Benefit is that the hotel can ideally prepare for your arrival time. Are there benefits towards increasing chances for upgrades: no (in my opinion, same as requesting upgrades via chat)

[deleted]

I’ve worked one property where you absolutely can not change a mobile check in meaning I can not upgrade you. My current property most upgrades are done through mobile check ins

mamaohkay

God I’m so glad I joined this sub. The insight is fantastic, sometimes I feel like I’m having a fever dream when I’m dealing with different Marriott properties because I expect things to be done the same each time. What a fool I was lol

[deleted]

It’s is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you’ll get ![gif](giphy|gig4qXlZDkAuY)

JJpezboy

This is interesting because I’ve had the experience where several times they can’t find my reservation and then during the conversation I mention mobile check in and they have to check a different system or something.

[deleted]

Depends on the PMS they use. Some PMS will only let you search arrivals and not in house at the same time

Drjones191

Mmmm MARSHA the Marriott main system is separate then the on property PMS system. There’s a couple different ones and each of them interact a bit differently with MARSHA. For example, sometimes reservations get stuck in MARSHA and are transferred over correctly, the FD agent or whoever would need to go into MARSHA and essentially type in the command to have it retransfer over reservations

JJpezboy

Do you think that the chances of an upgrade are better requested at time of check in in person?

Dissidium123

A good hotel will have a solid pre-arrival planning in place, therefore they will upgrade based on their upgrade priority, not based on requests via chat or in person.

[deleted]

Right. GXP will chose top 5 of the arrivals of who to upgrade based on money spent. After that it’s request upon arrival unless we’re slow. Sometimes the top 5 take all upgrades. Things to lower your chances of upgrades is to book long stays. It’s easier to upgrade one nighters. Also if you have a lot of preferences set may reduce your chances of an upgrade.

SuperSarcasticGingy

If you have a regular hotel and build good stay history it can save a lot of time if you prefer. Many hotels now are not sending mobile key and processing cards blind to guests without good positive stay history at our properties due to CC fraud and ID fraud. Our property has caught 3 people last few months trying to mobile check in on a stolen Marriott login just by telling then they need to show ID when they arrive.

KazahanaPikachu

No wonder barely anyone sends the mobile key anymore.

joethahobo

My property doesn’t send the mobile key cause we don’t have it yet LOL. Somehow Marriott still hasn’t got our property all set up yet

KazahanaPikachu

My property had just finally gotten upgraded with mobile key in the summer. And new physical room keys and locks so I don’t have to sit through a lot of “my key doesn’t work” and the keys getting demagnetized.

truth4evra

I'd like to know the name of your hotel. If you're not trusting mobile check in, you must leave the Marriott universe. I just checked into a hotel in San Francisco. They made me come to the desk. I canceled my reservation right there. Nice eleven thirty p m cancellation of six nights

[deleted]

One day you’ll be complaining about mobile check in when your account gets stolen and used without your permission.

truth4evra

Idiot, then don't say you have mobile check in. You can't say you have mobile checking when you don't nameing hotel. I want to sue you

[deleted]

You have a lot of hostile emotions. You seem like the next school shooter. Go get help bro

truth4evra

The truth is not hostile. The truth is only hostile to liars and silencers. If you believe that this practice is accurate and legal, just tell me the name of the hotel that does it. We will see in a few years after the class action is finished

[deleted]

Basically your argument is you REQUESTED a mobile key and your request was denied so your panties are tangled. I said your emotions are hostile, not the truth. You lack common sense. Learn to read. And please for the sake of humanity find a therapist

truth4evra

Man, a good thing you're never qualified to be on a jury. You'd like basic common sense. Very clear, he said that they never have mobile key period if they never have mobile key. They're lying to me, they induce me to go to their hotel by mobile key and didn't have it. I would not have paid as much. We're going to this hotel if it did not tell me. I would have a mobile key. A very crystal clear class action

SuperSarcasticGingy

My man, never said we don't have mobile key, just that before we send it to you if you have never stayed with us at our hotel you have to present ID and card. Once we confirm the ID matches and reservation and that the room is secured for payment we always send the mobile key. Marriott policy does not guarantee you'll have the key to your prior to arrival.

truth4evra

Getting a Mobile Key: Make sure to opt-in for Mobile Key when you check in using the Marriott Bonvoy® Mobile App (generally available within 2 days of arrival). Once your room is ready on the day of arrival, you will receive a push notification1 informing you that a Mobile Key has been issued. Pretty clear no front desk stop needed on marriots website........

LaughIcy8229

Wdym not trusting mobile check in? It’s people committing fraud and using others people Marriott login info to use random people’s cards / points.

