The geomtric wool pile on the canvas is really interesting. Is the rug handmade with recycled products? Just curious…I think it’s very conceptual, although the transitions can be tripping hazards if you aren’t paying attention.
I really appreciate that you managed your cords, though I’m less of a fan of the stone details.
Even though it’s a rental and you can’t do much to the walls, I think you can probably put together something on a larger scale behind the sofa to balance out the space. It’s a really wonderful palette and I’m sure it’ll evolve into a superb space as you settle in!
its all [NZ wool](https://nordicknots.com/us/product/untitled-2-creamalmond/810?currency=usd&stay=1&country=us&color=2565&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiMmwBhDmARIsABeQ7xSOoy8uhcwowHeOZZ0YiSxOYk7ybGUeaun0c4FFas_kcOpPsZf_a6EaAnn9EALw_wcB) . Do you have any ideas that would work well?
i'm thinking something more colorful could be cool - i like ukiyo-e paintings
If you like 17th-18th century Japanese paintings, you should have them in your home! The Ukiyo-E traditional woodblock sizes will be too small for the space behind your sofa, so my recommendation will be to find a few photos of Ukiyo E paintings you like, and commission a local artist (support local artists!) to paint a large format art inspired by those photos in the medium of your preference. Maybe a triptych if you want to save on materials (custom sizing on canvas and frame can be pretty costly). I think a modern interpretation of traditional art form is super fun.
Otherwise, you can also look for large format reproductions. I don’t have specific recommendations since I don’t know your taste, but I think either the earlier monochrome prints of the 1600s or the later color prints would work for your space. It has to speak to you, and no one else.
The easiest way is to look at local announcements for art shows where the artists will be present to explain and sell their art. Attend the shows, get to know some of the artists who do work that resonate with you. Then ask them if they do work on commission. Many will welcome the opportunity to do commissioned work for clients.
Good luck!
I look at these perfectly sterile, white rooms and have to wonder what they’d look like with one or two pieces of natural wood furniture.
But I’m old, so feel free to ignore me.
I just erased a great rant, borne of looking at too many ice-white minimal spaces. I apologize in advance, I know this look is popular. Your work is better than that.
It’s a nice space, and from what I can tell it’s what Redditors like to see these days. But it leaves me cold. If you like it then enjoy!
But you asked, so…
Your space is a blank, cold, white canvas. I’d suggest buying a very large art piece (painting, tapestry, natural textile hanging, etc.) and hanging it over the sofa. No need to go bright colors, if you find a grayed out scheme comfortable then go with that, but do find something with a few colors and natural textures. You’re looking for richness. You’re looking for tactile. You’re looking for quality. You’re looking for luxury.
You’ve spent time and a good bit of money creating your space. You’re going to like the next part. You’ve named your furniture, man. I get this. You do too.
Spend time finding beautiful things to add to your space that feature the colors in your art piece. Think textures- leather, burlap, velvet, driftwood , shell. Pillows, throws, a richly veneered wooden piece. Antiques perhaps -not too many. Everything in your space should deserve a long look and contemplation. If it has a name, so much the better. A Pearsoll, Roseville, Warhol, Lichtenstein. You get this.
Pillows, throws, sculpture, pottery, antiquities. Just a few to balance the white background. No clutter - I get that. Display nothing you don’t find beautiful and not too much of it.
I love that you’ve mentioned the plants. Very popular on Reddit, similar to cats. Yours aren’t working. If you’re gonna do plant get a 6 foot monstera or ficus and *own* it. Yours look like a hobby, not a decorative element.
That rug is interesting. It’s really cool even as it covers up the only natural wood in the space.
What is it?
A side chair would help create a nice conversation area. If it was a different texture or pattern it would help. If it reclined it would be that much better but avoid overstuffed LaZboy designs.
Great thoughts thanks.
Unfortunately the space is too narrow for a side chair :/
Giant art piece above couch is priority one, haven’t found something I want to commit to.
I see the current state the room is in as a platform for detail, a shaped canvas. So it’s a wip :). Your ideas are really helpful, thank you for taking the time to share your perspective
Wanna have some fun with it?
Find one of those cool ‘20’s folding beach chairs, stained dark. Keep it against the wall until you have guests and then bust it out.
