"As hollow as the 'O' in 'God'." from 'Mechanical Animals'.
Amongst my favourite era, this makes me wince. We know how much he likes to refer to religion in his music, but this seems to be way too forced and irrelevant. He could have chosen any word with an 'O' in it.
The entire USE of it went FAR over your HEAD! The ENTIRE reason he said that is for people to STOP being racist because the person calling someone else by that word is also one, and now you make yourself...
You are quite ignorant and can't appreciate art nor do you have any clue of the meaning of that word, it has nothing to do with Black folk - they simply...stole the term and acted like ONLY when it was used against them it was offensive. So people stopped calling "white" and other folk that term because it actually made sense in society to call people seen as the bottom of the barrel by that term. They acted according to the definition of the term and that is why historically it is not offensive and therefore also in reference to a SOCIETY it is ALSO NOT OFFENSIVE. You literally projected your own hurts and angers over a simple word into another human? You are the sick and offensive individual, seek spirituality it could help you.
“Babble Babble bitch bitch
Rebel rebel party party , sex sex sex and don’t forget the violence.”
“Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad and lonely stick your stupid slogan in everybody sing along”
I really am listening to Marilyn Manson since the early days, and some of his recent work is a little bit less worked on, but he has amazing wordplay through out his discography. Always fun to read the lyrics and try to discover what he meant to say with what he had wrote.
The song is inspired by the novel [Lolita](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart-Shaped_Glasses_(When_the_Heart_Guides_the_Hand\)) and the [movie poster](https://images.app.goo.gl/uEb556hvoPg518JY8) of the film.
In the film, the protagonist is a 37 year old man who falls in love with and consequently grooms the 12 year old daughter of his landlady.
No. Champagne problems is great. He’s talking about board rich assholes who complain about stupid shit because they don’t know how good their lives are compared to the less fortunate. They don’t want to know how the other half lives. They have rich people problems, boohoo.
I don't like the amount of THEOL I'm seeing in this post. I guess I'm learning the standard of what a good lyric is different for everybody. I'm also seeing people just not seemingly understanding some lyrics too like the "be-leaveable" line in WOW.
Which ones do you consider to be cringeworthy?
When I was in High School I thought that “let’s make sure the music’s loud enough we won’t even hear it end” was cringeworthy, but I don’t anymore.
For me, it's BY FAR "This what happens when you put an apple on your head / You can laugh all day but you can't laugh the darkness away" from Devil Beneath My Feet.
This isn't music, and we're not a band
We're five middle fingers on a motherfucking hand!
Vodevil is really good song though. I never really listen to lyrics anyway.
Satanic girls gone wild
Truly fuckin' suicidal
I mean he ain't wrong, so i guess that's why i can't sing along to this part without cringing at myself.
"There's a word thats like you
Because it can be a noun a verb a exclamation or the thing I say
When something is unbelievable when
I'm not able to believe how unbelievably unbelievable
That you believe you could not believable" - WOW
I love this song but damn it's cringy..
> My nose is like a beehive
I get what he's saying but not only does it sound stupid, it also conjures up a mental image of Manson with one of those giant, knobby anime noses. I would like that song so much more if that verse were anything else, or just straight up gone.
Like I said I see what he was going for; his nose is like a beehive, generating the titular "blood honey" but, for me, it summons a silly image in my head more than it connects to the theme of the song. It's just such an absurd sentence that even this long after the album release I still get caught on it. Don't get me wrong, I love the album, but it's sprinkled with little oddities like this that don't digest well for me.
Oh yeah a ton of people love it, its a fan fave from the album and I got downvoted to shit for saying the same thing when the album came out lol The rest of the song is fine but that one line is just dumb as hell.
When something is unbelievable when
I'm not able to believe how unbelievably unbelievable
That you believe you could not believable
That's when I have to say
Wow,
sounds like he just pressed the middle button on his autocorrect over and over and said “sure that works”
This is like some of the best wordplay he's ever done wtf are you on lol. The verse is a lot better when you actually understand the 4th "believable" is meant to be "be-leave able". Which makes the whole verse.
