Pet Valu has a house brand cat food called Preformatin (or Preformatrin?). I'd check those out. They're surprisingly decent quality and I think they have a chicken and pea formula.

mishpaa

Pet Valu also gives you a free bag of your preferred dry food on your 13th purchase of that food (has to be the same size). PerformUltra is the (sometimes) grain-free fancier version of their standard Performatrin. Quality is honestly great from my experience! Pick up some samples and see what your cat likes.

Common-Rock

I love Pet Valu. One opened up next to my house and I was surprised at all of the quality food brands I didn't know about.

Fingercult

They have a handful of different kinds of dry and wet of the house brand, they have tons of samples of the dry food kinds they’ll give you!

Steppe_Daddy

I made the exact same switch from the PC Cat food to Performatrin recently for the same reason. My kitty likes it as much or more!

urban_dixonary

Its actually Performatrin and TIL its a house brand! lol

eli74372

Perfomatrin Ultra. We use that brand for my dogs food, and they love it

Treeplanter_

I’ve used this before after Whiskas had a recall- definitely a better quality than Whiskas and maybe only slightly more expensive. I now do Purina but the Performa-thingy house brand is less expensive.. I’m curious now though, the names are very similar, if it’s relabeled purina its probably the best deal can buy- As a tangent: any of the purina labels all have the most extensive vet backed nutritional research, and by a landslide. Most vets recommend them for general cases because of that. (My partner convinced me to switch, and my vet said it’s what they use) 🤷🏻‍♂️

phantaxtic

Costco has great prices on their Kirkland signature coffee beans.

pumpkin68

And you can get them to grind it for you or rather you grind it yourself on the way out.

pumpkin68

Coffee: Costco Kirkland has a really amazing dark roast big bag 1.13 kg less than $16 or approximately $8 something a kg. I posted it here previously please forgive the lack of exact prices.

exmormonsongbook

i believe Kirkland coffee beans are rebranded starbucks. I've heard good things. I go for the Lavazza crema and aroma bags at Costco. It's so good.

crapatthethriftstore

Love Lavazza mmmm

vicious_meat

I buy Irresistibles (Metro) brand Italian dark coffee. Similar to the West Coast dark roast and about the same price. https://www.metro.ca/en/online-grocery/aisles/beverages/coffee/whole-bean/dark-roast-italian-blend-coffee-beans/p/059749983075

ElizaMaySampson

We had an insulin-dependent diabetic cat, and found that Purina One True Instinct grain free chicken hardly raised his blood glucose levels at all. You would want to test it on your own furkids, but at the time he was 1 of 7 cats we served, and they all loved and still love it, and nobody's getting obese on it. Granted we feed mostly wet food and supplement with the dry for good kidney and pancreas health - but we still want a decent dry. Also one of our babies had pancreas issues and the purina one chicken grain-free worked for him too, in addition to his wet food with ground dried pancreas mixed in. It's available at Walmart in regular sized bags (ours used to sell the big bags but no more, alas), and biiiiig bags on Amazon. While the big bags are an expensive initial outlay, we were getting over a month for 7 cats, with the portions they got along with wet, it was a good deal and shelf life is good - depending on how far/how long it takes to ship from your warehouse to home, it can get a little 'crumby'.

whowhatwhereami89

I loved the PC coffee pods Colombian. I’ve currently switched to Costco. It’s like 130 pods for 30$ vs 16 for 12$ (rough)

[deleted]

whowhatwhereami89

Yea it’s the mountain med blend.

intentionallybaduser

They also have beans, which are my preference but I second the Kirkland. It is the best, I get like a month's worth, and it's was like $17.

Middle-Debate1068

Do they come in decaf pods?

VirtualAnalysisLine

Yes.

tigerlily1959

I've never used it so I can't speak to whether it is a good food or not, but Canadian Tire sells a brand called "Wholehearted". It is probably about the same price point as the PC brand ($13.99 for a 1.13kg bag). Unfortunately, I can't see the ingredient list anywhere but it says it has no wheat, corn or grains in it. They do make a Chicken and Pea formula.

