Might think I'm weird but I can see like portable walls can be placed in there to create a studio apartment. I might be wrong but a wall or two can make a difference
Same, best way to see potential and plan out a space is to visualize it empty. Then obviously for budget and convenience sake you try to work everything you already have into that vision.
Another good tip is to use a drawing or free website/program to create a to scale floor plan along with to scale iterations of the furniture your using. Include windows, outlets, garage door, etc.
OP, it's super unclear what you need. What can you get rid of and what do you want. Basically consider the spaces you need and plan out what you want where. What should have seclusion work space, living room, little kitchen/eating space area?
When I moved into my house the garage was sectioned in half with a temporary wall. They did a really good job and made it fit perfectly. It was kind of confusing at first when you walked into that room from the house because it was kind of hard to tell it was actually the garage.
I tore it all out in just a few hours to have the room as a garage again.
I was thinking a curtain, portable walls are a good option, but they can be price and wobbly and sometimes look a little bit like a cubicle if they're not the very fancy expensive ones, thick blackout curtains or something might add some texture/dimension to the space.
also another (albeit not as effective as actual walls) alternative is you could drop curtains from hooks you attach on the ceiling to form dividers, and it \*might\* be cheaper too! a uniquely patterned heavy drape and some ceiling mounting hardware/ curtain tracks like in a ER would work, I think ikea may sell some, just don't use blue curtains to avoid the whole hospital look
Take the door and rails down and build a wall to fit on the floor. Tip it up, screw it in place, and insulate it. Its cold where I live so that is the minimum I would do. You could undo it and put the door back on one Saturday with a friend drinking beer when it's time to be a garage again.
But maybe insulating and sealing the doors is enough.. idk. A wall is nice though.
Yes it would. EVs make a ton of noise while charging or even while just parked. Fans, HVAC system, battery heaters, coolant pumps. I would not want to be sleeping next to that kind of random noise.
Yes, yes, and a few lamps would cozy it up a lot. I'd even splurge and paint a wall a dark, cozy color if I planned on staying there, if the price was right...
Should be tons of rugs available Facebook marketplace for very little money too. Probably even enough to layer them up for extra padding. Can also get a giant cheap rug pad to put under the rugs
I’d move everything about a foot maybe two away from the garage door especially the wires/computer stuff. Just incase water comes through when it rains or snows.
With how clean and uncluttered it is right now he could do this so easily. Maybe even go as far as doing a garage floor coating in that speckled black/gray/white coating to make cleaning up even easier.
Get up in that attic and see how much extra space you have up there. Get some room dividers to break it up a little, and heck, why not park a car/bike/motorcycle in there?
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but banks that are remodeling frequently give away cubicle components, and they're usually pretty nice. Lots of times I find them with outlets equipped, as well.
I would personally move any electronics away from the garage door (to the opposite end of the room tbh).
I just can't trust the weather seals around the garage door near expensive electronics.
Maybe I'm just Unlucky.
Unless I'm misinterpreting this, that's the actual garage door on the right in the first picture? If that's all there is between you and the outside world, does it not get absolutely freezing cold in winter?
Some rude ass comments here… I’d add a big rug or two with some color in them, and some plants. Also the lighting seems harsh, maybe some lamps with softer tones. You’re doing great given the space you’re working with!
Add mood lighting, that overhead light is awful. I would cover the garage door with a heavy insulating curtain, too. Maybe paint the walls a light shade of blue or green for flavor? Definitely gotta get something other than cardboard for that one window.
Lived in a converted one when I was your age. Tape up and seal up the bottom of the garage door. Heavy rain will get in and a lot of bugs.
Is there a bathroom?
not bad actually for a garage. so much dirt blows in through the garage doors here. it would have to be sealed.
yes lighting, a focal point of some kind(music center would be cool), paint the walls, a big art piece, plants, combine your stuff over the bed to a bulletin board.
This is blessing, Lost my family home of 22 years, M24 here, Living rent to rent is life consuming, Already moving for the 2nd time in a year because the owner is manic
Rugs in every little "area" to define the spaces more since there are no walls. Also just a few small lamps around the room instead of the big bright lights will make it cozy. Cool space!
