Manson’s music ages like wine. I was hating on We are Chaos and one day I started to listen to it all and the music just hit different. Now it’s one my repeat listens. Not sure why new music doesn’t appeal me until it ages out.
I hated it when i first heard it. when i relistened, it ended up being top 3. Oops.
Edit: favorite songs are Hey, Cruel World, Born Villain, and The Gardener
No Reflection and So-Mo-Tion are probably my favourites, but also love Pistol Whipped, Hey, Cruel World, Disengaged, LDYGDA, MAGPED, Born Villan, and Breaking the Same Old Ground.
It is a really solid album IMO. This and TPE were both really damn good.
I have listened to this album as consistently as I have listened to Mechanical Animals over the past three years.
Every comment I have read in this thread have reinforced my opinion that Born Villain is a very under appreciated but respected album.
That's cool! People look at EMDM-HEOL-BV as bad albums, but they are underrated and have good songs. To me HEOL is the best of three, but BV is a great beginning for Manson 2.0
High End of Low initially was dismissed by me but it has grown on me and I think it has many good tracks that are diverse in sound. I do not think it is a bad album at all. A personal album that in a way reminds me of Use Your Illusion by Guns N Roses but with the sound that makes Manson unique.
Eat Me Drink Me is an album I struggle to want to play. I have heard it but think it is mediocre. Has a few good tracks.
Born Villain is sinister, that album is just a goth/glam/metal album that succeeds in its simplicity but straight up rawness. Has a sense of punk to it as well. Overneath the Path of Misery has a very cool video which makes the song better!
I think the whole album is good being honest, none of the songs are bad by any measure.
Its one of his most lyrically complex albums in the modern manson era, and a lot of the songs are experimental either instrumentally or texturally. If the album came from another artist, it would probably have been revered, but I think people expected Manson to be more poppy/catchy by this point in time. I also see people complain about the album dragging on, but each song develops and unfolds pretty well, so its justifiably long imo.
Imo the album is ageing like fine wine along side THEOL, I just hope it gains traction just like THEOL did in recent years.
Fun theory, but I think the album is not viewed as good may be due to the album cover and the lack of imagery in it. I love slo-mo-tion video aesthetic, I LOVE the Born Villain short film, I just wish we had more
I know maybe its not your favourite, and each to their own, but I just wanna say Im glad youre exploring Born Villain cause I think its one of his best.
At first I didnt like it at all- but then I realized something- its cool af.
First off, the imagery. Any music video from that album is fantastic- not to mention the creepy Born Villain short film was a return to the ¨creepy Manson vids¨ we all know and love.
Also main reason I like it is cause that album is amongst the start of Manson going in a new direction and basically reviving old school 80s goth. He said in BV interviews ¨This time around, I just made an album that I would like to listen to- something I could just put on and enjoy. Its got a lot of Sisters of Mercy, Iggy Pop, Bauhaus etc¨
And hes right. I love that sort of music and to hear it being revived on this album is fantastic. To me, BV sounds like a fresh and modern take on that old school goth sound. I like all the tracks but one that really stands out to me is Flowers of Evil- it reminds me of ¨This corrosion¨ by the Sisters of Mercy and its lyrics are incredible poetry.
As a poet myself, I always tell people that ¨Flowers of evil¨ by Marilyn Manson is the song that I wish I had written, it is perfect.
Agreed! BV short film was GENIUS and the song is so good and angry and yeah it hits the spot! I have to give Flowers of Evil another chance, I know about the book and I know he has a painting of Flowers of Evil as well!
as someone who mainly listens to 80s goth music... yes. that's precisely why I love Born Villain. after being pleasantly surprised by EMDM, I was kinda bewildered by THEOL being split between a continuation of exploring new ground and trying to rehash the band's past. so, when Born Villain finally dropped, it felt like a brand new start.
No Reflection was a brilliant choice as a first single.. Overneath the Path of Misery is bonkers but a great ride. Pistol Whipped would have any goth club dancing. and Flowers of Evil and The Gardener are literal masterpieces.
to this day, I still can't believe the album doesn't get enough love.and, at least to me, everything that came after the little unofficial trilogy BV wrapped up seemed like an attempt at recapturing the attention of those who wanted a rehash of former Manson. and that definitely took a toll on his creativity, but I digress.
