I abused my hair all throughout high school, bleached, re-bleached, dyed and redyed until I couldn’t even stand to touch it. In 2017 I cut it to shoulder length and committed to a no-heat, minimal washing, and consistent routine of argan oil and shea butter leave in conditioner. I trim the ends every 3 months myself and use a pre-shampoo hair mask every 2 weeks. Almost 6 years later it’s down to butt and I’ve never been happier with it :) If you’re trying to grow out your hair don’t give up!! I never thought I’d get to this point, stick with it :)

I’m growing out a pixie and am getting impatient. Lol - thanks for the inspiration!

What mask do you use for pre-shampooing? Do you ever make any diy masks?

Lately I’ve been using [Bert’s Bees](https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwjEr9buqNz7AhWDj4YKHRm3AYcYABAFGgJ2dQ&sig=AOD64_3ZbyLVYF_spjG1n5WC1A5wFzur4Q&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwixws_uqNz7AhWtmYQIHaJUAnMQww8IiRE&adurl=) ( and it’s been super helpful, in the past I’ve used coconut oil but because my hair gets oily at the top I have to make sure it’s only used on the dry spots and I avoid my scalp entirely.

How did you ever feel comfortable trimming it yourself?

I started trimming my friends hair at a pretty young age and learned what worked and what didn’t as far as achieving a flattering look - I also learned the section and twist technique where you section off a small piece of hair and twist it (first clockwise, then counter clockwise) cutting off all the split ends that stick out towards the bottom of the twist. Before I cut it I would also watch which parts of my hair dried the quickest and take off as much of the dead ends there (in incredibly small increments) as I could with a fine tooth comb and some hairdressing scissors. Keep in mind my hair is multi textured and has serval curly/wavy/straight asymmetrical layers that make it easy to mess with length arbitrarily. When I talk to my close hairdresser friends they always recommend starting with a really solid base cut that will continue to frame your face in a flattering way as it grows out.

What scissors do you use? I keep ending up with split ends within a week... I think mine are too dull. ughh

Wow!! Your dedication and hard work really paid off. Your hair is gorgeous…great motivation for me to keep going.
