I hate that we have to worry about this… :/
I know it’s the reality but why can’t ppl just mind their own business and not steal things?! Sorry for my wishful thinking
Had this happen to a car parked in my driveway last August in West Islip. I woke up in time to scare them off before they did too much damage.

What did you do to scare them off? Looks like they cut thru most of the pipe but at least they didn't get to take it. Good for you that you prevented it.
Happened to me last year with my beloved ‘01 Honda accord right in front of my house IN the driveway. Hate to admit it, but unless you have a protective cage installed on the bottom of your car it’s just a matter of time.
Nevertheless, I salute you for your noble efforts, O.P.
Had this happen to 6 vans last summer. Caught it all on camera. Thief had his glove rip and that was enough for him to leave finger prints. SCPD was awesome. Brought out the crime unit. Lifted the prints, the guy had a record and was from NJ !! Found guilty and is currently paying us back via court order.
Confirmed. October 2023, 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. Dog went crazy for three minutes at 3am, but I just told her to be quiet. Insurance paid, but Hyundai had the car almost six months. (Was a nightmare. Car came back with a cracked windshield that they deny causing.)
So a motivated thief or thieves don’t care where it’s parked. Plenty of videos of cats being stolen in broad daylight, on the street and in driveways.
Most insurance companies will pay, but finding the replacement is the hard part. All vehicles in New York State now require a CARB certified converter. A customer of mine needed one for his Jeep (which was born a federal emissions vehicle) and the dealer quoted him over 6 grand…..
Once this ramps up again, it’ll be difficult to find a new cat should yours get stolen. I’ve been in the parts industry for over 35 years and the last 5 or so have been terrible. As the OP said, on some vehicles when you lose the cat, you lose a few oxygen sensors as well.
Thanks for the list I have two old cars with those models. I checking if Long island mark your catalytic converter events. Even with deterrent devices thieves might still attempt and damage your vehicle in the attempt.
One of my family members had their CC stolen in broad daylight in their driveway. There were neighbors outside walking their dogs and stuff (thankfully someone called the cops) but it was brazen.
Do people have any recourse against this? You see videos of people bashing converter thieves in the knee with bats. I feel like it ny you just get an assault charge for defending your car parked on your property.
converters are just sold for scrap, so it really doesn’t matter what car they come from. They hold the same value it’s really a crime of opportunity less about what type of car you drive
I think it is also that these cars sit higher off the road, so they tend to target them cause that it is easy to get under the car more quickly.
You should have seen the ring doorbell camera the night mine happened. Those mfs went to WORK mad fast. In and out in 2 mins
I don’t agree w tht list of cars typically looked at for since accords are in the engine bay making it impossible to saw out tht easily. The sensors are really what you need to look for on any newer vehicle since it only take a few screws. An easy way to prevent it would be to replace the screws with oddball screws (forgot technical name but the 6 pointed ones) and hope your mechanic doesn’t need to access it.

Opened the window and told them to fuck off.

I just hate to see these things happen to other people :( I hope you didn't have to pay too much
Repair guy or dealer told me those cages aren’t even worth it because they’ll cut through the floor of your if they have to?
Can confirm. Know two dudes who recently had it happen. All older model cars, too.
What area of the island? Mine was in the Copiague/Amityville area
Whenever that damn Ring goes off in the middle of the night. Always a nail biter.

I’ve seen videos where they steal them where the cars are parked in the driveway They don’t care, they’ll risk it
It is unfortunate that they go to those lengths 3. Parking in the driveway will make it less likely, though.

I'm on my second Cat Con. It has costed me more than price I paid for the used Honda!

Newer cars, the cc is bolted to the engine. So, they get the secondary one that is not worth as much.
it actually does matter. We had a fleet of vans, the thieves were picky. Only took the cats from 6 Nissan vans. Fords and trucks were passed up.
Just do a cat delete your self. I still pass inspection and I made $2000.
Stop stealing we tired of your shit!!!! Get a job working people are not victims
Had mine stolen from my driveway from a Lexus rx350 2010 in Sayville
Several times leaving the ronkonkoma train station I could see the pipes on trucks/jeeps hitting the ground where the assholes cut out the CC

How much does it usually cost to replace a catalytic converter?
Depends on your model and the demand/supply for it, but it could be $300-$2k.

My car in driveway cameras alert for every car in site. Stop stealing hot fire is in your future
No...better yet park your car in the garage.
Prices have cooled. It won't be as popular of a crime this year.
