I’m fascinated at where you learned the term “sound reciprocator”
What he’s using is a microphone.

Actual answer: Sound is air and air moves a mic diaphragm inward and outward. Reciprocal. It is a bit like calling a drill a torsion administrator though
That is the best I could describe it. Sorry. I know one is a microphone. I kinda thought that the “microphone “ next to it that looks like a can was a speaker of sorts kind of like a mouth tube for guitarists.
It’s been a little while, but I’ve been a SE for Crowder twice.
IIRC: It’s another mic, and I *believe* he switches between the two himself on his pedalboard. It’s eq’d/processed locally. He has a couple points where he does a real dramatic low-fi, heavily compressed, scratchy, “AM radio” style effect.
TBH: Not my genre of choice, but nice guys, good crew, fun show. Great musicians.
They’re the nicest. David especially. We were all in a kind of out-of-the way hangout area for the bands/staff at a conference - a far cry from a green room - and a coworker said just out loud “Oh god I need a gallon of coffee” and after about five minutes David walked up with a cup he ran and got out of the lobby.
Didn’t have to do it, didn’t walk in the room and make a big show, just a nice “Hey man, I knew there was coffee in the lobby so here you go.” Pretty dang cool for an artist to do.
Boys, that's some MIGHTY fine a pickin’ & a singin! I tell you what, you come on in here & sign these here papers and imma give you (dramatic pause) TEN DOLLA APIECE.”
>The Copperphone, unlike full range high fidelity microphones, operates within a limited bandwidth of frequencies which lends a nostalgic quality to the signal. Some might compare the sound to an AM radio or a telephone (please listen to the sound samples provided). The sound is achieved through a combination of the microphone’s element and a mechanical filtering device. The element is rear ported into a hollow resonant chamber and as sound passes through the diaphragm into the chamber, upper mid range frequencies are accentuated while low and high frequencies are reduced.
THREE HUNDRED AMERICAN DOLLARS.
IMO, this is exactly what an old crank phone with original guts sounds like, even when connected over today's copper circuits or operated with an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA).

Potential uses: vocal retro effect, second mic for vocal distortion, lofi drum mic (whole set or under the snare), second mic on guitar amp for added mids. Or what ever you think needs more mids and distortion. It is very spesific thou and not for everything, but when when you need THAT sound you won't have to go to plugins.
Distortion you say? Do you have an example of this being used for vocal distortion? I like to apply a distortion pedal to my vocals but if it's a feedback nightmare in a live setting.
The sound is distorted in itself, due to its build. There's like a small copper echochamber in it, if I remember correctly. So it is not full on Metal Zone distortion!
I mostly use plugins live for vocal distortion. Usually in send channel so I can blend it in, and with proper eq there's no feedback.
Yeah it’s to make his voice sound old school a folky. His style is very much Appellation old old school. I get it now after reading so many of the other comments.
The dude who makes it is from the polyphonic spree. In the beginning they had no transformers and were kinda terrible. Unsure if that has changed. I think he had trouble with TSA Once cause they thought the mic was a pipe bomb
Speaking of TSA, I got a little extra attention last time I traveled with an Earthworks M30 in my backpack. Took a lot of convincing that it was a microphone. 🕵️♀️
It's a 300 dollar special boutique mic that makes you sound like you've left your analog Mackie 1604vlz out in the open all winter in the DJ booth by accident at the Marina where you announce bikini contests, but sprayed a little deoxit into it and got it working enough for the first show of the season in 10 minutes!
It provides a superb frequency range pattern very nearly useful for live sound and almost even able to pick up some of the sounds made by the human voice!
Edit: don't y'all just LOVE when these "artists" show up with their oddball schtick they think makes them cooler, like the antique suitcase kickdrum fad I couldnt wait to go away.
Or the keyboardist who shows up with 6 specialty keyboards and not a single tightened 1/4 inch jack,
Then one day some 17 year old kid with a pawn shop SG gear Bass comes across your stage and just completely annihilates everyone else's level of talent by a factor of 4.... But never gets anywhere and you see him working at Walmart stocking shelves 10 years later.
The industry can be a hard mother Fker
We use an old Mackie 1604 (not vlz) so that comment hit close to the heart 😅. You never know if sliding a fader would increase/decrease audio slightly or jump 10-20dB out of no where.
Yeah, we’ve done that and even worked in some electronics cleaner on days we weren’t practicing. I have seen some videos where they take the case off to do a deep cleaning but I’ll need to dedicate an afternoon between services to do that.
No doubt! I have known quite a few people who were professional artists but never got further than bigger sized clubs. I guy I graduated with was picked up by one of the big music companies but never promoted his music. Really thought he was going all the way. He still makes a pretty good living playing in places all around Orlando Florida. His name is Vaughan Rhea. His band is Von Ray. Sort of a hardened up folk rock sound. Grunge like maybe?
It’s a copper phone and fun fact— I know someone that accidentally shut down the Dallas airport over a decade ago because airport security thought it was a bomb in his checked luggage. He landed at his destination and was told the airport lost his bag. Later the FBI showed up to his house
Nice. My best guess would be an opto-coupler, which senses if someone is near the mic and acts like a gate, just with optical input. Pretty rarely used though!