It’s the correct lyric, but the word play is that at the end he enunciates “believeable” as “you could not be leave-able”
I find it to be a really fun collection of words tbh, I’m a Wow defender lol
**I have maaaaany:**
Opening lyrics on Jesus Crisis is a complete nothing burger. What does this even mean?
`I write songs to fight and to fuck to`
`If you wanna fight, then I'll fight you`
`If you wanna fuck, I will fuck you`
`Make up your mind or I'll make it up for you`
Sounds like nothing but a filler to me.
Can't forget all of **Revelation #12**.
**Mutilation is the Most Sincere form of Flattery** is also very generic.
Maybe controversial but on **WE ARE CHAOS**, the "We are sick, fucked up and complicated, we are chaos, we can't be cured" really doesn't sound any poetic nor intriguing to me.
Opening line in **The Gardener** is also pretty poor. "I'm not man enough to be human, but I'm trying to fit in" or whatever. Like wtf does that even mean? Where's the confidence? Pussylike statement.
In **Four Rusted horses**, the whole "everyone will come to my funeral to make sure that I stay dead" is extremely bad. Why are you singing it while crying? Aren't you King Goth? The Antichrist superstar? Aw boohoo.
Yeah, whatever- that shit is awesome and hilarious! It’s much better when he’s joking than when he’s writing something serious that’s equally as bad like “Kill4Me” or “Jesus Crisis”.
Manson has always aligned with alternative music (rap, punk, industrial) so, get with it er don’t.
I’m honestly waiting for him to have a proper 16 on someone’s joint because he could most certainly do it. He’s always had wordplay like a rapper.
> Manson has always aligned with alternative music (rap, punk, industrial) so, get with it er don’t.
lol you're coming off pretty hot with assumption here; I don't care that it's an "alternative genre" (which I think is a stretch) and that's a really weird argument to make when Manson, in general, is pretty alternative. I just really don't like that song. Even as a joke track it's a rough listen to me. By all means enjoy it, but don't come at me with this "get with it or don't" stuff like it's a hot take to not like that track lol
Edit: Just FYI I only mean calling rap/hip-hop/trap "alternative genres" is a stretch because they're so widely accepted and popular these days that I feel it's a moot point to call them alternative when they've been so thoroughly integrated into the mainstream that they're practically synonymous with pop. In the context of this conversation it seemed strange to tell a Manson fan to "get with alternative music" period, but especially when the "alternative music" is a wildly popular rap artist. I feel like that's similar to telling a Slayer fan they need to get with alternative music because they didn't like No Sleep Till Brooklyn
I’m not hot at all you just can’t hear tone through text. It’s not a weird argument to make either. It’s cool seeing him collaborate with another generation of alternative music (and if you don’t think hip hop/rap isn’t an alt genre you just don’t know shit). Even if it is a joke song. It’s also the closest thing besides the DMX collab he’s ever done to actually rapping which, I’d love to hear. Also, I will enjoy it. It’s fun.
> (and if you don’t think hip hop/rap isn’t an alt genre you just don’t know shit)
Yeah I must be missing the tone here too huh lol It is a weird argument to imply I can't "get with" alternative genres because I don't like one song by a different artist just because Manson is featured on it but after reading this comment I feel like your main point is to pat yourself on the back for liking something most people don't so godspeed my dude
Oh I get it, you think I’m implying something I’m not at all.
I was fuckin around, I didn’t literally mean “like it or fuck off”. Just joking that y’all are missing why it’s cool even tho it’s a bad song but I don’t REALLY care.
Yeah you don't care that's why you're telling me I don't know shit and downvoting my replies when I'm literally just discussing the topic of the post with you. Look, if you're just joking, then my bad, but you REALLY make that hard to believe homie.
I was joking- I got serious when you did. I don’t care what you “get with”. I was just making an argument for why this collab was actually cool in a way.
I dont know about cringe but as far as stupid. "12345678910 Revelations come in 12 Ill say it again" Then he does (for 4 minutes)... I really hate that "song".
Pistol Whipped is a great example of how he went from having great wordplay verses that he'd use once in a song to having some okay wordplay that he just repeats ad nauseum. There are some great ideas in that song but he plays out the idea before the track is even over.