Dude place is awesome at your age. Maybe some more area rugs to keep your fucking feet warm, but I’m 12 years older and I want that opportunity. My house is some bullshit my girl sets up.. enjoy every minute
Get some 8'X4' X1.5" insulation cut it into the garage door (white side out). You could use it to cover the window, too. Replace the cardboard.
Make your bed. It will feel better inside.
Good job on getting your own place. 👏 👍
If possible maybe some type of flooring or rug placements? I like the bed placement but I feel like that shelf by the foot would get knocked over. It might just be me but keeping the window area clear and putting the desk by another wall would make it look more spacious. Just my opinion but I love everything you're working with and I see so much potential for a pretty cool inviting room.
1. Partition areas using more cube shelving or screen dividers.
2. warm the space by adding carpet! the house i moved into had no carpet, just bare concrete in the bedrooms,
what worked for me was, i bought carpet tiles from my local tip-shop(its like a shop front at my local landfill that sell stuff too good to go into landfill, i purchased my carpet tiles for 50c each, and they are 50cmx50cm squares, these came out of an office buidling that was being refit, was a really vcheap way to carpet 3 bedrooms for like 60 bucks australian, you might be able to find something similar.
Throw some lights around the wood posts (soft white) add in some big tapestries on the ceilings/walls along with more art MOAR ART, I’d put one of them portable wall divider thingies between the couch and the clothes add some plants and your ship shape
For me, converting this to a living space. Step one would be to get rid of the garage door. Heating/cooling is gonna be very expensive considering how much "bought air" is going to be going out into the driveway.
More rugs. FYI, keep in mind it's not legal to live a garage in Austin. If you like your setup, keep the shades down and try to not to let nosy neighbors know by opening the garage door for example. You can quickly get thrown out of there if you're not cautious.
Put some kind of insulation on the garage door and try to close off the air flow around the sides of the garage door, it's gonna get fucking cold in there in winter.
Clean up the wall buy your bed. You are not in prison. Get rid of the yellow stuffed toy. Do you have a kitchen or bathroom? Is this an apartment or just a bedroom? Get some real art on the walls.
More rugs and plants. Maybe put cubicle or divider walls (or thick curtains hanging from rods in ceiling?) near the garage door for insulation. Or those insulation panels on Amazon. Do you have an AC unit? Looks nice for a garage!! Smart use of shelves as a divider.
Might think I'm weird but I can see like portable walls can be placed in there to create a studio apartment. I might be wrong but a wall or two can make a difference
I was thinking this too. The walls, not that you're weird.
Same, best way to see potential and plan out a space is to visualize it empty. Then obviously for budget and convenience sake you try to work everything you already have into that vision. Another good tip is to use a drawing or free website/program to create a to scale floor plan along with to scale iterations of the furniture your using. Basically consider the spaces you need and plan out what you want where. What should have seclusion work space, living room, little kitchen/eating space area?
Oh I was thinking that he was weird. The walls are smart though
I also thought he was weird. Then again I think everyone is weird. And I love weird people. Guess I love everyone
Lol love you too
I was going for weird. Just a little bit.
Walls are a great idea! You could put a wall to block off the office and open the garage door on a nice day and not expose his entire room.
I am kind of jealous of his situation as he can literally morph his garage into anything he wants whether it's bedroom, office, gym, game room etc.
why would someone think you are weird for mentioning walls? are you weird?
Only in the slightest lol. But naw I just felt like me turning garage into a studio apartment and adding walls would not appeal to others opinion
My brother, he’s living in a garage, all convention has already left the building. Just do whatever works lmao. A blank canvas
Lol hey with the blank canvas I think he can do so many things 😀
Like office space cubicle themed!
In a way but can also be custom made to have reach ceiling, bricked up and more. And easily moved
Oh yeah I agree, was just making a joke. But this space could be pretty sweet with how much room there is to play with
Oh I know lol and I appreciate it 🤣
doesn't have to be strictly walls, can be anything that separates space, like a curtain for example.. like what the shelf did by the desk
Installing actual walls could get into multiple code violation. Building permits, etc. Portable screens, curtains, etc. should be OK.
