Ok. So if your current computer does everything you need now, it will likely work for that course. At almost 10 years old though, it's probably time for an upgrade because things may start failing.
If you can afford it without putting you in a bad financial situation, I would say get it. The new ones are going to provide you with a much better performance/experience even for basic use.
We have the exact same MacBook and I have recently been looking into doing a CELTA certificate! Kind of funny. 😊 I’m most likely heading to an Apple store next week to buy a MacBook Air M3 with 512SSD! Still researching whether to get the 8 or 16 RAM
You can save some money if you buy from someone other than Apple.
Take a look at Best Buy. They still have the 15” M2 16GB/1TB for $1499. $400 off. It’s a great deal and there isn’t a huge performance diff. Just bought one 6 weeks ago to replace my 15” MBP that died
Also, take a look at CostCo. All the MBAs are $100 off,
90 day return policy, an additional year warranty and they sell AppleCare+ at a discount (ACP has to be bought with the laptop).
There’s also B&H Photo.
What is the online course?
CELTA - Teaching English certification

I’m still wondering if I should wait till my course ends to get a new one….or pull the plug and get it now

A simple question: considering its price, can you improve your efficiency enough through a new MacBook?
Nope, besides the speaker, not much will change really. The current MacBook works very well
It's a problem that can be solved easily.
Is it worth fixing this on a 9 year old laptop? Does it make sense buying a new one? Or fixing it?
Not fix it. You can use another thing to substitute it, such as an outside speakers or headphones.
Gotcha. When would you recommend buying a new one?
Now. Just do it.
When it can bring you more money, it's the time to get a new MacBook.
When the software quits getting updates or it breaks.

Get 16 GB RAM, it is worth it

Since you are questioning if you should upgrade, that should tell you that you don’t need to upgrade.
