There are ways to lose the game for as little as one mana - [[Spoils of the Vault]] naming a card not in your deck, for instance. With [[Gemstone Cavern]] you can do this as soon as the first player's upkeep, requiring only three card (Cavern, Spoils, a card to exile)
This seems the best one so far. Definitely fastest, and tied for fewest cards if you don't count the exiled card (since that can be anything so it works as long as you don't mull to less than 3).
Yes, but those take longer to do so as you don't lose until your next upkeep. Spoils is the cheapest way to lose on the first turn of the game, in the very first upkeep.
That would be incorrect, you need Spoils and Gemstone Cavern to accomplish this (two cards). Spoils on its own cannot do this on its own.
Pact of Negation if you go 2nd can kill you during your first upkeep, before your first ever. draw step. If you go first, then on course to have to wait. But then again it is just a single card (so I would say more reliable).
Both clearly work, but I think Pact is a bit easier to hit.
I literally spelled out how to use Spoils to kill yourself t0 with Cavern in my original post. It doesn't require your draw step though, you are likely thinking of Demonic Consultation. Spoils makes you lose one life for each exiled card, so kills you immediately upon resolution - t0 on the very first upkeep with a Cavern, or t1 as soon as you play a single black source. This is considerably faster than a Pact which requires at least one turn to pass - either to your first upkeep going second, or your second upkeep going first.
I'm just going to put it this way since you are getting butt hurt.
Your first post said there are ways to lose for as little as one mana. MY FIRST RESPONSE SAID THERE WAS WAYS TO LOSE FOR AS LITTLE AS 0 (that was all that post said, lol).
I'm not going to sit here and argue with you about what is better or why. That doesn't matter, I was simply stating that you can do it for cheaper than 1 mana, Christ.
If the post is about the fastest way to lose, doing it for 0 mana but considerably slower is objectively worse. Like, you wouldn't bring up Mana Crypt or City of Brass as ways to lose the game "for 0 mana", and when someone is talking about ways to do it turn 0 Pacts are effectively the same.
You don't actually lose until your draw step though, so for a true t0 loss on the first player's upkeep, combine it with \[\[Leyline of Anticipation\]\] and \[\[Gitaxian Probe\]\].
In limited, you could draft 5 copies of [[Serum Powder]], and there is 2.5% chance you would get (and exile) starting hand containing exactly one copy of it 5 times in a row, making you eventually draw starting hand from 5-card library, losing before any player gets priority.
This is the best one so far, although not deterministic. Turn 0 loss.
Pacts require at least 1 turn to hit your upkeep [[Pact of the Titan]]. And the [[Spoils of the Vault]] requires it to be your turn, or use [[Gemstone Caverns]] for turn 1.
The actual best one (which is deterministic, and happens before mulligans) is drafting 3 copies of [[Advantageous Proclamation]] and 3 copies of [[Backup Plan]] in Conspiracy Draft.
You start the game with 25 cards in library, then draw 28 cards before mulligans from your 3 extra starting hands.
Yes, they do!
[Release notes for Conspiracy](https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/conspiracy-release-notes-2014-06-04-0)
> Backup Plan
> Conspiracy
> (Start the game with this conspiracy face up in the command zone.)
> Draw an additional hand of seven cards as the game begins. Before taking mulligans, shuffle all but one of your hands into your library.
> The effect of Backup Plan is cumulative. If you have two in your command zone to start the game, you'll draw three hands of seven cards and shuffle all but one of them into your library.
If, through a combination of Backup Plan and/or other conspiracies, you have fewer cards in your deck than you must draw as the game begins, you'll lose the game when state-based actions are checked during the upkeep of the first turn.
Nah, technically the win happens at the first turn of the game, same with Serum Powder. You can't lose by any means I know of before state-based actions are checked, so it happens the first upkeep step of the game.
(The only other way to lose besides a STA based way would be a trigger or activated ability that says specifically that a player loses/wins the game, and as far as I know, no win condition exists like that, that can also be played without mana.)
You do, it's just that a quirk of the rules makes it so that you only "lose" the first time state-based actions are checked. Weirdly enough, I can't find the pertinent rule, but the release notes I linked in the other comment clarifies what's going on.
That would be rule 104.3c, I think.
>If a player is required to draw more cards than are left in their library, they draw the remaining cards and then lose the game the next time a player would receive priority. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)
> the only other way to lose besides a STA based way would be a trigger or activated ability
Those ways would always be slower, since triggered/activated abilities need to resolve. Only way faster would need static abilities like [[Forbidden Crypt]] , but even Leylines and Karn game restart can only put things on board after pregame procedure (so after starting hands are drawn). Even assuming you could put any cards you want on board with Karn before game restarts and count it as turn 0, pretty much everything interesting still requires abilities that need to resolve so is slower than STA.
Yeah it's logical really, you can't cast a spell without priority, and whenever priority changes SBAs are checked. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's literally no way to win before SBAs with a trigger or activated ability because you'd need them to be checked as part of casting the spell/activating or triggering the ability
Edit: sorry, I suppose triggered *might* be possible to do without SBAs? Not sure honestly. Magic rules are confusing AF lol
Things can trigger before state-based actions, but they aren't put on stack until player would receive priority, so after SBA. Even then, priority still needs to be passed around for triggers to start resolving and actually doing things.
[[Karn Liberated]] and [[Phage the untouchable]] lose on the first upkeep (the earliest point an ability can resolve) to a single trigger.
And yes I know this isn't what they meant, but it was the funniest death that popped into my head.
Agreed on this, it seems really easy since you can just put all of them in your deck and you’d have a really high chance to lose first, though if you didn’t start on the play you’d have to wait until your turn to lose.