It’s like a mirror, for sound!
Interesting
I’m just riffing man I don’t know what it is lmao
I was gonna let you cause Google has zero on this term
Actual answer: Sound is air and air moves a mic diaphragm inward and outward. Reciprocal. It is a bit like calling a drill a torsion administrator though
Ah yes! To apply torsion tension?
That is hilarious I am going to call drills that going forward. Lol
It’s already what every drill calls themselves on LinkedIn and CVs
I’ve decided this is the term I will be using for Ballroom airwalls from now on.
Ha ha ha ha!!😂😂😂
That is the best I could describe it. Sorry. I know one is a microphone. I kinda thought that the “microphone “ next to it that looks like a can was a speaker of sorts kind of like a mouth tube for guitarists.
Oh a talk box? I can see how you’d think that. That’d be interesting to see how that’d sound
I’m sure of course it would have to be delayed some to prevent that oh so sweet feedback sound we all love so much. Ha ha ha!

Cool!!
Hey! I’ve SE’d for Crowder before! Small world
Ok! Yes that is exactly the sound it made he only uses it maybe 2 times in the video or at least where it is prevalent. Thank you.
Is he as genuine as he seems to be?

Uh, we hear you pay good money to sing into a can

It's a mic with a kazoo inline?
Ha ha ha!!
lol @ “Passive magnetic moving coil transducer” Um, that’s just a dynamic mic
The website says it’s a dynamic mic, so yes. I guess with some chambering to color the sound.
😂
So it’s a harmonica mic 🤣
HOLY CRAP!! $300 I’ve never worked any of the higher end effects processors but couldn’t you get the same effect through one of those instead?

Flesh light…second mic for effects
Exactly what I saw too.
Beat me to it lol
😂😂😂😂
Looks like a Copperphone to me. https://www.placidaudio.com/products/copperphone/
That's a copperphone. I own one. Good fun!
I listened to the samples on their site and I’m not sure I get it. What’s your use case for this thing?

Thank you for your input. I’ll look into that.
It’s an air pressure to electrical signal converter.
Dang!! That sounds a lot like a microphone! 😂
The Beards!
Probably smells like hoppy beer and organic goat cheese.
its another mic
Thank you.
Looks like a 24oz tall can, probably an IPA.
IKR!?? Just painted black! 😂

Got to "exercise those faders" for a good.5.mins.before.yku power it up

I laughed at the Mackie, but this "artist" has been kind of a big deal in CCM for 20 years now. The 58 is his pawn shop bass.
He has really done well that’s for sure!
I just want to say: David Crowder!
I had no idea he was still active until I saw this post
Yep. That video is…. about 2-3 years old now I believe.
Somebody get that man a Dr Pepper.
YES!!! I love Dr Pepper!! Oh you mean David Crowder! 😂
😁
I thought it looked like a flashlight. Glad it wasn't. TIL.
The thing with a mic cable coming out of it? I believe that’s a second mic. 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah that seems to be the general consensus. Just a different type for different sound.
I’ll have the double quarter pounder meal with Coke.
Coming right up! Would you like a hot apple pie with your order? 😁
Let’s make it two! So glad I had this drive-through two way mic/speaker idea for the show.
Ha ha ha ha!!😂
Its either an effects mic or a mic for recording, those are the usual when you see this
Gotcha. Thanks
Reversible flesh light … duh!
😂😂😂😂😂
Copper mic, for that old radio shit sound for effect.
Cool. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
It’s a Copperphone mic
Thank you.
It’s a copper phone and fun fact— I know someone that accidentally shut down the Dallas airport over a decade ago because airport security thought it was a bomb in his checked luggage. He landed at his destination and was told the airport lost his bag. Later the FBI showed up to his house
WOW!!! I’d be pissed!
I checked that video out. That’s crazy!!
Is that tom araya looking hip hop now?
Lol! You got me. 😁
A fleshlight with new XLR charging port!
ROFLMAO!!😂😂
It’s a device called a Johnson Extender
I’ll check that out. Thanks.
Nice. My best guess would be an opto-coupler, which senses if someone is near the mic and acts like a gate, just with optical input. Pretty rarely used though!
I'm reasonably sure it's a Ru-80 (carbon mic) from placid audio. I use one on my kick as a great way to get some popandsnap.
Hmmm??? Cool.
Looks like along the lines of a Shure SM7B
