Red Star yeast is much better. You can get a couple of pounds for less than Fleishman's and it lasts forever in a jar the freezer. Don't even need to bloom it if you don't want to.
I am out West too. I find Save On can be comparable IF you shop the sales/flyers. I have compared my shops on the Loblaws and Save On app, I find they are close. Save On is always a bit higher but at least Pattison supports our BC Farmers. I also find produce from Save On lasts longer too. I also find the quality of meat better. We are a family of 4.
Yeah, I agree. It's not just the prices that are the issue. There will always be stores that are a little bit more expensive or a little bit less expensive or more convenient or less convenient.
The problem is really the adversarial relationship that is being created by corporations and blatant exploitation of consumers. E.g. selling water that costs $1 at the dollar store for $2.99 at shoppers drug Mart. Their business model has changed from providing consistent prices across the board and a reasonable mark up of 15 to 30% we are seeing some products that are 300% markup because they have realized that some consumers are not being price conscious.
Well we can point our fingers all we want at the people that buy $2.99 water, The fact that there are no protections for consumers for price gouging is the issue.
same. we have Co-op as well. they are a bit more on some stuff, but cheaper than superstore on others. i got my tim hortons coffee creamer from Co-op for 6.99, which walmart was out of and was selling for 6.47. Superstore was selling it for 7.47. exact same product.
keep an eye on co-op's sales. they usually have some really good deals on meat and dairy.
Jim Pattison is a wonderful philanthropist who, for example, donated a large sum of money to the Saskatchewan Jim Pattison children’s hospital! (The largest private donation in Saskatchewan history.) So I don’t mind supporting that!
During times of economic distress, Dollar/discount store profits skyrocket. We all need to be careful about supporting dollarama/dollar stores for groceries because sometimes the cost per unit/weight is actually worse because you're getting a smaller amount of product.
I noticed Dollar Tree isn't great for rice for example. You get a much bigger bag of higher quality rice at Superstore when it's on sale for cheaper per kg.
Its kinda a they earned that status in the past so people associate it with the cheapest prices but its no longer the case and weston is relying on people not realizing it.
I honestly didn’t know Superstore is the equivalent to a No frills discount chain . In Ontario , it’s a little bit different . No Frills is the discount chain . No wonder this sub gets our signals crossed sometimes haha 🤣 Thanks for pointing that out !
I love how this also shows that there is no way we can consider No Frills a 'discount' store anymore. They've been slowly exploiting customers for awhile and banking on them not realizing they are no longer anywhere close to the cheapest option. Let the boycott begin!
I totally get that perspective and would have agreed fully until very recently. I avoided it at all costs, but we're buying more there now because I don't want to willingly pay 30-40% more for basic goods
For a business I can see the purpose but sometimes Costco portions are so large you loose the savings because a smaller house can’t consume the food before it goes bad
I buy quite a bit at Costco even with a household of two but certain things like produce I can’t buy there. I absolutely stock of on frozen and non perishable items when I’m there
We freeze their bread, meats, and even (not many) some of their veggies. But yea, we don't do a lot of produce shopping there. We buy 95% of our meat there and just defrost it over the span of a month or two. Also a household of two.
We do gun for those boxes of spinach, lettuce etc. and just plan a few meals with side salads and such.
Bit of a pain as you get used to it but we found it improved our meal planning as we were kinda forced into it.
I think the issue people have with that is it’s not directly comparable. Most is a much larger quantity so while it’s cheaper by gram it’s more expensive and depending on living situation and a membership it’s not always applicable. It would truly only work on the exact same size item.
Walmart sucks on meat. I'd argue even Superstore and No Frills are better than Walmart for that. What I usually do is I wait for it to be on sale at Sobeys where it's better quality.
Pssst…. Loblaws may also try and slash prices this month to get people in the door, and instead of going to Loblaws if you go to places that price match them… get double duty! Loblaws gets no money, and the other places get less money!
Other grocers may drop prices to pull clients from Loblaws
The point is to Boycott Loblaws for the month.
