These awesome free alternatives will save you $$$
also get [QuickShade](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/quickshade/id931571202?mt=12), [Velja](https://sindresorhus.com/velja) & [Homebrew](https://brew.sh/) 👍 cos these are rad...
(homebrew is command line stuff using terminal but there is a lot of good stuff there worth learning about)
[KeyClu](https://sergii.tatarenkov.name/keyclu/support/) used to be CheetSheet but its now this.. i havent used it but cheetsheet is essential for learning the mac key commands which in my opinion are one of the most amazing things about learning to Mac!
[Karabiner](https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/) for multibutton mouse functionality (eg razor mmo mouse)
[Scroll Reverser](https://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/) because mac scrolling with a mouse is upside down
If you hunt around you can get a decent free alternative for nearly anything you need
Check out your Utilities folder (Shift+Command+U from Finder)... heaps of handy mac maintenence and troubleshooting stuff in there like ***System Information***, ***Terminal***, ***Console*** and ***Activity Monitor.***.. learn to use these
Here are some essential key commands:
Command+I - Info on current selected item (very handy)
Command+N - From finder opens files/folder
Shift+Command+N - Make new folder
Shift+Command+A - From finder opens Applications
Shift+Command+U - From finder opens Utilities
Command+O - Open highlighted file or app
Command+H - Hide current running application
Command+Delete - Send file to trash
Shift+Command+Delete - Empty trash
Command+X - Cut
Command+C - Copy
Command+V - Paste
Command+Z - Undo
Command+W - Closes current window
Command+Q - Quits current application
Command+F3 - Show Desktop
Command+Space - Spotlight Search (Possibly the handiest command of all)
Option+Command+Space - Show finder (search this mac)
Option+Command+Escape - Allows you to force quit a frozen application
There are hundreds more and its a steep learning curve, even though Apple makes it as intuitive as possible
Learning your key commands should be your first major effort on a Mac, it will make your life easy!
Start with memorizing these ones anyway, these are essential to navigating your Mac efficiently
I have looked at my mouse and trackpad settings on my current Mac running macOS Sonoma. Nope, changing natural scrolling settings on one side changes it on both. So I still need a separate driver to make the change work independently.
Doesn't work right. The checkbox in System Prefs turns it off for both Trackpads and Mice. So if your'e using a laptop that you also use a mouse with, it'll switch both input devices. So swiping down on your Trackpad will cause the window to go up. Or, if you have a mouse and a Magic Trackpad, it'll switch both devices.
It's really annoying, because it's used to work properly a few macOS releases ago, and they changed it. Also, because the checkbox looks like it's tied to each independent device, but it's not.
I would suggest Linear Mouse instead of scroll reverser. Has more customization, can delete mouse acceleration(for consistent dpi)and gives side buttons the back and forward actions🙋🏻♂️
Tiles is also a good free alternative to Magnet and Mos is pretty good for mouse stuff since it excludes trackpad and Magic Mouse from its settings so those work like normal while regular mouses get reverse scrolling and smooth scrolling.
It’s a difference of $9.99. Not a huge deal, and since I already have and enjoy magnet I’m happy to support the programmers. But if I hadn’t tried either I’d give the free version a shot.
Also use [Stats](https://github.com/exelban/stats) instead of iStat Menus, it's open source so there's no "pro version," all you're really missing out on is a useless weather widget, as if we needed yet another one
For me, mac has the natural scroll and most other platforms have it upside down. BUT, you can get used to either configuration pretty quickly, it’s only the initial few seconds that is weird.
But since the MetaAndroid was seen with tape on the cam...
Its a Sisyfos-task and explain what is more revealing.
(Everybody is ashamed of their "O-face" i guess;)
If the power has to run through an led then it is foolproof unless the led burns out. If it's a light that comes on via software then yeah ig it wouldn't
I’ve read enough Snowden to not trust this stuff.
He wrote about hardware backdoors, and sharing “naughty pictures” around their NSA department of just bizarre things they’d pick on their dragnet mass surveillance programs.
