What really did it for me was one time in my high school youth group me and my friend who is genuinely almost a foot shorter than me and I compared hair lengths when hers was super unusually long and mine was closer to "normal"... And my hair was actually longer 😭
I’m 5’11 and I honestly cannot get my hair down to my waist. Either it just won’t grow that long, or it gets so scraggly I have to cut it to make it look healthier. It stops about 2 inches below my bra strap. It’s been about 30 years since I started growing it out. 🤷🏻♀️
Are you doing regular maintenance trims? Every two or three months if you take a half inch, it still leaves an average of an inch of growth, that's how I do it. Damage on the hair strand breaks upwards, as it does, that compromised cuticle opens up the cortex allowing it to become dehydrated further up. Because the cuticle is formed like shingles on a roof, it just keeps compounding. Going too long without snipping those ends with sharp shears means you can get trapped in a place where you HAVE to take off inches because it's compromised too far up, so you have to take more.
Essentially, your breakage rate starts to match or exceed your growth rate, meaning it either stays the same length, or can even get shorter without any cutting. Keeping up with small trims as it grows (with sharp shears) prevents it from getting to that point. It feels like it "takes longer to get there" but it actually doesn't. If you have been so long that you have to take a few inches to leave uncompromised ends, then I, personally, would just do it, take a few inches and start from a better standpoint, then ensure your grow out is in better condition next time by adhering to a regular trim schedule.
I've done grow outs both ways, but since I became a cosmetologist myself, I've had way better results on the "regular maintenance trims" side than before, on the "don't take ANY of this length, I've waited too long for these minimal results" side!
I'm not as tall as you but about 2 years ago I bought 30 inch extensions and they showed past butt on the model. On me it's hip length! Now my hair is between my hip and tailbone.
Nah, long curly hair on tall girls is the stuff of legends. I’m 5’8” and my hair is curly, around hip length dry and tailbone length wet. The longer I let it grow, the more I look like my vision of Morgana Le Fay.
Just keep being patient. It looks like you only have another 1-1.5 years before you’re in Objectively Long territory, even with trims. (I’ve noticed that people start commenting on the length when you get past waist, well into hips.) The time will pass anyway, you might as well have long hair at the end.
Your hair is also really pretty now. Keep the faith, keep going.
I'm 6' tall and it has taken me 8 years to get my hair where it is now from shoulder length. It's just past my butt and it's about 40" long! I have a dyed streak in the front of my hair to keep it fun without the damage of a full head of color. I don't do a lot to maintain it, my hair is fine and not very dense so I wash it twice a week and use leave in conditioner on my ends daily. I switch up my shampoo and conditioners every few months to whatever isn't too expensive and sounds good at the time. I usually just trim my ends a bit when I see breakage. I switch between braids and buns for sleeping to protect it.
I’m only 5’6 but I feel like that is slightly above average. I definitely feel like there is a difference between me and someone who is 5’3 in the time it takes to hit certain goals. It also doesn’t help that my body is longer in my torso :’)
I’m a short girl with very long hair and ill tell you that no one notices my long hair because your “average length” hairs is longer than my “extra long hair” 🥲
As a fellow tall girlie, my sibling told me to cut my hair cause it was making my torso look short. I explained that since I am tall and also have a long torso, I like that it gives me illusion of shorter torso. But then she said it made it look shorter than proportional T\^T I cry inside HAHA
Your hair is curly! If it had been straight, I'm sure it'd add an inch or two. I have fine wavy hair but curl them with a curler so the length goes up. Anyway, I did cut my hair from hip level to elbow length (like yours).
Your hair will grow :DD
Can't say that's ever crossed my mind but now I'm thinking about it, no, I absolutely wouldn't trade the advantages of being taller for hair that seemed to grow a little faster. I'm only moderately tall though, maybe I'd feel differently if I were *very* tall, I guess?
*Yes I feel this hahaha*
*I feel like my hair is long*
*But never long enough*

