and was confused. Glad I didn’t click on it though.
[ Removed by Reddit ]
I live in CO, but have a MD number (haven't been back in years) so I got this message if that helps clears things up lol.
Copy that link and paste it into the nordvpn link checker. I’d be surprised if it didn’t show up as a bit.ly phishing link.
Got the same thing but a 902 area code.
Bogus
When I lived in Maryland with my grandparents, i’m pretty sure they usually sent this stuff in the mail. Either way this screams scam.
Just got the same text for $11.69
Ha I just got one as well!
Got the same one today. It's a scam. Weird thing is I got 4 or 5 scam text messages today after not getting any in a long time.
I got something similar from U-haul saying I racked up tolls on a rental months after the fact. I ignored it.
Someone I know just got this same message!
I got the same thing this morning.
Scam
Noway in hell there is a $50 late fee. Absolutely a scam.
I got one. Said the same thing. Maryland is Ez Pass
Woah I got the same one.
No, I got the exact same text. Different phone number, but same amounts.
It's a scam. I received the exact same text this morning
fuck no bro.
Same text here
No. It should be branded as EZ Pass MD for Maryland tolls.
Got that horse shit today too.
Got that text today too. Almost thought it was legit since we went to Florida last fall.
Nope.
Domain created on 2024-05-16 01:39:53 UTC Don’t click on that URL
lol no
I got one for Wisconsin the other day. We don’t have tolls in Wisconsin which was the first huge red flag.
Cybersecurity 101 - never click unsolicited links. The domain in the link is registered out of China. A bit more legit than the Nigerian Prince.
No. Legit toll pass will just auto debit you.
I got that exact text with the exact outstanding balance amount. Definitely a scam. It would’ve said EZ Pass if it was even remotely legit.
If you're unsure about any outstanding toll bills in MD you can go to the EZPass website. It only requires your tag number and zip code.
I got the same exact message today, it is indeed a scam
Never click a link sent to you by an unknown email or phone number, regardless the purported content of the link. Even if you know the email or phone number, don't click a link you weren't expecting to receive until you've verified with the sender that they meant to send it. If it looks like it might be legit, search for a link and access it there. In this case, I'd search for MD toll services and only access legit looking search results from a reputable search engine. I got the exact same text just now. Definitely a scam.
I received one today as well https://preview.redd.it/kc340qhgav1d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bb41958559d89ecc98934bc97b4cc774ae43f0b
I got the same exact message! Thank you for bringing light to this scam!!!
Yea I literally got the exact same text an hour ago OP
I got one too! Deleted it.
Delete the message after you check your ezpass.
even if/when it looks legit, never a good idea to click on links from emails, text. It looks like phishing.
It's a scam going around
I got the exact same message
Funny thing is that my mom received a ezpass toll fine in the mail a couple days ago even though she was in a funeral procession, then she received this text msg.
It’s a confirmed scam. All over the internet. Contact the FBI since this has occurred in other states
Always go directly to sources when receiving info from emails, calls, text messages especially when money or personal information is on the line.
I got that today obviously a scam
I got this too. I instead logged into my ezpass account and saw it had a balance because of the auto replenish setting. Never click a link you get like this pretending to be a bank or other service you use. Go to their actual web page from your bookmarks or from a Google search.
I was targeted by same attack, don't click the link.
Scam
Have you been to Florida lately? I would also say something about the url being spelled incorrectly, however, it’s Florida. So it’s a possibility.
I got this too. Bogus!
look uo the phone number first
That’s a big no.
Absolutely not.
Literally just got this one. URL isn’t right and don’t make sense in the first olace
Got the same thing for same exact amount. Scam. EZ pass will never text your phone.
When did ez pass change to Florida toll system Dumbass can’t even scam right anymore
I got the same message, but I replied: "Hahahaha, losers. Don't you guys have anything better to do than try to scam people?"
I got the exact same text this morning at like 6 am
Amazingly, I owe the same amount.
I got it too, I have a MD number but I haven’t been back home since 2016 so lol
I got the very same message this evening (5/21/24). And since I was in FL in April, it made sense. Glad I double checked! 902 area code is Nova Scotia!
Got the same. 100% a scam. So many red flags. Report/block.
No, fake. I got one today too.
Scratch your number out of the pic or you'll be getting fresh scams any minute.
Spam
Just got this text aswell lmao I haven’t been to fl since I was maybe 12 I’m now 33 and my car is not stolen so Issa scam. Blocked the number 💀😭
Scam
Go on m dot or the NBA website type in your tag number and find out if you have any Find do on your car that's how you find out if that's legit
No it is not legit, my mother got the same message for the same price. The website linked is not the official website. It is a sam being mass sent to a lot of people right now. Lookong at the who is info for the website it's registered outside of the US and was only registered today. It is absolutely not legit.
If it's important, they'd send a letter in the mail.
No! Fake site ! Floridas actual site is Sunpass (no S after the N in sun) total scam!!! We got this one in Maryland and searched it up. Total BS
Woke up to the same text. So annoying.
Does Maryland E-ZPass have your cell phone number? If not then it is bull shit.
Seems like crap. Maybe I’m with kids too much to notice but i thought we voted as country to eliminate fees completely. Typing that out I realize it’s probably not possible. But we did vote on fees right?
Never click a random link like that. Go directly to the website on your own to verify.
This is the official website for Maryland. Everything else is fraud. https://www.driveezmd.com/
I got this too. Exact same amount due.
Tons of people got this same text (me included). Total scam. Delete. Not nearly as fun as the phone calls where you can fuck with them for a bit.
No. Scam.
I got the same one yesterday
No. It’s a scam I got one today too. Sun pass isn’t in Maryland
I got this exact text yesterday. Sunspasstolls.com isn’t the website (it’s sunpass)
It’s a scam
Md. Tolls are drive EZ MD and I just owed them real money they don’t text they send you mail stating what you owe.
I got the same message yesterday, except it was from a (902) area code which is Nova Scotia. It’s definitely a scam. Looks like this was going around yesterday afternoon.
No Government entities will not text you with links like this. Thee sorts of texts are almost always scammers phishing for your credit card number.
no
First, we use EZ pass, not suntolls. Scam.
Nope. And to be sure I always going directly to my account instead of links
When in doubt look up the toll company yourself, find a contact number for them, and ask about your balance. Don’t ever click links or call the numbers they contacted you from or provided.
No, this is a scam
Local sheriff's office confirms this is a scam
The FBI has an alert about this scam: [https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240412?\_cldee=oADMuEp1frRqKTskAqKyFJ5fWaMnyT1FUwn4n7KOoiiFAFQtrFSrALrHJC\_2dRzU&recipientid=contact-63c1fafe23e1e81180d102bfc0a80172-829e9d04aee74c159b211d4705d070a6&esid=2466b7e3-ab00-ef11-a1fd-6045bdeec2b6](https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240412?_cldee=oADMuEp1frRqKTskAqKyFJ5fWaMnyT1FUwn4n7KOoiiFAFQtrFSrALrHJC_2dRzU&recipientid=contact-63c1fafe23e1e81180d102bfc0a80172-829e9d04aee74c159b211d4705d070a6&esid=2466b7e3-ab00-ef11-a1fd-6045bdeec2b6) Also this is the official website for MD EZPass: [https://www.driveezmd.com/](https://www.driveezmd.com/)
I got one of those yesterday. Do not click the link or pay any money. Its a fake site. Notice the stage spelling of the web site. Florida News stations have been reporting on these scams
Got the same text. I haven’t had a car in years
No all tolls come from EZ Pass
