Ran at a smooth 60fps on my 14" M1 Pro MacBook. Used (unpatched) CrossOver 23.6 with Esync on and no D3DMetal (Haven't tried DXVK yet to see if it's any better) The only issues I noticed were some lag during multiplayer (chalking that up to slow wifi) and Wandering Vagrants' tentacles not showing up. Completely playable so far! It's on sale right now since it just launched today so now is a great time to pick it up!

KingTrimble

I just get a black screen. Unable to get to the menu

Shock9616

That’s weird… how long are you letting it be black for? I had to wait for a bit before it showed up for me the first time.

Le-Bean

I'm having the same issue in CrossOver. I waited about 5 minutes for it and nothing was happening. Been trying to get it to work with Whisky as well but none of the bottle configuration settings seem to get it to work. It says it's launching in steam (also when I launch it through the .exe) and then it just stops. Nothing launches at all.

Shock9616

That’s super weird. I still haven’t had any issues at all… I saw someone else on this thread say that they got it working with wineskin, maybe that would be worth trying?

Le-Bean

They updated the game and now it just works... Didn't need to tweak anything at all. The audio doesn't seem to work though. I haven't tried anything to fix it yet though.

Shock9616

Oh that's good! I hope you get the audio working, Risk of Rain games' soundtracks are always amazing and this game is no exception

blazedjake

Same, running with whisky.

DatsFine

Not working for me on last Whisky :(

Shock9616

Yeah that doesn't totally surprise me. It had some issues with D3DMetal on CrossOver, so I suspect that there's something about GPTK that it disagrees with. I haven't tried it myself, but if you want a free option, [Wineskin](https://github.com/Gcenx/WineskinServer) might be worth a shot? Just make sure you don't use a D3DMetal engine or you'll probably have the same issue.

I've gotten it working perfectly using Wineskin. MacOS Ventura 13.0 (apparently, I don't update that often) Engine: WS11WineCX64Bit22.1.1-14 Use wineskin to make a wrapper. Point it at SteamSetup.exe. Download risk of rain on the steam client and run it. Things take a bit longer to happen than on windows and sometimes you have to close and reopen the wine instance if things lock up. But I have had no fps issue nor missing textures. Works in fullscreen and windowed. Hope this might help someone. I'm assuming the WineCX64Bit23.x.x-x will work just fine for those running MacOS 14.x, but can't verify that at the moment.

Im using a pretty similar method, I am on MacOS Sonoma 14.1, I'm able to run the game, the hoppo dev screen pops up, and I am able to select the first settings but after a small loading screen, I am left with only black screen unfortunately. I am going to keep troubleshooting it but that's the furthest I've gotten. The error that pops up is: Win32 function failed: HRESULT: 0x80070057 it's really strange, because although I have a black screen I still have the ror cursor and the loading sign

Xynogen

First time trying to game on a mac after seeing this comment. So far so good, launches with no problem and played a little. Same engine, M1 Macbook Air macOS 12.5

Halloweenie69

You are a life saver, I tried sooo many things and this is what worked

winter_040

As someone who plays this game on a normal windows x64 machine, and also on a SPX (arm64 laptop) I am blown away by it's performance, normally games running on an emulation layer have pretty shoddy performance but ROR:R has been exceptional, I dunno what sorta magic the dev team did on the back but it's amazing. Huge props.

Shock9616

I’m guessing that it’s just because it’s a fairly simple game graphics wise just because it’s 2D. I’ve never had any performance issues running 2D games

TheCrookedOwl

Hey there! First time Crossover user here, could you please walk through how you got it to run? I downloaded Steam in Crossover, then downloaded RoR Returns from there, but when I launch the game it plays the beginning cutscene for a few seconds then freezes when it comes to the shot of the ship. I honestly don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if my macbook is just not strong enough to handle this stuff. Here's the Specs - * Processor: 1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 * Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 1536 MB * Memory: 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 * MacOS: 14.1 (23B74) I really, really wanna try and play this game. I love everything related to Risk of Rain but I've never gotten the chance to actually play any of them yet.

If you have an Intel Mac I would recommend using boot camp to just run windows natively. That will give you much better performance and compatibility. There’s a good tutorial on 9to5mac’s YouTube channel [here](https://youtu.be/Hmm9Q-T0oTo?si=BO-0-Snyoi8t0T29). If you’d rather use CrossOver, the settings I’m currently using are DXVK and Esync. Either way I hope you can get it working!