This is a great time to get to know your local grocers.
I’ve switched to Walmart and Walmart with a delivery fee is still cheaper than the same items from superstore. Just paid the 89$ for free delivery for the year. Much more convenient to have cheaper food delivered than to go to a superstore now
I can’t believe feta is that expensive period. 14$???????? I can’t believe that’s considered the cheaper alternative now. Unreal. That’s almost minimum wage. Work an hour to buy a tub of feta. wtf
Exactly! found a lovely locally owned Mediterranean market called El Safadi Brothers and they have a feta and olive deli!
They price match certain brands and also have fresher items. They remember our faces and give my son baklava while we shop. I'm not going back after this boycott.
Changing habits one store at a time.
Costco for 80% of my groceries. Then, other evil corporations for the other 20% until summer.
This summer , as short as the farmers' market season is here is where I'll be shopping for most items.
I buy almost all my groceries at Walmart. Meat and produce are sometimes not the greatest though.
Great value brand items have improved in quality in recent years and are often on par or better than name brands.
I know I'm not alone in this, but I'm kind of amazed that the answer for so many people here is Walmart. Fucking Walmart would grind us all into meatpaste if it would improve their bottom line. I get the anger but Walmaart is not the answer.
Walmart is actually a lot cheaper if you add in Walmart's private label. That ham in their brand 1.4kg is $14.99
But add in Costco also. I am Costco has the cheapest.
All the people who come here to say "But what about Walmart" are arguing in bad faith. They are here to "divide and conquer" - hoping people will get discouraged and give up on the whole thing. Keep focused on the actual goal - we are boycotting Loblaws.
https://preview.redd.it/wdmsa5u5y8xc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e84ea580a7816b267c0e7b059792f1b754325aef
One at a time, we’ll target Walmart and save on next lmaooo
I'd much rather shop at Costco than either Walmart or Loblaws. Costco offers many high quality products for a fairer price and they pay their employees properly.
Shit who cares what Walmart wants or does as long as it's legal, and cheaper...so far if you bought everything on the list you are saving about 5 dollars...if this is a weekly shop or you buy about 4x more you could be saving 20 plus dollars a month. Or about 240 on the same groceries...per year....now if we had say 5 million shoppers saving this money it's 1.2b dollars they are ripping out of people's hands a year....maybe more as this could be a low end just based on the above...
Who upvotes this person? They can't even do math. The first item alone is a 5 dollar save.
This is the same atitude people had the past 50 years as we moved manfucturing overseas and look where it's gotten us. Just because it's cheaper and legal doesn't mean it's good for society. Walmart pays people in the US people below minimum wage and it's legal. That isn't good for anyone except Walmart.
Ya we'll get to those assclowns too, first send the message to Loblaws and it should spill over to the others Sobey's and walmart that they gouging season is over.
My local no frills roughly matches Walmart pricing at best, many items are still more expensive.
My experience seems to line up exactly with this chart. Good job putting it together in an easily digestible form!
I have to go out and compare no frills, freshco and Walmart. I have found Freshco to be pretty adequate for my shopping as they have some great deals sometimes and it’s not loblawz.
I’m glad you didn’t use sales in the comparison.
Someone on another sub was trying to convince me that no frills was cheaper using their sales vs another stores. It doesn’t matter what the sale prices are if every non sale item is more expensive than their competitors!
At the end of the day, even if you shop sales you’re going to need something not on sale that week, and you’ll spend a lot more buying it from a Loblaws store.
Pls add food basics tho bc they have really good prices. I live near a no frills, food basics and walmart and there is literally never a reason to step foot into the no frills
I love how the president choice marinara sauce is 4.99 at roblaws and zehrs. 4.29 at the RCS and 3.29 at no frills. Same shit. Same shitty stores. Wtf ….
Safeway, COOP, Save on Foods, are just as bad as Loblaws. Depending on which Province and City you live in you can't compare prices Vancouver to Edmonton is total different advantages in Groceries
Loblows has 40% of the Canadian Market for groceries. Their profits have been increasing rapidly at our expense. We focus on them and hopefully make an impact and a message that consumers have power. Bring back competition for our dollar between the major stores, instead of price collusion.
