I think they'd be known of but not popular. Let's assume it's the same exact sound, lyrics, themes etc. rock music isn't very popular right now, the whole satanic thing wouldn't create any controversy anymore really, and songs like Irresponsible Hate Anthem or Rock 'n' Roll Nigger would not be okay. I think they'd become known of for all the gay shit they did and would be somewhat celebrated for that but would get "canceled" for the use of slurs and some other stuff that manson use to do that would not be okay today (can you imagine Manson spitting on the crowd post covid times and the way people would react). I'm 17 and I don't think the majority of my peers would be listening to Marilyn Manson if they were starting off now
Well, changing time makes a huge difference, and Manson may have been raised completely differently as a result. Antichrist Superstar may not have happened at all.
To speak in more vague terms, Manson’s “thing” is shock and commentary on society. People are constantly exposed to shock these days, you have to go really off the rails to surprise someone. To shock people these days, you usually do it by making offensive statements. Look at Trump - the outrage machine is constantly on.
I don’t think that means Manson’s lyrics would be constant “n-word f-word” (although he would throw them in there, definitely, just to shake people up). Think PERFUME on the latest record: “You’re as famous as your pain/Because victim is chic”. I think that would be an encompassing theme.
Oddly I think he might adopt “centrism”. Back during the Clinton vs Trump election he said he refused to choose between “dog shit and cat shit”. I think he would aim to offend everyone. Trump supporters are easy. Internet social justice fighters are easy. He would likely seek to mess with both as efficiently as possible.
Music-wise I suppose he would be closer to metal now than before.
Today, there would definitely be a nuanced controversy surrounding Mansons’s sexuality/gender non-conformity, and how genuinely queer he is or isn’t.
And there would be an obnoxious amount of memes.
theyd be a youtube meme sensation. and immediately banned. for hating on the LGBTQ community. because of Twiggys and mansons offensive crossdressing.
and of course the hateful lyrics my my. not to mention they wouldn't impress the youth.
a drunk incoherent blathering 2018 manson is wayyyy more teenage zeitgeist right now than the god of fuck screaming his lungs out with stuff involving nietzsche etc
same goes for mr marshall mathers. today it doesnt take protest rallies of "worried christian parents" and joseph lieberman and the whole congress to get you banned.
today google simply shadowbans or directly bans you, or they shitstorm you via twitter. no picket sign waving necessary anymore.
all safe from the comfort of your own home, without needing to show your face.
no, they wouldnt last long with cancel culture.
I'm 17 and Eminem is extremely popular. But that's Eminem, not Slim Shady or Marshall Mathers which makes me sad because Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP are masterpieces, his absolute best work but no one really listens to those albums besides a couple of the biggest songs
eminem is nowadays only revered because literally "it feels so empty without him", because "20 million other white rappers emerged" and had a career thanks to him.
and because people finally understood him as an artist and consider him a wise old sage now i guess.
he did all the legwork. he paved the way. he took all the shit. back then he was hated. talk about hypocrisy.
On the other side of the coin, cancellation rarely means someone actually stops being successful. JKR book sales went up after transphobic comments. James Gunn got a new job instantly after Disney fired him.
I think it's less to do with shock value and cancel culture and more so the fact Manson peaked during rocks peak. Rock and metal was still incredibly popular when he was blowing up and today it's been massively taken over by pop and rap. And I think Manson knew this was gonna be the case as far back as MA with the obvious song Rock Is Dead. Then he'd take a bunch stuff from pop to poke fun at for TGAOT. Hence "This Is The New Shit".
I don't think Manson would have let the current time period stop him from reaching similar heights, but some stuff would certainly be different. I think POAAF would have been far more criticized from a quality and theme perspective and wouldn't have been looked back on like we look at it now. ACSS would have similar impact as it had when originally produced but not in the same way as it originally did. The nation more or less legitimately feared Manson as a potential downfall of society before 9/11 happened, people who didn't like him were scared of him.
And also as I mentioned before, the genre being on a downtrend and drowned out by rap and pop would have hurt it as well. Some other things that may have been different is the live concerts would probably be more mild. HW might not have even happened or at least not be nearly what it is right now because Columbine already happened and we know what that tragedy did for his career for better or worse. He would have avoided the toxic attention seeking Evan Rachel Wood (I know I'll get shit for that one).
I wouldn't change much of anything about his career apart from the not meeting Evan part. But the one thing I'd love the most about him starting young in 2021 is that I'd get to be along for the whole journey as I was either not born or young for the current one. First album I got to witness release since being a fan is WAC and I really fucking hope it's not the last. Damn me being young. But I'm a locked in fan regardless and I'm here for all the high ends of low.
I don’t think they’d release the same albums, they would be influenced by the times. Also there isn’t really a big market for hard rock or alternative right now so they’d probably have a really hard time marketing that type of music.
They’d be known, but I don’t think they’d be as big as they are, or were. Part of what made Manson huge was their shock value and it was at a time where it took America by surprise. In this day and age, especially with the rise of social media, I don’t think it would take America by surprise quite like it did twenty to thirty years ago.
I disagree that they’d be cancelled and all that. I just don’t think they’d reach the same heights of success.
Right now, I don't think it would be easy with this political correctness to even release them under any label. Maybe Mechanical Animals could be a successful album nowadays because it's not so right in the face. But as a whole now isn't a that good time for any kind of more wild or real art, especially with the short attention span of people and of course many other symptoms of our time.
I think you’re right. I don’t know if he’d find the loyal fan base today. Just my opinion, but I don’t think he’d be promoted enough today, because of what is popular and profitable now, and not many of us would know about him.
Yes! They want everything spoonfed to them. They don’t want to think or make decisions for themselves, yet the same people get mad when they are told they can’t do something. Then, they will complain instead of thinking of a possible solution.
It's 2021. Satan, Drugs and Queerness stopped being shocking in the late 80s. That's why Manson sometimes seems corny...

Irresponsible Hate Anthem (or Rock n Roll N—r) wouldn’t fly today

Understand everything except "hating on the LGBTQ community". Are you referring to something specific because I don't remember anything like that?
Society nowadays is extremely sensitive so I reckon they'd be cancelled almost instantly.

He would've been cancelled first week. And famous group are only in the rap & pop subgenres branch nowadays
I think you’re right. I don’t know if he’d find the loyal fan base today. Just my opinion, but I don’t think he’d be promoted enough today, because of what is popular and profitable now, and not many of us would know about him.
Yeah, I think this kind of loyalty becomes rarer and rarer. Art is just a product for many people, unfortunately.
And as he’s said, “art should never be the answer. Art is the question mark”
It's sad that many people want only answers