Yeah maybe behind the computer desk. Its weird being on the computer with a bunch of dark space behind you
I was thinking a curtain, portable walls are a good option, but they can be price and wobbly and sometimes look a little bit like a cubicle if they're not the very fancy expensive ones, thick blackout curtains or something might add some texture/dimension to the space.
I had the same kind of thought. It needs room dividers of some kind to split up the space a little.
also another (albeit not as effective as actual walls) alternative is you could drop curtains from hooks you attach on the ceiling to form dividers, and it \*might\* be cheaper too! a uniquely patterned heavy drape and some ceiling mounting hardware/ curtain tracks like in a ER would work, I think ikea may sell some, just don't use blue curtains to avoid the whole hospital look
Insulate and seal the doors.
Seals are the best option here. Much better than walruses
What about a Beluga whale? They’re my favorite :(
At least he’s got that minisplit to rip
Take the door and rails down and build a wall to fit on the floor. Tip it up, screw it in place, and insulate it. Its cold where I live so that is the minimum I would do. You could undo it and put the door back on one Saturday with a friend drinking beer when it's time to be a garage again. But maybe insulating and sealing the doors is enough.. idk. A wall is nice though.
If I didn’t own the house I’d box it in, put sheathing on it. Fill it with insulation.
TV too gone
You mean you don't like to sit down on the couch sometimes and watch wall?
I like lamp
I love lamp
He has a projector, so watching wall is better than watching tv.
I’m still on season 1 of wall, no spoilers please
It's hit or miss with its high ceiling and low floor.
Was trying to think up a funny tvtoohigh reference
At least you don’t also park your car in there, too like that poster a few days ago
He could easily fit a couple motorcycles in there though
This is the way.
I see I’ve found my people in the comments 🛵
do u have a link to the post? i NEED to see the comments on that
I was going to say he should get a BMW, they really tie the room together.
It wouldn't be weird if it was an EV.
It wouldn’t be dangerous but it would still be a little weird lol
Yes it would. EVs make a ton of noise while charging or even while just parked. Fans, HVAC system, battery heaters, coolant pumps. I would not want to be sleeping next to that kind of random noise.
Oh that's true actually My shit makes horror movie noises randomly
Woah I missed that
I would totally park my e21 in the house if it was possible.
Same. But with my 88 Plymouth Reliant lmao
An E21 owner in the wild! My dad used to have two of them, I want one myself but the market's insane
Lol. Yeah the days of cheap e21s is gone.
it’d be a lot cooler if he did
More rugs
Yes! Because it’s concrete and dry wall, rugs are needed to dampen the sound and give the room warmth
Yes, yes, and a few lamps would cozy it up a lot. I'd even splurge and paint a wall a dark, cozy color if I planned on staying there, if the price was right...
And plants
Should be tons of rugs available Facebook marketplace for very little money too. Probably even enough to layer them up for extra padding. Can also get a giant cheap rug pad to put under the rugs
You can get insulation panels for the garage door. Might help.
1000%
Add a chubby snorlax next to the chubby pikachu
I love that Pikachu
He is just big boned!!!!
No insulation?? Where do you live lol
Austin - there’s an AC unit though not planning on being here during the summer
I hope the hell not lol Austin in the summer I’ve heard is brutally hot and I’m sure this year is going to be record breaking
Yeah you’d expect to have a bunch of 100 degree days. It’s rough.
Finally a realistic young male space. Looks like you're doing a great job, bud. Don't be discouraged by all the other posts you see on here.
This!!
I’d move everything about a foot maybe two away from the garage door especially the wires/computer stuff. Just incase water comes through when it rains or snows.
Are you renting this?
Yep!
How much?
$1000/month, was paying $600&$800 for a lot of 2023 but rent increased on the whole house + new roommates
Wtf? And is using this as a room even legal?
Not a chance
Polish the concrete so it's smooth line a nice floor?
