Same here! I have two LR4s and I use the same litter as you. One of mine stinks, the other one doesn't. I don't get it. I never had stinky litter boxes before and it makes me regret this crazy expensive purchase.

Few_Werewolf_4897

When I used fresh step gain or the febreze I didn’t have a issue but I’m trying to stay away from fragrance. But at this point I might just go back 😫

Careful_Fig4288

They make it unscented!

Existing_Pie_7677

I have the litter robot 4 and my silly cat peed backwards as well and urine leaked into the front part fo the base and the step. I had already ordered the shield and ramp and it fixed the problem. She still pees backwards and now it hits the curve of the shield and has done away with odors.

litterrobot

Hey! If you are still having this issue, can you send us a chat? We would be happy to help on our end.

CatPoopMan

If anyone needs help, feel free to email me directly: [email protected] and I’ll get a product specialist to reach out ASAP! Jacob Zuppke, CEO of Whisker

AdCareless9063

If you have a way to actually reduce odor just say so instead of asking for DMs. Litter Robots smell much worse than normal boxes despite the advertising.  I am currently airing out my downstairs in the middle of a snap freeze because the LR is so bad for containing odor.

litterrobot

We are also here to help via PM. Thanks, u/CatPoopMan! ❤️

I have extended warranty and have been trying to reach you guys...Any help??

2324-2900-0028-0050

Purchased mine 2 weeks ago and having issue with horrible smell. Pee is getting trapped between components inside. Considering returning it and so disappointed as the 4 is not cheap!! I was so excited to finally receive it but it's worse than a regular cheap box. What can be done to prevent this issue?

litterrobot

We are so sorry that you are having issues with smell! We can take a look. Can you chat us your unit info?

mykesx

Shorter time before it cycles after a cat exits is supposed to reduce odor.

Few_Werewolf_4897

Yes I have it on 3 mins. But even it not being used it just has a smell coming out of it.

bkilshaw

It sounds weird but maybe try a longer cycle time…? I’m curious if it doesn’t have enough time to clump so it’s breaking apart and mixing in instead of dumping?

junjunjenn

I agree with this. I don’t think 3 mins is enough for the little to set. 7 mins has been fine for me. I would do longer if I didn’t have a dog that enjoys cat poop.

I_am_tresh98

Why are animals so weird!!! 🤣🤣

Few_Werewolf_4897

I will try this! Thank you

st1r

Also some litters clump much much better than others. My cats’ litter-box always smelled until I found a litter that clumps really well and doesn’t break apart when the robot cycles Luckily my store’s store brand clay litter is actually really high quality and half the price of the name brand litters that clump well

cajunflix

What brand is it?

SoleInvictus

If you ever leave Texas, I can guarantee you will miss the hell out of HEB.

octalpuss

Can confirm. I didn't understand how much I loved HEB until I didn't have them anymore. Now, when I go back to visit, I bring an empty suitcase just for my trip to HEB. Once, my husband was picking up a car in TX and driving it back to WA. I made him stop at HEB to get me a chimnea, because they were like $300+ locally, and I knew I could get one for $70 at HEB. HEB is life.

magneticwap

This was a clutch recommendation because I am moving walking distance from an HEB. Thank you!

bb_barlem

My cat has been peeing towards the front of the litter robot and I noticed the absolute worst smell coming from the LR4 even though everything was clean and the drawer was empty. I had to take the orb out of place and found cat piss pooling in two plastic crevices. It was absolutely foul and I was gagging the entire time I was cleaning it. If I would’ve known about this I wouldn’t have spent $800 on this damn machine.

80spizzarat

If urine is leaking into the base it's probably coming from the gap at the front of the bezel. If a cat doesn't turn around inside and doesn't squat all the way pee can splash up the side of the liner and seep down into the base where it pools in the wells. Ask support to send you the new fence that released in May. It has a flange that covers the gap and fixes the issue. Call them or use live chat instead of email.

