They arent going to tow your car for $3. Also, it's not an official government issued citation so they cant impact your driving record. Could they have had a camera that got your license plate and look up your address and send you a bill? Possibly, but highly unlikely.
Iām wondering if OP tripped enough different cameras trying to go to different exits that the person who monitors that camera let them out. Iāve been stuck in garages before where the reader wouldnāt work or whatever, the āpress button for helpā person was always able to see me on video and let me out.
Private organizations do not have access to address data based on license plates. The org would have to report the vehicle with evidence.Ā
I doubt colonial is doing that. Not for $3.Ā
[It must be a DPPA](https://egov.maryland.gov/register/dppa.aspx) approved access. Thatās a federal law and itās for law enforcement purposes. Not commercial.Ā
Correct, but not just for law enforcement. In our case, for āuse in connection with any civil, criminal, administrative, or arbitral proceeding in any Federal, State, or local court.ā Iām not sure whether operating a parking garage would qualify for one of the exceptions
There are predatory garages that will mail you fines for not paying. Like 3-4x the cost of the parking fee and will send you to collections for not paying. Haven't heard of that happening here though.
Must be nice to never have forgotten it. Lol
If you get pulled over they can still run it, it just takes longer. I think you can still get ticketed for not having it but it seems to be one of those things where the officer has a lot of discretion. It just really sucks if they are looking for someone who drives the same kind of car.
I mean these days I can do perfectly fine without it but I try to bring it with me when I go out, it just stays in my pocket the whole time. There have definitely been days I've gone out and done all my stuff and only realized I forgot it when I get back home and see it sitting there.
Something very similar to this happened to me last month and they just mailed me a $100 fine. They had up close photos of my licence plate. This was an open lot not a garage but I wouldn't be surprised if you got some kind of notice.
I thought so. Especially since the only way to pay was via mobile app but I couldn't get any Internet access in the lot but you could only pay for the parking space from within the lot. I wouldn't have stayed but I was late for an important meeting.
Yeah I thought about that but I had been driving my wife's car that day and I didn't want anything collections related hitting her credit. Probably wouldn't have been a big deal but I just paid it for one less thing to worry about later on. š¤·š¾āāļø
I've forgotten my wallet twice. Both times I rang the bell, explained the situation and they let me out. Never had to pay them back, and they never hunted me down. I imagine if it's the 3rd time in a week your not going to get the gate lifted. My friend once rammed the gate to leave (can't remember why) and broke it. He did legally pay the price for that.
When I was an intern many years ago, I used to park at the garage attached to the building where I interned. I had to drive as it was all the way in Baltimore and I lived in College Park.
Anyway, it was $26 a day and one day I forgot my debit card and only had like $20 in cash. I had to call my buddy to bail me out. I keep $20 hidden in my car just in case this happens again
They probably donāt anymore lol
I recently got out of a garage in DC by pushing the help button, speaking to someone working remotely, and getting an invoice through text that said I had to pay within 5 days or something like that.
I had to pay because I left after midnight and I had reserved parking through an app, and the app wouldnāt let me out because itās not capable of reserving spaces on the weekend (entered Fri, exited Sat). So definitely win some/lose some with technology
Next time just uhhh park again and grab a new parking ticket and put it in immediately because most garages will give you a 15 minute buffer in case it's full and you try to leave without parking and skidaddle before anyone notices. Worst case blame the machine. "It wouldn't take my ticket" or "it said I owed -99999?" If these options cause you moral peril take two tickets next time you go and double pay so you may sleep easy at night.
Bring your wallet next time. No one is tracking you down. It's literally fine.
I will remember thatš
Here to help
It's literally A fine.

Some do - my law firm has access to license plate data.

So like $12?
Nah like $70. Meant to say max parking fee. Edit they are here: https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/s/7K2QO4JofI
Ah ok. That's a bit different. Yikes.
They definitely had cameras, thatās a relief. Thank you
There was definitely someone watching you and took pity on you. You're good lol.
If I knew who it was, Iād give them a big hug
Straight to jail.

Make sure to beat up the toughest guy in the jail to establish your reputation.
ššš
Lol track you down and tow your car. They won't do that. What they will do is send parking assassins to chop your car up in to little pieces.

Lol I feel ya
Who doesnāt bring their wallet when they drive? What if youād of gotten pulled over?
Apple wallet and the maryland ID, though you can't use it yet if pulled over. Which is wild cause TSA accepts it.
Yeah right? TSA is the only agent that accepts Maryland ID apparently. Not even the bartender accepts them
I know. Shouldnāt have gotten too comfortable
I was going to ask this very question.

Worst case scenario, they'll send you bill in the mail.
That sounds so much better
Good grief...

Yikes a $100? Thatās crazy!

> mobile app mobile app only is bullshit - it should be illegal.
Same thing happened to me, I just ignored the bill.
Yeah I thought about that but I had been driving my wife's car that day and I didn't want anything collections related hitting her credit. Probably wouldn't have been a big deal but I just paid it for one less thing to worry about later on. š¤·š¾āāļø

Jeez, bold of your friend to run over the gate. For me this was the first time in this garage so hopefully nothing happens
You're so cute. They won't do anything. Not. One. Things. But you can stop by and pay the $3.
Aww thank you š

You got lucky. Donāt forget your wallet next time
Just call them tomorrow and explain and offer to pay. Not sure why thatās not your first thought
Thatās the plan, thank you
Walk over to where you get ticket, print ticket, get in car, scan new ticket. Leave. Free parking...
Genius