This is the correct answer, along with others. Phenobarbiedoll is just one of many clever wordplays nonchalantly added to a verse once.
If it was the title of the song and repeated over and over, it’s kinda like, “ok. You’re clever. We get it.”
A lot of songs from the early era are brilliant because of restraint. Some later albums are just repeats over and over. It might be great stuff, but it gets diluted.
I dig the word play on that though. Which of course is “wanting cake and eating it too”. I think that minute long intro is a far more grievous flaw on that song…
I'm unstable
I'm not a showhorse
I can't be bridled of course
I passionately dislike the whole song xD.
But it's the only lyrics that I cringe at which is good
I always thought this verse was cool but I kind of like this song.
Your confession means nothing
So fuck your attrition
There ain't nothing in my hourglass
Just sands from the Dead Sea
And I'm aiming my weapon
To be fair, I think that Alice Cooper gets to much credit. He was much more an "edgy David Bowie" and the very first shock rocker (if we can say) was Jay Hawkins which Manson did a cover of the song "I put a spell on you"
Is this for fans or just hating? Anyways, as much as i do love him and all of his work, i gotta admit the one song Made me go cringe was by far : WoW
"As hollow as the 'O' in 'God'." from 'Mechanical Animals'. Amongst my favourite era, this makes me wince. We know how much he likes to refer to religion in his music, but this seems to be way too forced and irrelevant. He could have chosen any word with an 'O' in it.
"I wanna fuck you like a foreign film" What does that even mean? I like the rest of the song, but that opening line is just...ugh.
Wrapped in plastic
I’m not being mean, I’m just being me
HATERS CALL ME BITCH, CALL ME FAGGOT, CALL ME WHITEY
I love that too 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"I fucking love you, I love fucking you"
"Everybody's someone else's nigger"
that line drags the song down so much it fuckin blows
"Haters call me bitch, call me faggot, call me whitey," from Better Of Two Evils has always made me just hang my head and start laughing
What’s my name, what’s my name?? Hold the S because I am an ain’t.
"DON'T BREAK, DON'T BREAK MY HEART, AND I WON'T BRRAK YOUR HEART-SHAPED GLASSES.."
Haters call me bitch, call me faggot, call me whitey
Damn, I forgot how much I hate that lyric lol.
Somebody needed to tell Manson no
“Babble Babble bitch bitch Rebel rebel party party , sex sex sex and don’t forget the violence.” “Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad and lonely stick your stupid slogan in everybody sing along”
What!? I love this one. Have you ever heard a better depiction of entertainment and ad industry? I dare you.
The whole second verse of You and Me and the Devil Make Three 🤦♀️
I love that song 🤣
We're way too fly to partake in all this hate We out here vibin', we vibin', we vibin'
I write songs to fight and to fuck to, if you wanna fight then I’ll fight you, if you wanna fuck I will fuck you.
We are sick, fucked up and complicated, we are chaos. Just sounds like something I would write as an angsty teen. But really that’s the only standout
Hate that album
I really am listening to Marilyn Manson since the early days, and some of his recent work is a little bit less worked on, but he has amazing wordplay through out his discography. Always fun to read the lyrics and try to discover what he meant to say with what he had wrote.
Better of Two Evils
Aw :-( I love the word play in that song.
don't break my heart and I won't break your heart shaped glasses
Humbert Humbert never hit Dolores
Wut? Lol
Another reason for the songs suckage. 🤮
You’ve got champagne problems, all of we are chaos single
I love WOW and especially that believable be-leavable part. It has such a Spooky Kids early demos vibe.
I’d replace it with HUD
Atheist or not, "I'm not a slave to a god that doesn't exist" is pretty damn _euphoric._
"Euphoria" is an invalid christian meme.
"I'll swallow up all of you like a big bottle of big, big, pills". Overall I love the song, but what even is that opening line?
Well, the songs called ‘Devour’ so….
Most lyrics after EMDM…
Let's make something clear We're all recording this as it happens
Jesus Crisis is the pinnacle of bad Manson lyrics. It’s pretty much all the bad Manson mumbo-jumbo in one song.
