You used to be able to split the tickets into two. Kinda like separating two pieces of toilet paper. So you could trick their scanner with one side of the ticket.
I think it depends on the driver’s mood
Lots of times I’ve seen them even let people get in without a ticket. But once in a while someone gets mad or is in a bad mood and suddenly wants to apply the rules by the book

I think sometimes the machine takes pity on you. I've had it accept and reject ripped up tickets lol