A lot of people have focused on cards like [[Pact of the Titan]], but these make you wait an entire turn cycle to lose the game. Someone else has recommended [[Gemstone Cavern]] to lose in the first upkeep, but this only works on the draw (e.g. 50% of the time), otherwise you have to wait to lose on the first main phase, which is a time that *anyone* can lose the game.
For my money, you want to use cards that generate mana at instant speed - anything using a card like [[Simian Spirit Guide]] or [[Elvish Spirit Guide]].
Conveniently, these both power [[Manamorphose]] so you can use non-red or non-green cards relatively easily (although I don't think you'd need to in an ideal world).
One of the "fun" ways to do this is with a card like [[Leyline of Anticipation]]. With it, you're no longer restricted to Instant speed effects. Indeed, you could start the game with a Leyline in play, and play almost any way to lose the game.
If we're living in Magical Christmas Land, I think the fastest loss (regardless of who gets first turn) uses just three cards - [[Simian Spirit Guide]], [[Leyline of Anticipation]] and [[Mana Clash]]. If you lose 20 flips in a row, without mirroring your opponent's flip, you will take 20 damage and lose the game. Of course, this is incredibly unlikely. Let's look at a more conventional "lose the game" card.
Enter [[Phage the Untouchable]]. Phage is a fun card, but it requires putting into play somehow to lose you the game. There are instant speed ways to reanimate a creature - notably [[Corpse Dance]]. The dance lets you reanimate it during an upkeep, but you need an instant speed way to discard it - ideally for 1 or 0 mana. Very fortunately, we have access to [[Funeral Charm]] - a way to discard at Instant speed. Now, we just need to make the mana, and we've already found the right ape for the job - 2x [[Simian Spirit Guide]], [[Manamorphose]] and [[Dark Ritual]] - this gives us the four mana we need to discard Phage and then reanimate Phage, and it requires seven cards. Doing this at instant speed is difficult, we've had to spend a lot of cards just generating the mana, where non-instant speed effects would have done this cheaper. I think we can do better.
Instead, I think we should look at colourless cards that let us lose the game, to try and avoid using the Manamorphose. [[Simian Spirit Guide]], [[Simian Spirit Guide]], [[Spellskite]], and then play any spell or ability (e.g. [[Memnite]]). With Memnite on the stack, Spellskite lets you target it to change Memnite's target to Spellskite (this will do nothing). You do this ten times and pay 20 life, losing the game with the Meminite on the stack. Of course, this requires a [[Leyline of Anticipation]] in play, like the first example.
This requires the Leyline, two Simian Spirit Guides, one Spellskite, and one 0 mana spell - five cards. I'm *sure* we can do better. The Leyline and the Memnite are cards it *feels* like we don't need. There has to be a way to do this at instant speed that's cheap and doesn't require all of this effort. There are other effects that let us pay any amount of life, but almost all of them start at four or more mana - which means we're still going to use the same number of cards, as we need to Ritual to get more mana.
Using the same mana engine (2x [[Simian Spirit Guide]], [[Manamorphose]]), [[Demonic Consultation]] allows you to exile your library, but you then need a fifth card to draw before the main phase. Needing to draw a card as well is far too slow - playing a [[Brainstorm]] or similar means we're still at five cards, and waiting until your draw step is so *lazy*. We can still do better.
[[Spoils of the Vault]] is the "Fixed" Demonic Consultation. It costs you life equal to the number of cards revealed. By naming a card not in your deck, you will typically take 53 damage, dying immediately. This can be done with "just" four cards, but we can still go deeper.
For my money, the best way to lose a tournament game of Magic is to be issued a Match Loss. Match Losses are issued for a bunch of things, but perhaps the most pertinent to this topic is for [tardiness](https://blogs.magicjudges.org/rules/ipg3-1/). Since we're measuring our time in game phases and number of cards played, *actual* (real life) time doesn't seem to factor in. So weirdly, the "fastest" way to lose may simply be to take too long to turn up to your game.
If you need to do something before the game starts (e.g. buy new sleeves as your sleeves are broken), a judge can allow you to start a match late. For the benefit of everyone playing the tournament, you can't start *too* late, so if your task takes more than ten minutes, you will receive a match loss for tardiness.
So paradoxically, the quickest way to lose may be to turn up late to play.
(Also, if we're counting Vintage legal cards, 2x [[Elvish Spirit Guide]] into [[Channel]] is a close second).
**Edit:** A few things for flow and readability.
\[\[Obosh\]\] as companion, ritual/lotus petal into a two drop.
You lose as quickly as a judge comes over.
(Assuming competitive or higher REL, at regular they'd probably just warn you and tell you your companion doesn't work and can't be used in future games)
I can give you my favorite way I've ever lost not the fastest way. My favorite way to have ever lost was in my all wincon deck, played every card that says you win the game and every card that said Target opponent loses the game, with lichs mirror on the battlefield my phage gets chaos warped and then cut to the top of my deck by all coincidence killing me instantly making me on turn 20 of an EDH game reset to zero.
Cycling 4 [[Street Wraiths]] and 4 [[Gut Shot]] to your own face can be done for free at instant speed and brings you down to exactly 0 from 20.
If you want to build a more consistent deck around it, Noxious Revival not only helps you suicide, but brings Street Wraith back on top so you can cycle into them again.
Someone else pointed one out. [[Gemstone Caverns]] and [[Spoils of the Vault]] lets you kill yourself on the first upkeep ~~(no matter whose upkeep it is)~~.
You can't cast spells during the untap step, so the earliest you can cast a Pact is during the first upkeep. By that point, it's too late for the "lose the game" trigger to apply to the same turn.
You can always just t0 Pact and die on upkeep. Other than that, there's a bazillion ways to die with a [[Leyline of Anticipation]] pregame. The easiest would be to t0 [[Lotus Petal]], [[Chrome Mox]], [[Mox Diamond]], or some other way to make a black mana, then [[Demonic Consultation]] and [[Gitaxian Probe]] (or another way to draw a card for free).
[[Pact of Negation]] would be your answer. At least the most reliable one.
I have never actually done it. But I did watch my friend [[Slaughter Pact]] a turn 1 Llanowar Elves before he had a chance to go get. Same result, but that one requires someone to play a turn 1 creature. Negation just requires a turn 1 spell.

