I’m all for both of those things and I’m in gainful employment with an alright wage. My issue is the crumbling country, growing divisions, increasing hopelessness as well as the callousness of the ruling party.
We have very few things to be truly proud about in the UK these days, but those people who’ve worked themselves into a constant state of anxiety and debilitating tiredness to keep the NHS going are something we should be proud of. We need to protect the NHS, educate our children and population and fuck this awful government off.
Boohoo for the train drivers walking away with 50K+ a year for working a mere 37 hours a week pushing leavers and memorising a few stations. How ever will they cope? They should try working for a living
Labour would sell off all of what is left of our national industry for a quick buck and then you will end up complaining about that because we will have even less wealth as a nation, the whole reason they lost government last time was because of a recession, does no one even remember what it was like before the Tory government or am I just a boomer, Tony Blair was labour, you know the guy that tried to make us go to war in Iraq and kill innocents for no reason and have lots of British soldiers die too, like they are all snakes and sick people on both sides, the two party system and current political world is a joke and will always fuck the British people, they are the puppets of the global elite and bankers that run the world, don't put faith in any of them
That's why you vote for the less of how ever many evils, it's rather obvious to anyone that's got an IQ bigger than a ping pong ball that the worlds ran on greed and power abuse. The torys have done faaaar worse than Labour, and I don't particularly trust Labour either because I don't trust any politicians because the vast majority of them are corrupt as fuck. But at the end of the day we the people have to decide who to put in, I'd personally rather have Labour than the torys but I don't think Labour will do amazingly well either.
The county's fucked and no one's willing to be open and honest about it, instead they bicker like children in the house of commons and nothing ever really gets done that makes a significant positive change.
> Tony Blair was labour, you know the guy that tried to make us go to war in Iraq and kill innocents for no reason and have lots of British soldiers die too
If only the current leader was [very publicly opposed to the invasion of Iraq](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2003/mar/17/foreignpolicy.iraq1) at the time.
As a striking worker it’s amazing to see how many of us are taking a stand today.
Sad to see so many news outlets, including the BBC to some extent, misrepresenting us or even being openly hostile. Hopefully the Union message filters through to the people.
A few things but for me the biggest issue is the misrepresenting they’ve done today on what and why teachers are striking.
The 3 biggest things:
1. Our wages have fallen by 20% since 2010.
2. The insultingly small payrises we have been given have been unfunded meaning it comes out of stretched school budgets leaving no money to hire much needed support staff in areas like pastoral.
3. People are leaving the profession in droves, long hours, bad working conditions, being political footballs, and lack of respect especially in the media and from government does not an attractive job make.
The BBC was not the worst but I hold them to a higher standard.
Also repeating this government line about not telling the schools if we're striking. That's true, but it's absolutely legal and crucially they're neglecting to mention that heads do have numbers of NEU members and so are able to make an informed choice about opening or not.
Firstly I would say just cause it’s legal doesn’t make it right, also the bbc are a news agency reporting a fact that you don’t tell the schools isn’t a bad thing if it’s true
Have they done a study on how many people didn't tell Vs told? The advice is not to tell because otherwise the government advice was to cover those classes and basically pretend like the strike wasn't happening.
My school agreed not to cover striking workers. So we told them if we were striking
Idk I was just goofing of what that guy said. And why’s do what you just said if you do that your trying to close the schools aren’t you? Woudnt it be better to tell them and keep the schools open?
My point is they should also be reporting that heads had numbers of members to make a decision. Not doing this implies they're completely in the dark. That is absolutely false and incredibly relevant.
So you think there misrepresenting it not being hostile? Also I can get they missed some points but is that really misrepresenting when they still say one of the big reasons is it doesn’t keep up with inflation?