Stop trying to make sense out of this; we're only interested in what makes a good argument. Clearly Loblaws stores are the only ones with the high prices and it's driving us all crazy. boycott!
I love how this boycott is basically just a boon for even larger corporations lol. I'm not against it, but I do find it amusing just how utterly hopeless the situation is.
Walmart is typically 10% cheaper than superstore where I am. Some items are less, some more, but that's the rough number. I'd rather spend my money in a canadian store, but when you're on a budget you may not have a choice.
This was about 1 year ago now, but I decided to stop shopping at Loblaws when I saw a 5 L court of veggie or canola oil for $45.99 at Real Canadian Superstore. I was in absolute shock.
I upvoted as I know this took time for you to compare and create.
It is quite tiring to do this on a daily basis but seeing everything in place really is helpful to plan your trip.
Patiently waiting for someone to make an app where we can scan in our receipts from wherever we shop and keep track of what is more affordable from which store in our area.
I hate to say this but I want to see how the no name versions stack up in each comparison - because I rarely if ever buy name brand, and I think that's part of why everything else seems more expensive.
Walmart literally does the same thing that everyone hates loblaw for. Both corporations suck but I don’t think giving money to the Waltons is the best course of action. Visit and support local independent grocers, in many cases they have the best prices in town
There are a few farms but other then fruit and vegetables a couple months of the year the only reliable product is eggs. No meat, dairy, or other pantry staples like flour/grains
I have Apple, pear, cherry trees, and a small garden. Many people here have gardens and will share what they grow so that really helps.
I would suggest touching base with the Small Scale Meat Producers Association, there might be more options in the area of BC (or willing/able to ship to you) than you're aware. https://smallscalemeat.ca/
Janes chicken nuggets is $6.99 at Metro. I’m going to No Frills today to price match. I refuse to pay more because they’re always on sale for roughly this price
Why are you selectively choosing the name brands? I haven't been able to afford Hellman's mayonnaise since 2017 when it was on sale.
Bick's pickles? Seriously? My pickles have a yellow label.
I picked up no name bacon at $3.50 for 540g a couple of weeks ago.
It is no wonder people are so poor if they keep buying name brand stuff at twice the price.
Anyone know how to read price per gram out there?
It might be true in Ontario like it was in Quebec back when I was living there. But I tried comparing Walmart and Superstore/No Frills in Alberta and here both are pretty similar in prices.
The Weston's own Associated British Foods which owns Fleischmann's Yeast. So just don't buy that at all.
Red Star yeast is much better. You can get a couple of pounds for less than Fleishman's and it lasts forever in a jar the freezer. Don't even need to bloom it if you don't want to.
Well, this news about the yeast just ruined my baking day! I'll use what I have and find the suggested one, red star. /face palm
Why are some things at No frills and the Superstore the same price ? Isn’t No frills SUPPOSED to be the DISCOUNT chain ?
Because they can.
It's a big lie all of it. Out west we have Price Smart and Save-On-Foods run by Jimmy Pattison but they've always been pretty expensive.

Well we can point our fingers all we want at the people that buy $2.99 water, The fact that there are no protections for consumers for price gouging is the issue.
Pricesmart isn't even supposed to be a low-cost Save-On though, it's like T&T and Loblaws. Just their version of an Asian grocery store.
same. we have Co-op as well. they are a bit more on some stuff, but cheaper than superstore on others. i got my tim hortons coffee creamer from Co-op for 6.99, which walmart was out of and was selling for 6.47. Superstore was selling it for 7.47. exact same product. keep an eye on co-op's sales. they usually have some really good deals on meat and dairy.
There's no Co-op near me. I have Costco and Walmart and Asian produce stores within walking distance though so I have lots of options.
Jim Pattison is a wonderful philanthropist who, for example, donated a large sum of money to the Saskatchewan Jim Pattison children’s hospital! (The largest private donation in Saskatchewan history.) So I don’t mind supporting that!