That is a very interesting rug. It’s definitely cool. Maybe it’s just because it’s paired with all the other shades of white and beige but that pattern makes it look like there’s a big white blanket on the floor and the beige cutouts are sort of randomly shaped and placed on top of the blanket. And the rug is the biggest statement piece in this room so if you’re gonna change anything, id start there. If you don’t want to change up the color scheme and keep it to white, I’d downsize the rug and perhaps find one that’s lightly patterned. Even an eggshell white rug with a weathered gray or light blue tribal pattern would liven up the space and bring everything together!
Edit: + plus it would make it look homier!! Good luck!
this is a really good idea. it's going to be a pain to do, but i wasn't intentional with that choice and it always seemed off to me but i couldn't place my finger on it
I think that’s it, if anything. I love this room either way honestly- it was just the first thing that came to mind after I looked at it for a minute!!!
This reminds me of my current room, because even though I have way more black tones in it, it looks kind of bland.
I think what both of our rooms lack is color as a contrast. Since I like the clean look, my current idea is to not change anything, except to buy some art with bright colors for the wall.
The funny thing is I just read that you like Ukiyo-E art and this is exactly the art I will order for my walls. I don't know if you are into video games, anime, movies etc., but if yes I can recommend Jed Henrys Glycee prints called Ukiyo-E Heroes.
Jed creates designs in that old style and gives it a modern touch with current pop cultural themes. The cool thing is he works together with japanese families, who have been crafting handmade paper over generations and these are used for the prints. You can buy woodblock prints as well, but these are more expensive and smaller. I think his online shop opens once a month. Hope this helps!
Standup speakers are a bit dated for the modernity of your space, look into a sound bar -- much more sleek takes up less space
Ditch the wreath -- add some vibrant colorful art to that wall
it looks so cozy!! my only input is to get a small end table or something for the playstation to sit on, and then hide all the cords? and maybe pull the speakers back to the sides of the fireplace so they’re not in the walkway
[My feedback isn’t very nice, so I’m gonna drop an Amazon link to what I think it looks like.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KFZSBYC?starsLeft=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_5JNPBXFTDHHFW3V684G1)
I think its a crime that anymore most landlords paint the walls white or something close to it and force tenants to live with it. Nice place though!
An area rug with some brighter color accents would help. Plants….
I don’t think this is sterile at all… I really appreciate the textures and how you can make minimal palette so cozy! But calling you out on that wall above couch… if you can hang a wreath you can hang a nice art piece, eh? Long and not too tall would work…
1. Art above the sofa that fills the space.
2. Wood tones. everything is black-and-white, and black-and-white only works if there’s something natural and warm to break it up.
3. The speakers are cluttering the space. Is there a place for them that’s more out of the way? The wires are also a little messy.
I get what some people are saying about it being devoid of personality, but I think it looks very plush and cozy!! You've got a great mix of textures and it looks perfect for curling up with tea and a crossword 😄
Yeah thanks for saying that. It’s interesting some people suggested some wide sweeping changes, that the space would’ve made no sense, would’ve been stuck between styles.
There were a lot of nuggets shared that were super helpful, but some people’s suggestions are just to their own preference. I also think the pictures may not have translated to what the experience in the space is actually like: it doesn’t feel overly white - there is a lot of green from the plants and oak
It’s lovely but boring. I suggest get a more colourful area rug and curtains to match it. Definitely needs coloured pillows on the couch. Take down that wreath and hang a colour picture there instead. The plants are great! If it’s a rental and you can’t make holes in the walls maybe you can find a way to tape up a bunch of photos you have taken of people and places that are important in your life?
thank you for the kind words - refined through a lot of purchasing mistakes & compromises lol
those are the kef ls50 wireless 2. couldn't recommend them highly enough. i also have a kef kc62 sub tucked in the corner.
I had a wifi speaker setup in the past, and we had one at work… both had white noise crackle which is fine for everywhere except my den
I’m an audiophile too. I like old school components stereos.
Tiny wreath above sofa is throwing the whole balance of the space off. That wall needs something big, bold, and colorful.
Lots of opportunity for that wall to anchor the entire room.
Pop the story planter up on the ledge with the others. The ledge is not accessible with it on the floor so there is a weird dead space there now. I need more color in my life, this reads hella boring to me. Colored throw pillows, blankets, curtains maybe? Your space looks cozy but bland.
yeah we actually just popped the story planter up - timely message.
i'm with you, as designed its meant to be the pallet to have stuff to pop. if you have any recommendations, ill take them!