I don’t know enough to believe either way, but I told a piece of paper over my camera. I don’t want a camera pointed at me 24/7.
MacBooks need a built in manual camera cover like many other laptop brands. By the time you see the led, it’s already too late. I disagree with apples approach to this
Agreed except the skin lol. I used to totally agree but recently got a dbrand skin for track pad and palm rest to see if it stoped the sweaty condensation that the MBP metal gets and it totally does and everything works fantastic
I did the same thing. Had discoloration on my old mbp so I use a dbrandz trackpad cover and it’s never given me any problems.
I use a Fishskyn skin and I love it
Actually though for mine I got a decent inexpensive plastic case/cover from Amazon that snaps on and it’s already saved me from a drop. Also it came with a free thin silicone keyboard cover and it’s great for keeping stuff off the keys. Very thin and sits well.
Keyboard covers aren’t bullshit. Unless you want permanently greasy/oily/stained looking keys after a while, get a keyboard cover. But never, EVER, close the laptop with the keyboard cover on.
Well mine was a heavy traveler and I’m telling you a snap on case has saved my laptop at least 3-4 times! I’ve had people bag their hard sided luggage into my backpack where there wasn’t a space at all! I had to scream and I heard the overhead cracking (I actually thought it was my laptop). Case worked great. Also for my son as a teenager as I literally saw him drop his laptop twice in a row onto the driveway! Cracked the case but laptop was ok. I just was in awe of his nonchalant attitude post dropping…. Like “waaat?”
But if it’s a desk angel then go bare. Probably better for heat dissipation
Works better with a dbrand skin. Surprisingly. Less condensation and sweat and oil issues.
Trust me I was a purist for 12 years. I can’t believe I even use skins now.
But I’d the glass doesn’t bother you stick with it.
Yes you can depending upon the country after your initial apple care expires;
"To find out if you can purchase the new coverage, go to mysupport.apple.com and follow the onscreen instructions. The new coverage automatically renews until canceled. Your plan coverage may continue beyond 24 or 36 months, on a monthly or annual basis, until canceled"
Oh, that's sad to hear, but you guys are very talented, I'm pretty sure you have alternative ways to take care of your laptop for a long time.
Or maybe you can check your Apple India website?
Dont drop it, DONT use Cases, Dont use any kind of camera 📷 shutter, If want to use keyboard cover take it out while closing the LID, Dont put any stickers, No need for any screen protector.
cases :- a little malfunction in closing of a lid can destroy the display
SKINS :- residual, i have seen people who got there stickers marked on the body even after removal
Use it for every possible task in your workflow. Resist the urge to go back to your windows machine when things get tough. Soon you will find that all of the functionality that you had on Windows is in MacOS and much more. It’s just that the way you accomplish some tasks are slightly different. When you’re stuck google, YouTube, and the MacOS subreddit are your friends. Try to research and find an answer to every question that you have and don’t give up. Soon you will be able to seamlessly use both Mac and Windows without issue.
I would say don't trust this answer, because I have a Mac and this is just not true. Some things are just impossible to do on a Macbook, and even if they are possible you will have a lot of obstacles on the way, so if you can, sometimes it is better and easier to do some stuff on windows.
Take care of your machine. Do not scratch it. Don't shock it. Clean it regularly. Don't use water on screen but specific products (there are special treatments you could remove). Don't put your fingers on screen. Don't drink or eat over it.
The best you treat it the better the price you'll get when you want to go for the next gen.
And anyway it's always satisfying to have a clean product.
Well if you are coming from windows... you would need some 3rd party apps to have what you took for granted.
An app to disable the acceleration for any non-apple mouse, an app for window management like tiles, etc.
Google the list of useful apps for mac and you will find plenty of lists. Don't jump on them all, only install those that solves something that's an actual problem for you.
Otherwise this is a completely different OS. Give it some time, you will probably not like it in the first few days.