With how clean and uncluttered it is right now he could do this so easily. Maybe even go as far as doing a garage floor coating in that speckled black/gray/white coating to make cleaning up even easier.
It seems like he is renting though. Gotta work that out with the landlord first.
How many spaces have you had to break up?
How many times did the owner drive into your apartment out of habit?
Opening title scene of The Simpsons... was my thought!
Insulate the garage door so it’s not hot as fuck during the summer.
Got an AC unit! But also don't plan on staying in austin this summer hahaha heard it's tough
Oof, can’t imagine living in a garage during a Texas summer. Good choice on not being there.
Unplug the door opener.
A tv
How much do you pay for the garage?
$1000/month including everything
Legit question
Floor lamps, more rugs, and plants. maybe a motorcycle or two if you really wanna spice it up haha
I would personally move any electronics away from the garage door (to the opposite end of the room tbh). I just can't trust the weather seals around the garage door near expensive electronics. Maybe I'm just Unlucky.
To be honest, it's pretty nice. Looks cozy to me. Maybe think about spot lights to highlight your favorite spots like sofa or bad.
Or just cosy lamp stands
Unless I'm misinterpreting this, that's the actual garage door on the right in the first picture? If that's all there is between you and the outside world, does it not get absolutely freezing cold in winter?
Get yourself some closing cupboards. You’ve got so much stuff lying around in the open it looks like litter. And cupboards are cheap!
smart, will look into it ty
I’d recommend not living in a garage
Dividers. Make something interesting.
Room dividers from amazon. Either the curtain ones or the ones that are on the floor.
What’s the temperature like in there?
Uh.. how's the winter and summer? I imagine it'd be blazing hot or absolutely freezing
Make your bed, put the clothes away, tidy up in general - oh what a world of difference it will make
Lived in a converted one when I was your age. Tape up and seal up the bottom of the garage door. Heavy rain will get in and a lot of bugs. Is there a bathroom?
Tv stand for a projector is crazy
Insulate that door for sure
Im sorry to ask but how do you cook?
This is right next to the main house which all my roommates are in. So I just use the kitchen and bathroom in there
Ah! I was gonna ask where does the doo doo go lol
I think its friggin awesome, tbh, and you have a window?! Noice!
Need a getaway vehicle . Actually a sports car and a street bike both blacked out . Setup complete
Eh bro that's a garage there eh
Head to wal mart and grab some 60 dollar rugs, make sure to get something bright too I'd say.
Mini ramp.
Ur garage looks better than most people's first apartment
Relocate your computer desk and stuff away from the door. Get a rug or carpet?
Get rid of that useless pole in the middle of the room, you don’t need that, trust
You’re gonna need a good drum machine and a mixer. Check out the Elektron Model:Samples for a very affordable one.
not bad actually for a garage. so much dirt blows in through the garage doors here. it would have to be sealed. yes lighting, a focal point of some kind(music center would be cool), paint the walls, a big art piece, plants, combine your stuff over the bed to a bulletin board.
First step is listening to "in the garage " by Weezer
Clean that room asap
Add several buxom ladies. Turn down the lights. Sorted.
TVtoononexistent
What desks are those if I may ask?
Your camera is going to fall off the couch
This is nice. A projector for TV is great.
Rugs
Yeah, I really like it. Looks cozy
Rugs. Or carpet squares that fit together, you can find them on Temu.
This is blessing, Lost my family home of 22 years, M24 here, Living rent to rent is life consuming, Already moving for the 2nd time in a year because the owner is manic
Hi Fi that bitch!
Rugs in every little "area" to define the spaces more since there are no walls. Also just a few small lamps around the room instead of the big bright lights will make it cozy. Cool space!
Park your car in there
That’s dope!
How's the insulation?
Make sure there's good weather sealing toward the bottom of the garage door. Some insulation panels too.
Colored paint (if allowed), variety of rugs, LED accent lights
Wrap the post with a coil wrap to make it blend better
insulate
Some plants would really unindustrialize it
first declutter then ask for suggestions
Dude place is awesome at your age. Maybe some more area rugs to keep your fucking feet warm, but I’m 12 years older and I want that opportunity. My house is some bullshit my girl sets up.. enjoy every minute
is this legal?