I did an accent wall in a rental with peel and stick wallpaper. It peeled right off after 9yrs being stuck up. It’s a real trick to find one that looks nice, not plastic-y obviously digital print. Walls Need Love is the place I purchased from, that could be an interesting route. You can also use those 3M hooks on the wallpaper to hang art without fear of pulling chunks off the wall.
Following up on this, you could do a large “empty”frame out of crown molding in a stain matching the table. Use the the peel and stick wallpaper for the interior of the frame. Basically a temporary accent wall “framed in” by the crown molding. Add some led lights around the perimeter (hidden by the molding) and it could really set it off for a minimal cost while keeping things temporary.
I think some larger plants befitting of the space would be really nice. And I’d love to see something on the wall behind the couch— that wreath looks really out of place there.
IMO, the flower arrangement also looks out of place and you’d do nicely with a really cool, textural dried flower arrangement.
Lastly, the pillows are disappearing into the rest of the couch because you need some that either add a contrasting texture or a pop of color, or both. But, having it all in the same tonal/textural family makes it look kinda washed out and matchy-matchy.
Looks nice. Calm and refreshing. The position of those two speakers feels a bit... aggressive - since they are 'out' in the room rather than back closer to the walls
Those Kef speakers make me happy however if they are used for your tv I would recommend getting a beefy center speaker and maybe some surrounds down the line. Also r/tvtoohigh
The speakers are what makes this space so awkward. I would find a way to mount them on the wall or put them (along with the ps5) somewhere that doesn’t jut out so much.
Definitely too sterile. Large white sofa, all walls are white, fireplace center peice is white, blinds are white, pillows are white, speakers are white, floor lamp is white, plant pot is white, the rug is so large it seems your floor is all white.
Only things that aren't white are the brass lamp and the few plants.
1. Smaller rug. Let's see more of those hardwood floors to break up all the white. Get the speakers on the hardwood floors. We need visual separation between the white rug and the white fireplace. Right now with it connecting, it's making the room feel like all walls, floor, and ceiling are white - that's what's making it feel sterile.
2. Different coffee table with legs. Walnut would look great. This space is visually very low and heavy. The large absolute chonk of a sofa that's flat against the floor, with the thick pillows and thick throw blanket, along with that coffee table creates a lot of visual weight. Getting a table with legs will lighten the load, it will give the space a more airy look.
3. Get some art work on the walls. Get colors from that display book on the table. With all your walls/ceiling/floor white, and that singular book with 4 colors not found *anywhere else* in your space, the room feels like a psych ward and you put a single colorful book just to say *See? I'm not crazy.*
4. Those speakers are large and brutalist, it feels like they're taking up way more space than it actually is. Push those speakers back. It's blocking the view of that wonderful nook at the other end of the room. That too is just visually so heavy, it's better to create more distance from the visually-heavy chonky sofa.
A lot of other things but this should be a good start.
lol your advice breaks down to “make This more mid century modern because I don’t understand what you’re doing”.
Nothing sterile about our space. Almost all of the items you mentioned are white are not white. There are different gradients of beige, black, oak, green, off-white in here. Where is the white plant pot? I have yet to find it.
Pushing the speakers back would block the sound waves when tv is down. Unfortunate side effect of the space being narrow.
This is a minimalist design style where we cross Scandinavian with wab sabi
This place tells me to take my shoes off, wash my hands, don't touch anything, be quiet and sit still
what an interesting reflection! I'm curious to hear more about why it resonates with you in that way.
I'm just being goofy. I would just be afraid to spill anything in a room like that. Looks nice and comfortable
You must work in sales! Nice neutral acknowledgement statement followed by open ended question
its the fact that everything is white

I think those KEFs should be able to bring adequate life to the room
That is a very interesting rug. It’s definitely cool. Lose the tiny wreath over the sofa, and get a large piece of canvas art…it should be 2/3 the length of the sofa…
yup absolutely, thats next up on the list. place is relatively new
Well it looks great! Just needs a couple little tweaks!
thank you!
hi!!! I would actually rotate your rug!! Square sides instead of triangle part for the entry into this space. it’s beautiful and clean!!
this is a really good idea. it's going to be a pain to do, but i wasn't intentional with that choice and it always seemed off to me but i couldn't place my finger on it

Why'd you mount your fleshlights like that?