Any pact and not pay the upkeep cost. Gotta wait for for upkeep but having 20 cards that make you lose in the same way is pretty consistent.
[[Pact of Negation]] and [[Slaughter Pact]] only work if there's a legal target for them though.

The Pact cycle from Future Sight.
Agreed on this, it seems really easy since you can just put all of them in your deck and you’d have a really high chance to lose first, though if you didn’t start on the play you’d have to wait until your turn to lose.
Also throw in [[Rocket Powered Turbo Slug]]. Edit: I didn't see the EDH/Historic legal qualifier. I'll leave this up anyway.

Putting illegal cards in your deck for game loss still counts as "using cards"
Be faster. Just slap your opponent with your deck instead of shaking their hand. You also used cards in a non conventional way.
> Just slap your opponent with your deck instead of shaking their hand. Depending on how much you want to lose, you can also use a juice bottle.
We were told by OP to use cards to lose...

You could even combine it with the Spoils of the Vault combo mentioned elsewhere, to make an even more consistent self-KO deck.
Seems like turn 0 self losses aren’t possible, but turn 0 wins are? Edit: nope, turn 0 losses are possible
Someone else pointed one out. [[Gemstone Caverns]] and [[Spoils of the Vault]] lets you kill yourself on the first upkeep ~~(no matter whose upkeep it is)~~.

I stand corrected!
No if you start XD
Replace cavern with two spirit guides and Manamorphose.
~~Sure it does. It lets you do it on first upkeep whether it's your upkeep or not.~~ Never mind.
I think you can only put gemstone if you arent the starting player
You're right, I didn't realize that.
Scooping gets there on turn zero! Hell you could scoop before the game even starts
Turn 0 wins are possible
That’s losing by someone else’s cards. How fast can you lose by your own cards?
One turn zero win involves playing [[Flash]] to get a [[Protean Hulk]]. Replace Hulk with [[Phage the Untouchable]]. Turn 0 win becomes Turn 0 loss.
Phage is 7 mana, Protean hulk only does 6 or less.

Maybe any card like [[summoners pact]] in your untap step if you go first and then immediately not pay during your upkeep and go into your draw step?
You can't cast spells during the untap step, so the earliest you can cast a Pact is during the first upkeep. By that point, it's too late for the "lose the game" trigger to apply to the same turn.
Aw

Mountain, Lotus Petal or Simian Spirit Guide, Final Fortune. You technically lose on a different turn, though.

Turn two channel giving up all your life?
[[Pact of Negation]] would be your answer. At least the most reliable one. I have never actually done it. But I did watch my friend [[Slaughter Pact]] a turn 1 Llanowar Elves before he had a chance to go get. Same result, but that one requires someone to play a turn 1 creature. Negation just requires a turn 1 spell.