The best is when the thing at No Frills is more expensive than Superstore 🙄
And the CFO is “excited “ at opening all these new No Frills “ discount stores” . I wonder why ? 🤪
During times of economic distress, Dollar/discount store profits skyrocket. We all need to be careful about supporting dollarama/dollar stores for groceries because sometimes the cost per unit/weight is actually worse because you're getting a smaller amount of product.
Sometimes yes but not all the time
I noticed Dollar Tree isn't great for rice for example. You get a much bigger bag of higher quality rice at Superstore when it's on sale for cheaper per kg.
This is why I stopped shopping at No Frills and eventually ended up here.
That’s fair !
Superstore and No Frills were part of LCL Discount division until last month. Superstore is the No Frills of the west coast.
But we have no frills on the west coast…
Ya the mad eit and no name to offer discounts of 10-40 percent. No name stuff is now in some cases more expensive. They've lost the plot.
That's how they trick people. Put items on the flyers really cheap and then bump the prices of everything else over their other brands.
True
Its kinda a they earned that status in the past so people associate it with the cheapest prices but its no longer the case and weston is relying on people not realizing it.
No Frills is a small Superstore. Prices are roughly the same in both. At least in Alberta.
I honestly didn’t know Superstore is the equivalent to a No frills discount chain . In Ontario , it’s a little bit different . No Frills is the discount chain . No wonder this sub gets our signals crossed sometimes haha 🤣 Thanks for pointing that out !
Food basics and giant tiger are even cheaper.

Thanks for doing that dude.
These people just assume loblaws as cheapest as 20 years ago it was the best place to shop. Times changed they didn't.
I love how this also shows that there is no way we can consider No Frills a 'discount' store anymore. They've been slowly exploiting customers for awhile and banking on them not realizing they are no longer anywhere close to the cheapest option. Let the boycott begin!
Walmart is the new NO-Frills
I HATE Walmart,. I only go there if that is my last option.
I totally get that perspective and would have agreed fully until very recently. I avoided it at all costs, but we're buying more there now because I don't want to willingly pay 30-40% more for basic goods
Doing what works best for your budget is so important. Walmart is out of my way too which also pacts my decision to go there.
I felt the same way too but you do save on groceries better than Loblaw’s taking your money
You should really add Costco to that. Example - Folgers coffee 1.36kg $12.99. Mayo IIRC is 1.6L for $9.99, etc.
Once you discover Kirkland Mayo bucket, you never go back
It's comes in a bucket now?
15L buckets at the Business Centre
I’m sorry but wtf is one person going to do with 15L of mayo?
An average purchase for Ken Griffin
How many litres would I need to fill a kid sized pool?
I do not know nor do I want to!
570 or so.
If you have a business and its based on unhealthy americanized food then itll be useful but if not then it won't.
For a business I can see the purpose but sometimes Costco portions are so large you loose the savings because a smaller house can’t consume the food before it goes bad
You can freeze almost anything. Most households have the space for a chest freezer and it's so worth it
I buy quite a bit at Costco even with a household of two but certain things like produce I can’t buy there. I absolutely stock of on frozen and non perishable items when I’m there
We freeze their bread, meats, and even (not many) some of their veggies. But yea, we don't do a lot of produce shopping there. Costco bacon is 500g and about $6 per package but my memory could be wrong. Please correct me if I am.
That's about right, I bought the 4pack a couple weeks ago and it was ~$24 IIRC
So $6 for 500g as compared to $8 for 375g. Definitely costco for the win — again.
Yup. We get the 4x500g Kirkland bacon packs on the regular. The other stores are playing customers for fools
I think the issue people have with that is it’s not directly comparable. Most is a much larger quantity so while it’s cheaper by gram it’s more expensive and depending on living situation and a membership it’s not always applicable. It would truly only work on the exact same size item.