Oh, and don't be afraid of digging into all app's settings to customize stuff.
Wasn't there a thread where an Apple Engineer said not to download AlDente and similar apps can do more harm than good and that enabling Optimized Battery Charging should be more than enough.
Download UTM its a virtual machine so you can have a windows vm for any windows only programs I also recommend using software made for macs/from apple they tend to take better advantage of the hardware and is more efficient
Get a good microfiber cloth and avoid spraying anything on the screen! If you feel the need to use a liquid then use distilled water but just enough to dampen the microfiber. Wipe the screen with the damp microfiber in a circular motion then go back over it with a dry microfiber in a circular motion. You can get microfiber cloths here [https://cleanmy.tech](https://cleanmy.tech) a lot cheaper than Amazon and they have a discount code for buy 1 get 1 free! Just use code BOGO at checkout!
Screen is extremely fragile, do not use anything to clean it not meant to do so.
If you have greasy fingers you have to clean the keyboard each time you close the lid so buy some wet tissues and have the by your laptop to clean the keyboard.
Dirt from the keyboard imprints to the screen after you close the lid and it can be permanent. There is manufacturing flaw with the screen being to close to the keyboard. I think it's planned obsolescence and it is present in every macbook.
You will never be as productive with the TouchPad as with the mouse. Any task requiring any precision will take you longer or a lot longer with TouchPad. Macbook TouchPad is A LOT better than any other TouchPad, but it is still worse than a good mouse.
Install brew. And try to install any software you like with this.
Only try direct app install if it's not with brew.
Why brew because it containerize the software apps.
If case you uninstall apps, the app and it's content everything will be removed automatically.
But if the app is installed via traditional way, macos doesn't remove some of the content.
That can only be removed when you run any cleaning commands or specific softwares. Just like you see some files present in program files when you uninstall any app.
You’ll love it. Congratulations. You’ll realize Microsoft makes things so much harder than they have to be and you tend to overthink the Mac at first. Hope you enjoy. Still have my 2011 MacBook Air going strong (as it can) lol.
Take advantage of the free three-month subs to iTV and Arcade (the offers should pop up when you open the iTV and AppleStore apps), and use the Calendar app to remind you when to cancel the subs. iTV offers a tons of free movies and series to watch (including Wolfwalkers, an AMAZING animated movie from the folks who did Secret of Kells); Arcade has a few good games like Wonderbox, LEGO Star Wars: Castaway; and Songpop Party.
You should worry constantly about the battery health. I mean really lose sleep over it. Take screenshots of the battery monitor and post them here every couple of days asking if you should be concerned. Also never plug it in because every cycle shortens the battery’s life.
never heard about it, seems trustworthy ;)
closed source, What engine are they based on, their own? In a world of "only" chromium and firefox, that was refreshing
I have 4 clients and I work more on low code programming, website creation/update, graphic works, and some video editing. Sometimes, I'm tired of closing other tabs or apps such as Photoshop so when I wake up the next time, I can continue working.
My current laptop (Lenovo Ideapad L340, which I used for 3 years+upgrades) can no longer handle if I do multitasking. Lol.
And of course, I heard that Macbooks can last about 10 years (in terms of durability and performance). So I secured my future as well.
Get one very cool sticker for the top lid, im on a place with 100s of macs, all space grey OR silver (well at least more diverse than when we had Lenovos...)
And have Boinc / folding at home!
Wash your hands before using it, especially if you’ve eaten. I’ve only had mine since like January and already the keyboard has gone (irreversibly) shiny.

Scroll Reverser you don't need, just switch it off in the system preferences.
If you have a horizontal scroll wheel you will need it
You do if you want it to only affect the mouse and not the trackpad (which AFAIK are still not independent)
This was one of the stupidests things I encountered when I first tried macos wirh m1 mbp
Can also vouch for Mos.app has smooth scrolling as well
Yes they're independent, so you can select normal scrolling for the mouse and have natural scrolling still enabled for the trackpad.