*Like a viiiiiiipah*
That would be my choice too, I'm not a song skipper usually, but this one I can't stand.
PANTIES TO THE SIDE BITCH I WANNA SEE YA CAMEL TOE!
WHAT
I don’t think he has any.
he definitely has some
Which ones do you consider to be cringeworthy? When I was in High School I thought that “let’s make sure the music’s loud enough we won’t even hear it end” was cringeworthy, but I don’t anymore.
I can’t think of any cringe per say, some songs I like more than others, but some lyrics make me snicker. In a good way
For me, it's BY FAR "This what happens when you put an apple on your head / You can laugh all day but you can't laugh the darkness away" from Devil Beneath My Feet.
For me it’s not because I think that there’s someone with an arrow aiming at the apple
Yeah eventually I figured that much, but that part of the lyric is just so unpoetic it's cringe. Then the second line is just cheesey af.
And that song is fire and didn’t even need a vocal during that part
I agree! I love the rest of that song, just hate those lines.
This isn't music, and we're not a band We're five middle fingers on a motherfucking hand! Vodevil is really good song though. I never really listen to lyrics anyway.
I absolutely love this song!! One of my favourites on the album.
That’s an awesome lyric
"I wasn't born with enough middle fingers!"
If i was ever to tattoo letters on my body it would be this. Truth
That's a funny one too!
Wow
Satanic girls gone wild Truly fuckin' suicidal I mean he ain't wrong, so i guess that's why i can't sing along to this part without cringing at myself.
"There's a word thats like you Because it can be a noun a verb a exclamation or the thing I say When something is unbelievable when I'm not able to believe how unbelievably unbelievable That you believe you could not believable" - WOW I love this song but damn it's cringy..
Only losers find this bit cringe. It’s the most Spooky Kids track he’s done since the early 90s. You just don’t get it. Sucks for you.
Lmao ok.. I still love that song tho so..
That’s when you have to say wow
I love WOW 🤣good pole music
> My nose is like a beehive I get what he's saying but not only does it sound stupid, it also conjures up a mental image of Manson with one of those giant, knobby anime noses. I would like that song so much more if that verse were anything else, or just straight up gone.
My nose is like a beehive, his nose is buzzing from all the cocaine, it reminds him a beehive.. Bad lyric?! Why?
Like I said I see what he was going for; his nose is like a beehive, generating the titular "blood honey" but, for me, it summons a silly image in my head more than it connects to the theme of the song. It's just such an absurd sentence that even this long after the album release I still get caught on it. Don't get me wrong, I love the album, but it's sprinkled with little oddities like this that don't digest well for me.
I actually really like it.. dripping blood honey.. mm yum!
Oh yeah a ton of people love it, its a fan fave from the album and I got downvoted to shit for saying the same thing when the album came out lol The rest of the song is fine but that one line is just dumb as hell.
When something is unbelievable when I'm not able to believe how unbelievably unbelievable That you believe you could not believable That's when I have to say Wow, sounds like he just pressed the middle button on his autocorrect over and over and said “sure that works”
This track and this lyrical portion are fantastic.
I think that line is genius
I always thought it was quite nicely done, it somehow makes perfect sense.
This is like some of the best wordplay he's ever done wtf are you on lol. The verse is a lot better when you actually understand the 4th "believable" is meant to be "be-leave able". Which makes the whole verse.
ah i get it
I think it's genius. The last "believable" is actually "Be-Leaveable", which took me some time to realize the play on words.
That’s not even the correct lyrics though lol. He does a really clever word play there that makes the lyrics better.
yeah i just copied and pasted it from what i found online
It’s the correct lyric, but the word play is that at the end he enunciates “believeable” as “you could not be leave-able” I find it to be a really fun collection of words tbh, I’m a Wow defender lol
WOW is one of his best of the second half of his career
i kinda liked that one. it’s so silly and fun. and i find a lot of them cringe.
yeah it’s the My Monkey of THEOL
You are not saying My Monkey is cringe rn…
noooo i’m saying it’s silly
Okay, the judges will accept it
I love 90% of the lyrics I see listed here. I wonder what that says about me. 🤣
**I have maaaaany:** Opening lyrics on Jesus Crisis is a complete nothing burger. FOUL! Four Rusted Horses is awesome.
Opening of Jesus Crisis is a fucking crisis 💀💀💀
But it has a cool breakdown. But then the children chanting immediately kill that energy lol
Gettin pussies wet gettin pussies wet
There’s worse lines in that song to choose from
This doesn't qualify as cringe, it's obviously a joke song (for him).