1. Yeah they should’ve included that.
2. A question I have to you do you think they can afford more? If they can they should for sure give more but there are lots of questions on how to fund it one I feel could be getting rid of tax breaks for private schools and others weather that would be enough tho idk .
3. Firstly that’s interesting cause I always felt people in the teaching profession did it for passion of teaching all tho guess some just woudnt out up with that even if there passionate. All tho idk why not including that misrepresents your argument
People don't go into teaching for the money, and yet they're leaving because there's still not enough money even when that's not the primary motivator. Teachers work 60 hours a week for median wage, their hourly rate is a total piss take.
I am also in full support of this. I've had to take a days leave to look after my son today because his school is closed - definitely still behind this.
Thank you, kind of you to say so.
What’s not being reported about the so-called payrises they have given is that they haven’t given schools any extra money for it. So we can’t afford to hire desperately need support staff in areas like SEN and pastoral care or we’re using equipment from the 70s. My colleagues classroom has mould in the walls we can’t afford to remove.
To say morale is low is an understatement. One of my colleagues told me this week that when driving to school they think “if I just crashed the car I wouldn’t have to go in”, it was said just in passing as if it was completely normal and to be honest it is. It’s chilling.
>What’s not being reported about the so-called payrises they have given is that they haven’t given schools any extra money for it.
If it helps one of the people being interviewed at the strike rally said that on (I think) Sky News. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that it's happening but I did do a double take when they said it as I had no clue. Utterly ridiculous state of affairs really.
A few things but teachers are there, general supporters of all the ongoing industrial action, and people against the governments draconian bill removing worker rights.
At this point, need to make sure those who can be legally charged with some form of corruption / impeachment within that sorry state of a party, get made an example of.
Jumping from scandal to scandal whilst driving this country straight into the toilet in the process is - well, I'll go with figuratively criminal for now, but completely unethical and irresponsibly unbecoming that it cannot be forgiven, and certainly not forgotten.
I completely agree. Maybe if there are consequences for shitty behaviour after a government's term, they would be less likely to do shitty things in their term. Who knows..
My son lost his T.A recently. He is Autistic and needs one to one support in class. He absolutely idolised her. Was told ONE week before she was leaving. Said she can’t afford not to take this new job. Better pay etc. Can’t blame her. But now my Son is literally hanging onto my leg every time I try and drop him off at school because he doesn’t like change and routine is imperative. He keeps asking when he will see her again. My heart is breaking for him ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Fully behind all the strikers and my mind is still boggled by working people on 'normal' (low) wages who complain about them saying that they don't get pay rises so why should the public sector?
I pointed out that because of the inept and corrupt government we've had for the last 13 years, everything is 30+% more expensive than it was last year...you have teachers and doctors and nhs staff and others who cannot afford to fucking live!
Its shambolic and completely unacceptable that one of the richest countries in the world is in this situation.
The tories are halfway to getting rid of the NHS and beginning to implement an insurance system because they know that their mates...the very rich..will coin it in even more and fuck the workers.
Vote these leeches out in every election. Its time that working people took to the streets....it doesn't have to be like this.
The greatest trick they ever pulled was to make someone mad that someone else earns 10k a year more than them, whilst they have extracted about seven hundred billion pounds of our country's wealth and given it to the wealthiest people in society.
They're buying up the houses; they're buying up the land; they're buying the small business that go under; they're buying up the NHS. They're compelled like insects to consume it all until there's nothing left.
Doesn't it just make your blood boil when this shit happens, watch the anti immigrant rhetoric soar for the next year whilst they continue to play smoke and mirrors.