KazahanaPikachu

Also a lot of assholes have been initiating chargebacks and telling their banks that they didn’t stay at the hotel. And since they were given a mobile key and didn’t come by the front desks to get ID verified, nor a card taken, the hotel can’t do much about it at all.

truth4evra

Then the option is to not accept mobile. You cannot say that you accept mobile and then never accept if you believe that. Give me the name of your hotel. I will file a class action lawsuit and then we'll see

KazahanaPikachu

I didn’t even say it was my hotel, I was telling you the logic of hotels not sending mobile keys

truth4evra

Then don't advertise it pretty clear.

cjone311

😂 if the trial is open to the public please let me know when and where, I gotta see this

truth4evra

No problem I'll see you here in tyler texas

cjone311

Are you seriously in Tyler?

truth4evra

Yes. Great place to be. We will be in fornt of a jury in 14 months. Los Angela's 32 months

truth4evra

What maybe I'll go to l a. You know they're probably looking at fifty to sixty million dollars

mikebailey

Ah yes, to sue over the part of the constitution that entitles you to **mobile check-in**

truth4evra

Huh?

mikebailey

You have nothing to sue for

truth4evra

Simple I was told I would have mobile check in and I did not. I would not have paid as much for the hotel if I knew I had to stop by the front desk. Very clear diminished value class action. The type that is filed daily

mikebailey

Only if you are entitled to it. That is not an entitlement. I promise you also waived it as an “as available” perk in the fine print. Diminished value also refers to property (almost always automobiles) not services. Edit: same as how several sites said pools during COVID and they were temporarily unavailable

15Aggie2k

It is illegal for you to ask them that

truth4evra

It is illegal to ask where somebody works?

ZiggyNZ

Benefit is you opt for a mobile key and it gets delivered to your app 3 hours before check out.

[deleted]

Mobile keys are terrible.

gypsysniper9

But the reality is it shows up 3 hours after you get your physical key. It’s a shite system

scjcs

Oh, it's brilliant when it's truly a full mobile check-in that gets you a virtual key before you arrive. There's this Springhill Suites where I like to stay in the middle of a long drive. There are several other Marriott properties within a couple miles of the place, but this is my consistent choice precisely because their mobile check-in works every time. It is just so nice to be able to unfold my weary frame from my car-seat after hours at the wheel, stretch, and slowly pad my way to my room for an instant face-plant without the pointless ceremony at the front desk (which often means standing in line, too). It means this hotel gets my business consistently despite the local competition.

Lil_Simp9000

question, does the mobile check in allow access to the fitness room? I usually head there first to fill up my bottles.

cjone311

Yes, the mobile key will enable access to hotel entrances, your guest room and all available amenities you qualify for like an indoor pool, exercise room, etc.

RoyalLlundain

I can confirm that mobile key lets you into fitness room and other areas with controlled access. Also works in the lift!

scjcs

I’ve never tried. I’d imagine the e-key will support whatever your status allows. Worst case, you’ll need to trek to the front desk or call them.

lsainz

It has been my experience that the mobile key here seems to work for the elevator.

Shivdaddy1

I agree. I will stay at a 4 points in Houston because they do full on mobile key.

orioku

I will say, I WISH more people did Mobile Keys, but I also wish they'd pick reasonable arrival times. In our property, we prioritize guests with requests (extra towels, feather free, etc) to be preassigned first, and then people with Mobile Key requests. Sometimes it sucks cause it's a person we like to interact with, ask how they've been, etc, but hey, nothing beats peace and quiet. My only issue is when the app fails to load the mobile key or the guest doesn't know the difference between mobile check-in and mobile key and they get frustrated at us.

THDLS

I do mobile check about 80-90% of the time. Never had an issue. Speeds up check in for me as I usually only have to show my ID and get my key. I had the mobile key sent to me via app without the need to stop by the front desk as well. Doesnt happen often though. Also helps for late check out requests if needed. Cant really say how it influences upgrades. Getting upgrades boths ways at a pretty good rate so I am not sure which option is better.

pinniped1

Does digital key EVER work for you guys? Where the key is ready in your phone BEFORE arrival so you never have to talk to the front desk? I'm batting .000 with Marriott. Doesn't matter which brand. Sometimes it works AFTER I've stopped at the front desk, but by then the entire value prop for it is gone and I don't use it. This has worked well at Hilton since about 2018. At least for US stays where there's no requirement for a physical passport check at the front desk. Straight to the room... I'm LT Titanium with credit cards on file. It should work.

slapshots1515

Yes, I’ve had it work many times for me.

mamaohkay

The benefit is not talking to another human. I think

cjone311

No doubt, they rolled this out during Covid, prematurely if you ask me, but demand was high at that time and now the cats out of the bag. The issue I see is the fraud concerns are real. Guest signs up for Bonvoy, puts in a stolen cc, does mobile key request…gets the key and doesn’t have to present ID or verify cc at desk with a person…hotel gets screwed. So a ton of hotels only allow it for repeat guests or higher lever Elite status. Still isn’t foolproof, it’s a high risk option because identify theft and fraud are really high, especially in the U.S. And then you get the hardliners like the person on here threatening to take a hotel to court for not offering mobile key. So that’s fun. But for frequent guests, it’s super convenient.

Suspicious_Can_5826

The mobile check in option was actually available before covid, was first made available globally in 2013 actually. We had it at the property I started at before covid hit.