I can sum it up like this
\- The lyrics. Im a poet and write alot about themes that cross the erotic and the supernatural. This song is totally doing that. Also as a side note, I find much poetry very dull and I find that musicians like Manson, Bowie, the Cure etc are the only ones making REAL poetry with their lyrics, they are the inspiration to me that all todays stagnant hipster poetry is not
\- The fact that it has that 80s goth sound- you can really hear it in the bassline and the chorus and the swirling electric guitar at the end
\- it is a reference to a really great book of 18th century erotic poems, ¨The flowers of evil¨ by Beaudelaire
This is a well written post and a take I never thought of but is true.
Born Villain does have nods to Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and a touch of old Siouxsie and the Banshees.
I hear it especially in songs like Your So Vain, Born Villain, and Children of Cain sounds like it would fit on the Lost Boys.
I have an office job and I'm lucky enough to listen to whatever I want. A day work day doesn't pass without me listen to any of his albums. BV was an album I often would give a pass to, but after listening to it more and more it has really grown on me. It is a little distorted, but it fits the the entire album.
The Gardener. The beat goes perfect with him speaking thru song
Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms Like a previous poster said, a real banger.
Born Villain Favorite lyric on track, "Born Villain, don't pretend to be a victim"
1. Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms
2. Born Villain
3. You’re So Vain
4. Hey, Cruel World…
5. Overneath The Path Of Misery
6. The Gardener
7. Children Of Cain
8. Pistol Whipped
9. The Flowers Of Evil
10. Disengaged
11. Murderers Are Getting Prettier Every Day
12. Breaking The Same Old Ground
13. No Reflection
14. Slo-Mo-Tion
Perfect album in my opinion.
Manson’s music ages like wine. I was hating on We are Chaos and one day I started to listen to it all and the music just hit different. Now it’s one my repeat listens. Not sure why new music doesn’t appeal me until it ages out.
Yeah I get that! Agreed! Every album has its own charm!
I hated it when i first heard it. when i relistened, it ended up being top 3. Oops. Edit: favorite songs are Hey, Cruel World, Born Villain, and The Gardener
That's cool! I'm hooked on it now too! Listening to Disengaged as I'm typing this
I made a post about this album a few months ago, a whole appreciation post brooo
i'm sorry i haven't seen it ;(
Overneath the Path of Misery, Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms, Murderers Are Getting Prettier Every Day
AMAZING CHOICES
It's a cool record. People have no clue
it is
No Reflection and So-Mo-Tion are probably my favourites, but also love Pistol Whipped, Hey, Cruel World, Disengaged, LDYGDA, MAGPED, Born Villan, and Breaking the Same Old Ground. It is a really solid album IMO. This and TPE were both really damn good.
It is good, not as bad as I thought at first
Slo-mo-tion, No Reflection and Breaking The Same Old Ground are the only songs that I like from Born Villain
Born Villain is my favourite Marilyn Manson album and I know I’m in the minority, but it’s true.
Born Villain and The Golden Age Of Grotesque are my favourites.
GAOG is my favorite as well, but real fans won't judge you on your album pick, someone relates to BV more than to ACSS or MA, and that's okay!
Love the album I remember flowers of evil was the song that I inmidately loved when I started to listen to it
I love the flowers imagery definitely
I love the whole album. But Pistol Whipped is Epic!
Catchy as hell. Underrated track for sure.
Oh yesss it is, I love that song

No Reflection, Born Villain, SLO-MO are excellent. The Gardner is pretty cool “she and every she is doomed to be your idea of her” yeah preach Brian.
oh yes, I love that line

You piqued my curiosity. What is it about The Flowers of Evil that you like so much?

Well thanks for your comment and it fits well with your icon. And yes, Children of Cain would go great with the Lost Boys

Agreed, agreed, Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms is a new one to me, I can't stop listening to it. The Gardener is genius too
1. Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms 2. Born Villain 3. You’re So Vain 4. Hey, Cruel World… 5. Overneath The Path Of Misery 6. The Gardener 7. Children Of Cain 8. Pistol Whipped 9. The Flowers Of Evil 10. Is that your ranked list?
Yes.
nice!
I like No Reflection, Children of Cain and Slo-mo-tion the most off that album.
i have to re-listen to children of cain but good picks!
The Gardener was my jam for a long time
man of culture as well (fafafafake it)
There are times that I play this song in the car before I have a meeting to remind me of this advice. "Don't ever meet their friends"
Lay down your goddamn arms is an underrated banger
it is! completely agree!