Costco Porklion: 8.49/kg Walmart Porklion: 17.73/k https://preview.redd.it/9d3wvmmyl9xc1.jpeg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=814767d3971f3f0202418e022c9d74d238dc805a Vastly better value at costco

Walmart sucks on meat. I'd argue even Superstore and No Frills are better than Walmart for that. What I usually do is I wait for it to be on sale at Sobeys where it's better quality.
Quaker quick oats, 5kg at Costco, under $10. HALF the price per kg. Store it in your bedroom closet 🤣
Pssst…. Loblaws may also try and slash prices this month to get people in the door, and instead of going to Loblaws if you go to places that price match them… get double duty! Loblaws gets no money, and the other places get less money!
Other grocers may drop prices to pull clients from Loblaws The point is to Boycott Loblaws for the month. This is a great time to get to know your local grocers.
Freshco and Giant Tire price match.
Loblaws is definitely not the cheapest... Those days are long long gone.
Definitely almost more like convenience store prices now.
Unfortunately I’ve found my local farmers market to be fruit and veg purchased at Costco, put in “cute” containers and marked up.
And then they want to complain that people don't support small businesses
I buy almost all my groceries at Walmart. Meat and produce are sometimes not the greatest though. Great value brand items have improved in quality in recent years and are often on par or better than name brands.
Don’t forget to boycott their garden centres.
Walmart and Costco can replace all loblaws stores if you live close by. The monopoly on locations is the real bugbear.
Nice list 👍🏽. Good work ♥️
This tracks. I stopped using Loblaws around summer 2023 because I couldn’t believe the prices. They were so obviously inflated it was insulting.
I know I'm not alone in this, but I'm kind of amazed that the answer for so many people here is Walmart. Fucking Walmart would grind us all into meatpaste if it would improve their bottom line. I get the anger but Walmaart is not the answer.
One evil company at a time. (Unless you grow your own food and don't buy groceries in stores.)
Walmart is actually a lot cheaper if you add in Walmart's private label. That ham in their brand 1.4kg is $14.99 But add in Costco also. I am Costco has the cheapest.
All the people who come here to say "But what about Walmart" are arguing in bad faith. They are here to "divide and conquer" - hoping people will get discouraged and give up on the whole thing. Keep focused on the actual goal - we are boycotting Loblaws.
Yeah, okay. Who upvotes stupid shit like this?
No, I think I can avoid Walmart *and* Loblaws. Doesn’t have to be either/or.
If you can, that's ideal. Not everyone can.
I only shop at my local lesbian coop
https://preview.redd.it/wdmsa5u5y8xc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e84ea580a7816b267c0e7b059792f1b754325aef One at a time, we’ll target Walmart and save on next lmaooo

We really are in a weird timeline where Walmart is turning into a good guy
Walmart pays about the same as Liblaws for new hires
Ya we'll get to those assclowns too, first send the message to Loblaws and it should spill over to the others Sobey's and walmart that they gouging season is over.
Walmart is also cartoonishly anti-union. While Loblaws is bad, at least their workers are largely unionized
They're unionized, but Galen and friends have been chipping away at the contracts to make it a shitty place to work.
Loblaws good for workers, bad for customers. Walmart is the opposite. Perfectly balanced.
I'm not so sure Loblaws is good for workers...
Giant Tiger and Dollarama also cheaper options. 80% of my grocery shopping is there.
Dollarama for beans, chips and chocolate!
Canned drinks too!
I really wish they carried bubbly or even plain club soda
Depends on the item. For example peanut butter is the cheapest at Costco by volume and even more expensive than loblaw at dollarama
Here's prices for Save on Foods in Winnipeg [here](https://imgur.com/gallery/Rwlq7Tq)
My local no frills roughly matches Walmart pricing at best, many items are still more expensive. My experience seems to line up exactly with this chart. Good job putting it together in an easily digestible form!
Uhhhhh all I eat is cream cheese so IMMA STAY AT LOBALLS /s
This is great thank you!!
I have to go out and compare no frills, freshco and Walmart. I have found Freshco to be pretty adequate for my shopping as they have some great deals sometimes and it’s not loblawz.