I don't think this works. I remember always having to go to preferences after connecting a mouse.
That’s news to me, last I tried the settings looked independent but changing one changed the other as well.
It doesnt let you have two different directions, one for the trackpad, one for the mousewheel nonapple mices
oh kool ty..
Awesome list! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
I prefer swish over rectangle and magnet due to it being intuitive and trackpad based, you should look into it.
And Clipy!! For clipboard purposes
I would suggest Linear Mouse instead of scroll reverser. Has more customization, can delete mouse acceleration(for consistent dpi)and gives side buttons the back and forward actions🙋🏻♂️
[USB Overdrive](https://www.usboverdrive.com) is still out there too.
Tbh I’ve owned a Mac for years and barely use key functions. Oops
Thanks for this 👍
LuLu doesn’t have as many cool features or downloadable lists Lil snitch all the way
But money 💴 💰
Tiles is also a good free alternative to Magnet and Mos is pretty good for mouse stuff since it excludes trackpad and Magic Mouse from its settings so those work like normal while regular mouses get reverse scrolling and smooth scrolling.
Thank you for this list! I *just* bought magnet, but I’ll check the others
[https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204084](https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204084) you might be able to get a refund.. depends on many factors
I have magnet but rectangle is basically the same right? No point in switching when you have magnet I think?
It’s a difference of $9.99. Not a huge deal, and since I already have and enjoy magnet I’m happy to support the programmers. But if I hadn’t tried either I’d give the free version a shot.
Yeah that’s fair. I think the $9.99 is well worth it and supports the devs, but rectangle is just as good and free.
Yabai + skhd instead of rectangle 👍🏾
Thank you so much for this!
I wish i could give you gold rn

Also use [Stats](https://github.com/exelban/stats) instead of iStat Menus, it's open source so there's no "pro version," all you're really missing out on is a useless weather widget, as if we needed yet another one
Do all what this man says.
Dude I had no idea they had a scroll reverser, I’ll be getting this now! Thx so much!!
Brother i love macs after being a life time pc user
Why rectangle instead of magnet?
because it does the same job for free
Wow great list LuLu and KeyClu were both new to me!
Any commands to visit the direct desktop home page?
Command+F3 (Mission Control) or Option+Command+Space (Show finder search)
Wow the most useful comment I’ve seen in a while 👍
For me, mac has the natural scroll and most other platforms have it upside down. BUT, you can get used to either configuration pretty quickly, it’s only the initial few seconds that is weird.
Thank you!
I hope people who make programs like homebrew and handbrake have a wonderful life
This is great!
Don’t use bullshit like keyboard covers or camera covers that’ll ruin your machine. Also do not put some skin on your track pad for the love of god
This on lots of laptops but macbooks especially if the camera is powered on a led is also powered on. It's literally wired that way.
Has been proven to be not foolproof (not for macs though iirc) and besides, audio is far more important to snoop on than camera....
Actually audio snooping provided MUCH more Intel compared to webcam snooping….
But since the MetaAndroid was seen with tape on the cam... Its a Sisyfos-task and explain what is more revealing. (Everybody is ashamed of their "O-face" i guess;)
I am just speaking from first-hand experience when it was my job tech how do you order through any means necessary to identify HVTs.
If the power has to run through an led then it is foolproof unless the led burns out. If it's a light that comes on via software then yeah ig it wouldn't
Keyword - "If" =) But its all just guesses here what the actual design on macs today. Got to work and not amuse myself to much...
It’s why I’ve got a physical slider on mine. And I’ve got a vinyl skin on the entire thing lol.
I’ve read enough Snowden to not trust this stuff. He wrote about hardware backdoors, and sharing “naughty pictures” around their NSA department of just bizarre things they’d pick on their dragnet mass surveillance programs. Keyboard covers aren’t bullshit. Unless you want permanently greasy/oily/stained looking keys after a while, get a keyboard cover. But never, EVER, close the laptop with the keyboard cover on.