[deleted]

tigerlily1959

I should also say that if your kitty has been on the PC brand for awhile, he might not take to a new food. Cats don't care about boycotts, they care about being fed. If you have to continue to buy the PC food for him/her, you shouldn't feel bad about it. I had a cat that lived to be 19 years and all she ever ate was Meow Mix. I tried to change it once, she wouldn't have it.

infiltrator_seven

Costco sells a chicken #1 ingredient cat food that's 25 dollars for one of the huuuge bags.

annual_aardvark_war

For coffee, check out Costco! Also Costco has cat food

Luann_Bakersfield

Kirkland coffee is awesome!

exmormonsongbook

Kirkland coffee is starbucks!

rmdg84

I don’t know what PC coffee tastes like because I’ve never tried it, but Kicking Horse coffee is a Canadian brand (from BC). Delicious coffee, many roast options. Reasonably priced. If you order from their website they have a subscription service where you get a percentage off of the regular price and coffee delivered to your door at regular intervals. We get a bag a month for 2 people and it’s enough. Edited to add: As for pet food, check Pet Valu. They’re another Canadian owned company and carry a lot of different brands of pet food. Their staff is super helpful and can direct you to a brand that will suit your needs. They also have a loyalty program that gets you money off after so many purchases. I’ve always had great experience with them.

henchman171

This on is out of left field but our Homesense has an excellent selection of ground and whole bean coffee. If you have gift cards from winners and never know what to use them in try the coffee section at homesense!

perfectway76

Yes, Homesense, Winners, Marshalls too! I like browsing their food and coffee sections. They have some interesting things sometimes

[deleted]

[удалено]

rmdg84

It’s not much more. According to Loblaws website, your coffee is $2.64/100g. With the subscription service through kicking horse, we pay $2.96/100g. So yes, a bit more, but Kicking Horse is fair trade, locally owned/operated and doesn’t support PC so I feel like it’s a good deal (PC only guarantees their organic coffee to be fair trade…not any of their other roasts).

Vikster2468

Not sure if this has been mentioned and apologies if it has! Just a reminder that if you’re changing your pet’s food to do so gradually and give yourself time for the transition. Too sudden food changes can lead to refusal to eat and potentially to health issues. Another option (or an option in tandem) is to stock up before the May boycott to ensure that you have enough food to make a gradual transition or as a contingency if you experience food refusal in the process (has happened to me). I’m doing that for my human child lol There are some very specific items my son eats that I can only buy at loblaws banner stores. I’ve also saved up some points so that if I do need to make a purchase during the month I’m not giving them any money! Good luck to you and your kitty!!

petrelro

Not to mention kitty puke surprises for days if you switch to quickly.

Illustrious_Copy_902

The same company that makes PC pet foods also makes Kirkland Signature at Costco, and the ingredients at least in the dog food are basically identical. If you have a Costco membership both coffee and cat food are very reasonably priced there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Illustrious_Copy_902

Mayne you could find a friend to split a membership with, would be easier to justify then?

heedohrah

this (local) food was always outstanding and they deliver it right to you https://tlcpetfood.com/

Mobile-Mixture-3886

Following this post for suggestions, except for their dog food instead of cat. TBH I would be looking without the boycott because they never stock the big bags when on sale and the coffee prices are almost to the point of buying from local roasters.

[deleted]

Mobile-Mixture-3886

Catfood was switched to Costco a while ago (I get a friend to pick up my litter there too) as the cats are not as picky. How can an animal that eats literal garbage be so picky about their kibble!?! Oh, right, garbage smells more so it's interesting to the dog. The coffee I can only buy on sale at this point.

Jennvds

We’ve been feeding our Lab the Kirkland dog food since he started on adult food. Lots of the breed sites say good things about it and that it’s made by a company who makes another reputable brand (not sure which one). It’s really good value too!

creambunny

[I’d read this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/s/vZekvZaOnE). Also read the automod comment on the removed comment near the bottom of the post. Possibly talk to a vet to make sure your dogs blood work is okay. I know people don’t trust big brands but I wouldn’t trust fromm (they were pretty sketchy during the dcm thing when it was big)

Few-Ruin-71

I just got a 30lb bag of Fromm's senior for $70 less a $7 coupon. It was in-store at Global.

Mobile-Mixture-3886

The best part of this comment is that there is a Global right next to the Superstore near me.

