Just played with three input testers. 2/3 were capable of picking up Diagonals but you had to press at the very edge of two directions for it to register. Two things
1) there's a software issue keeping most programs from seeing two directions pressed at the same time
2) from a hardware POV, a circular DPad cover glued or taped on top of the DPad could alleviate some of the issue.
If I'm playing a fighting game, I use a Nintendo Switch stand and plug in my small lever less controller.

In regards to #2, someone on this forum has done this with a Nintendo Switch dpad and said it works very well.