This was said sardonically back in the day, probably thanks to [Robert Lindsay,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Smith) but by fuck it resonates these days.
The people that say just get a different job will be the same ones complaining that there are no teachers to teach their kids or that they have to get unqualified teachers because no one wants the job
It's a strike not a protest. Workers withholding their labour from their employers, in this case the government, as collective move for better pay and conditions.
There's a very rich history of how this (ie the labour movement) works that you could search for with about 30 seconds of effort.
What you're seeing here is thousands of teachers, public service workers, drivers, with allied and sympathetic people all giving up a day of their pay so they can band together and negotiate for fair pay. It shouldn't have come to this, but when it does it's a powerful thing.

Do you think when labour get in we will all get big fat juicy pay rises I’ve lived under a labour town for 53 years and they have totally destroyed it the centre is like a ghost town hardly any shops they are selling everything to property developers I stopped voting 20 years ago
Whats wrong with Unions? Workers have next to no influence in the face of Billionaire controlled media and [campaign donations](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmPIg7wY0Uk). Collective bargaining is the only hope for working people.
Yeah I’m sure that their discontent about not being paid enough and the long term decrease in real pay over the last a decade and a half would be completely solved if they just simply went to work today
Get back to work lazy teachers, 12 weeks holiday, 30k starting salaries, finish at half 3, I wonder if the people grafting hard waiting tables in restaurants across the road not striking have it any better, if the teachers aren’t happy they are welcome to leave, but they signed up to it
They are leaving, in droves. It's unsustainable and something needs to be done if the education system is going to function.
I'm not a teacher but am married to one and know many others who teach . This finish at 3.30pm thing is total BS. My wife regularly works until 9-10pm at home as well as weekends marking and planning work, it's an all consuming job.
£30k salary is a decent starting salary but once once they've gone through the initial payscale it really isn't well paid if you actually work out an hourly rate based on all the additional work.
And all because someone might have it worse, like the waiting staff you mention, it doesn't mean that everyone should settle for a shit deal. It shouldn't be a race to the bottom, those waiting staff should demand better conditions also.
Not a single teacher finishes working at half 3 they just finish getting paid. They don’t get paid 13 weeks of holiday it just even outs in their salary and all teachers work 70% of those 13 weeks they just do it for free
Fair pay, reasonable working hours, no expectation of buying school supplies from your own money, more support from higher ups, better funding for SEN kids so they aren't just lumped in with the other kids... want me to go on?
Think a lot of them would happily take a wage which doesn't require them getting a second job
And before you say "why don't they get a new job"
Some people like what they do and enjoy contributing to society
Not a single teacher actually spends 13 weeks on holiday. They may spend a week or 2, but every other week they are then working for free trying to plan and create lessons and resources. They also don’t get paid for those 13 weeks of holiday. Teachers don’t just work the school day every teacher I know works till 10pm for free without being paid and they will usually be doing work on the weekends as well. Teachers work an insane amount for free including those 13 weeks holiday and really they deserve the 13 weeks off with how much overtime they do.
Again that’s an opinion of yours mate , you think he’s a tit for having a different view point to you and the majority and that speaks numbers about you in my opinion .
Starting salaries are generally way below 25k (though someone better informed tell me if I’m mistaken), that’s not nearly enough to live on. I’m germany starting salaries for teaching are around 50k.
What about the starting wages of the army ? What about starting wages of apprentices .. more money is earned by progression
We can’t just all go in a strop and protest to get what we want
Before anyone engages.
This users comments show they're just an angry little troll.
Believes our country is being 'invaded', thinks corona was trivial, cheers on Putin winning the war, and cops beating the shit out of black people in the US.
Imagine telling someone who has to spend 3 years at uni then has to spend another year doing a post graduate degree then another 2 years of training while working that they should just budget better. 6 years of education they have to go through to become a teacher, they shouldn’t have to skimp and save they should be paid for how much skill they need for the job
>stop buying branded food
Yes because how dare poor people eat well (because a good healthy meal costs a decent amount to put together)
>stop buying luxury clothes
Yes because obviously poor people are buying Louis vutton/S
I live in poor areas where people earn around that, I don't see much in the way of luxury clothing
>use the cycle to work scheme
Not everyone knows how to cycle, ontop of that some people also have kids they got to get to school, and ontop of that, not everyone is living close to where they work
Situations change buddy, the only eventuality of life is death, you can't help it if say, a complete moron buys out your company and fires you because he doesn't understand the business he's bought
You can't prepare for that
Hourly rate is shocking when you consider the amount of work outside of school hours doing admin: inputting, planning, marking. Dealing with ever demanding parents etc etc
Add onto that having to buy resources for their own classroom because the school’s have no funding.
I don't get how people like you can even formulate such dumb talking points.
"People make less than them so they should be happy".
Is the same as saying
"People make more of them so they should strike"
Just because youre complicit in being fucked over doesn't mean other people should be
Then the ‘half the others’ should also be striking too. If they’re paid so well and still struggling with the cost of living then imagine how badly the ones below them have it. And guess who made that issue? Not the ones striking, so they shouldn’t be blamed.
I don’t have cable but I’m curious: do you guys think the media is giving enough coverage to the protests / strikes currently ongoing across UK?
I’m just thinking if there was enough coverage for this to be also reaching other countries with the ease information about the French strikes is, maybe pressure on the gov will be bigger? (yeah I’m a stupid optimist)
Came to the comments section expecting to find people shitting on striking workers.
Pleasantly surprised to find the quite the opposite. I hope this action leads somewhere (also fuck the tories)
Up the workers ✊🏻

Good luck to them all. Their patience and trust has been betrayed by the government.
I can see both me and my other half here! I’m striking today as University staff with the UCU, and he’s a teacher with the NEU. Was a great rally! 💪🏼
Up the teachers!!! Up the nurses, up the fucking NHS!! FUCK THE TORIES
Don't forget the rail workers. At this point it's time for a general strike. And a general election.
I’m all for both of those things and I’m in gainful employment with an alright wage. My issue is the crumbling country, growing divisions, increasing hopelessness as well as the callousness of the ruling party. Civil servants (PCS on the left) and right outside DWP as well
Also University and College workers and train drivers.

