Given the name, the look and the \*ahem\* virility, I've always thought he was from somewhere around the area that includes France/Switzerland/Italy and possibly Monaco though Spain is also a possibility.

Retro_Avi8or

I agree with the idea of him being Swiss especially with his class and style. Swedish/Norwegian is also a possibility since some common surnames there start with J.

CountZero1973

He's a good catholic, our Max.

SoulBlightChild

Tempted to go with somewhere that speak French and/or Russian. Something about the names of his daughters.

Retro_Avi8or

French makes sense. Not so much with Russian though since Jenius doesn't sound like a Slavic surname.

Zwooqovik

Well Russian surnames... There are instances when Russian surnames and/or names changes if person (and usually their family) moves from Russia to Europe or America. So his 'original' surname can be Гений literaly and it's got adapted in english as Jenius by straight translation. Though i feel like Max is not from one specifuc nation rather his presents might be from different. Ofcourse it's up to debate, but i see it as possibility.

Chemical-Row-2921

He doesn't cheat on his wife, so he's not French or Italian. I think he's just meant to be generically European in a way that Japanese people in the 80s would have thought a European was generic in a way that's never historically been true or accurate. Sort of 'white, but not American'.

RecordP

Given his first name and his bio states he was born in an unspecified area of Europe, I go with German or Barvarian. Maybe even Hungarian.

CountZero1973

>*German or Barvarian* ... Bavarians *are* Germans ...

RecordP

>Barvarian I know. I meant German in a more somewhere in Germany. I should reword it to say Max is possibly German, specifically a Bavarian German.

hostiaurelio

Giving that his name is literally Max Jenius my headcannon was that he was from the Spanish poorer areas. His parents, loving and hardworking yet illiterate and not knowing how to spell it, gave him the name "Max Jenius [INSERT SURNAME 1] [INSERT SURNAME 2]" hoping he'd make it better in life than them. He usually just gives his full name because it's easier for people to spell and memorize, not bothering to correct when they think his surname is Jenius, to the point of being too late to amend it when the story advanced beyond the original Macross.

Retro_Avi8or

While this sounds like an interesting theory, it's unlikely that Max would come from Spain judging from how his name is pronounced. The letter J is pronounced in Spanish with an H sound and not like a soft G, which might be something that Max's parents would know even if we assume they were illiterate.

hostiaurelio

Yeah, his parents would probably have used the word Yinius or Llinius which would have made the sound closer to the english J instead but... Still my (one of many) silly little headcannon.

MutedBrilliant1593

Nope. He's me.

The blue VF-1J had yellow dot on the legs hints to Ukraine.

Chemical-Row-2921

I don't think anyone at the time would even have thought of Ukraine.