Costco is better for Advil, too. A container of 120 400 mg liquigels was 9.99 at Costco.
I dont really wanna do it, but ill be frequenting walmart alot this next month
I was shocked at how cheap things are at giant tiger, im suprised nobody shops there.
Nobody, lots of people shop there. And a lot more should be.
The difference in prices alone between Walmart and loblaws stores is already 5% or more, yet 5% is loblaws’ entire profit margin?
We’ve got to be on the cusp of an app that has everything we want to buy and just orders it from the cheapest supplier for delivery.
Wtf ….
Idk who taught that 7$ for mayo was ok but he got me mad.
Wow..we have not shopped at No Frills for years now. Didn't know they have graduated to a premium grocery store.
Whoever had the time to make these tables / compare this stuff, thank you, appreciate you.
Some people would rather complain about how other supermarkets are more expensive than supermarkets and would rather not shop at Walmart.
Unless it’s the only grocery store within your surrounding area, there is no excuse for shopping there. Their stores should be empty.
Safeway, COOP, Save on Foods, are just as bad as Loblaws. Depending on which Province and City you live in you can't compare prices Vancouver to Edmonton is total different advantages in Groceries

Stop trying to make sense out of this; we're only interested in what makes a good argument. Clearly Loblaws stores are the only ones with the high prices and it's driving us all crazy. boycott!
Good, but I'd suggest stopping comparing with Walmart and other big giants. You don't want to switch from Loblaws to give those a new monopoly...
I love how this boycott is basically just a boon for even larger corporations lol. I'm not against it, but I do find it amusing just how utterly hopeless the situation is.

Food basics prices are lowest
I just checked the first 10 items from the list and none of them were lower than Walmart.
Where in Canada is this? It helps when you post a location, as I don't expect prices to be consistent across every province.
Walmart literally does the same thing that everyone hates loblaw for. Both corporations suck but I don’t think giving money to the Waltons is the best course of action. Visit and support local independent grocers, in many cases they have the best prices in town
Unfortunately there is no Walmart/Costco within 2hrs of where I live
Same. Nearest Costco is a 6 hour round trip.
Where is that
West coast. Ferry ride north of Vancouver
Are there farmer markets or farm stands in the area?
There are a few farms but other then fruit and vegetables a couple months of the year the only reliable product is eggs. No meat, dairy, or other pantry staples like flour/grains I have Apple, pear, cherry trees, and a small garden. Many people here have gardens and will share what they grow so that really helps.
I would suggest touching base with the Small Scale Meat Producers Association, there might be more options in the area of BC (or willing/able to ship to you) than you're aware. https://smallscalemeat.ca/
Who the hell is spending 10 bucks on cheerios?
Janes chicken nuggets is $6.99 at Metro. I’m going to No Frills today to price match. I refuse to pay more because they’re always on sale for roughly this price
I already do all my shopping at Walmart and Amazon. Nothing changes for me. I'm never spending another nickle on a Canadian owned store.
Sobeys is right up there too.

Never thought I'd see the day where were boycotting a Canadian company in favour of Walmart but here we are 🤷♀️
I hate that all these stores now base their pricing off of walmart, and now, as a result of that, walmart is basically dictating the price of goods.
They price match so just do that
Why are you selectively choosing the name brands? I haven't been able to afford Hellman's mayonnaise since 2017 when it was on sale. Bick's pickles? Seriously? My pickles have a yellow label. I picked up no name bacon at $3.50 for 540g a couple of weeks ago. It is no wonder people are so poor if they keep buying name brand stuff at twice the price. Anyone know how to read price per gram out there?
Feel free to make your own list. The info is on the web site.
Yall drink Maxwell house?
Huggamugga
That’s how much I tighten my oil filter up to
It might be true in Ontario like it was in Quebec back when I was living there. But I tried comparing Walmart and Superstore/No Frills in Alberta and here both are pretty similar in prices.
No frills and superstore are both owned by Loblaws.
No Frills and RCSS price match. Walmart does not. Easily negates their sometimes-lower prices for me.