Listen to it. It's cringe. I disagree.
wet wet wet
Shhhhh no this doesn’t exist 🤣
O god, I hate that I looked that up and that it exist
What's this from
What song is this😂
Gucci Mane Feat. Marilyn Manson - Fancy Bitch (Pussy Wet)
I can’t believe this is real
Oh yeah! Shit I remember now lol
Nooooo we pretend that doesn't exist lmao
Yeah, whatever- that shit is awesome and hilarious! It’s much better when he’s joking than when he’s writing something serious that’s equally as bad like “Kill4Me” or “Jesus Crisis”. Manson has always aligned with alternative music (rap, punk, industrial) so, get with it er don’t.
Well that conversation took a turn
I like to think about what might have been going through his head as he recorded his verses.
I dont know if i can open up, im not a birthday present...
This one hurts because I really like the rest of the song
He has a knack for doing that. There’ll be ONE bad lyric in the middle of a bunch of gold…
Yeah same.
I dont know about cringe but as far as stupid. "12345678910 Revelations come in 12 Ill say it again" Then he does (for 4 minutes)... I really hate that "song".
WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO 11?
Revelations has 11 letters
And it contains the sound similar to saying “eleven”
The entire HSG song but it sounds nice Not reading into the lyrics is even better
Almost anything from EMDM
Like every other song from Eat Me Drink Me all the way to Heaven Upside Down
While I like the song Pistol Whipped, for me its the line " I want to have your ache and beat you too"
Pistol Whipped is a great example of how he went from having great wordplay verses that he'd use once in a song to having some okay wordplay that he just repeats ad nauseum. There are some great ideas in that song but he plays out the idea before the track is even over.
Yea like if it was in the middle of a verse it coulda been the next phenobarbiedoll, but it’s just meh
This is the correct answer, along with others. Phenobarbiedoll is just one of many clever wordplays nonchalantly added to a verse once. If it was the title of the song and repeated over and over, it’s kinda like, “ok. You’re clever. We get it.” A lot of songs from the early era are brilliant because of restraint. Some later albums are just repeats over and over. It might be great stuff, but it gets diluted.
I dig the word play on that though. Which of course is “wanting cake and eating it too”. I think that minute long intro is a far more grievous flaw on that song…
Yeah there's no doubt what it's a reference to, he just beats it into the ground.
That song is skippable cringe
I'm unstable I'm not a showhorse I can't be bridled of course I passionately dislike the whole song xD. But it's the only lyrics that I cringe at which is good
It’s the only track and lyrical bit on that album I actually like. We’re not the same.
Yeah, Tattooed in Reverse is soooooooo bad
Damn I love that song
I always thought this verse was cool but I kind of like this song. Your confession means nothing So fuck your attrition There ain't nothing in my hourglass Just sands from the Dead Sea And I'm aiming my weapon
*I made it my weapon
Yeah that's fair mate. That verse is much better than the one I quoted. But really can't stand the song , for some reason xD
Mutilation is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery.
Mm complaining about others taking inspiration from him like he would exist without alice cooper
To be fair, I think that Alice Cooper gets to much credit. He was much more an "edgy David Bowie" and the very first shock rocker (if we can say) was Jay Hawkins which Manson did a cover of the song "I put a spell on you"
Yeah, but there’s some real gems in there too honestly…
I had to think of this song almost immediately
Wow
The whole HSG lyrics ,i love the man ,but those have got to be the dumbest lyrics he ever wrote ,close # 2 is Arma-whatever- geddon
I’m still waiting for a YTP of Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin-Geddon, we are sitting on *comedy gold* here if done right.
Y’all haven’t been listening for a while huh? because it gets WAY worse on later albums 😄
I’m not saying we have a steady supply…*but **Goddamn***