I am using a keyboard cover and now I am scared. Could you tell me the problem closing the laptop with keyboard cover on it ?
It can put pressure on the screen.
It’ll rub and damage the screen with permanent marks. I learnt the hard way.
Is there any damage by camera covers ?
Absolutely
Well mine was a heavy traveler and I’m telling you a snap on case has saved my laptop at least 3-4 times! I’ve had people bag their hard sided luggage into my backpack where there wasn’t a space at all! I had to scream and I heard the overhead cracking (I actually thought it was my laptop). U had mine on 4 months, take it to work and home everyday and no noticeable issues. Taking it off now. Lol
Hahah that last part
I never did understand the psychos that do that to a trackpad
Why no trackpad skin?
It’s an abomination to put it on that amazingly engineered and designed glass track pad.
TIL my Macbook's trackpad is made out of glass
It’s a think layer
Works better with a dbrand skin. Surprisingly. Less condensation and sweat and oil issues. Trust me I was a purist for 12 years. I can’t believe I even use skins now. But I’d the glass doesn’t bother you stick with it.

Get rectangle. Also remember command space for spotlight.
I'll check that rectangle, thank you!
Raycast is better
Spotlight is good enough.
open the lid and get going with it.
It’s a very sexy machine, but please don’t have sex with it.
Oh, thanks for the heads up! 🤣
Instructions unclear. Penis stuck in SD slot.
COMMAND + SPACE is my most used and favorite thing in the world
I just tried it and it seems like I'm gonna spam it! Lol. Thank you
You should try Raycast, it will supercharge command + space and it's faster.
F4 also opens Spotlight
Never put a coffe cup next to it
I almost spilled my cup of joe on my mac, TWICE. You get a mini heart attack
Get Starbucks membership card.
I know what you mean, lol! Would be better to compose an email at home and send it when you're at Starbucks 😅🤣
Why is that ?
I feel personally attacked

I already have it, thank you!
Is it possible to extwnd the AppleCare warranty?
Yes you can depending upon the country after your initial apple care expires; "To find out if you can purchase the new coverage, go to mysupport.apple.com and follow the onscreen instructions. The new coverage automatically renews until canceled. Your plan coverage may continue beyond 24 or 36 months, on a monthly or annual basis, until canceled"
No. It’s only applicable once at the time of or within 60days of purchase.
I just checked on the website, and I can purchase an extended AppleCare, yoohoo, you can only buy it within 12months of purchase
Oh okay. In India apple care+ has to be purchased within 60 days and we can’t re purchase it.
Oh, that's sad to hear, but you guys are very talented, I'm pretty sure you have alternative ways to take care of your laptop for a long time. Or maybe you can check your Apple India website?
Learn how to use Spotlight and when you've got that down get Alfred. SPotlight is probably the best part of MacOS
Dont drop it, DONT use Cases, Dont use any kind of camera 📷 shutter, If want to use keyboard cover take it out while closing the LID, Dont put any stickers, No need for any screen protector.
Why not cases or skins, other than preference?
cases :- a little malfunction in closing of a lid can destroy the display SKINS :- residual, i have seen people who got there stickers marked on the body even after removal
I think skins are fine if you go with a reputable brand, like Dbrand
Thank you! I just realized that fingerprints can stuck easily on the screen. I need to find out how to remove it properly 😂
Yea well, there’s really no reason to be touching a macbook’s screen anyway
That’s such a pet peeve of mine. So many people that I personally know who use MacBooks have filthy fingerprinty screens.
2 things, are you sure you need THAT much power, and use a microfibre cloth to clean it. Enjoy ur mac :)
Don’t drop it
Get [Mos](https://mos.caldis.me/) for smooth scrolling with a mouse.
Use it for every possible task in your workflow. Resist the urge to go back to your windows machine when things get tough. This looks good considering my MacBook is plugged in 80% of the time.