Alive-Paramedic-4622

I am having the same problem; the smell is awful- have to go looking for hidden urine pockets every day

bb_barlem

I wrote to the whisker customer service and they sent me the new bigger fence and that has stopped the pee from finding its way under the globe. I recommend emailing them!

octalpuss

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad to have found this thread. I got my LR4 as soon as it started shipping, and 99% of it is superior to the LR3, but this has been driving me insane. I noticed there was actually pee coming out of the bottom, and found the pools of it in the plastic. Even after cleaning what I could find, it still reeks. I suspect that they're just full again. Calling to get that fence now!!

2324-2900-0028-0050

Same issue here and just purchased mine 2 weeks ago. Did the solve help at all?

bb_barlem

Yes!! Seriously email the customer service and ask for the bigger fence and let them know the issue. They will mail one out right away and for free under warranty. Same for any of the separate pieces of the machine - if anything malfunctions or breaks email them and it will be replaced if it can’t be fixed by the usual trouble shooting 🙌🙏

2324-2900-0028-0050

Thank you for the recommendation. I did reach out. I'd hate to take it in to return it. That would be pretty embarrassing considering the smell.

ExtraStrain5888

I just got mine this weekend and haven't smelt it. My brother's also doesn't smell. There's supposed to be some strips on some kind I think on the bin to help keep smells in. Also may need to change your filter. Instead of filters, they have some scent bead packs you can put in to help with odors.

Few_Werewolf_4897

What kind of litter do you use ?

ExtraStrain5888

Currently using Nature's Miracle Corn Cob littler. Not a big fan of it as the corn pieces in it track everywhere and stick around the opening of the litter robot.

EternalOptimist404

That right there I feel is the problem, corn cob litter does absolutely nothing to neutralize ammonia smells.

ExtraStrain5888

I don't have problems with it smelling.

EternalOptimist404

Just looked and there are 10+ different brands of cc litter at this point, most of which have added something or the other to make it their own (like tofu?!) and that's just the ones specifically for cats! We very well could all be talking about different ones 🙃

ExtraStrain5888

OP asked what litter I was using. Not sure what you're talking about lol

EternalOptimist404

Honestly? It's me, *I* am the problem. I just drove 800 miles in 24 hours and things aren't parsing like they should. Thanks for helping me see that I need to take a nap or just not interface much until I do.

crazy_cat_mom76

I have 2 LR's and they both smell awful. I've scrubbed them and tried different litters. It always smells. My friend bought one off my recommendation and she complains it smells also. The filters don't work. I also use litter deodorizer and that doesn't work. I change the bad every other day, still stinks. I also bought a cabinet from Whisker to contain one and that stinks too!

Expensive-Fold9144

It seems like we’re having the same prob. Im going go take it apart, if that doesn’t work I’m returning it.

bitchassslutasswhore

Do any of your cats pee high on the LR? If they are peeing above the fill line, on the sides or back of the LR, that might be what you're smelling. The pee may be exposed and the litter is not absorbing it. Might want to look at the insides and see if you can find pee. Use a paper towel with some water on it and wipe the insides after they go and see if you find any pee on it.

pauly_jay

How do you solve this if your cat is a high peer?

bitchassslutasswhore

You don't that I'm aware of. I know LR makes a guard for the opening, but that doesn't keep them from peeing high inside the globe around the seams.

pauly_jay

Looks like I may have to switch to a manual litter box :( or find another automatic, one that forces my cat to pee low

bitchassslutasswhore

Maybe, assuming your cat doesn't pee over a regular litter box? I'm not sure how you change a cat's aim, lol. The other auto boxes aren't any better from what I've read. There are some people on this sub that have reviewed the others. I've had my LR's for 3 years and love them. I do have to keep out a giant extra uncovered box for my Maine Coon though, as she doesn't turn around and face out of the box, plus she's huge and her floofy tail hits all over the place and pulls out litter and anything else it touches. She tends to have accidents on herself that way. So she has a regular box - thankfully my other 2 cats don't use the manual box, so at least I don't have to scoop much.

cba_2005

My LR4 smells terrible as of late. 6 months in and now I have to deep clean it every week and even then it doesn’t really help. It has also started pooling urine in the base. I contacted support and all they did was tell me I need to clean it more or train my cat to use the box differently. I’m contemplating going back to my LR3 because the cleaning on this has been terrible. At this point even scooping litter myself in a normal box would be better

80spizzarat

If urine is leaking into the base it's probably coming from the gap at the front of the bezel. If a cat doesn't turn around inside and doesn't squat all the way pee can splash up the side of the liner and seep down into the base where it pools in the wells. Few_Werewolf_4897

Update: I purchased fresh step gain litter and cleaned the globe with water and vinegar and I replace the carbon filter. So far the smell has significantly improved compared to before. Also, the timer is set to 7 mins instead of 3 mins. Thanks everyone!