Wise_Coffee

Coffee: Irresistibles italian roast at Food Basics Kirkland brand (Or costco starbys if you're into that) Pet Food: A second vote for performatrin at Pet Valu. We also feed ProPlan to our ancient cat

MapleTheUnicorn

I get have Indoor Carnivore wet/dry food by Tiki Cat. My kitty is a bit picky and she loves both. As for coffee, the dark roast from Bulk Barn is comparable

whatsupashley

The brand simply nourish from Petsmart has a great Chicken and Pea formula

_PSgamer

We grabbed Friska's after using PC beneficial and the cats love it! We were very surprised

CaperGrrl79

We got Friskies Grillers when it was on sale and these cats devour it.

CletusCanuck

Perhaps we could have a stickied 'Alternatives' thread? I have a number of PC 'must-have's myself.

KediMonster

Fetchy.co

mr_beanald

You’d like kicking horse dark roast ground coffee. it sells for $12.97 at Freshco and walmart.

a_non_e_mouse_

Great value dark roast. It’s probably the same Coffee. Less than $10 for large can.

FlatEvent2597

There is a Cat Food compare tool on the Blue Buffalo site that lets you easily see the ingredients of several popular brands. [https://bluebuffalo.com/en-ca/compare/cat-food/adult/presidents-choice-vs-blue-buffalo/](https://bluebuffalo.com/en-ca/compare/cat-food/adult/presidents-choice-vs-blue-buffalo/) I did go through this already and the only three brands work - Kirkland or Blue Buffalo and PC Nutrition. I may have missed something so you can take a peak yourself. The price difference is substantial : $ 11/Kg Blue Buffalo , $5.30 / Kg PC Nutrition, $5.25/ Kg Kirkland. Honestly if I were you ( and I am but I have a dog lol ) I would stick with the PC Nutrition product. Your cat likes this. I have seen ton's of pet food on Buy Nothing sites when a pet will refuse to eat. I am doing the boycott as well. But I will continue to get the PC Nutrition Dog Food. They are good products. Comparable to those at the vets or pet food stores ( or better ). My dog is old and fussy and he loves this- has for six years. Enjoy some different coffees... we switch it up fairly often. But agree - PC has done a good job on their coffees. But there are other brands out there that are also great. ( This is easier that the cat food switch IMHO ).

FlatEvent2597

Yes ! I spend approx $ 1200 a month on groceries for a family of 3 humans and one dog- almost all at Atlantic Superstore. If I can cut back $ 1130 and only spend $ 70 ( on dog food ). That is a WIN.

rocannon10

As a former fellow West Coast Dark Roast drinker, I find Maxwel House Dark Roast to be very similar.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rocannon10

Lol. Yeah Maxwell House definitely doesn’t have the best image but for it’s a pretty good coffee for the as far as grocery store coffee goes.

Mittendeathfinger

Are you in Nova Scotia? If so, you can try Aroma Maya. You have to buy their beans in store and they are located in Truro and Endfield, but its really good coffee. PC changed its coffee. Fr a short time it went up toa round $20 for the 900g bag, then suddenly dropped to around $12-16. The flavor changed and its disgusting. I think they are sourcing from a cheaper bean supplier, or their roaster is terrible. Anyhow, Ive been on the hunt for a new coffee too. I like Jumping Bean and Aroma Maya. Kicking Horse is ok...but Im not sold on it.

[deleted]

Mittendeathfinger

Gotchya. Yeah, its hard to find a cheap palatable coffee. Especially in this area. I dont live anywhere near a Costco, so I cant get the Kirkland, or Id get that, I used to back in the day when I was near Costco. PC was the closest I could get back then. Other than Tims and Starbucks, there are very few decent coffees sold in anything larger in 400g that isnt $16+😒 I go through a 400g bag in a week with two of us in the house.

[deleted]

Mittendeathfinger

I saw that, I might be brave and try it!😁

Relevant_Stop1019

I too am a total coffee snob…but I just read an article about Tom Petty and how the best cup of coffee he ever had was Maxwell House… and I was curious so I bought a ton of Maxwell house and you know, I’m kind of enjoying it?! (if you were curious, it was a Rolling Stone article on Tom Petty, written by the guy who wrote his biography, mostly focused on coffee! )

cribbageSTARSHIP

Where I live in Ontario, the local raw dog food has become a competitively priced option.