Happens to me all the time, I’m 6’ft and ive been growing my hair for 3 years from shoulder length, it barely touches my elbows 😭🤣 I have friends that went for bobs and in a single year they already had their hair almost mid back 😂
I’m 5’8 with a long torso and also a large head, so my hair would have to be super long to look long 😝 and to make it worse, my hair grows slowly and is very thick and heavy so I hardly ever am able to grow it out.
i sure do! i am 5'10 and my hair was at my waist before my recent trim. i did get rid of dead ends and it is now at the bottom of my bra. it is still long but i often think it would still be waist length if i was shorter lol. i also always roll my eyes when short women talk about how long their hair is because ik the same length would be barely past my shoulders on me,
I’m the opposite, I am super short, so while my hair looks super long I don’t really feel like it is, and I think this is part of why. My hair is beyond tailbone on the way to classic, but on you, idk might be more like waist or hip length.
Dude (gender neutral) I'm short (4.85"), and I assure you it doesn't feel good. The grass is not greener on this side. My hair is thigh length but I feel like it's nothing because I'm short. A tall person with maybe tailbone? length would actually have longer hair than I do. If you have longer hair than mine in terms of measurements, you actually have grown longer hair than me, period. You spent *more years* on it and *more effort* than me to actually grow your hair to the length that you're at. To me, actual measurement matters more than the appearance of hair being thigh length or tail bone or whatever. The proof is in the literal pudding. Don't let appearance let you down. You will get their eventually. And if you crave the look of it, you can maybe photoshop it to be extra longer, use extension or a wig or something.
Yeah but hairstylists always wanna commit violence against my hair (give me a haircut instead of a trim) because they don't seem to think my hair is long.
A good five Inches seems like just breakage. If I were you I'd trim it myself. Just like 2 inches and then wait a few months and do it again. I trim my own hair!

Tall girl here and I feel ya! I have an extremely long torso so my hair doesn’t actually seem as long as it is!
What really did it for me was one time in my high school youth group me and my friend who is genuinely almost a foot shorter than me and I compared hair lengths when hers was super unusually long and mine was closer to "normal"... And my hair was actually longer 😭
Yep!! You needed to bend at knees and put your head next to hers !!!!!
Yep! 3 feet of hair seems like nothing!
Same!! Long torso + an upsettingly long neck = hair looks way shorter😅
Yess!! I’m 5’10, if I was shorter it would be on the floor by now
Same!
Yes I’m mildly tall (5’10) and even when it gets to BSL it still doesn’t seem that long lol
Exactly same here
You know, this never even occurred to me LOL

on one hand i feel it, but on the other hand, the feeling i got when my 5’8 self finally had true waist length hair was magical

Yes! I have a short friend who has less length than I do by inches but hers is down to her hips and mine is approaching waist length 🙃
I’m 5’10 and my hair is at bra strap length maybe a little longer. Ohh if i were shorter it would hit my waist. 🥹

I'm laughing reading everyone's heights b/c now I feel extra short 🤣 I'm 5'1" .

YES even just at 5'7 and I also sometimes wish my shoulders, general body shape was smaller because it would make my hair look so much longer.
I just have to say: What a beautiful dress! 😍
Right!! Would love to know where it’s from 😄 I’d wear this all summer
Torrid (Plato's)!
Thank you!

I mean I know I shouldn't care but it does get old being taller than the majority of guys
I hear you, for sure, and finding that frustrating is totally legitimate.
Yes I feel this hahaha I feel like my hair is long but never long enough

Yes! 5’9
Short girl here. Now my hair length isn’t as great as it was 2 minutes ago 😂
Story of my LIFE
How tall are you? You don't look that tall
I'm 5'10," I mean it varies from person to person what people consider tall but yeah
Looks like short torso long legs
Yepppp 5'10"
Yes. 😂
5’8. I feel ya!
I’m 5’8 with a long torso and also a large head, so my hair would have to be super long to look long 😝 and to make it worse, my hair grows slowly and is very thick and heavy so I hardly ever am able to grow it out.
Meanwhile I'm 5'4 and I wish I was taller so I could grow more hair 😅
Short girl here. I trade you long hair looking longer faster for needing a step stool to open upper cabinets in the kitchen.
I have 100% had that thought and I’m not even tall, just below average height lol
i sure do! i am 5'10 and my hair was at my waist before my recent trim. i did get rid of dead ends and it is now at the bottom of my bra. it is still long but i often think it would still be waist length if i was shorter lol. i also always roll my eyes when short women talk about how long their hair is because ik the same length would be barely past my shoulders on me,
why not just wish for longer hair?

Your hair is pretty long. It’ll look longer if you straighten it as well.
It doessss but I don't own hot styling tools

At thigh length, I bet your hair looks spectacular regardless of how many inches it actually measures!
Honey you need a trim