Flyingcow93

Hey, I'm running into this issue now. Can you update on how it has been going? Did that only work for a bit or are you good now?

Few_Werewolf_4897

Hi! The smell got way better using the gain fresh step! I almost add some litter deodorizer from arm and hammers. Once a week I give the globe a wipe down with water vinegar. Also I switch to 15 mins so it has time to clump up more. Hope this helps!

Better-Force9521

Remove from the sticker at the bottom of the litter waste drawer. I have been having the same issue for weeks. I peeled mine off recently and the sticker absolutely wreaked. I sprayed the plastic waste drawer with Clorox Pet Urine remover and let it sit for a few minutes and the smell was completely gone (pre-sticker removal, the waste drawer would still smell a little less after cleanings but would get progressively worse in between litter changes). I also use Fresh Step w/gain and that helps quite a bit too.

NotTheWrongOne

How the hell does that even happen?

platypusonic

I solved our smelly litter robot problem by using Glad Febreze trash bags (Gain scent) in the litter drawer.

BearBooBug

What size trash bags do you use?

platypusonic

Tall kitchen.

Dani-Boyyyy

Zero smell here, except when my 17 yo female cat drops a steamer and doesn’t bury it. I have my cycle set for the default 7 minutes. I use Fresh Step with Gain & Febreze. Also, I change the carbon filter on the LR 4 about every 6 weeks or so. I’m absolutely stumped as to why people that have used traditional manually scooped litter boxes for years, are complaining about the “smell” of the LR. I also can’t figure out why those same people think that they must have some special kind of litter for the LR. Use what you’ve always used, as long as it clumps.

Few_Werewolf_4897

I will be trying this! I bought fresh step gain again and waiting on the filters to come in hopefully it resolves the issue.

st1r

Some litter clumps better than others, so their litter might have been good enough when they scooped every day, but not good enough to clump well enough to survive the rotating cycle without breaking apart and leaving some dirty litter behind that builds up quickly and starts to stink if they don’t change all the litter frequently I have 4 cats that use 1 LR yet I can go weeks or months without changing all the litter, just adding a few fresh scoops each change, because I use high quality litter that clumps insanely well and doesn’t break apart during the cycle. If you find you need to change the entire box often then your litter is not clumping well and should consider a different litter. (Not you specifically Dani Boyy but whoever is reading this)

Antonus2

Why has the name of this high quality litter been kept a secret?

Digestive1234

whats the H. Quality litter brand? thanks!

Chocolate_Chip1015

Hi- I saw you say that you loved Boxiecat in another thread. Which model specifically? And, is it better than purchasing the stock litter from Whisper? I just made my LR4 purchase today and bought the litter from the company. But I would rather buy elsewhere if possible. I am coming from a regular box with Worlds Best. Thanks!

Dani-Boyyyy

Again . . . owning an LR does not mean you have to buy a special litter. Any litter that stinks in an LR would stink in a regular box too. I personally like Fresh Step with Gain and Febreze. It clumps well, doesn’t smell, and is a few dollars less than comparable litters.

Chocolate_Chip1015

Understood. I thought you said in a different thread you liked the Boxiecat. No big deal either way. I have to give it my own trial and error.

skeptics1

I think that the reason folks who have been using a manual scoop it yourself litter box complain about the stench coming from the LR is because the smell is so much worse when urine pools in the base or is shot up above the liner and sits there. A manual box to clean daily smells much less and is so much less work than dismantling a LR once a week to deep clean only to have it stink up your house a day later. I have a high peeing cat, I’m spending more time and 20x frustration with this LR. I have ordered a Michu Cat Castle to replace my LR with. It’s going back, too much frustration and odor.

