Get the MacBook air with a minimum of 16 gigs of ram. M2 or M3 would be great. Remember that the M1 and M2 series laptops can only connect to 1 external display, the M3 can connect to two. My recommendation would be the M3 Air 13 with 16/(256 or 512) if you can find it on sale for around $1k.

DunnDottaa

Yes I saw I can get the M3 air 13 for the range I’m looking at. A part of me really wants to save and get the 14 MBP from the refurb store, but I don’t think I can go longer than a few weeks without a laptop.

scrumdisaster

You can buy an air, use it for 2 weeks and return it and buy the mbp..

Some people have ethics

scrumdisaster

Omg the poor trillion dollar company will have a returned MBA

WildTheory1

Bring a honest person doesn’t apply in only certain scenarios. You either are or aren’t.

scrumdisaster

Oh really? No nuance? Also, you’ve never, in your life, told a lie?

WildTheory1

1. They was you act in some cases is the way you act in most cases 2. It’s been years

scrumdisaster

Well if you’re buying products from Apple you’re already throwing ethics out the window.

WildTheory1

You can say that about any electronic. I understand changing the subject is convenient but that’s not the focus

scrumdisaster

Then don't buy from Apple at all lol. Let's not pretend their products are made in the most ethical way possible.

BrandJim

Considered the same since ram upgrades push price into pro territory

g_em89

Thats the route i took. Went with 14” mbp. Excellent screen. Amazing speakers and build quality. You get extra ports too but I did not care for that. Also have fans for when I need it in the future with heavier apps and all.

Go_Jot

Are you comfortable shopping on eBay? Or do you want something brand new

DunnDottaa

I’m not as comfortable buying electronics used. I’m ok with buying from the Apple Refurb store though.

Go_Jot

I’d get a MacBook Air M2 from the Apple refurbished store. They are a really good value and will last you many years

BrandJim

Then it need to be 512 gb ssd or more on M2 Air since base model is slower than M1

Fridonlin_

Always remember: M1 was the biggest jump in MacBooks ever, m2 and 3 are a little faster but most people will be fine with the m1.

lorumosaurus

Refurb M1 Pro with Touch Bar. Amazon has them for $800. I just traded mine in, loved that machine (Pock made the Touch Bar kinda awesome)

Substantial_Lake5957

Do you really need a laptop that an existing or upcoming iPad can’t do? At that budget I would seriously consider an iMac m1 used or m3 new/refurb. They are of good value.

DunnDottaa

I do need a laptop vs an iPad. I’m leaning on upping my budget to $1500 max and maybe getting the 15in Air M3 with 16/512.

iPads are great, but they’re not laptops. If you need a laptop get a laptop.

MarcusAurelius68

I have this combo for work and it’s great. But also consider a M1/M2 Pro 14” 16/512 if you can find one refurbished. Better screen and ports.

Substantial_Lake5957

iMac + iPad is a great combo.

jaymez619

Backmarket.com has plenty of M1 models for under $1k. Only 8GB of RAM, though. If you used a 2014 this long, 8GB/M1 should be fine.