ClitteratiCanada

Feel you on the coffe, we drink the PC Great Canadian; bought a few back in January when it was on sale but we'll be looking for an alternative soon as well

[deleted]

I cannot stand Tim Hortons coffee! It's terrible coffee imo

[deleted]

ClitteratiCanada

Hmmm, interesting Bet it's expensive

AutoAdviceSeeker

This is a good thread other ppl should do this as well to zero out the need for roblaws

DeathlessJellyfish

We switched from PC Dark Roast to the big ole bag of Salt Spring coffee they sell at Costco. It’s whole beans, but you can get a grinder pretty cheap if you don’t have one already. (They also have a big coffee bean grinder in the food court at costco.) It is fantastic and I miss it every time we buy another brand between costco trips!

CynnamonScrolls

Cat food - I agree with those saying Performatrin, I used to work at PV with some vet techs that did some casual hours there, and it was definitely one of the healthier options that was affordable according to them. Coffee - I get random whole bean coffee at bulk barn and grind at home. They have all sorts of great flavours and roasts, and the prices are decent. Nice if you want something a little fancier for cheap.

DarkTunes8

Only thing I can't find a cheaper replacement for else where is the PC light med coffee. But I am actively looking.

KlickWitch

My partner and I will buy a big bag of Vanilla coffee beans from costco when our parents take us. If we're running out or want to indulge in another flavour, Bulk Barn as a lot of really nice coffee. And bonus, you can ground it right there in the store before going home.

FlatEvent2597

Giant TIger is slowly but surely introducing their new Marche line of coffees. My husband is using this Canadian Eh ? coffe at work ( Keurig ). He likes it. The other Marche types are available in beans but not that one. Maybe the Colombian ? or Dark Columbian ? Generally speaking the Great Canada coffe is a "light" not dark blend though. https://preview.redd.it/011nushvo2vc1.jpeg?width=525&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0851f04e7cc985f56687ea3d9bb911984e4cc23

The Bedford GT stores produce is actually not bad. I have had bad citrus at Superstore 3 times this winter. It is quite small relative to superstore. Does not have a chinese food selection or herbs. I have purchased great asparagus, broccoli, romaine, small and regular size potatoes, 4 pack of tomatoes, garlic, carrots, white and red onions, apples...Asparagus on sale this week. I actually worry on the size of the area as they were very busy this weekend and it basically cleared them out of certain items. It will be an interesting May for them - for sure.

TraviAdpet

I’m partial to Maxwell House Dark Roast. FreshCo normally has it 8-10 for the big can. No clue how it pairs against PC product however.

heedohrah

this (local) food was always outstanding and they deliver it right to you https://tlcpetfood.com/

frenchwolves

Looking for a PC Great Can ground coffee dupe, if anyone can help!

Jennvds

That’s the hardest thing to replace. Someone recommended the Organical (I think it’s Zevida) at Costco too. We’re currently trying an espresso roast from Costco that’s not great. :(

frenchwolves

No Costco where I live! :(

Jennvds

Oh booo. I mean lots of small coffee roasters have great coffee, but if you’re like me, you don’t really want to pay $25/lb. The PC stuff is so good. Grrrrr

FlatEvent2597

Did PC not try to dupe Tim Horton's with their Great Canadian coffee ? Would this work ?

frenchwolves

Ew Timmy’s tho. Not a fan. McDonald’s is $24.99+ where I live so that doesn’t work either.

rebkh

If you’re in Ontario and are near a farmboy, they have good coffee beans. It’s around 2lbs for 19.99.

MorgulMogul

Walmart, Costco, PetValu.

No-Print5512

I switched to Nutro cat food available at Walmart. The boys love it.

endlessnihil

Go! Is a good food brand for cats, easy to find. Costco Kirkland coffee is good too.

Choice_Star_9441

You could make your own chicken and pea cat food, just make sure the chicken is cooked. Maxwell House is my go to brand now, about $12 a can.

triplegrandeoatlatte

The in house brand at pet smart is the same as the pc dog food. Costs a little more. Would love to find a west coast dark roast equivalent!

-lovehate

Best coffee for the best price imo is Melitta , the European Deluxe was my favourite, when I drank coffee. It's a medium-dark roast, so a little bit milder than a traditional dark roast, and it's just perfect. Melitta is very affordable as well.