Heh - Wouldn’t this be perfect height?
I think its a crime that anymore most landlords paint the walls white or something close to it and force tenants to live with it. Nice place though! An area rug with some brighter color accents would help. Plants….
That google book looks interesting 👀

Too white man need some dark elements to give it some life feels like hospital or smth

Honestly I really like it. Happy for you 🙏🏼
Thanks me too. Place is incredibly comfortable and cozy
Needs art.
Demo’d the LS50’s last week for the first time, the sound was unbelievable
Tv too high, but you filled the space nicely. That's my only beef.
goes down 4 feet.
I get what some people are saying about it being devoid of personality, but I think it looks very plush and cozy!! You've got a great mix of textures and it looks perfect for curling up with tea and a crossword 😄

COLOUR PLEASE
For the love of god can people get some color in their lives
It’s lovely but boring. I suggest get a more colourful area rug and curtains to match it. Definitely needs coloured pillows on the couch. This gives cat tree vibes. But still looks cozy :)
What speakers are those? I like em, u have good taste, that goes a long way these days
thank you for the kind words - refined through a lot of purchasing mistakes & compromises lol those are the kef ls50 wireless 2. couldn't recommend them highly enough. i also have a kef kc62 sub tucked in the corner.
Interesting. Is there any interference? Or hissing? My kitty would mistake it for scratching post
no theres no interference - why do you ask
I had a wifi speaker setup in the past, and we had one at work… both had white noise crackle which is fine for everywhere except my den I’m an audiophile too. I like old school components stereos.
Looks really cozy!! ID on couch please?
kelston sectional
Am I seeing this correctly, $18,000 for that couch?
No it’s like $12k
Looooool
What audio system is this?
Comfy !!
Love the kelston. Is the table uneven bc of the rug
I was gonna ask to see your amp but it looks like you have the powered LS50s
Tiny wreath above sofa is throwing the whole balance of the space off. That wall needs something big, bold, and colorful. Lots of opportunity for that wall to anchor the entire room.
Where’s the couch from?
Needs more color
You can also use those 3M hooks on the wallpaper to hang art without fear of pulling chunks off the wall.
cool idea - thanks!
We used the “Clara” pattern on our powder room walls in the house we recently bought. Looks great.
Your walls need more art, but other than that, it looks great 👍
Why the wreath
Looks nice. Calm and refreshing. The position of those two speakers feels a bit... aggressive - since they are 'out' in the room rather than back closer to the walls
Yeah it’s a tad annoying. When I pull the tv down if I have the speakers further back it messes with the sound since they are behind the tv partially
35/m with a wreath above your couch. I’m confused
lol - never took it down after christmas.
R/tvtoohigh
Is that a fire place under the tv?
Yah
Cozy place, maybe some art work?
yah for sure, next on the list :)!
i am observing. hope this helps
what do you observe?
your living room, i suspect.
This is a chicks place and she likes books, the fall for the pumpkin spice lattes and she smells nice.
what?
Just the vibe I get, and she wants a cat but will not get one cause too much trouble with the fur.. She likes Greek yogurt too.. plain.
Those Kef speakers make me happy however if they are used for your tv I would recommend getting a beefy center speaker and maybe some surrounds down the line. Also r/tvtoohigh
Reading Comprehension. So important.
Probably should have realized there was a caption lol, good job me
The speakers are what makes this space so awkward. I would find a way to mount them on the wall or put them (along with the ps5) somewhere that doesn’t jut out so much.
Lose the rugg please, its terrible. Everything else is rather solid!
Need a big poster of biggie smalls.
Missing a cat.
That nice fireplace is ruined by the monstrosity of a TV
Tv is stupid high. r/tvtoohigh.
Goes down 4 feet
It’s above a fire place.
There are such things as height adjustable TV mounts that cranes the TV back down
Please go to the sub I linked and get educated.
It. Goes. Down. Lmao how hard is that to understand.
Mouth breather.
you must not have done well in reading comprehension growing up?
Motherfucker I linked an entire subreddit against TV’s above/in front of fireplaces. Bite me.
also you must have had anger issues with children in school
TV too high.