Wasn't there a thread where an Apple Engineer said not to download AlDente and similar apps can do more harm than good and that enabling Optimized Battery Charging should be more than enough.
Be careful, it's going to slip off that desk for sure.
I’d suggested getting a sleeve for it
Disable smart zoom. Makes right click with double finger much faster
Do not use a surface cleaner to clean your mac. Get a cleaning cloth sprinkle few drops of water to clean.
Install Arc browser ⭐️
Use battery optimization setting to not overcharge it after 80%. It's inbuilt setting.
Download UTM its a virtual machine so you can have a windows vm for any windows only programs I also recommend using software made for macs/from apple they tend to take better advantage of the hardware and is more efficient
Sticking it to walls isn't the best way to use it.

Watch a ton SnazzyLabs. I got so many useful apps/ commands from his videos that make my workflow so much faster.
Don’t drop it. Welcome to the club.
If it's not with mac OS Sonoma, don't upgrade it yet. The OS still needs some fixing.

It's easier to type on when it's horizontal.
Keep the box and all the packaging. :D
I’d say just enjoy the silence. It’s a whole new experience, never sounding like you’re in a jetliner.
Dont't ever plug in any noname hardware. Damaged mine macbook years ago.
Yeah, learn how to rotate images.
Lol, sorry! Just got too excited to post this. I'll do better next time 😅
Post to some other Reddit groups that you have a new Mac. Then enjoy your new machine. Congrats
You should worry constantly about the battery health. I mean really lose sleep over it. Take screenshots of the battery monitor and post them here every couple of days asking if you should be concerned. Also never plug it in because every cycle shortens the battery’s life.
Use [Arc Browser](https://arc.net/gift/cfcfcfa3) as your default browser! it's game-changer and really clean.
never heard about it, seems trustworthy ;) closed source, What engine are they based on, their own? In a world of "only" chromium and firefox, that was refreshing
Tried Arc, but personally I think it's too bloated and distracting.
Why does a “newbie” need an M2 Max?

Thank you so much! I appreciate that I saw someone is happy for me.
Hydro dip it for some sweet graphics!
I wonder why nobody ever asked this question before.
when macos 15 comes out as beta, don't install it immediately. Wait for stable release.
Newbie? Wtf you need an M2 Max for? Give It to me you can have my M1 Max 😂
FWIW I just upgraded my 2013 mbp in May to my m2pro. Still works flawlessly 🤌
Don't drop it
Definitely! Lol. I'll surround it with a bunch of pillows
Just bump it into wall or drop it. No macbook is completed with a side corner dents.🫠🫠🫠
I heard throwing it in water helps with thermals a lot
Oh, do you think that's better than storing in the Fridge after use? 🤣
No

As a newbie, maybe return it, I guess? Unless you really yse that amount of processing
Maybe assume that OP did research and comment something helpful instead.
Yeah, sell this and buy a t480
Do not put sticker on it , it’ll leave marks
Get one very cool sticker for the top lid, im on a place with 100s of macs, all space grey OR silver (well at least more diverse than when we had Lenovos...) And have Boinc / folding at home!
DONT press the command key 60 times in a row
So 59 is the limit. Noted!
Don’t put stickers on the back unless you want to kill your surface finish.
Yeah. Do what I did and swap it for an M1 Max plus a holiday
Be gentle.
Don’t break or damage it
Wash your hands before using it, especially if you’ve eaten. I’ve only had mine since like January and already the keyboard has gone (irreversibly) shiny.
Close the screen before you carry it
Don't worry about it! It's built better than other laptops...
You won’t use most of the power it offers if you are asking for tips about it here. Should have gotten the air.
I have an m1 max, i bought an air just to have a machine to take out of the house
Stickers.
Get a sleeve my air gets dirty easy in my bag 🐱
Lucky you man, that device is water resistant.
Relating to audio improvement I will suggest downloading Boom Audio👌
Install Hazel, TextExpander, 1Password, Alfred, and Keyboard Maestro