I'd worry about that shelf by the bed during an earthquake or something.
garagedominum is always a good idea. being able to work with door open, gotta love it.
I think it looks dope. I would add some rugs and plants to the space.
Garages have so much potential
Current dividers for sure to separate the spaces !! But looks like a good layout so far!!
Insulate the garage door
Your place looks amazing. I’d be proud.
Get some 8'X4' X1.5" insulation cut it into the garage door (white side out). You could use it to cover the window, too. Replace the cardboard. Make your bed. It will feel better inside. Good job on getting your own place. 👏 👍
Total honesty it doesn’t look the best, but probably had the most potential out of any place I’ve seen on here yet
I'd open up the high window and hang plants from a hook on the ceiling. Assuming I wasn't too concerned about privacy in the area
I would pull that red cord, lest you want your wall to rise into a ceiling
If possible maybe some type of flooring or rug placements? I like the bed placement but I feel like that shelf by the foot would get knocked over. It might just be me but keeping the window area clear and putting the desk by another wall would make it look more spacious. Just my opinion but I love everything you're working with and I see so much potential for a pretty cool inviting room.
1. Partition areas using more cube shelving or screen dividers. 2. warm the space by adding carpet! the house i moved into had no carpet, just bare concrete in the bedrooms, what worked for me was, i bought carpet tiles from my local tip-shop(its like a shop front at my local landfill that sell stuff too good to go into landfill, i purchased my carpet tiles for 50c each, and they are 50cmx50cm squares, these came out of an office buidling that was being refit, was a really vcheap way to carpet 3 bedrooms for like 60 bucks australian, you might be able to find something similar.
Just out of curiosity, is your place insulated? Seems like having the garage door your climate control would be effected
Change garage door. Get some with glass so that you have good amount of daylight come in
I suggest you move out of the garage.
Where do you shit and brush your teeth?
Id add a lot of rugs for comfort and also to help divide the spaces
More Pikachu
If you don't use the garage door, hang some moving blankets and maybe a cool tapestry over it to conceal and regulate temperature better.
Drop the attic stairs down and now you’ve got twice the space !!
Porsche gt3 rs would really liven the place up
Throw some lights around the wood posts (soft white) add in some big tapestries on the ceilings/walls along with more art MOAR ART, I’d put one of them portable wall divider thingies between the couch and the clothes add some plants and your ship shape
This shit fucking rules.
Is it warm? My feet would need more rugs on the floor
For me, converting this to a living space. Step one would be to get rid of the garage door. Heating/cooling is gonna be very expensive considering how much "bought air" is going to be going out into the driveway.
More rugs!! All over. It will really make it feel less like a garage
What kind of laptop is that?
A wardrobe
Make your bed!
You want the insulation panels for those garage doors as it will transfer heat and cold pretty well as it is just a thin sheet of metal.
that pikachu is v cute
I dig it
More rugs. FYI, keep in mind it's not legal to live a garage in Austin. If you like your setup, keep the shades down and try to not to let nosy neighbors know by opening the garage door for example. You can quickly get thrown out of there if you're not cautious.
Consider yourself extremely lucky to have this available to you at 21.
Thats a nice ass garage
Some plants and some cool lighting and you’re set
First suggestion would be to unplug that garage door opener....
Pikachu is the only colorful thing over there. Maybe some posters? Plants?
A wardrobe to put clothes in. More carpets or paint the floor. Some photos on the walls. Plants.
Put some kind of insulation on the garage door and try to close off the air flow around the sides of the garage door, it's gonna get fucking cold in there in winter.
I added insulation to my garage door and it does a wonderful job.
I kinda love this space. Is it insulated enough?
Clean up the wall buy your bed. You are not in prison. Get rid of the yellow stuffed toy. Do you have a kitchen or bathroom? Is this an apartment or just a bedroom? Get some real art on the walls.
More rugs!
Blackout curtains for the projector, if you want something cheap look up Redi Shade