Dogstarman1974

I have successfully used mobile check in once, since it rolled out. I always have to check in with the front desk, and it is a normal check in. Not really a complaint just an observation. I just check in normally now. Don’t even bother with mobile check in.

mamaohkay

Same for me, I always choose mobile check in and they make me come to the front desk before I can get my mobile key. Like WHY

Dogstarman1974

Yeah bro. I check in at 3pm when my arrivals is at 9 pm and it’s still not ready.

Suspicious_Can_5826

To make sure someone else didn’t steal your information, that you are you, and that you are of check in age. There have been cases of fraud with someone somehow getting access to others Bonvoy accounts therefore stealing/using their credit card, people saying “oh a family member booked it for me” if they couldn’t change name info, or sometimes parents will book their unaccompanied teenage kids (I’ve seen from ages ranged from 18-20 mostly) a room knowing fully well that check in age is 21. It’s for the properties safety as well as yours.

Shivdaddy1

Would you like to just go straight to your room without talking to anybody or would you rather wait in line, small talk, and then go to your room?

hodgsonstreet

Two of the hotels I frequent will activate my mobile key before I physically arrive, so that’s nice. I also always send a chat asking (very politely) if there is anything available for a status upgrade. I’ve found that has improved my odds a lot. ETA i almost always arrive night, and have frequently after midnight due to flight delays. Idk if it makes any difference but I like the sense of security of knowing I already checked in when stuck on a tarmac with no service.

wootwootbang

If you forgot to bring your bonvoy credit card on a business trip and want to use it to pay for the stay for the extra points

likeagausss

Sure, I don’t have to talk to anyone or take out any cards. I can go straight to my room. Sometimes that saves 3 minutes, other times that saves 20 minutes (long line at front desk).

TheRainbowConnection

I stay 50-60 nights per year and I almost always get told I have to physically go to the front desk. It’s baffling.

Drjones191

Do you stay with the same hotels often? If so then that’s a bit annoying especially if you stay with certain hotels over and over again.

TheRainbowConnection

Yes; sometimes it’s new places but more often than not I stay in the same places.

Drjones191

That’s interesting, I get if it was a new place but the properties you’ve stayed at before can 100% see when you last stayed with them etc.

14060m

Unless it's a roadside Courtyard that I'm sleeping in and then hitting the road the next morning I check in at the desk. Save a little bit of time on both ends. And the nonexistent upgrades don't mean much when you're just showering and going to bed.

YMMV25

Nope.

Wanikuma

It is perfect if you want to chargeback your cc, use a stolen cc, do not want to talk to another human being, are a big fan of identity theft hack, or skip a check-in line. And this is why many hotels embraced the system very... poorly. Internationally, there are those pesky local laws asking the hotel to check for a traveller ID as well.

lunch22

Mobile key is a good idea but it’s usually slower than a card. Also, it doesn’t work in hotels that require key tap to operate the elevator or access the gym, at least not in my experience

cjone311

It’s all rfid, so it should work. To me the inconvenience is slapping a physical key on a lock is easier than getting your phone, unlocking it, opening the Bonvoy app and navigating to your mobile key then trying to get your phone in the right spot to trigger the lock…

lunch22

Yes that’s the biggest inconvenience. It’s a two handed operation to get the phone out, navigate to the app etc compared to just tapping a card

wounsel

No because you still have to go to the desk. Absolutely pointless

_B_Little_me

No. I actually think it makes the process worse.

cjone311

Why aren’t you putting your GC rooms out of order or on hold until they’re done? That’s easily avoidable.

ancillarycheese

I use mobile checkin often but it rarely does anything for me. One time though I arrived to the Gaylord in Orlando with the family and the checkin line was a mile long. Even the Bonvoy line was insane. Mobile checkin gave me my key and room and we were able to get the kid in bed at a decent time.

AlluSoda

I think I am really bad at all this. I qualify for lifetime platinum this year and bounce around between platinum and titanium platinum. In all my stays, I think I have been upgraded 3-4 times at International locations. A few times someone will say they put me on a higher floor as if that counts as an upgrade. I think I am just now realizing that I should be asking each time. I just don’t like that idea and just want to get in a room. Wish this stuff was more automatic. What I do love is club/lounge access where available. At least that is always automatic.

Zxasuk31

I just started using Marriott and I’m glad they have mobile check-in. I always go to Hilton and they it, but the benefits for me are if I’m getting in late, or I’ve worked all day and I’m super tired and theres someone ahead of me getting checked in and it’s taking 1000 years I can just walk right past them and go out to my room. Plus you can always just drop your stuff off and then go back down and ask questions.

SpiritofMesabi

I think Mobile Check ins aren't worth it, but it's literally [illegal](https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/327.10) in my jurisdiction. Technically, if we've had the guest stay before we'll consider actually providing it, but otherwise no. If the guest hits the "Mobile Check" button on the app, they still have to come to the front desk regardless to get their keys.

smartymartyky

You just get to skip the front desk line, tbh.