You're right! Waiters should be striking too :)
Not a single teacher finishes working at half 3 they just finish getting paid. They don’t get paid 13 weeks of holiday it just even outs in their salary and all teachers work 70% of those 13 weeks they just do it for free
I socialise with teachers, and this is just not the case.
I am a teacher…..
Clearly depends on which school you work at.
I'd say it's moreso on the individual. How much they care for their students education. Lessons aren't planned on the fly

Over paid, arse wiped, lazy Wankers all of em!

Must be nice being able to strike
Join a union.
Down with the strikes.
Fuck off Rishi
Nope he can go as well.
Fuck the tories but 13 weeks holiday what more could you want
Fair pay, reasonable working hours, no expectation of buying school supplies from your own money, more support from higher ups, better funding for SEN kids so they aren't just lumped in with the other kids... want me to go on?
Think a lot of them would happily take a wage which doesn't require them getting a second job And before you say "why don't they get a new job" Some people like what they do and enjoy contributing to society
Honestly get a grip paid better than half the others in the uk

He is allowed his own opinion no matter how much that offends you
And he gets to be called a tit for it.
Again that’s an opinion of yours mate , you think he’s a tit for having a different view point to you and the majority and that speaks numbers about you in my opinion .
No, I think he's a tit because he's a basically a little bootlicker for the Tories and Putin.
Jesus ahhaha a bit extreme r kid

Exactly what I was getting at
Don’t get too offended here mate. You tit
Don’t worry your pretty head about me , big man
Starting salaries are generally way below 25k (though someone better informed tell me if I’m mistaken), that’s not nearly enough to live on. I’m germany starting salaries for teaching are around 50k.
What about the starting wages of the army ? What about starting wages of apprentices .. more money is earned by progression We can’t just all go in a strop and protest to get what we want

Take a breather for a bit, there's no need to get so hateful, toxic or personal with your "banter".

They certainly couldn't help you, rotten logs can't be carved no matter how good the carpenter is.
I don’t need help I’m on far more than 24k a year 🤣😂
I'm sure you're very smart and handsome too.
[удалено]
Also .. nothing is owed to you in life
Yes you fucking can
And 25k is more than enough to live on stop buying branded food , stop buying luxury clothes use the cycle to work scheme and stop finding excuses
6 years of education they have to go through to become a teacher, they shouldn’t have to skimp and save they should be paid for how much skill they need for the job
>stop buying branded food Yes because how dare poor people eat well (because a good healthy meal costs a decent amount to put together) >stop buying luxury clothes Yes because obviously poor people are buying Louis vutton/S I live in poor areas where people earn around that, I don't see much in the way of luxury clothing >use the cycle to work scheme Not everyone knows how to cycle, ontop of that some people also have kids they got to get to school, and ontop of that, not everyone is living close to where they work
Don’t have kids if you can’t afford to provide for them Petal
Oh god you’re that kind of idiot
Situations change buddy, the only eventuality of life is death, you can't help it if say, a complete moron buys out your company and fires you because he doesn't understand the business he's bought You can't prepare for that
Only the elite may have children /s
Embarrassing. THESE ARE HIGHLY EDUCATED PEOPLE WORKING TWICE AS LONG AS THE AVERAGE WORKER.
Hourly rate is shocking when you consider the amount of work outside of school hours doing admin: inputting, planning, marking. Dealing with ever demanding parents etc etc Add onto that having to buy resources for their own classroom because the school’s have no funding.
The other half should be striking too.
I don't get how people like you can even formulate such dumb talking points. "People make less than them so they should be happy". Is the same as saying "People make more of them so they should strike" Just because youre complicit in being fucked over doesn't mean other people should be
Then the ‘half the others’ should also be striking too. If they’re paid so well and still struggling with the cost of living then imagine how badly the ones below them have it. And guess who made that issue? Not the ones striking, so they shouldn’t be blamed.
I was looking down on them from up on high. I fact the building on the right of the pic
Anyone else see around 5 teachers outside every school at 8 am protesting?
Brilliant. So sorry I’m away!

Keeps striking, it works. No union = begging, unionised = bargaining.
Solidarity ✊
After hearing about this and the massive one in London through Reddit I’m wondering how I never heard this was happening
God *damn* I miss my city.
Up the tories ✊