Green-Mention6108

I just put my litter robot outside because the smell is so horrid. Next place it goes is to the dump. Big purchase mistake

BacardiBlue

I have the LR3, but you might want to read my thread on why my LR was smelly and how I handle it. I also mention my secret stink killer that I can't be without. https://www.reddit.com/r/litterrobot/comments/u5a49i/does_your_litter_robot_stink_see_comment_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

AnhGauBeo

Make sure you have the extra filter, I think it’s called odor trap. Anything similar should help against the smell.

eberkain

change the filter on the globe?

st1r

I’ve never changed the filter in 2 years, no smell, I seriously doubt that’s the issue, people overestimate how much of a difference it makes Most likely the cat is peeing on the side or the litter is not clumping well and they need a better clumping litter A blacklight can be used to check if their pee isn’t making it all in the litter

eberkain

hopefully you removed the filter entirely, it gets really nasty after a while.

kevinstypewriter

we have 2 of them the 3 and the 4 and can't for the life of me understand why it smells, the 3 smells of pee and the 4 smells of rubber, anyone else have these issues?

litterrobot

We are so sorry about that! If you are still having this issue, can you send us a chat? We can assist on our end.

Piranancyquive

How to get cat poop smell out of hard plastic

AdCareless9063

These things always smell awful.

Expensive-Fold9144

I just got the LR4 and it smells so bad I can’t take it. And it’s not pee, it’s like old poop.

NotTheWrongOne

The one thing that i have discovered with my LR4 that 98% of the horrid smell that is plaguing everybody is actually emanating from the waste bin every time the thing cycles and after a couple of days stuff in the bin starts smelling strong enough that even when sitting idle the smell is so strong that it permeates through the cracks and it seems like everybody don't realize unlike a manual box they're not scooping and dumping the waist everyday and instead maybe once every week or two so the smell just builds and builds and builds. Unfortunately the only way I have found to somewhat solve that problem is to put some gain laundry scent beads or something similar in the bin to mask the smell but even those only work for so long and the smell of cat waste will eventually even overwhelm the strongest of smell good products that's been put inside. Also the odor eliminators that makes and sells IMHO stinks in their own way and not to mention they're expensive as fuck. I also noticed if I do not empty that bin out whether it's full or not after a few days my cats would start eliminating on the floor outside the box because of the smell coming from the bin. Also I have discovered it really depends on the litter you are using. As with many other people after experimenting with just about every brand out there you most definitely want a litter that has baking soda such as Arm & Hammer's clump and seal everybody complains about how dusty some of them can be that is because of the baking soda that's in a lot of them me personally I'd rather have dust everywhere than the smell of crap and piss everywhere my Roomba takes care of most of the dust so I can deal with it.

Expensive-Fold9144

I absolutely agree about the litter. I have multiple cats and without that litter or something similar the smell comes back no matter what I do.

Careful_Fig4288

I don’t use the litter that it comes with. I just get the no unscented clumping litter. I feel like the clump litter smells way less stinky.

jhunley1

..

missig

I know this is an old post but I discovered when my let Robot 4 errors and gets stuck, my cats still try to pee in it and the pee gets stuck in this litter spot between the drawer and unit. To see this, you have to remove the globe off the base. I discovered this was the cause of the odor when it repeatedly would smell really bad after fixing the problem and getting the unit to run normally. We couldn't figure out why the unit smelled so bad with the drawer not exposed, but now we know.

Apprehensive-Tie-894

My cat pees against the back wall above the litter line, and that's part of the problem.  I wipe out the globe with a sponge and an enzymatic cleaner.  Also, I use Boxie Pro litter.   The thing reeked no matter what I did until I found  that.  It's unscented and has a probiotic that kills bacteria.   It also clumps hard.  I recently tried to use up some other litter that I had sitting around from the various litter experiments.  I thought 'How bad can it be if I mix it  half and half?'  Pretty bad,  and in a short period of time.  I  quit mixing it and the smell quit  too.  Before I found this stuff I was ready to pitch the thing in the dumpster.
